We present an automatic text expansion system to generate English sentences, which performs automatic Natural Language Generation (NLG) by combining linguistic rules with statistical approaches. Here, "automatic" means that the system can generate coherent and correct sentences from a minimum set of words. From its inception, the design is modular and adaptable to other languages. This adaptability is one of its greatest advantages. For English, we have created the highly precise aLexiE lexicon with wide coverage, which represents a contribution on its own. We have evaluated the resulting NLG library in an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) proof of concept, both directly (by regenerating corpus sentences) and manually (from annotations) using a popular corpus in the NLG field. We performed a second analysis by comparing the quality of text expansion in English to Spanish, using an ad-hoc Spanish-English parallel corpus. The system might also be applied to other domains such as report and news generation.

In Networked Control Systems (NCS), the absence of physical communication links in the loop leads to relevant issues, such as measurement delays and asynchronous execution of the control commands. These issues may lead to unwanted control behaviours. This ArXiv paper is intended to give additional results to the work presented in "Embedded Model Control of Networked Control Systems: an Experimental Case-study". The last one presents an original approach, based on the Embedded Model Control, to deal with experimental scenarios characterized by asynchronous control timing. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a differential-drive robot, first with high-fidelity simulations and finally with several experimental tests. Specifically, the present work aims to study the stability analysis of the EMC experimental setup and to give further experimental results, to complement those presented in the main paper, "Embedded Model Control of Networked Control Systems: an Experimental Case-study".

The problem of preferential sampling in geostatistics arises when the choise of location to be sampled is made with information about the phenomena in the study. The geostatistical model under preferential sampling deals with this problem, but parameter estimation is challenging because the likelihood function has no closed form. We developed an MCEM and an SAEM algorithm for finding the maximum likelihood estimators of parameters of the model and compared our methodology with the existing ones: Monte Carlo likelihood approximation and Laplace approximation. Simulated studies were realized to assess the quality of the proposed methods and showed good parameter estimation and prediction in preferential sampling. Finally, we illustrate our findings on the well known moss data from Galicia.

The goal of active aging is to promote changes in the elderly community so as to maintain an active, independent and socially-engaged lifestyle. Technological advancements currently provide the necessary tools to foster and monitor such processes. This paper reports on mid-term achievements of the European H2020 EMPATHIC project, which aims to research, innovate, explore and validate new interaction paradigms and platforms for future generations of personalized virtual coaches to assist the elderly and their carers to reach the active aging goal, in the vicinity of their home. The project focuses on evidence-based, user-validated research and integration of intelligent technology, and context sensing methods through automatic voice, eye and facial analysis, integrated with visual and spoken dialogue system capabilities. In this paper, we describe the current status of the system, with a special emphasis on its components and their integration, the creation of a Wizard of Oz platform, and findings gained from user interaction studies conducted throughout the first 18 months of the project.

As environmental concerns mostly drive the electrification of our economy and the corresponding increase in demand for battery storage systems, information about the potential environmental impacts of the different battery systems is required. However, this kind of information is scarce for emerging post-lithium systems such as the magnesium-sulfur (MgS) battery. Therefore, we use life cycle assessment following a cradle-to-gate perspective to quantify the cumulative energy demand and potential environmental impacts per Wh of the storage capacity of a hypothetical MgS battery (46 Wh/kg). Furthermore, we also estimate global warming potential (0.33 kg CO2 eq/Wh) , fossil depletion potential (0.09 kg oil eq / Wh), ozone depletion potential (2.5E-08 kg CFC-11/Wh) and metal depletion potential (0.044 kg Fe eq/Wh), associated with the MgS battery production. The battery is modelled based on an existing prototype MgS pouch cell and hypothetically optimised according to the current state of the art in lithium-ion batteries (LIB), exploring future improvement potentials. It turns out that the initial (non-optimised) prototype cell cannot compete with current LIB in terms of energy density or environmental performance, mainly due to the high share of non-active components, decreasing its performance substantially. Therefore, if the assumed evolutions of the MgS cell composition are achieved to overcome current design hurdles and reach a comparable lifespan, efficiency, cost and safety levels to that of existing LIB; then the MgS battery has significant potential to outperform both existing LIB, and lithium-sulfur batteries.

Knowing chemical soil properties might be determinant in crop management and total yield production. Traditional soil properties estimation approaches are time-consuming and require complex lab setups, refraining farmers from promptly taking steps towards optimal practices in their crops. Soil properties estimation from its spectral signals, vis-NIRS, emerged as a low-cost, non-invasive, and non-destructive alternative. Current approaches use mathematical and statistical techniques, avoiding machine learning frameworks. This proposal uses vis-NIRS in sugarcane soils and machine learning techniques such as three regression and six classification methods. The scope is to assess performance in predicting and inferring categories of common soil properties (pH, soil organic matter OM, Ca, Na, K, and Mg), evaluated by the most common metrics. We use regression to estimate properties and classification to assess soil property status. In both cases, we achieved comparable performance on similar setups reported in the literature for property estimation for pH($R^2$=0.8, $ρ$=0.89), OM($R^2$=0.37, $ρ$=0.63), Ca($R^2$=0.54, $ρ$=0.74), Mg($R^2$=0.44, $ρ$=0.66) in the validation set.

This paper provides general expression for Bartlett and Bartlett-type correction factors for the likelihood ratio and gradient statistics to test the dispersion parameter in heteroscedastic symmetric nonlinear models. This class of regression models is potentially useful for modeling data containing outlying observations. We consider a partition on the dispersion parameter vector in order to test the parameters of interest. Furthermore, we develop Monte Carlo simulations to compare the finite sample performances of the corrected tests proposed with the usual and modified score tests, likelihood and gradient tests, the Bartlett-type corrected score test and bootstrap corrected tests. Our simulation results favor the score and gradient corrected tests as well as the bootstrap tests. An empirical application is presented for illustrative purposes.

The highly diluted antiferromagnet Mn(0.35)Zn(0.65)F2 has been investigated by neutron scattering in zero field. The Bragg peaks observed below the Neel temperature TN (approximately 10.9 K) indicate stable antiferromagnetic long-range ordering at low temperature. The critical behavior is governed by random-exchange Ising model critical exponents (nu approximately 0.69 and gamma approximately 1.31), as reported for Mn(x)Zn(1-x)F2 with higher x and for the isostructural compound Fe(x)Zn(1-x)F2. However, in addition to the Bragg peaks, unusual scattering behavior appears for |q|>0 below a glassy temperature Tg approximately 7.0 K. The glassy region T<Tg corresponds to that of noticeable frequency dependence in earlier zero-field ac susceptibility measurements on this sample. These results indicate that long-range order coexists with short-range nonequilibrium clusters in this highly diluted magnet.

The diluted Ising antiferromagnet, Fe_{0.31}Zn_{0.69}F_{2}, has been investigated by dynamic susceptibility measurements in zero and and finite applied dc-fields. In zero field, there is a para- to antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_{N} \approx {20.0 K}$, followed by a dramatic slowing down of the dynamics at low temperatures. The latter described by a pure Arrhenius law. The effect of a superposed dc-field on the antiferromagnetic phase transition and on the low-temperature dynamics is investigated, and a comprehensive static and dynamic phase diagram in the H-T plane is derived. In agreement with earlier results on the same system, $T_{N}(H)$ follows a random-exchange Ising model to random-field Ising model crossover scaling for fields $H \leq 1.5 T$. A random-field induced glassy dynamics appears for higher values of H, where the antiferromagnetic phase transition is destroyed. The low-temperature dynamics shows striking similarities with the behavior observed in reentrant antiferromagnets.

The influence of a frustrated bond on the magnetic properties of a d=3 uniaxial (Ising) b.c.c. diluted antiferromagnet, with emphasis in the compound $Fe_{x}Zn_{1-x}F_{2}$, is investigated by a local mean-field numerical simulation. In particular we find that the initial drop of the saturation staggered magnetization ($M_{S}$) with concentration follows a percolation-like phenomenon characterized by an exponent $β_{p}$. For the frustrated samples, however, this regime is followed by a second one identified by a ``long tail" effect such that $M_{S}$ is zero only at the percolation threshold. Our numerical data also confirms a spin-glass phase near this threshold.
