Abstract:
Taylor's law (TL), the scaling relationship between the mean and variance, has been observed in various fields. However, the underlying reasons why TL is so widely observed, why the exponents of TL are often close to 2, and the relationship between temporal and spatial TLs are not fully understood. Taylor's law (TL), the scaling relationship between the mean and variance, has been observed in various fields. However, the underlying reasons why TL is so widely observed, why the exponents of TL are often close to 2, and the relationship between temporal and spatial TLs are not fully understood. Here, using coupled oscillator models, we analytically and numerically demonstrate that synchronization can induce TL. In particular, we show that strong synchronization leads to waveform proportionality, resulting in temporal and spatial TLs with exponent 2. Our study can help infer the existence of synchronization solely from the relationship between the mean and variance.

By using low-dimensional chaos maps, the power law relationship established between the sample mean and variance called Taylor's Law (TL) is studied. In particular, we aim to clarify the relationship between TL from the spatial ensemble (STL) and the temporal ensemble (TTL). Since the spatial ensemble corresponds to independent sampling from a stationary distribution, we confirm that STL is explained by the skewness of the distribution. The difference between TTL and STL is shown to be originated in the temporal correlation of a dynamics. In case of logistic and tent maps, the quadratic relationship in the mean and variance, called Bartlett's law, is found analytically. On the other hand, TTL in the Hassell model can be well explained by the chunk structure of the trajectory, whereas the TTL of the Ricker model have a different mechanism originated from the specific form of the map.

In this paper, we propose a new optimization method for independent low-rank matrix analysis (ILRMA) based on a parametric majorization-equalization algorithm. ILRMA is an efficient blind source separation technique that simultaneously estimates a spatial demixing matrix (spatial model) and the power spectrograms of each estimated source (source model). In ILRMA, since both models are alternately optimized by iterative update rules, the difference in the convergence speeds between these models often results in a poor local solution. To solve this problem, we introduce a new parameter that controls the convergence speed of the source model and find the best balance between the optimizations in the spatial and source models for ILRMA.

In this paper, we generalize a source generative model in a state-of-the-art blind source separation (BSS), independent low-rank matrix analysis (ILRMA). ILRMA is a unified method of frequency-domain independent component analysis and nonnegative matrix factorization and can provide better performance for audio BSS tasks. To further improve the performance and stability of the separation, we introduce an isotropic complex Student's $t$-distribution as a source generative model, which includes the isotropic complex Gaussian distribution used in conventional ILRMA. Experiments are conducted using both music and speech BSS tasks, and the results show the validity of the proposed method.

We have investigated cobaltite relatives of the layered perovskite cuprates and nickelates, Pr$_{2-x}$Ca$_x$CoO$_4$ ($0.39 \leq x \leq 0.73$) and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CoO$_4$ ($x = 0.61$), using elastic neutron scattering. We have discovered do**-dependent incommensurate short-range ordering of charges and magnetic moments, which in cobaltites occur in the range of heavy do**, $ 0.5 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.75$. The charge order exists already at room temperature and shows no change on cooling. The incommensurability of its propagation vector, ${\bf Q}_c = (ε_c,0,l)$, roughly scales with the concentration of Co$^{2+}$ ions, $ε_c \sim (1-x)$. Magnetic order is only established at low T$\lesssim 40$ K and has twice larger periodicity, indicating a dominant antiferromagnetic correlation between the nearest Co$^{2+}$ spins.
