We study the persistent currents and interspecies entanglement generation in a Bose-Bose mixture formed by two atomic gases (hereafter labelled by the letters A and B) trapped in a one-dimensional ring lattice potential with an artificial gauge field after a sudden quench from zero to strong interactions between the two gases. Assuming that the strength of these interactions is much larger than the single species energies and that the gas A is initially in the Mott-insulator regime, we show that the current of the gas B is reduced with respect to its value prior the interaction quench. Averaging fast oscillations out, the relative decrease of this current is independent of the initial visibility and Peierls phase of the gas B and behaves quadratically with the visibility of the gas A. The second Rényi entropy of the reduced state measuring the amount of entanglement between the two gases is found to scale linearly with the number of sites and to be proportional to the relative decrease of the current.

Systems which can spontaneously reveal periodic evolution are dubbed time crystals. This is in analogy with space crystals that display periodic behavior in configuration space. While space crystals are modelled with the help of space periodic potentials, crystalline phenomena in time can be modelled by periodically driven systems. Disorder in the periodic driving can lead to Anderson localization in time: the probability for detecting a system at a fixed point of configuration space becomes exponentially localized around a certain moment in time. We here show that a three-dimensional system exposed to a properly disordered pseudo-periodic driving may display a localized-delocalized Anderson transition in the time domain, in strong analogy with the usual three-dimensional Anderson transition in disordered systems. Such a transition could be experimentally observed with ultra-cold atomic gases.

We consider a quasiperiodic Aubry-Andre (AA) model and add a weak time-periodic and spatially quasiperiodic perturbation. The undriven AA model is chosen to be well in the insulating regime. The spatial quasiperiodic perturbation extends the model into two dimensions in reciprocal space. For a spatial resonance which reduces the reciprocal space dynamics to an effective one-dimensional two-leg ladder case, the ac perturbation resonantly couples certain groups of localized eigenstates of the undriven AA model and turns them into extended metallic ones. Slight detuning of the spatial and temporal frequencies off resonance returns these states into localized ones. We analyze the details of the resonant metallic eigenstates using Floquet representations. In particular, we find that their size grows linearly with the system size. Initial wave packets overlap with resonant metallic eigenstates and lead to ballistic spreading.

We study the generation of entanglement between two species of neutral cold atoms living on an optical ring lattice, where each group of particles can be described by a $d$-dimensional Hilbert space (qu$d$it). Synthetic magnetic fields are exploited to create an entangled state between the pair of qu$d$its. Maximally entangled eigenstates are found for well defined values of the Aharonov-Bohm phase, which are zero energy eigenstates of both the kinetic and interacting parts of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, making them quite exceptional and robust against certain non-perturbative fluctuations of the Hamiltonian. We propose a protocol to reach the maximally entangled state (MES) by starting from an initially prepared ground state. Also, an indirect method to detect the MES by measuring the current of the particles is proposed.

We show that gain and losses of the light beam, as well as the relative occupation probabilities of the bands involved in the transitions can be accurately managed upon tuning the amplitude of the non-Hermitian component of the lattice. Exact expressions for the transition and non-transition probabilities for a non-symmetric system obtained within a two-mode approximation are provided. These equations successfully account for the main features of the transitions in the optical lattice. We also interpret the non-conventional Bloch oscillations at criticality studied in Phys. Rev. We demonstrate the operation of a quantum ratchet in the absence of dissipative processes within the observation time (Hamiltonian regime). An atomic rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate is exposed to a sawtooth-like optical lattice potential, whose amplitude is periodically modulated in time. The ratchet transport arises from broken spatiotemporal symmetries of the driven potential, resulting in a desymmetrisation of transporting Eigenstates (Floquet states). The measured atomic current oscillates around a non-zero stationary value at longer observation times, shows resonances at positions determined by the photon recoil and depends on the initial phase of the drive, providing different lines of evidence for the full quantum character of the ratchet transport. The results provide a proof of principle demonstration of a quantum motor.

Abstract:
A new route to coherent destruction of tunneling is established by considering a monochromatic fast modulation of the self-interaction strength of a many-boson system. The modulation can be tuned such that only an arbitrarily, a priori prescribed number of particles are allowed to tunnel. The associated tunneling dynamics is sensitive to the odd or even nature of the number of bosons.

We study the rectification process of interacting quantum particles in a periodic potential exposed to the action of an external ac driving. A hallmark of quantum ratcheting is the appearance of resonant enhancement of the current (Europhys. Lett. 79 (2007) 10007 and Phys. Rev. A 75 (2007) 063424). Here we study the fate of these resonances within a Gross-Pitaevskii equation which describes a mean field interaction between many particles. We find, that the resonance is i) not destroyed by interactions, ii) shifting its location with increasing interaction strength. We trace the Floquet states of the linear equations into the nonlinear domain, and show that the resonance gives rise to an instability and thus to the appearance of new nonlinear Floquet states, whose transport properties differ strongly as compared to the case of noninteracting particles.

We study the quantum version of a tilting and flashing Hamiltonian ratchets, consisting of a periodic potential and a time-periodic driving field. The system dynamics is governed by a Floquet evolution matrix bearing the symmetry of the corresponding Hamiltonian. The dc-current appears due to the desymmetrization of Floquet eigenstates, which become transporting when all the relevant symmetries are violated. Those eigenstates which mostly contribute to a directed transport reside in phase space regions corresponding to classical resonances. Quantum dynamics leads to the dependence of the average velocity on the initial phase of the ac-field. A resonant enhancement (or suppression) of the dc-current, due to avoided crossings between different Floquet states takes place upon tuning some control parameters. Our studies are predominantly aimed at experimental realizations of ac-driven quantum ratchets with cold atoms.

Unidirectional motion of solitons can take place, although the applied force has zero average in time, when the spatial symmetry is broken by introducing a potential $V(x)$, which consists of periodically repeated cells with each cell containing an asymmetric array of strongly localized inhomogeneities at positions $x_{i}$. A collective coordinate approach shows that the positions, heights and widths of the inhomogeneities (in that order) are the crucial parameters so as to obtain an optimal effective potential $U_{opt}$ that yields a maximal average soliton velocity. $U_{opt}$ essentially exhibits two features: double peaks consisting of a positive and a negative peak, and long flat regions between the double peaks. Such a potential can be obtained by choosing inhomogeneities with opposite signs (e.g., microresistors and microshorts in the case of long Josephson junctions) that are positioned close to each other, while the distance between each peak pair is rather large. These results of the collective variables theory are confirmed by full simulations for the inhomogeneous sine-Gordon system.

Classical Hamiltonian ratchets have been recently successfully realized using cold atoms in driven optical lattices. Here we study the current rectification of the motion of a quantum particle in a periodic potential exposed to an external ac field. The dc current appears due to the desymmetrization of Floquet eigenstates, which become transporting. Quantum dynamics enhances the dependence of the current on the initial phase of the driving field. By changing the laser field parameters which control the degree of space-time asymmetry, Floquet eigenstates are tuned through avoided crossings. These quantum resonances induce resonant changes of the resulting current. The width, strength and position of these quantum resonances are tunable using control parameters of the experimental realization with cold atoms.

We study in detail the ratchet-like dynamics of topological solitons in homogeneous nonlinear Klein-Gordon systems driven by a bi-harmonic force. By using a collective coordinate approach with two degrees of freedom, namely the center of the soliton, $X(t)$, and its width, $l(t)$, we show, first, that energy is inhomogeneously pumped into the system, generating as result a directed motion; and, second, that the breaking of the time shift symmetry gives rise to a resonance mechanism that takes place whenever the width $l(t)$ oscillates with at least one frequency of the external ac force. In addition, we show that for the appearance of soliton ratchets, it is also necesary to break the time-reversal symmetry. We analyze in detail the effects of dissipation in the system, calculating the average velocity of the soliton as a function of the ac force and the dam**. We find current reversal phenomena depending on the parameter choice and discuss the important role played by the phases of the ac force. Our analytical calculations are confirmed by numerical simulations of the full partial differential equations of the sine-Gordon and $φ^4$ systems, which are seen to exhibit the same qualitative behavior. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental work on dissipation induced symmetry breaking.

We explain the underlying rectification mechanism within a collective coordinate framework, which shows that such system behaves as a rocking ratchet for point particles. Careful attention is given to the kink width dynamics and its role in the transport. We also analyze the robustness of our kink rocking ratchet in the presence of noise. We show that the noise activates unidirectional motion in a parameter range where such motion is not observed in the noiseless case. This is subsequently corroborated by the collective variable theory. An explanation for this new phenomenom is given.

We revisit the issue of directed motion induced by zero average forces in extended systems driven by ac forces. It has been shown recently that a directed energy current appears if the ac external force, $f(t)$, breaks the symmetry $f(t) = - f(t+T/2)$, $T$ being the period, if topological solitons (kinks) existed in the system. In this work, a collective coordinate approach allows us to identify the mechanism through which the width oscillation drives the kink and its relation with the mathematical symmetry conditions. Furthermore, our theory predicts, and numerical simulations confirm, that the direction of motion depends on the initial phase of the driving, while the system behaves in a ratchet-like fashion if averaging over initial conditions. Finally, the presence of noise overimposed to the ac driving does not destroy the directed motion; on the contrary, it gives rise to an activation process that increases the velocity of the motion. We conjecture that this could be a signature of resonant phenomena at larger noises.

We introduce and study a novel design for a ratchet potential for soliton excitations. The potential is implemented by means of an array of point-like (delta) inhomogeneities in an otherwise homogeneous potential. We develop a collective coordinate theory that predicts that the effective potential acting on the soliton is periodic but asymmetric and gives rise to the ratchet effect. Numerical simulations fully confirm this prediction; quantitative agreement is reached by an improved version of the theory. Although we specifically show that it is most interesting for building Josephson junction ratchets capable to rectify time-symmetric ac forces, the proposed mechanism is very general and can appear in many contexts, including biological systems.
