Layered 2D GO films are integrated with silicon on insulator (SOI) nanowire waveguides to experimentally demonstrate an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity, observed through selfphase modulation (SPM). The GO films are integrated with SOI nanowires using a large area, transfer free, layer by layer coating method that yields precise control of the film thickness. The film placement and coating length are controlled by opening windows in the silica cladding of the SOI nanowires. Owing to the strong mode overlap between the SOI nanowires and the highly nonlinear GO films, the Kerr nonlinearity of the hybrid waveguides is significantly enhanced. Detailed SPM measurements using picosecond optical pulses show significant spectral broadening enhancement for SOI nanowires coated with 2.2 mm long films of 1 to 3 layers of GO, and 0.4 mm long films with 5 to 20 layers of GO. By fitting the experimental results with theory, the dependence of the n2 for GO on layer number and pulse energy is obtained, showing interesting physical insights and trends of the layered GO films from 2D monolayers to quasi bulk like behavior. Finally, we show that by coating SOI nanowires with GO films the effective nonlinear parameter of SOI nanowires is increased 16 times, with the effective nonlinear figure of merit (FOM) increasing by about 20 times to greater than 5. These results reveal the strong potential of using layered GO films to improve the Kerr nonlinear optical performance of silicon photonic devices.

Abstract:
A simple procedure is demonstrated for fabrication of waveplates which can be released from substrate by laser cutting. Oblique angle deposition, chemical etching and laser inscription steps were used for the final lift-off and release of micro-waveplates in HCl solution.

We demonstrate advanced integrated photonic filters in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowires implemented by cascaded Sagnac loop reflector (CSLR) resonators. We investigate mode splitting in these standing-wave (SW) resonators and demonstrate its use for engineering the spectral profile of on-chip photonic filters. By changing the reflectivity of the Sagnac loop reflectors (SLRs) and the phase shifts along the connecting waveguides, we tailor mode splitting in the CSLR resonators to achieve a wide range of filter shapes for diverse applications including enhanced light trap**, flat-top filtering, Q factor enhancement, and signal resha**. We present the theoretical designs and compare the CSLR resonators with three, four, and eight SLRs fabricated in SOI. We achieve versatile filter shapes in the measured transmission spectra via diverse mode splitting that agree well with theory. This work confirms the effectiveness of using CSLR resonators as integrated multi-functional SW filters for flexible spectral engineering.

We demonstrate significantly improved performance of a microwave true time delay line (TTDL) based on an integrated micro-ring resonator (MRR) Kerr optical comb source with a channel spacing of 49GHz, corresponding to 81 channels over the C-band. The broadband microcomb, with a record low free spectral range of 49GHz, results in a large number of comb lines for the TTDL, greatly reducing the size, cost, and complexity of the system. The large channel count results in a high angular resolution and wide beam steering tunable range of the phased array antenna (PAA). The enhancement of PAA performance matches well with theory, corroborating the feasibility of our approach as a competitive solution towards implementing compact low-cost TTDL in radar and communications systems.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate the enhancement in the filtering quality (Q) factor of an integrated micro-ring resonator (MRR) by embedding it in an integrated Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity formed by cascaded Sagnac loop reflectors (SLRs). By utilizing coherent interference within the FP cavity to reshape the transmission spectrum of the MRR, both the Q factor and the extinction ratio (ER) can be significantly improved. The device is theoretically analyzed, and practically fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. Experimental results show that up to 11-times improvement in Q factor, together with an 8-dB increase in ER, can be achieved via our proposed method. The impact of varying structural parameters on the device performance is also investigated and verified by the measured spectra of the fabricated devices with different structural parameters.
