Experimental data indicates that predictions by available modelling for non-mass-limited targets are reasonable, with debris on the order of hundreds ug-per-shot. We present a novel scheme for rapid quantitative analysis of debris generated during experiments with solid targets following relativistic laser-plasma interaction at high-power laser facilities. Experimental data indicates that predictions by available modelling for non-mass-limited targets are reasonable, with debris on the order of hundreds ug-per-shot. We detect for the first time that several % of the debris is ejected directional following the target normal (rear- and interaction side); and confirm previous work that found the debris ejection in direction of the interaction side to be larger than on the side of the target rear.

Hydraulic Short Circuit (HSC) application allows the simultaneous pum** and generating operations on different units of the same pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) plants for the extension of the power consumption range. This article proposes a methodology based on time-history statistics and CFD numerical simulations to investigate the feasibility of integrating such a kind of operation in pre-existing hydropower plants. The evaluation of the potential power output and pressure drop analysis in the new HSC operation are presented. The penstock trifurcation of a selected PHES plant is also analysed by CFD simulations, by evaluating the loss-head coefficients and comparing the flow conditions in different PHES operations.

In particular, even still emulating the solution of crosswords puzzles, we provide decisive improvements over our recent approaches. In fact, by exploiting bandlimitedness and a suitable set of intersecting curves, we definitively lower the computational complexity (thus eliminating drawbacks) of our previous techniques. Numerical examples, concerning applications of actual interest, support the given theory and confirm the effectiveness of the developed procedure.

We introduce and discuss a new approach to the phase retrieval of fields radiated by continuous aperture sources having a circular support, which is of interest in many applications including the detection of shape deformations on reflector antennas. The approach is based on a decomposition of the actual 2-D problem into a number of 1-D phase retrieval problems along diameters and concentric rings of the visible part of the spectrum. In particular, the 1-D problems are effectively solved by using the spectral factorization method, while discrimination arguments at the crossing points allows to complete the retrieval of the 2-D complex field. The proposed procedure, which just requires a single set of far field amplitudes, takes advantage from up to now unexplored field properties and it is assessed in terms of reflector aperture fields.

A new approach to the design of graded Photonic Crystals (GPCs) devices is proposed by exploiting the inverse scattering framework as a synthesis tool. The introduced general methodology can be applied to arbitrary far-field specifications, thus allowing to design non-canonical devices. In particular, two different strategies are developed which allow to deal with GPCs with both graded refractive index (GPC_R) and graded filling factor (GPC_F). In both strategies, the inverse scattering problem is solved by a proper reformulation of the Contrast Source Inversion method wherein a proper rescaling of the amplitude of the primary sources is pursued. In particular, in the first one, the GPCs are obtained by exploiting homogenization theories. In the second one, the GPC_R profile is synthesized by exploiting a suitable representation basis for the unknown contrast function and, then, simple analytical formulas are used to determine a GPC_F. The proposed approach is assessed through the synthesis of an antenna generating $Σ/Δ$ reconfigurable patterns.

We present an innovative approach to the synthesis of linear arrays having the least possible number of elements while radiating shaped beams lying in completely arbitrary power masks. The approach, based on theory and procedures lend from Compressive Sensing, has two innovative key features. First, it exploits at best the multiplicity of equivalent field solutions corresponding to the many different power patterns lying in the given mask. Second, it a-priori optimizes those parameters that affect the performance of Compressive Sensing. The overall problem is formulated as two convex programming routines plus one local optimization, with the inherent advantages in terms of computational time and solutions optimality. An extensive numerical comparison against state-of-the-art procedures proves the effectiveness of the approach.

We propose a simple method based on the Aperture Antennas Theory to understand in a simple fashion limitations of OAM antennas in far-field links. Additional insight is also given by analyzing the properties of the operators relating source and far-field distributions for a given order of the vortex. The outcomes fully agree with the results recently achieved by Edfors, Craeye, and co-authors, and emphasize some additional draw-back. The "degrees of freedom" of the fields associated to the different orders of the vortices are also discussed.

In the 2 March 1979 issue of Science 203 S. J. Peale, P. Cassen and R. T. Reynolds published their paper "Melting of Io by tidal dissipation" indicating "the dissipation of tidal energy in Jupiter's moon Io is likely to have melted a major fraction of the mass." The conclusion of their paper was that "consequences of a largely molten interior may be evident in pictures of Io's surface returned by Voyager 1." Just three days after that, the Voyager 1 spacecraft would pass within 0.3 Jupiter radii of Io. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory navigation team's orbit estimation program as well as the team members themselves performed flawlessly. In regards to the optical navigation component image extraction of satellite centers in Voyager pictures taken for optical navigation at Jupiter rms post fit residuals were less than 0.25 pixels. The cognizant engineer of the Optical Navigation Image Processing System was astronomer Linda Morabito. Four days after the Voyager 1 encounter with Jupiter, after preforming image processing on a picture of Io taken by the spacecraft the day before, something anomalous emerged off the limb of Io. This historical review written by the discoverer recounts her minute-by-minute quest to identify what was a volcanic plume, the first evidence of active volcanism seen beyond Earth. Many ingredients of the account reflect historic themes in the process of scientific discovery.

The significance of jets and accretion disks in Astrophysics may be growing far beyond any single example of recent finds in the scientific journals. This brief review will summarize recent, significant manifestations of accretion disk powered jets in the universe. We then introduce supplemental contemporary finds in physics and astrophysics which might bear tangential or direct implications for astrophysics toward rethinking the universe with a major role of relativistic jets powered by accretion disks. We conclude with the direction our research will take in order to establish a new perspective on the universe.
