Abstract:
We report the temperature dependent magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ and the superconducting critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ in a 500-nm MgB$_{2}$ film. Our analysis of the experimental results takes into account the two gap nature of the superconducting state and indicates larger intraband diffusivity in the three-dimensional (3D) $π$ band compared to that in the two-dimensional (2D) $σ$ band. Direct comparison of our results with those reported previously for single crystals indicates that larger intraband scattering in the 3D $π$ band leads to an increase of $λ$. We calculated $λ$ and the thermodynamic critical field $H_{c}\approx$2000 Oe employing the gap equations for two-band superconductors. Good agreement between the measured and calculated $λ$ value indicates the two independent measurements, such as magnetic force microscopy and transport, provide a venue for investigating superconducting properties in multi-band superconductors.

We present an experimental approach using magnetic force microscopy for measurements of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth $λ$ in superconductors. $λ$ is obtained in a simple and robust way without introducing any tip modeling procedure via direct comparison of the Meissner response curves for a material of interest to those measured on a reference sample. Using a well-characterized Nb film as a reference, we determine the absolute value of $λ$ in a Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystal and a MgB$_2$ thin film through a comparative experiment. Our apparatus features simultaneous loading of multiple samples, and allows straightforward measurement of the absolute value of $λ$ in superconducting thin film or single crystal samples.

Magnesium diboride (MgB2) thin films are a potential alternative to low-temperature superconductors (LTS) due to a higher critical temperature (Tc) of approximately 39 K. The reactive evaporation deposition technique also affords relatively simple growth of MgB2 films on flexible substrates compared to high-temperature superconductors (HTS). We have designed and fabricated a cable architecture consisting of MgB2 traces on flexible yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) compatible with commercially available connectors or direct wirebonds. Key performance metrics such as critical current density (Jc) and Tc are measured and compared. We discuss thermal conductivity and passivation schemes for these cables.

We report a new in-situ reactive deposition thin film growth technique for the production of MgB2 thin films which offers several advantages over all existing methods and is the first deposition method to enable the production of high-quality MgB2 films for real-world applications. We have used this growth method, which incorporates a rotating pocket heater, to deposit MgB2 films on a variety of substrates, including single-crystalline, polycrystalline, metallic, and semiconductor materials up to 4" in diameter. This technique allows growth of double-sided, large-area films in the intermediate temperature range of 400 to 600 degrees C. These films are clean, well-connected, and consistently display Tc values of 38 to 39 K with low resistivity and residual resistivity values. They are also robust and uncommonly stable upon exposure to atmosphere and water.

Abstract:
The effect of damage induced by 2-MeV alpha particles, followed by annealing, on the critical temperature (Tc), resistivity, and upper critical field (Hc2), of three MgB2 films made by different deposition processes has been studied. Damage creates a linear decrease in Tc with residual resistivity, and produces maxima in both Hc2(0)-perpendicular and Hc2(0)-parallel. Below Tcs of about 25 K, Hc2…

Below Tcs of about 25 K, Hc2(0) depends roughly linearly on Tc, while the anisotropy of Hc2(0) decreases as Tc decreases. Annealing the films reproduces the Tc vs. residual resistivity dependence but not the Hc2(0) values induced by damage.
