Abstract:
Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 0.06, 0.14, and 0.24) shows that the width of the Fe 3d yz/zx hole band depends on the do** level. In contrast, the Fe 3d x^2-y^2 and 3z^2-r^2 bands are rigid and shifted by the Co do**. The Fe 3d yz/zx hole band is flattened at the optimal do** level x = 0.06, indicating that the band renormalization of the Fe 3d yz/zx band…

The Fe 3d yz/zx hole band is flattened at the optimal do** level x = 0.06, indicating that the band renormalization of the Fe 3d yz/zx band correlates with the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature. The orbital-dependent and do**-dependent band renormalization indicates that the fluctuations responsible for the superconductivity is deeply related to the Fe 3d orbital degeneracy.

The spin dynamics in single crystal, electron-doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 has been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering over the full range from undoped to the overdoped regime. We observe damped magnetic fluctuations in the normal state of the optimally doped compound (x=0.06) that share a remarkable similarity with those in the paramagnetic state of the parent compound (x=0). In the overdoped superconducting compound (x=0.14), magnetic excitations show a gap-like behavior, possibly related to a topological change in the hole Fermi surface (Lifshitz transition), while the imaginary part of the spin susceptibility prominently resembles that of the overdoped cuprates. For the heavily overdoped, non-superconducting compound (x=0.24) the magnetic scattering disappears, which could be attributed to the absence of a hole Fermi-surface pocket observed by photoemission.

Neutron scattering measurements were performed to investigate magnetic excitations in a single-crystal sample of the ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2, a parent compound of a recently discovered family of Fe-based superconductors. In the ordered state, we observe low energy spin-wave excitations with a gap energy of 9.8(4) meV. The in-plane spin-wave velocity v_ab and out-of-plane spin-wave velocity v_c measured at 12 meV are 280(150) and 57(7) meV A, respectively. At high energy, we observe anisotropic scattering centered at the antiferromagnetic wave vectors. This scattering indicates two-dimensional spin dynamics, which possibly exist inside the Stoner continuum. At T_N=136(1) K, the gap closes, and quasi-elastic scattering is observed above T_N, indicative of short-range spin fluctuations. In the paramagnetic state, the scattering intensity along the L direction becomes "rodlike," characteristic of uncorrelated out-of-plane spins, attesting to the two-dimensionality of the system.

Abstract:
Ternary Ba-Fe-As system has been studied to determine a primary solidification field of the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ phase. Knowing the primary solidification field, we have performed the vertical Bridgman growth using the starting liquid composition of Ba$_{15}$Fe$_{42.5}$As$_{42.5}$. Large single crystals of the typical size 10x4x2 mm$^3$ were obtained and their quality was confirmed by X-ray Laue and neutron diffraction.

Spin correlations and fluctuations in the 3d-transition-metal-based icosahedral quasicrystal Zn-Fe-Sc have been investigated by neutron scattering using polycrystalline samples. Magnetic diffuse scattering has been observed in the elastic experiment at low temperatures, indicating development of static short-range-spin correlations. In addition, the inelastic scattering experiment detects a $Q$-independent quasielastic signal ascribed to single-site relaxational spin fluctuations. Above the macroscopic freezing temperature $T_{\rm f} \simeq 7$ K, the spin relaxation rate shows Arrhenius-type behavior, indicating thermally activated relaxation process. In contrast, the relaxation rate remains finite even at the lowest temperature, suggesting a certain quantum origin for the spin fluctuations below $T_{\rm f}$.

Neutron scattering experiments have been performed on the ternary rare-earth diborocarbide Ce$^{11}$B$_2$C$_2$. The powder diffraction experiment confirms formation of a long-range magnetic order at $T_{\rm N} = 7.3$ K, where a sinusoidally modulated structure is realized with the modulation vector ${\bm q} = [0.167(3), 0.167(3), 0.114(3)]$. Inelastic excitation spectra in the paramagnetic phase comprise significantly broad quasielastic and inelastic peaks centered at $\hbar ω\approx 0, 8$ and 65 meV. Crystalline-electric-field (CEF) analysis satisfactorily reproduces the observed spectra, confirming their CEF origin. The broadness of the quasielastic peak indicates strong spin fluctuations due to coupling between localized $4f$ spins and conduction electrons in the paramagnetic phase. A prominent feature is suppression of the quasielastic fluctuations, and concomitant growth of a sharp inelastic peak in a low energy region below $T_{\rm N}$. This suggests dissociation of the conduction and localized $4f$ electrons on ordering, and contrasts the presently observed incommensurate phase with spin-density-wave order frequently seen in heavy fermion compounds, such as Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$.
