The field of spintronics has seen a surge of interest in altermagnetism due to novel predictions and many possible applications. MnTe is a leading altermagnetic candidate that is of significant interest across spintronics due to its layered antiferromagnetic structure, high Neel temperature (TN ~ 310 K) and semiconducting properties. We present results on molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown MnTe/InP(111) films. Here, it is found that the electronic and magnetic properties are driven by the natural stoichiometry of MnTe. Electronic transport and in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy show the films are natively metallic with the Fermi level in the valence band and the band structure is in good agreement with first principles calculations for altermagnetic spin-splitting. Neutron diffraction confirms that the film is antiferromagnetic with planar anisotropy and polarized neutron reflectometry indicates weak ferromagnetism, which is linked to a slight Mn-richness that is intrinsic to the MBE grown samples. When combined with the anomalous Hall effect, this work shows that the electronic response is strongly affected by the ferromagnetic moment. Altogether, this highlights potential mechanisms for controlling altermagnetic ordering for diverse spintronic applications.

Abstract:
This paper presents experimental and modelling results of an ultra-compact self-rectifier flux pump energizing a superconducting coil. The device fits inside a volume of 65x65x50~mm and generates up to 320~A dc through the coil and a peak output voltage up to 60~mV. This paper presents experimental and modelling results of an ultra-compact self-rectifier flux pump energizing a superconducting coil. The device fits inside a volume of 65x65x50~mm and generates up to 320~A dc through the coil and a peak output voltage up to 60~mV. We also develop and present a full electromagnetic effective circuit model of the flux pump and compare its predictions to the experimental results. We show that our model can reproduce accurately the charging of the load coil and that it reproduces the systematic dependence of the maximum load coil current on the input current waveform. The experiments and modelling together show also the importance of dc-flux offsets in the transformer core on the final achievable current through the coil. The miniaturization possible for this class of flux pump and their minimal heat-leak into the cryogenic environment from thermal conduction make them attractive for applications with demanding size, weight and power limitations. Our effective circuit model is a useful tool in the understanding, design and optimization of such flux pumps which will accelerate their progression from research devices to their application.

While the thermoelectric materials progress based on the engineering of electronic and phononic characteristics is reaching a plateau, adding the spin degree of freedom has the potential to open a new landscape for alternative thermoelectric materials. Here we present the concepts, current understanding, and guidelines for designing spin-driven thermoelectrics. We show that the interplay between the spin and heat currents in entropy transport via charge carriers can offer a strategic path to enhance the electronic thermopower. The classical antiferromagnetic semiconductor manganese telluride (MnTe) is chosen as the case study due to its significant spin-mediated thermoelectric properties. We show that although the spin-disorder scattering reduces the carrier mobility in magnetic materials, spin entropy, magnon, and paramagnon carrier drags can dominate over and significantly enhance the thermoelectric power factor and hence zT. Finally, several guidelines are drawn based on the current understandings for designing high-performance spin-driven thermoelectric materials.

We study the effect of proton irradiation on Ba(Fe$_{0.96}$Co$_{0.04}$)$_2$As$_2$ superconducting single crystals from combined magnetisation and magnetoresistivity measurements. The study allows the extraction of the values of the apparent pinning energy $U_0$ of the samples prior to and after irradiation, as well as comparison of the values of $U_0$ obtained from the flux-flow reversible region with those from the flux-creep irreversible region. Irradiation reduces $T_c$ modestly, but significantly reduces $U_0$ in both regimes: the critical current density $J_c$ is modified, most strikingly by the disappearance of the second magnetisation peak after irradiation. Analysis of the functional form of the pinning force and of the temperature dependence of $J_c$ for zero field, indicates that proton irradiation in this case has not changed the pinning regime, but has introduced a high density of shallow point-like defects. By consideration of a model that takes into account the effect of disorder on the irreversibility line, the data suggests that irradiation produced a considerable reduction in the average effective disorder overall, consistent with the changes observed in $U_0$ and $J_c$.

Abstract:
We give a recursive algorithm for computing the Orlik-Terao algebra of the Coxeter arrangement of type A_{n-1} as a graded representation of S_n, and we give a conjectural description of this representation in terms of the cohomology of the configuration space of n points in SU(2) modulo translation. We also give a version of this conjecture for more general graphical arrangements.

The cohomology of the configuration space of n points in R^3 admits a symmetric group action and has been shown to be isomorphic to the regular representation. One way to prove this is by defining an S^1-action whose fixed point set is the complement of the braid arrangement and using equivariant cohomology to show that the cohomology of the configuration space is the associated graded algebra of the cohomology of the arrangement complement. In this paper, we will extend this result to the setting of affine subspace arrangements coming from real hyperplane arrangements using similar methods. We also provide a presentation of the equivariant cohomology ring and extend some results to the setting of oriented matroids.
