The ability of mechanical systems to perform basic computations has gained traction over recent years, providing an unconventional alternative to digital computing in off grid, low power, and severe environments which render the majority of electronic components inoperable. However, much of the work in mechanical computing has focused on logic operations via quasi-static prescribed displacements in origami, bistable, and soft deformable matter. In here, we present a first attempt to describe the fundamental framework of an elastic neuromorphic metasurface that performs distinct classification tasks, providing a new set of challenges given the complex nature of elastic waves with respect to scattering and manipulation. Multiple layers of reconfigurable waveguides are phase-trained via constant weights and trainable activation functions in a manner that enables the resultant wave scattering at the readout location to focus on the correct class within the detection plane. We further demonstrate the neuromorphic system's reconfigurability in performing two distinct tasks, eliminating the need for costly remanufacturing.

Unraveling real eigenfrequencies in non-Hermitian $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians has opened new avenues in quantum physics, photonics, and most recently, phononics. Unraveling real eigenfrequencies in non-Hermitian $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians has opened new avenues in quantum physics, photonics, and most recently, phononics. However, the existing literature squarely focuses on exploiting such systems in the context of scattering profiles (i.e., transmission and reflection) at the boundaries of a modulated waveguide, rather than the rich dynamics of the non-Hermitian medium itself. In this work, we investigate the wave propagation behavior of a one-dimensional non-Hermitian elastic medium with a universal complex stiffness modulation which encompasses a static term in addition to real and imaginary harmonic variations in both space and time. Using plane wave expansion, we conduct a comprehensive dispersion analysis for a wide set of sub-scenarios to quantify the onset of complex conjugate eigenfrequencies, and set forth the existence conditions for gaps which emerge along the wavenumber space. Upon defining the hierarchy and examining the asymmetry of these wavenumber gaps, we show that both the position with respect to the wavenumber axis and the imaginary component of the oscillatory frequency largely depend on the modulation type and gap order. Finally, we demonstrate the coalescence of multiple Bloch-wave modes at the emergent exceptional points where significant direction-dependent amplification can be realized by triggering specific harmonics through a process which is detailed herein.

Acoustic phased arrays are capable of steering and focusing a beam of sound via selective coordination of the spatial distribution of phase angles between multiple sound emitters. Constrained by the principle of reciprocity, conventional phased arrays exhibit identical transmission and reception patterns which limit the scope of their operation. This work presents a controllable space-time acoustic phased array which breaks time-reversal symmetry, and enables phononic transition in both momentum and energy spaces. By leveraging a dynamic phase modulation, the proposed linear phased array is no longer bound by the acoustic reciprocity, and supports asymmetric transmission and reception patterns that can be tuned independently at multiple channels. A foundational framework is developed to characterize and interpret the emergent nonreciprocal phenomena and is later validated against benchmark numerical experiments. The new phased array selectively alters the directional and frequency content of the incident signal and the frequency conversion between the different wave fields is analyzed as a function of the imposed modulation. The space-time acoustic phased array enables unprecedented control over sound waves in a variety of applications ranging from ultrasonic imaging to non-destructive testing and underwater SONAR telecommunication.
