Quantum machine learning algorithms are expected to play a pivotal role in quantum chemistry simulations in the immediate future. One such key application is the training of a quantum neural network to learn the potential energy surface and force field of molecular systems. We address this task by using the quantum extreme learning machine paradigm. This particular supervised learning routine allows for resource-efficient training, consisting of a simple linear regression performed on a classical computer. We have tested a setup that can be used to study molecules of any dimension and is optimized for immediate use on NISQ devices with a limited number of native gates. We have applied this setup to three case studies: lithium hydride, water, and formamide, carrying out both noiseless simulations and actual implementation on IBM quantum hardware. Compared to other supervised learning routines, the proposed setup requires minimal quantum resources, making it feasible for direct implementation on quantum platforms, while still achieving a high level of predictive accuracy compared to simulations. Our encouraging results pave the way towards the future application to more complex molecules, being the proposed setup scalable.

Quantum information scrambling (QIS) is a characteristic feature of several quantum systems, ranging from black holes to quantum communication networks. While accurately quantifying QIS is crucial to understanding many such phenomena, common approaches based on the tripartite information have limitations due to the accessibility issues of quantum mutual information, and do not always properly take into consideration the dependence on the encoding input basis. To address these issues, we propose a novel and computationally efficient QIS quantifier, based on a formulation of QIS in terms of quantum state discrimination. We show that the optimal guessing probability, which reflects the degree of QIS induced by an isometric quantum evolution, is directly connected to the accessible min-information, a generalized channel capacity based on conditional min-entropy, which can be cast as a convex program and thus computed efficiently. By applying our proposal to a range of examples with increasing complexity, we illustrate its ability to capture the multifaceted nature of QIS in all its intricacy.

The half-filled $t_{2g}$ shell of the $t_{2g}^3$ configuration usually, in LS coupling, hosts a S = 3/2 ground state with quenched orbital moment. This state is not Jahn-Teller active. Sufficiently large spin-orbit coupling $ζ$ has been predicted to change this picture by mixing in orbital moment, giving rise to a sizable Jahn-Teller distortion. In $5d^3$ K$_2$ReCl$_6$ we study the electronic excitations using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and optical spectroscopy. We observe on-site intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations below 2 eV and corresponding overtones with two intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations on adjacent sites, the Mott gap at 2.7 eV, $t_{2g}$-to-$e_g$ excitations above 3 eV, and charge-transfer excitations at still higher energy. The intra-$t_{2g}$ excitation energies are a sensitive measure of $ζ$ and Hund's coupling $J_H$. The sizable value of $ζ\approx$ 0.29 eV places K$_2$ReCl$_6$ into the intermediate coupling regime, but $ζ/J_H \approx 0.6$ is not sufficiently large to drive a pronounced Jahn-Teller effect. We discuss the ground state wavefunction in a Kanamori picture and find that the S = 3/2 multiplet still carries about 97 % of the weight. However, the finite admixture of orbital moment allows for subtle effects. We discuss small temperature-induced changes of the optical data and find evidence for a lowering of the ground state by about 3 meV below the structural phase transitions.

Inelastic x-ray scattering was used to observe the collective oscillations of the ions. With a highly improved energy resolution of $\sim$50 meV, we could clearly distinguish the Brillouin peaks from the quasielastic Rayleigh feature. Data at different wave numbers were utilized to derive a sound speed of 5.9$\pm$0.5 km/s, marking a high-temperature data point for methane and demonstrating consistency with Birch's law in this parameter regime.

The high frequency collective dynamics of liquid hydrogen fluoride is studied by inelastic x-ray scattering on the coexistence curve at T = 239 K. The comparison with existing molecular dynamics simulations shows the existence of two active relaxation processes with characteristic time scales in the subpicosecond range. The observed scenario is very similar to that found in liquid water. This suggests that hydrogen bonded liquids behave similarly to other very different systems as simple and glass forming liquids, thus indicating that these two relaxation processes are universal features of the liquid state.

We demonstrate that the cubic antifluorite-type halides K$_2$OsCl$_6$, K$_2$OsBr$_6$, and Rb$_2$OsBr$_6$ are excellent realizations of non-magnetic J=0 compounds. The magnetic susceptibility shows the corresponding Van-Vleck type behavior and no sign of defects. We investigate the electronic excitations with two complementary techniques, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and optical spectroscopy. This powerful combination allows us to thoroughly study, e.g., on-site intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations and $t_{2g}$-to-$e_g$ excitations as well as inter-site excitations across the Mott gap and an exciton below the gap. In this way, we determine the electronic parameters with high accuracy, altogether yielding a comprehensive picture. In K$_2$OsCl$_6$, we find the spin-orbit coupling constant $ζ$=0.34 eV, Hund's coupling $J_H$=0.43 eV, the onset of excitations across the Mott gap at $Δ$=2.2 eV, the cubic crystal-field splitting 10Dq=3.3 eV, and the charge-transfer energy $Δ_{CT}$=4.6 eV. With $J_H/ζ$=1.3, K$_2$OsCl$_6$ is in the intermediate-coupling regime. In a $t_{2g}$-only Kanamori picture, the above values correspond to $ζ^{eff}$=0.41 eV and $J_H^{eff}$=0.28 eV, which is very close to results reported for related $5d^4$ iridates. In the tetragonal phase at 5 K, the non-cubic crystal field causes a peak splitting of the J=1 state as small as 4 meV. Compared to K$_2$OsCl$_6$, the bromides K$_2$OsBr$_6$ and Rb$_2$OsBr$_6$ show about 12-14 % smaller values of 10Dq and $Δ_{CT}$, while the spin-orbit-entangled intra-$t_{2g}$ excitations below 2 eV and hence $ζ$ and $J_H$ are reduced by less than 4 %. Furthermore, the Mott gap in K$_2$OsBr$_6$ is reduced to about 1.8 eV.

Quantum information scrambling (QIS), from the perspective of quantum information theory, is generally understood as local non-retrievability of information evolved through some dynamical process, and is often quantified via entropic quantities such as the tripartite information. We argue that this approach comes with a number of issues, in large part due to its reliance on quantum mutual informations, which do not faithfully quantify correlations directly retrievable via measurements, and in part due to the specific methodology used to compute tripartite informations of the studied dynamics. We show that these issues can be overcome by using accessible mutual informations, defining corresponding ``accessible tripartite informations'', and provide explicit examples of dynamics whose scrambling properties are not properly quantified by the standard tripartite information. Our results lay the groundwork for a more profound understanding of what QIS represents, and reveal a number of promising, as of yet unexplored, venues for futher research.

Spin-orbit coupling locks spin direction and spatial orientation and generates, in semi-classical magnets, a local spin easy-axis and associated ordering. Quantum spin-1/2's defy this fate: rather than spins becoming locally anisotropic, the spin-spin interactions do. Consequently interactions become dependent on the spatial orientation of bonds between spins, prime theoretical examples of which are Kitaev magnets. Bond-directional interactions imply the existence of bond-directional magnetic modes, predicted spin excitations that render crystallographically equivalent bonds magnetically inequivalent, which yet have remained elusive experimentally. Here we show that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering allows us to explicitly probe the bond-directional character of magnetic excitations. To do so, we use a scattering plane spanned by one bond and the corresponding spin component and scan a range of momentum transfer that encompasses multiple Brillouin zones. Applying this approach to Na$_2$IrO$_3$ we establish the different bond-directional characters of magnetic excitations at 10 meV and 45 meV. Combined with the observation of spin-spin correlations that are confined to a single bond, this experimentally validates the Kitaev character of exchange interactions long proposed for this material.

Industries are considering the adoption of cloud computing for real-time applications due to current improvements in network latencies and the advent of Fog and Edge computing. To create an RT-cloud capable of hosting real-time applications, it is increasingly significant to improve the entire stack, including the containerization of applications, and their deployment and orchestration across nodes. However, state-of-the-art orchestrators (e.g., Kubernetes) and underlying container engines are designed for general-purpose applications. They ignore orchestration and management of shared resources (e.g. memory bandwidth, cache, shared interconnect) making them unsuitable for use with an RT-cloud. Taking inspiration from existing resource management architectures for multicore nodes, such as ACTORS, and for distributed mixed-criticality systems, such as the DREAMS, we propose a series of extensions in the way shared resources are orchestrated by Kubernetes and managed by the underlying Linux layers. Our approach allows fine-grained monitoring and allocation of low-level shared resources on nodes to provide better isolation to real-time containers and supports dynamic orchestration and balancing of containers across the nodes based on the availability and demand of shared resources.

These exhibit strong dependence on the length-scale, reflecting the marked wavevector dependence of lattice excitations. The extreme ultraviolet transient grating (EUV TG) approach has demonstrated the potential of accessing a wavevector range corresponding to the 10s of nm length-scale, representing a spatial scale of the highest relevance for fundamental physics and forefront technology, previously inaccessible by optical TG and other inelastic scattering methods. In this manuscript we report on the capabilities of this technique in the context of probing thermoelastic properties of matter, both in the bulk and at the surface, as well as discussing future developments and practical considerations.

We demonstrate that magnetism in Ba$_3$Ti$_{3-x}$Ir$_x$O$_9$ is governed by an unconventional realization of strong disorder, where cation disorder affects the character of the local moments. RIXS interferometry, studying the RIXS intensity over a broad range of transferred momentum q, is ideally suited to assign different excitations to different Ir sites. We find pronounced Ir-Ti site mixing. Both ions are distributed over two crystallographically inequivalent sites, giving rise to a coexistence of quasimolecular singlet states on Ir2O9 dimers and spin-orbit entangled j=1/2 moments of 5d$^5$ Ir$^{4+}$ ions. RIXS reveals different kinds of strong magnetic couplings for different bonding geometries, highlighting the role of cation disorder for the suppression of long-range magnetic order in this family of compounds.

The mixed-valent iridate Ba3InIr2O9 has been discussed as a promising candidate for quantum spin-liquid behavior. The compound exhibits Ir$^{4.5+}$ ions in face-sharing IrO6 octahedra forming Ir2O9 dimers with three t2g holes per dimer. Our results establish Ba3InIr2O9 as a cluster Mott insulator. Strong intra-dimer hop** delocalizes the three t2g holes in quasi-molecular dimer states while inter-dimer charge fluctuations are suppressed by Coulomb repulsion. The magnetism of Ba3InIr2O9 emerges from spin-orbit entangled quasi-molecular moments with yet unexplored interactions, opening up a new route to unconventional magnetic properties of 5d compounds. Using single-crystal x-ray diffraction we find the monoclinic space group C2/c already at room temperature. Dielectric spectroscopy shows insulating behavior. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) reveals a rich excitation spectrum below 1.5 eV with a sinusoidal dynamical structure factor that unambiguously demonstrates the quasi-molecular character of the electronic states. Below 0.3 eV, we observe a series of excitations. According to exact diagonalization calculations, such low-energy excitations reflect the proximity of Ba3InIr2O9 to a hop**-induced phase transition based on the condensation of a quasi-molecular spin-orbit exciton. The dimer ground state roughly hosts two holes in a bonding j=1/2 orbital and the third hole in a bonding j=3/2 orbital.

We compute the supersymmetry-breaking three-form fluxes generated by the addition of anti-D3 branes at the tip of a Klebanov-Strassler throat. These fluxes give rise to nontrivial terms in the superpotential when the throat is embedded in a flux compactification. We describe these terms both from a ten-dimensional and from a four-dimensional perspective and show that, upon including Kähler-moduli stabilization, the resulting potential admits de Sitter minima. Our proposed de Sitter construction does not require additional supersymmetry-breaking (0,3) fluxes, and hence is more minimalist than the KKLT proposal.

Liquid polymorphism is an intriguing phenomenon which has been found in a few single-component systems, the most famous being water. By supercooling liquid Te to more than 130 K below its melting point and performing simultaneous small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements, we observe clear maxima in its thermodynamic response functions around 615 K, suggesting the possible existence of liquid polymorphism. A close look at the underlying structural evolution shows the development of intermediate-range order upon cooling, most strongly around the thermodynamic maxima, which we attribute to bond-orientational ordering. The striking similarities between our results and those of water, despite the lack of hydrogen-bonding and tetrahedrality in tellurium, indicate that water-like anomalies may be a general phenomenon among liquid systems with competing bond- and density-ordering.

This prevents the gauge theory from develo** a smooth quantum moduli space and affects the global structure of the gauge group, muting it from $SO$ to $O_+$ . The confining dualities provide tools to deconfine fields transforming in the symmetric rank-$2$ representation of classical gauge groups. As an application, we propose and derive S-confining dualities for $SO(N)$ $(Sp(N))$ gauge theories with an adjoint and $1$ $(2)$ fundamentals, respectively. Despite the technological importance of supercritical fluids, controversy remains about the details of their microscopic dynamics. In this work, we study four supercritical fluid systems -- water, Si, Te, and Lennard-Jones fluid -- \emph{via} classical molecular dynamics simulations. A universal two-component behavior is observed in the intermolecular dynamics of these systems, and the changing ratio between the two components leads to a crossover from liquidlike to gaslike dynamics, most rapidly around the Widom line. We find evidence to connect the liquidlike component dominating at lower temperatures with intermolecular bonding, and the component prominent at higher temperatures with free-particle, gaslike dynamics. The ratio between the components can be used to describe important properties of the fluid, such as its self-diffusion coefficient, in the transition region. Our results provide insight into the fundamental mechanism controlling the dynamics of supercritical fluids, and highlight the role of spatiotemporally inhomogenous dynamics even in thermodynamic states where no large-scale fluctuations exist in the fluid.

A number of fundamental relations were recast into absolute deviations from zero, which have been used to assess the performance of some popular DFT functionals. Extended TD-DFT calculations have been carried out for a pool of molecules chosen to the purpose, adopting a large basis set to ensure high quality results. The fully deconfined dual quiver has $N$ nodes, and can be interpreted as an Aharony dual of theories with rank-$2$ matter. All chiral ring generators of the original theory are mapped into gauge singlet fields of the fully deconfined quiver dual.

The boson peak (BP) is an excess of vibrational states over the Debye law appearing at terahertz frequencies. It is found in all glasses and marks the crossover between the long-wavelength behavior, where the solid can be considered as an isotropic continuum, and the region where the wavelength of the sound wave starts to experience the microscopic details of the structure. This chapter is devoted to a review of the main experimental observations regarding the vibrational dynamics of amorphous solids, as detected by neutron and X-ray scattering techniques. A first part of the chapter is devoted to the measurements of the BP and its evolution as a function of external parameters, such as temperature, pressure, or density. The second part of the chapter reviews the wavevector evolution of the dynamic structure factor, which provides evidence of a pseudo-acoustic propagating mode up to frequencies comparable to those of the BP. This longitudinal mode has a sound attenuation which follows the Rayleigh scattering law and a negative dispersion that can partially explain the deviation from the Debye law. At higher frequencies, the inelastic spectrum presents a complex pattern of vibrations, with evidences of two peaks in various systems. To conclude, we will highlight the information that can be gained on the nature of the glass vibrational modes from a comparison with the dynamics of the corresponding polycrystal.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements on CaIrO$_3$ reveal a prototypical $j_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospinon continuum, a hallmark of one-dimensional (1D) magnetic systems despite its three-dimensional crystal structure. The experimental spectra compare very well to the calculated magnetic dynamical structure factor of weakly coupled spin-1/2 chains. We attribute the onset of such quasi-1D magnetism to the fundamental difference in the magnetic interactions between the $j_\mathrm{eff} = 1/2$ pseudospins along the corner- and edge-sharing bonds in CaIrO$_3$.

The obtained longitudinal current correlation spectra can be decomposed into two main components: a low-frequency (LF), gas-like component and a high-frequency (HF) component arising from the O--O stretching mode between hydrogen-bonded molecules, reminiscent of the longitudinal acoustic mode in ambient water. With increasing temperature, the hydrogen-bond network diminishes and the spectral weight shifts from HF to LF, leading to a transition from liquid-like to gas-like dynamics with rapid changes around the Widom line.

In load balancing problems there is a set of clients, each wishing to select a resource from a set of permissible ones, in order to execute a certain task. Each resource has a latency function, which depends on its workload, and a client's cost is the completion time of her chosen resource. Two fundamental variants of load balancing problems are {\em selfish load balancing} (aka. {\em load balancing games}), where clients are non-cooperative selfish players aimed at minimizing their own cost solely, and {\em online load balancing}, where clients appear online and have to be irrevocably assigned to a resource without any knowledge about future requests. We revisit both selfish and online load balancing under the objective of minimizing the {\em Nash Social Welfare}, i.e., the geometric mean of the clients' costs. To the best of our knowledge, despite being a celebrated welfare estimator in many social contexts, the Nash Social Welfare has not been considered so far as a benchmarking quality measure in load balancing problems. We provide tight bounds on the price of anarchy of pure Nash equilibria and on the competitive ratio of the greedy algorithm under very general latency functions, including polynomial ones. For this particular class, we also prove that the greedy strategy is optimal as it matches the performance of any possible online algorithm.

AdS$_7$ supersymmetric solutions in type IIA have been classified, and they are infinitely many. Moreover, every such solution has a non-supersymmetric sister. In this paper, we study the perturbative and non-perturbative stability of these non-supersymmetric solutions, focusing on cases without orientifolds. Perturbatively, we first look at the KK spectrum of spin-2 excitations. This does not exhibit instabilities, but it does show that there is no separation of scales for either the BPS and the non-BPS case, thus proving for supersymmetric AdS$_7$ a well-known recent conjecture. We then use 7d gauged supergravity and a brane polarization computation to access part of the spectrum of KK scalars. The result signals an instability for all non-supersymmetric solutions except those that have a single D8 on each side. We finally look at non-perturbative instabilities, and find that NS5 bubbles make these remaining solutions decay.

The continuous development of synchrotron-based experimental techniques in the X-ray range provides new possibilities to probe the structure and the dynamics of bulk materials down to inter-atomic distances. However, the interaction of intense X-ray beams with matter can also induce changes in the structure and dynamics of materials. A reversible and non-destructive beam induced dynamics has recently been observed in X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy experiments in some oxide glasses at sufficiently low absorbed doses, and is here investigated in a (Li$_2$O)$_{0.5}$(B$_2$O$_3$)$_{0.5}$ glass. The characteristic time of this induced dynamics is inversely proportional to the intensity of the X-ray beam, with a coefficient that depends on the chemical composition and local structure of the probed glass, making it a potentially new tool to investigate fundamental properties of a large class of disordered systems. While the exact mechanisms behind this phenomenon are yet to be elucidated, we report here on the measurement of the exchanged wave-vector (and thus length-scale) dependence of the characteristic time of this induced dynamics, and show that it follows the same power-law observed in vitreous silica. This supports the idea that a unique explanation for this effect in different oxide glasses should be looked for.

In the quest for realizations of quantum spin liquids, the exploration of Kitaev materials - spin-orbit entangled Mott insulators with strong bond-directional exchanges - has taken center stage. However, in these materials the local spin-orbital j=1/2 moments typically show long-range magnetic order at low temperature, thus defying the formation of a spin-liquid ground state. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we here report on a proximate spin liquid regime with clear fingerprints of Kitaev physics in the magnetic excitations of the honeycomb iridates alpha-Li2IrO3 and Na2IrO3. We observe a broad continuum of magnetic excitations that persists up to at least 300K, more than an order of magnitude larger than the magnetic ordering temperatures. We prove the magnetic character of this continuum by an analysis of the resonance behavior. RIXS measurements of the dynamical structure factor for energies within the continuum show that dynamical spin-spin correlations are restricted to nearest neighbors. Notably, these spectroscopic observations are also present in the magnetically ordered state for excitation energies above the conventional magnon excitations. Phenomenologically, our data agree with inelastic neutron scattering results on the related honeycomb compound RuCl3, establishing a common ground for a proximate Kitaev spin-liquid regime in these materials.

The purpose of this writing is to show that, if we use the definition of elementary $\infty$-topos that has been proposed by Mike Shulman, then the fact that every geometric $\infty$-topos satisfies the required axioms, more specifically the last one of them, is actually something close to a large cardinal assumption. Putting it precisely, we will show that, once a Grothendieck universe has been chosen, the fact that every geometric $\infty$-topos satisfies Shulman's axioms is equivalent to saying that the Grothendieck universe was 1-inaccessible to start with, a condition which is strictly stronger than just being inaccessible. Moreover, a perfectly analogous result can be shown if instead of geometric $\infty$-toposes our analysis relies on ordinary sheaf toposes. In conclusion, it will be shown that, under stronger assumptions positing the existence of 1-inaccessible cardinals inside the Grothendieck universe, examples of Shulman $\infty$-toposes which are not geometric can be found.

We investigate such phenomena in a large class of three dimensional superconformal field theories, known as the S-fold SCFTs. Supersymmetric indices are computed for a number of theories containing small rank gauge groups. Dualities between S-fold theories that have different quiver descriptions are also analysed. We explore a new class of theories with a discrete global symmetry, whose gauge symmetry in the quiver has a different global structure from those that have been studied earlier.

In the undercooled liquid phase the decay times of the measured correlation functions are consistent with visible light scattering results and independent of the incoming flux; in the glass they are instead temperature independent and show a definite dependence on the X-ray flux. This dependence can be exploited to obtain information on the volume occupied by the atoms that move in the glass following an absorption event. The length scale derived in this way, of the order of the nanometer, is consistent with that reported for the dynamical heterogeneities, suggesting the existence of a new scheme to get access to this fundamental quantity.

A local SL(2,Z) transformation on the Type IIB brane configuration gives rise to an interesting class of superconformal field theories, known as the S-fold CFTs. Previously it has been proposed that the corresponding quiver theory has a link involving the T(U(N)) theory. In this paper, we generalise the preceding result by studying quivers that contain a T(G) link, where G is self-dual under S-duality. In particular, the cases of G = SO(2N), USp'(2N) and G_2 are examined in detail. We propose the theories that arise from an appropriate insertion of an S-fold into a brane system, in the presence of an orientifold threeplane or an orientifold fiveplane. By analysing the moduli spaces, we test such a proposal against its S-dual configuration using mirror symmetry. The case of G_2 corresponds to a novel class of quivers, whose brane construction is not available. We present several mirror pairs, containing G_2 gauge groups, that have not been discussed before in the literature.

Young's archetypal double-slit experiment forms the basis for modern diffraction techniques: the elastic scattering of waves yields an interference pattern that captures the real-space structure. Here, we report on an inelastic incarnation of Young's experiment and demonstrate that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measures interference patterns which reveal the symmetry and character of electronic excited states in the same way as elastic scattering does for the ground state. A prototypical example is provided by the quasi-molecular electronic structure of insulating Ba3CeIr2O9 with structural Ir dimers and strong spin-orbit coupling. The double 'slits' in this resonant experiment are the highly localized core levels of the two Ir atoms within a dimer. The clear double-slit-type sinusoidal interference patterns that we observe allow us to characterize the electronic excitations, demonstrating the power of RIXS interferometry to unravel the electronic structure of solids containing, e.g., dimers, trimers, ladders, or other superstructures.

We establish the double perovskite Ba$_2$CeIrO$_6$ as a nearly ideal model system for j=1/2 moments, with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering indicating a deviation of less than 1% from the ideally cubic j=1/2 state. The local j=1/2 moments form an fcc lattice and are found to order antiferromagnetically at $T_N$=14K, more than an order of magnitude below the Curie-Weiss temperature. Model calculations show that the geometric frustration of the fcc Heisenberg antiferromagnet is further enhanced by a next-nearest neighbor exchange, indicated by ab initio theory. Magnetic order is driven by a bond-directional Kitaev exchange and by local distortions via a strong magneto-elastic effect - both effects are typically not expected for j=1/2 compounds making Ba2CeIrO6 a riveting example for the rich physics of spin-orbit entangled Mott insulators.

An S-fold has played an important role in constructing supersymmetric field theories with interesting features. It can be viewed as a type of AdS_4 solutions of Type IIB string theory where the fields in overlap** patches are glued by elements of SL(2,Z). This paper examines three dimensional quiver theories that arise from brane configurations with an inclusion of the S-fold. An important feature of such a quiver is that it contains a link, which is the T(U(N)) theory, between two U(N) groups, along with bifundamental and fundamental hypermultiplets. We systematically study the moduli spaces of those quiver theories, including the cases in which the non-zero Chern-Simons levels are turned on. A number of such moduli spaces turns out to have a very rich structure and tells us about the brane dynamics in the presence of an S-fold.

A notable class of superconformal theories (SCFTs) in six dimensions is parameterized by an integer $N$, an ADE group $G$, and two nilpotent elements $μ_\mathrm{L,R}$ in $G$. Nilpotent elements have a natural partial ordering, which has been conjectured to coincide with the hierarchy of renormalization-group flows among the SCFTs. In this paper we test this conjecture for $G=\mathrm{SU}(k)$, where AdS$_7$ duals exist in IIA. We work with a seven-dimensional gauged supergravity, consisting of the gravity multiplet and two $\mathrm{SU}(k)$ non-Abelian vector multiplets. We show that this theory has many supersymmetric AdS$_7$ vacua, determined by two nilpotent elements, which are naturally interpreted as IIA AdS$_7$ solutions. The BPS equations for domain walls connecting two such vacua can be solved analytically, up to a Nahm equation with certain boundary conditions. The latter admit a solution connecting two vacua if and only if the corresponding nilpotent elements are related by the natural partial ordering, in agreement with the field theory conjecture.

We investigate strong Nash equilibria in the \emph{max $k$-cut game}, where we are given an undirected edge-weighted graph together with a set $\{1,\ldots, k\}$ of $k$ colors. Nodes represent players and edges capture their mutual interests. The strategy set of each player $v$ consists of the $k$ colors. When players select a color they induce a $k$-coloring or simply a coloring. Given a coloring, the \emph{utility} (or \emph{payoff}) of a player $u$ is the sum of the weights of the edges $\{u,v\}$ incident to $u$, such that the color chosen by $u$ is different from the one chosen by $v$. Such games form some of the basic payoff structures in game theory, model lots of real-world scenarios with selfish agents and extend or are related to several fundamental classes of games.
Very little is known about the existence of strong equilibria in max $k$-cut games. In this paper we make some steps forward in the comprehension of it. We first show that improving deviations performed by minimal coalitions can cycle, and thus answering negatively the open problem proposed in \cite{DBLP:conf/tamc/GourvesM10}. Next, we turn our attention to unweighted graphs. We first show that any optimal coloring is a 5-SE in this case. Then, we introduce $x$-local strong equilibria, namely colorings that are resilient to deviations by coalitions such that the maximum distance between every pair of nodes in the coalition is at most $x$. We prove that $1$-local strong equilibria always exist. Finally, we show the existence of strong Nash equilibria in several interesting specific scenarios.

We study the existence of allocations of indivisible goods that are envy-free up to one good (EF1), under the additional constraint that each bundle needs to be connected in an underlying item graph. If the graph is a path and the utility functions are monotonic over bundles, we show the existence of EF1 allocations for at most four agents, and the existence of EF2 allocations for any number of agents; our proofs involve discrete analogues of the Stromquist's moving-knife protocol and the Su--Simmons argument based on Sperner's lemma. For identical utilities, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm that computes an EF1 allocation for any number of agents. For the case of two agents, we characterize the class of graphs that guarantee the existence of EF1 allocations as those whose biconnected components are arranged in a path; this property can be checked in linear time.

In this paper we consider a generalization of the well-known budgeted maximum coverage problem. We are given a ground set of elements and a set of bins. The goal is to find a subset of elements along with an associated set of bins, such that the overall cost is at most a given budget, and the profit is maximized. Each bin has its own cost and the cost of each element depends on its associated bin. The profit is measured by a monotone submodular function over the elements. We first present an algorithm that guarantees an approximation factor of $\frac{1}{2}\left(1-\frac{1}{e^α}\right)$, where $α\leq 1$ is the approximation factor of an algorithm for a sub-problem. We give two polynomial-time algorithms to solve this sub-problem. The first one gives us $α=1- ε$ if the costs satisfies a specific condition, which is fulfilled in several relevant cases, including the unitary costs case and the problem of maximizing a monotone submodular function under a knapsack constraint. The second one guarantees $α=1-\frac{1}{e}-ε$ for the general case. The gap between our approximation guarantees and the known inapproximability bounds is $\frac{1}{2}$.
We extend our algorithm to a bi-criterion approximation algorithm in which we are allowed to spend an extra budget up to a factor $β\geq 1$ to guarantee a $\frac{1}{2}\left(1-\frac{1}{e^{αβ}}\right)$-approximation. If we set $β=\frac{1}α\ln \left(\frac{1}{2ε}\right)$, the algorithm achieves an approximation factor of $\frac{1}{2}-ε$, for any arbitrarily small $ε>0$.

Their R-symmetry is respectively SO(7) and $G_2$, and the amount of supersymmetry ${\cal N}=8$ and ${\cal N}=7$. We find that there exist two (locally) unique solutions in type IIA supergravity that realize these superalgebras, and we provide their analytic expressions. In both cases, the internal space is obtained by a round six-sphere fibred over an interval, with an O8-plane at one end. The R-symmetry is the symmetry group of the sphere; in the $G(3)$ case, it is broken to $G_2$ by fluxes. We also find several numerical ${\cal N}=1$ solutions with $G_2$ flavor symmetry, with various localized sources, including O2-planes and O8-planes.

We describe a setup for performing inelastic X-ray scattering measurements at the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) endstation of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). This technique is capable of performing high-, meV-resolution measurements of dynamic ion features in both crystalline and non-crystalline materials. A four-bounce silicon (533) monochromator was used in conjunction with three silicon (533) diced crystal analyzers to provide an energy resolution of ~50 meV over a range of ~500 meV in single shot measurements. In addition to the instrument resolution function, we demonstrate the measurement of longitudinal acoustic phonon modes in polycrystalline diamond. Furthermore, this setup may be combined with the high intensity laser drivers available at MEC to create warm dense matter, and subsequently measure ion acoustic modes.

Firstly, a $D=4$, SO(4)--invariant restricted duality hierarchy is constructed and used to uplift the entire, dynamical SO(4)--invariant sector to massive type IIA. The resulting consistent uplift formulae are used to obtain a new local expression for the ${\cal N} = 3 $ AdS$_4$ solution in massive IIA and analyse its geometry. Locally, the internal $S^6$ geometry corresponds to a warped fibration of $S^2$ and a hemisphere of $S^4$. This can be regarded as a warped generalisation of the usual twistor fibration geometry. Finally, the triplet of Killing spinors corresponding to the ${\cal N}=3$ solution are constructed and shown to obey the massive type IIA Killing spinor equations.

In coalition formation games self-organized coalitions are created as a result of the strategic interactions of independent agents. For each couple of agents $(i,j)$, weight $w_{i,j}=w_{j,i}$ reflects how much agents $i$ and $j$ benefit from belonging to the same coalition. We consider the modified fractional hedonic game, that is a coalition formation game in which agents' utilities are such that the total benefit of agent $i$ belonging to a coalition (given by the sum of $w_{i,j}$ over all other agents $j$ belonging to the same coalition) is averaged over all the other members of that coalition, i.e., excluding herself. Modified fractional hedonic games constitute a class of succinctly representable hedonic games.
We are interested in the scenario in which agents, individually or jointly, choose to form a new coalition or to join an existing one, until a stable outcome is reached. To this aim, we consider common stability notions, leading to strong Nash stable outcomes, Nash stable outcomes or core stable outcomes: we study their existence, complexity and performance, both in the case of general weights and in the case of 0-1 weights. In particular, we completely characterize the existence of the considered stable outcomes and show many tight or asymptotically tight results on the performance of these natural stable outcomes for modified fractional hedonic games, also highlighting the differences with respect to the model of fractional hedonic games, in which the total benefit of an agent in a coalition is averaged over all members of that coalition, i.e., including herself.
