We here demonstrate that the superfluid 3He-B under a magnetic field in a particular direction stays topological due to a discrete symmetry, that is, in a symmetry protected topological order. Due to the symmetry protected topological order, helical surface Majorana fermions in the B phase remain gapless and their Ising spin character persists. We unveil that the competition between the Zeeman magnetic field and dipole interaction involves anomalous quantum phase transition where topological phase transition takes place together with spontaneous breaking of symmetry. Based on the quasiclassical theory, we illustrate that the phase transition is accompanied by anisotropic quantum criticality of spin susceptibilities on the surface, which is detectable in NMR experiments.

The gauge field is a three-dimensional analogue of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Upon squashing the SO(3) symmetric gauge field to one- or two-dimensional shapes, we find that the ground state continuously undergoes a change from a three-dimensional to a one- or two-dimensional Skyrmion, which is identified by estimating winding numbers and helicity. All of the emerged Skyrmions are physically understandable with the concept of the helical modulation in a unified way. These topological objects might potentially be realizable in two-component BECs experimentally.

The possible stable singular vortex (SV) and half-quantum vortex (HQV) of the superfluid $^3$He-A phase confined in restricted geometries are investigated. The associated low-energy excitations are calculated in connection with the possible existence of Majorana zero modes obeying non-Abelian statistics. The energetics between those vortices is carefully examined using the standard Ginzburg-Landau (GL) functional with a strong-coupling correction. The Fermi liquid effect, which is not included in the GL functional, is considered approximately within the London approach. This allows us to determine the stability regions in pressure, temperature, and applied field for SV and HQV. The existence of the Majorana zero mode and its statistics, either Abelian or non-Abelian under braiding of SVs, is studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for spinful chiral p-wave superfluids at sufficiently low temperatures. We determined several conditions controllable external parameters for realizing the non-Abelian statistics of Majorana zero modes e.g., pressure, field direction, and strength.

We have solved numerically the ground states of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of dipolar interparticle forces using a semiclassical approach. Our motivation is to model, in particular, the spontaneous spin textures emerging in quantum gases with large dipole moments, such as 52Cr or Dy condensates, or ultracold gases consisting of polar molecules. For a pancake-shaped harmonic (optical) potential, we present the ground state phase diagram spanned by the strength of the nonlinear coupling and dipolar interactions. In an elongated harmonic potential, we observe a novel helical spin texture. The textures calculated according to the semiclassical model in the absence of external polarizing fields are predominantly analogous to previously reported results for a ferromagnetic F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, suggesting that the spin textures arising from the dipolar forces are largely independent of the value of the quantum number F or the origin of the dipolar interactions.

We investigate how the vortex-vortex separation changes Majorana zero modes in the vicinity of the BCS-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) topological phase transition of p-wave resonant Fermi gases. By analytically and numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for spinless p-wave superfluids with plural vortices, it is demonstrated that the quasiparticle tunneling between neighboring vortices gives rise to the quantum oscillation of the low-lying spectra on the scale of the Fermi wavelength in addition to the exponential splitting. This rapid oscillation, which appears in the weak coupling regime as a consequence of quantum oscillations of quasiparticle wave functions, disappears in the vicinity of the BCS-BEC topological phase transition. This is understandable from that the wave function of the Majorana zero modes is described by the modified Bessel function in the strong coupling regime and thus it becomes spread over the vortex core region. Due to the exponential divergence of the modified Bessel function, the concrete realization of the Majorana zero modes near the topological phase transition requires the neighboring vortices to be separated beyond the length scale defined by the coherence length and the dimensionless coupling constant. All these behaviors are also confirmed by carrying out the full numerical diagonalization of the non-local Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation in a two dimensional geometry. Furthermore, this argument is expanded into the case of three-vortex systems, where a pair of core-bound and edge-bound Majorana states survive at zero energy state regardless of the vortex separation.

Multiply quantized vortices in the BCS-to-BEC evolution of p-wave resonant Fermi gases are investigated theoretically. The vortex structure and the low-energy quasiparticle states are discussed, based on the self-consistent calculations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes and gap equations. We reveal the direct relation between the macroscopic structure of vortices, such as particle densities, and the low-lying quasiparticle state. In addition, the net angular momentum for multiply quantized vortices with a vorticity $κ$ is found to be expressed by a simple equation, which reflects the chirality of the Cooper pairing. Hence, the observation of the particle density depletion and the measurement of the angular momentum will provide the information on the core-bound state and $p$-wave superfluidity. Moreover, the details on the zero energy Majorana state are discussed in the vicinity of the BCS-to-BEC evolution. It is demonstrated numerically that the zero energy Majorana state appears in the weak coupling BCS limit only when the vortex winding number is odd. There exist the $κ$ branches of the core bound states for a vortex state with vorticity $κ$, whereas only one of them can be the zero energy. This zero energy state vanishes at the BCS-BEC topological phase transition, because of interference between the core-bound and edge-bound states.

We show that the effective theory of long wavelength low energy behavior of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) with large dipole moments (treated as a classical spin) can be modeled using an extended Non-linear sigma model (NLSM) like energy functional with an additional non-local term that represents long ranged anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction. Minimizing this effective energy functional we calculate the density and spin-profile of the dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the mean-field regime for various trap** geometries. The resulting configurations show strong intertwining between the spin and mass density of the condensate, transfer between spin and orbital angular momentum in the form of Einstein-de Hass effect, and novel topological properties. We have also described the theoretical framework in which the collective excitations around these mean field solutions can be studied and discuss some examples qualitatively.

The spectra of the elementary excitations are calculated for different spin-spin interaction parameters and ratios of the number of particles in each sublevel. There exist dynamical instabilities of the vortex state which are suppressed by ferromagnetic interactions, and conversely, enhanced by antiferromagnetic interactions. In both of the spin-spin interaction regimes, we find vortex splitting instabilities in analogy with scalar BECs. In addition, a phase separating instability is found in the antiferromagnetic regime.

The core structure of multiply quantized vortices is theoretically investigated in fermionic superfluid near Feshbach resonance. Under population imbalance in two hyperfine spin states, the vortex core is filled in by the ``paramagnetic moment''. Here, we find the spatial oscillation of the magnetization inside the core sensitively due to the topological structure of the pairing field, in the range from the weak coupling regime to the unitary limit. This magnetization inside the giant core reveals the winding number of the vortex and directly results from the low-lying quasiparticle states bound inside the core. It is therefore proposed that the density profile experiment using phase contrast imaging can provide the spectroscopy of novel core level structures in giant vortices. To help the understanding on these outcomes, we also derive the analytic solution for the low-lying quasiparticle states inside the core of a multiply quantized vortex.

We theoretically investigate the ground state of trapped neutral fermions with population imbalance in the BCS-BEC crossover regime. On the basis of the single-channel Hamiltonian, we perform full numerical calculations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation coupled with the regularized gap and number equations. The zero-temperature phase diagram in the crossover regime is presented, where the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing state governs the weak-coupling BCS region of a resonance. It is found that the FFLO oscillation vanishes in the BEC side, in which the system under population imbalance turns into a phase separation (PS) between locally binding superfluid and fully polarized spin domains. We also demonstrate numerical calculations with a large particle number O(10^5), comparable to that observed in recent experiments. The resulting density profile on a resonance yields the PS, which is in good agreement with the recent experiments, while the FFLO modulation exists in the pairing field. It is also proposed that the most favorable location for the detection of the FFLO oscillation is in the vicinity of the critical population imbalance in the weak coupling BCS regime, where the oscillation periodicity becomes much larger than the interparticle spacing. Finally, we analyze the radio-frequency (RF) spectroscopy in the imbalanced system. The clear difference in the RF spectroscopy between BCS and BEC sides reveals the structure of the pairing field and local ``magnetization''.

Extended Gross-Pitaevskii equations for the rotating F=2 condensate in a harmonic trap are solved both numerically and variationally using trial functions for each component of the wave function. Axially-symmetric vortex solutions are analyzed and energies of polar and cyclic states are calculated. The equilibrium transitions between different phases with changing of the magnetization are studied. We show that at high magnetization the ground state of the system is determined by interaction in "density" channel, and at low magnetization spin interactions play a dominant role. Although there are five hyperfine states, all the particles are always condensed in one, two or three states. Two novel types of vortex structures are also discussed.

The intersection point of a vortex and nodal plane of the FFLO state empties the excess spins. This leads to observable consequences in the spatial structure of the spontaneous magnetization. We analyze this topological structure based on the low lying excitation spectrum by solving microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation to clarify its physical origin.

We theoretically investigate vortex-lattice phases of rotating spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with the ferromagnetic spin-interaction by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The spinor BEC under slow rotation can sustain a rich variety of exotic vortices due to the multi-component order parameters, such as the Mermin-Ho and Anderson-Toulouse coreless vortices (the 2-dimensional skyrmion and meron) and the non-axisymmetric vortices with the sifting vortex cores. Here, we present the spin texture of various vortex-lattice states at higher rotation rates and in the presence of the external magnetic field. In addition, the vortex phase diagram is constructed in the plane by the total magnetization $M$ and the external rotation frequency $Ω$ by comparing the free energies of possible vortices. It is shown that the vortex phase diagram in a $M$-$Ω$ plane may be divided into two categories; (i) the coreless vortex lattice formed by the several types of Mermin-Ho vortices and (ii) the vortex lattice filling in the cores with the pure polar (antiferromagnetic) state. In particular, it is found that the type-(ii) state forms the composite lattices of coreless and polar-core vortices. The difference between the type-(i) and type-(ii) results from the existence of the singularity of the spin textures, which may be experimentally confirmed by the spin imaging within polarized light recently proposed by Carusotto and Mueller. We also discussed on the stability of triangular and square lattice states for rapidly rotating condensates.

The totally symmetric subset of these modes includes the transverse shear, common longitudinal, and differential longitudinal modes. We also solve the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii (TDGP) equation to simulate the actual JILA experiment, obtaining the Tkachenko mode and identifying a pair of breathing modes. Combining both the BdG and TDGP approaches allows one to unambiguously identify every observed mode.

By numerically solving the full three-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, it is found that the two singly quantized vortices intertwine before decaying. This work provides an interpretation of recent experiments [A. E. Leanhardt et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 190403 (2002)].

We perform an extensive search for stable vortices, considering both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric vortices and covering a wide range of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. The topological defect called Mermin-Ho (Anderson-Toulouse) vortex is shown to be stable for ferromagnetic case. The phase diagram is established in a plane of external rotation Omega vs total magnetization M by comparing the free energies of possible vortices. It is shown that there are qualitative differences between axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric vortices which are manifested in the Omega- and M-dependences.

The Abrikosov lattice with clear core regions are found {\em never stable} at any rotation drive $Ω$. Instead, each component $Ψ_{i}$ $(i=0,\pm 1)$ prefers to shift the core locations from the others to realize almost uniform order-parameter amplitude with complicated magnetic-moment configurations. This system is characterized by many competing metastable structures so that quite a variety of vortices may be realized with a small change in external parameters.

The vortex phase diagram in the external rotation frequency versus temperature is calculated for dilute Bose-Einstein condensed gases. It is determined within the Bogoliubov-Popov theory for a finite temperature where the condensate and non-condensate fractions are treated in an equal footing. The temperature dependences of various thermodynamic instability lines for the vortex nucleation are computed to construct the phase diagram. Experiments are proposed to resolve a recent controversy on the vortex creation problem associated with the quantized vortex observation in $^{87}$Rb atom gases.
