Scarf complexes of graphs and their powers
Abstract: Every multigraded free resolution of a monomial ideal I contains the Scarf multidegrees of I. We say I has a Scarf resolution if the Scarf multidegrees are sufficient to describe a minimal free resolution of I. The main question of this paper is which graphs G have edge ideal I(G) with a Scarf resolution? We show that I(G) has a Scarf resolution if and only if G is a gap-free forest. We also class… ▽ More

Hilbert Coefficients and Sally Modules: A Survey of Vasconcelos' Contributions
Abstract: This paper surveys and summarizes Wolmer Vasconcelos' results surrounding multiplicities, Hilbert coefficients, and their extensions. We particularly focus on Vasconcelos' results regarding multiplicities and Chern coefficients, and other invariants which they bound. The Sally module is an important instrument introduced by Vasconcelos for this study, which naturally relates Hilbert coefficients t… ▽ More

Simplicial Resolutions of Powers of Square-free Monomial Ideals
Abstract: The Taylor resolution is almost never minimal for powers of monomial ideals, even in the square-free case. In this paper we introduce a smaller resolution for each power of any square-free monomial ideal, which depends only on the number of generators of the ideal. More precisely, for every pair of fixed integers $r$ and $q$, we construct a simplicial complex that supports a free resolution of the… ▽ More

Regular Sequences On Squares Of Monomial Ideals
Abstract: We use initially regular sequences that consist of linear sums to explore the depth of $R/I^2$, when $I$ is a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring $R$. We give conditions under which these linear sums form regular or initially regular sequences on $R/I^2$. We then obtain a criterion for when $\depth R/I^2>1$ and a lower bound on $\depth R/I^2$.

Powers of graphs & applications to resolutions of powers of monomial ideals
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the question of whether geometric structures such as cell complexes can be used to simultaneously describe the minimal free resolutions of all powers of a monomial ideal. We provide a full answer in the case of square-free monomial ideals of projective dimension one, by introducing a combinatorial construction of a family of (cubical) cell complexes whose 1-skeletons a… ▽ More

Morse resolutions of powers of square-free monomial ideals of projective dimension one
Abstract: Let $I$ be a square-free monomial ideal $I$ of projective dimension one. Starting with the Taylor complex on the generators of $I^r$, we use Discrete Morse theory to describe a CW complex that supports a minimal free resolution of $I^r$. To do so, we concretely describe the acyclic matching on the faces of the Taylor complex.

Simplicial resolutions for the second power of square-free monomial ideals
Abstract: Given a square-free monomial ideal $I$, we define a simplicial complex labeled by the generators of $I^2$ which supports a free resolution of $I^2$. As a consequence, we obtain (sharp) upper bounds on the Betti numbers of the second power of any square-free monomial ideal.

Depth of powers of squarefree monomial ideals
Abstract: We derive two general bounds for the depths of powers of squarefree monomial ideals corresponding to hyperforests. These bounds generalize known bounds for the depths of squarefree monomial ideals, which were given in terms of the edgewise domination number of the corresponding hypergraphs and the lengths of initially regular sequences with respect to the ideals.

Initially regular sequences and depths of ideals
Abstract: For an arbitrary ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $R$ we define the notion of initially regular sequences on $R/I$. These sequences share properties with regular sequences. In particular, the length of an initially regular sequence provides a lower bound for the depth of $R/I$. Using combinatorial information from the initial ideal of $I$ we construct sequences of linear polynomials that form initia… ▽ More

Edge ideals of oriented graphs
Abstract: Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a weighted oriented graph and let $I(\mathcal{D})$ be its edge ideal. Under a natural condition that the underlying (undirected) graph of $\mathcal{D}$ contains a perfect matching consisting of leaves, we provide several equivalent conditions for the Cohen-Macaulayness of $I(\mathcal{D})$. A Lower Bound For Depths of Powers of Edge Ideals
Abstract: Let $G$ be a graph and let $I$ be the edge ideal of $G$. Our main results in this article provide lower bounds for the depth of the first three powers of $I$ in terms of the diameter of $G$. More precisely, we show that $\depth R/I^t \geq \left\lceil{\frac{d-4t+5}{3}} \right\rceil +p-1$, where $d$ is the diameter of $G$, $p$ is the number of connected components of $G$ and $1 \leq t \leq 3$. Depths and Cohen-Macaulay Properties of Path Ideals
Abstract: Given a tree T on n vertices, there is an associated ideal I of a polynomial ring in n variables over a field, generated by all paths of a fixed length of T. We show that such an ideal always satisfies the Konig property and classify all trees for which R/I is Cohen-Macaulay. More generally, we show that an ideal I whose generators correspond to any collection of subtrees of T satisfies the Konig… ▽ More

Associated primes of powers of edge ideals
Abstract: Let G be a graph and let I be its edge ideal. Our main result shows that the sets of associated primes of the powers of I form an ascending chain. It is known that the sets of associated primes of I(i) and intcl(I(i)) stabilize for large i, where "intcl" denotes integral closure and I(i) denotes the i-th power of I. Minimal Reductions and Cores of Edge Ideals

Depths of Powers of the Edge Ideal of a Tree
Abstract: Lower bounds are given for the depths of R/I^t for t at least one when I is the edge ideal of a tree or forest. The bounds are given in terms of the diameter of the tree, or in case of a forest, the largest diameter of a connected component and the number of connected components. These lower bounds provide a lower bound on the power for which the depths stabilize.

Embedded Associated Primes of Powers of Square-free Monomial Ideals

We develop a technique to inductively study normally torsion-free square-free monomial ideals. Cohen-Macaulay admissible clutters

For admissible clutters of greater heights, we give a family of examples to show that the conjecture may fail. When the… ▽ More
