Large-Scale Production of Monitored Drift Tube Chambers for the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer

Performance of the ATLAS Precision Muon Chambers under LHC Operating Conditions

Abstract: For the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector at the large hadron collider (LHC), large drift chambers consisting of 6 to 8 layers of pressurized drift tubes are used for precision tracking covering an active area of 5000 m2 in the toroidal field of superconducting air core magnets. The chambers have to provide a spatial resolution of 41 microns with Ar:CO2 (93:7) gas mixture at an absolute pres… ▽ More For the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector at the large hadron collider (LHC), large drift chambers consisting of 6 to 8 layers of pressurized drift tubes are used for precision tracking covering an active area of 5000 m2 in the toroidal field of superconducting air core magnets. The chambers have to provide a spatial resolution of 41 microns with Ar:CO2 (93:7) gas mixture at an absolute pressure of 3 bar and gas gain of 2?104. The environment in which the chambers will be operated is characterized by high neutron and background with counting rates of up to 100 per square cm and second. The resolution and efficiency of a chamber from the serial production for ATLAS has been investigated in a 100 GeV muon beam at photon irradiation rates as expected during LHC operation. A silicon strip detector telescope was used as external reference in the beam. The spatial resolution of a chamber is degraded by 4 ?m at the highest background rate. The detection efficiency of the drift tubes is unchanged under irradiation. A tracking efficiency of 98% at the highest rates has been demonstrated. △ Less

Conjugacy Classes in Kac-Moody Groups and Principal G-Bundles over Elliptic Curves

Abstract: For a simple complex Lie group G the connected components of the moduli space of G-bundles over an elliptic curve are weighted projective spaces. In this note we will provide a new proof of this result using the invariant theory of Kac-Moody groups, in particular the action of the (twisted) Coxeter element on the root system of G. A Steinberg Cross-Section for Non-Connected Affine Kac-Moody Groups

Abstract: We generalise the concept of a Steinberg cross-section to non-connected Kac-Moody group. As in the connected case, which was treated by G. Brüchert, a quotient map w.r.t the conjugacy action exists only on a certain submonoid of the Kac-Moody group. Non-connected Kac-Moody groups appear naturally as semidirect product of \C^* with a central extension of loop groups LG, where the underlying simpl… ▽ More We generalise the concept of a Steinberg cross-section to non-connected Kac-Moody group. As in the connected case, which was treated by G. Brüchert, a quotient map w.r.t the conjugacy action exists only on a certain submonoid of the Kac-Moody group. Non-connected Kac-Moody groups appear naturally as semidirect product of \C^* with a central extension of loop groups LG, where the underlying simple group G is no longer simply connected and might even be non-connected. In contrast to the connected case, the understanding of central extensions of non-connected loop groups is a rather complicated issue. Following the approach of V. Toledano Laredo, who dealt with the case of automorphisms coming from the fundamental group pi_1(G), we classify all of these central extensions for cyclic component group of LG. Then, we define the quotient map w.r.t conjugacy action. Furthermore, we construct the cross-section in every connected component of LG and show that, due the one-dimensional centre, it carries a natural \C^*-action which does not exist in the finite dimensional case. △ Less

Twisted conjugacy classes, coadjoint orbits of loop groups and D-branes in the WZW-model

Vector Mesons and pQCD at HERA

Abstract: An overview of recent results from the H1 and ZEUS collaborations on vector meson production in electron-proton collisions at HERA is given. For diffractive vector meson production the energy dependence is discussed. The dependences on different scales, M_VM, Q^2 and |t|, are investigated. The data are compared to pQCD theoretical calculations.
