Abstract:
In this paper we study both experimentally and numerically the intermittent behavior taking place near the boundary of the synchronous time scales of chaotic oscillators being in the regime of time scale synchronization. We have shown that the observed type of the intermittent behavior should be classified as the ring intermittency.

The influence of noise on the generalized synchronization regime in the chaotic systems with dissipative coupling is considered. If attractors of the drive and response systems have an infinitely large basin of attraction, generalized synchronization is shown to possess a great stability with respect to noise. The reasons of the revealed particularity are explained by means of the modified system approach [A.E. Hramov, A.A. Koronovskii, Phys. Rev. E. 71, 067201 (2005)] and confirmed by the results of numerical calculations and experimental studies. The main results are illustrated using the examples of unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators and discrete maps as well as spatially extended dynamical systems. Different types of the model noise are analyzed. Possible applications of the revealed particularity are briefly discussed.

In this paper we report for the first time on the necessity of the refinement of the concept of generalized chaotic synchronization. We show that the state vectors of the interacting chaotic systems being in the generalized synchronization regime are related with each other by the functional, but not the functional relation as it was assumed until now. We propose the phase tube approach explaining the essence of generalized synchronization and allowing the detection and the study of this regime in many relevant physical circumstances. The finding discussed in this Report gives a strong potential for new applications.

In the present Letter we show that the concept of the generalized synchronization regime in discrete maps needs refining in the same way as it has been done for the flow systems [PRE, 84 (2011) 037201]. We have shown that\alkor{, in the general case, when the relationship between state vectors of the interacting chaotic maps are considered,} the prehistory must be taken into account. We extend the phase tube approach to the systems with a discrete time coupled both unidirectionally and mutually and analyze the essence of the generalized synchronization by means of this technique. Obtained results show that the division of the generalized synchronization into the weak and the strong ones also must be reconsidered. Unidirectionally coupled logistic maps and Hénon maps coupled mutually are used as sample systems.

The spectrum of Lyapunov exponents is powerful tool for the analysis of the complex system dynamics. In the general framework of nonlinear dynamical systems a number of the numerical technics have been developed to obtain the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for the complex temporal behavior of the systems with a few degree of freedom. Unfortunately, these methods can not apply directly to analysis of complex spatio-temporal dynamics in plasma devices which are characterized by the infinite phase space, since they are the spatially extended active media. In the present paper we propose the method for the calculation of the spectrum of the spatial Lyapunov exponents (SLEs) for the spatially extended beam-plasma systems. The calculation technique is applied to the analysis of chaotic spatio-temporal oscillations in three different beam-plasma model: (1) simple plasma Pierce diode, (2) coupled Pierce diodes, and (3) electron-wave system with backward electromagnetic wave. We find an excellent agreement between the system dynamics and the behavior of the spectrum of the spatial Lyapunov exponents. Along with the proposed method, the possible problems of SLEs calculation are also discussed. It is shown that for the wide class of the spatially extended systems the set of quantities included in the system state for SLEs calculation can be reduced using the appropriate feature of the plasma systems.

We show that resonant electron transport in semiconductor superlattices with an applied electric and tilted magnetic field can, surprisingly, become more pronounced as the lattice and conduction electron temperature increases from 4.2 K to room temperature and beyond. It has previously been demonstrated that at certain critical field parameters, the semiclassical trajectories of electrons in the lowest miniband of the superlattice change abruptly from fully localised to completely unbounded. The unbounded electron orbits propagate through intricate web patterns, known as stochastic webs, in phase space, which act as conduction channels for the electrons and produce a series of resonant peaks in the electron drift velocity versus electric field curves. Here, we show that increasing the lattice temperature strengthens these resonant peaks due to a subtle interplay between thermal population of the conduction channels and transport along them. This enhances both the electron drift velocity and the influence of the stochastic webs on the current-voltage characteristics, which we calculate by making self-consistent solutions of the coupled electron transport and Poisson equations throughout the superlattice. These solutions reveal that increasing the temperature also transforms the collective electron dynamics by changing both the threshold voltage required for the onset of self-sustained current oscillations, produced by propagating charge domains, and the oscillation frequency.

Two types of phase synchronization (accordingly, two scenarios of breaking phase synchronization) between coupled stochastic oscillators are shown to exist depending on the discrepancy between the control parameters of interacting oscillators, as in the case of classical synchronization of periodic oscillators. If interacting stochastic oscillators are weakly detuned, the phase coherency of the attractors persists when phase synchronization breaks. Conversely, if the control parameters differ considerably, the chaotic attractor becomes phase-incoherent under the conditions of phase synchronization break.

A universal mechanism underlying generalized synchronization conditions in unidirectionally coupled stochastic oscillators is considered. The consideration is carried out in the framework of a modified system with additional dissipation. The approach developed is illustrated with model examples. The conclusion is reached that two types of the behavior of nonlinear dynamic systems known as generalized synchronization and noise-induced synchronization, which are viewed as different phenomena, actually represent a unique type of the synchronous behavior of stochastic oscillators and are caused by the same mechanism.
