In biomedical research and the practice of cancer therapy, gold nanoparticles have been used to visualize malignant tumors, as the heated bodies for hyperthermia of cancer cells, as drug carriers to deliver drugs to a cancer cell, but, to the best of our knowledge, they have not yet been used consciously as the sources of terahertz (THz) radiation delivered to a cancer cell that contributes to the inhibition of cell activity. It is predicted here that gold nanoparticles less than 8 nm in size are sources of spontaneous THz radiation, and the possibility of their application in oncology is due to the known effects of THz radiation on the cells of living organisms. There are indications that nanoparticles with a size comparable to the width of the major groove of the DNA molecule will be the most effective. Another effect that has not yet been taken into account in biomedical studies using gold nanoparticles is that of local electric fields due to the contact potential difference above edges and vertices of gold nanoclusters. The prerequisites and possibilities for searching for the manifestations of these two effects when gold nanoparticles are introduced into living cells of organisms are considered.

Purpose: The terahertz (THz) medical imaging is a promising noninvasive technique for monitoring the skin's conditions, early detection of the human skin cancer, and recovery from burns and wounds. It can be applied for visualization of healing process directly through clinical dressings and restorative ointments, minimizing the frequency of dressing changes. The THz imaging technique is cost effective, as compared to the magnetic resonance method. Our aim was to develop an approach capable of providing better image resolution than the commercially available THz imaging cameras. Approach: The terahertz-to-infrared (THz-to-IR) converters can visualize the human skin cancer by converting the latter's specific contrast patterns recognizable in THz radiation range into IR patterns, detectable by a standard IR imaging camera. At the core of suggested THz-to-IR converters are flat matrices transparent both in the THz range to be visualized and in the operating range of the IR camera; these matrices contain embedded metal nanoparticles, which, when irradiated with THz rays, convert the energy of THz photons into heat and become nanosources of IR radiation detectable by an IR camera. Results: The ways of creating the simplest converter, as well as a more complex converter with wider capabilities, are considered. The first converter is a gelatin matrix with gold 8.5 nm diameter nanoparticles, the second is a polystyrene matrix with 2 nm diameter nanoparticles from copper-nickel MONEL (c) alloy 404. Conclusions: An approach with a THz-to-IR converter equipped with an IR camera is promising in that it could provide a better image of oncological pathology than the commercially available THz imaging cameras do.

It is shown that in GNBs, by choosing their sizes, it is possible to provide conditions for converting the energy of longitudinal phonons with THz frequencies into the energy of THz photons. The prospects of designing GNBs-based soft THz radiation sources (frequencies: 0.14; 0.24; 0.41 and 0.70 THz) with a large flow cross-section (diameter ~40 cm) intended for detection of hidden objects under clothing to ensure security in public places (airports, railway stations, stadiums, etc.) are assessed. The choice of the above frequencies is a compromise between the requirements of low absorption of THz radiation by water vapor in air, good penetration through the fabric of clothing, favoring a sufficient resolution of the imaging system, and an abundance of corresponding longitudinal phonons, capable of exciting Fermi electrons in GNBs. Estimates of the characteristics of the terahertz-to-infrared converter based on gold nanospheres (GNSs), which could work in tandem with these sources of THz radiation -- as a means of visualization of hidden objects -- are also given.

The central element of the device is the THz-to-IR converter, a Teflon or silicon film matrix with embedded 8.5 nm diameter gold nanoparticles. The use of external THz source for irradiating the biological tissue sample is presumed. The converter's temporal characteristics enable its performance in a real-time scale. The details of design suited for the operation in transmission mode (in vitro) or on the human skin in reflection mode {in vivo) are specified.

We suggest that the size effect in heterogeneous catalysis on gold nanoparticles (GNP) of ~1.3 - 9 nm size can be related to spontaneous terahertz (THz) emission of GNPs in the process of channeling the energy of longitudinal phonons therein into THz electromagnetic radiation. Since rotational and vibrational energy levels of molecules adsorbed on the GNP surface are in the THz range, the irradiation by self-induced THz photons would engage the molecules' swing and twisting, which in its turn would weaken or break the intramolecular bonds, facilitating their entering a chemical reaction on the GNP surface.

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) may serve as "devices" to emit electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz (THz) range, whereby the energy is delivered by radio frequency or microwave photons which won't by themselves induce transitions between sparse confinement-shaped electron levels of a GNP, but may borrow the energy from longitudinal acoustic phonons to overcome the confinement gap. Upon excitation, the Fermi electron cannot relax otherwise than via emitting a THz photon, the other relaxation channels being blocked by force of shape and size considerations. Within this general scope that has been already outlined earlier, the present work specifically discusses two-phonon processes, namely (i) a combined absorption-emission of two phonons from the top of the longitudinal acoustic branch, and (ii) an absorption of two such phonons with nearly identical wavevectors. The case (i) may serve as a source of "soft" THz radiation (at ~0.54 THz), the case (ii) the "hard" THz radiation at 8.7 THz. Numerical estimates are done for crystalline particles in the shape of rhombicuboctahedra, of 5 - 7 nm "diameter". A technical realisation of this idea is briefly discussed, assuming the deposition of GNPs onto / within the substrate of Teflon, the material sustaining high temperatures and transparent in the THz range.

It is suggested that in gold nanoparticles (GNPs) of about 5 nm sizes used in the radiofrequency (RF) hyperthermia, an absorption of the RF photon by the Fermi electron occurs with involvement of the longitudinal acoustic vibrational mode (LAVM), the dominating one in the distribution of vibrational density of states (VDOS). This physical mechanism helps to explain two observed phenomena: the size dependence of the heating rate (HR) in GNPs and reduced heat production in aggregated GNPs. The argumentation proceeds within the one-electron approximation, taking into account the discretenesses of energies and momenta of both electrons and LAVMs. The heating of GNPs is thought to consist of two consecutive processes: first, the Fermi electron absorbs simultaneously the RF photon and the LAVM available in the GNP; hereafter the excited electron gets relaxed within the GNP's boundary, exciting a LAVM with the energy higher than that of the previously absorbed LAVM. GNPs containing the Ta and/or Fe impurities are proposed for the RF hyperthermia as promising heaters with enhanced HRs, and GNPs with rare-earth impurity atoms are also brought into consideration. It is shown why the maximum HR values should be expected in GNPs with about 5-7 nm size.
