We obtained time-series spectroscopy of the G0 subgiant eta Boo in an attempt to confirm the solar-like oscillations reported by Kjeldsen et al. (1995). We obtained time-series spectroscopy of the G0 subgiant eta Boo in an attempt to confirm the solar-like oscillations reported by Kjeldsen et al. (1995). We recorded 1843 spectra over six consecutive nights with the Nordic Optical Telescope, which we used to measure equivalent widths of strong temperature-sensitive lines. We also measured velocities from 1989 spectra obtained through an iodine reference cell at Lick Observatory over 56 nights that were badly affected by weather. Our analysis also included velocity measurements published by Brown et al. (1997) and the original equivalent-width measurements by Kjeldsen et al. (1995). All four data sets show power excesses consistent with oscillations, although with a range of amplitudes that presumably reflects the stochastic nature of the excitation. The highest peaks show regularity with a large separation of Delta nu = 40.4 microHz and we identify 21 oscillation frequencies from the combined data.

We report observations of the G0 subgiant eta Boo made in 1998, in Balmer-line equivalent width with the 2.5-m Nordic Optical Telescope and in velocity with the 24-inch Lick CAT. In both data sets we see an excess in the power spectrum, with oscillation frequencies that confirm the earlier observations by Kjeldsen et al. (1995).

Clayton and De Marco (1997) gave a detailed description of the available spectroscopic and photometric material. Here we try to re-analyze the photometric record. We present an investigation of the dynamical state of the cluster A262. Existing optical line of sight velocities for select cluster galaxies have been augmented by new data obtained with the Automated Multi-Object Spectrograph at Lick Observatory. We find evidence for a virialized early-type population distinct from a late-type population infalling from the Pisces-Perseus supercluster ridge. We also report on a tertiary population of low luminosity galaxies whose velocity dispersion distinguishes them from both the early and late-type galaxies. We supplement our investigation with an analysis of archival X-ray data. A temperature is determined using ASCA GIS data and a gas profile is derived from ROSAT HRI data. The increased statistics of our sample results in a picture of A262 with significant differences from earlier work. A previously proposed solution to the "beta-problem" in A262 in which the gas temperature is significantly higher than the galaxy temperature is shown to result from using too low a velocity dispersion for the early-type galaxies. Our data present a consistent picture of A262 in which there is no "beta-problem", and the gas and galaxy temperature are roughly comparable. There is no longer any requirement for extensive galaxy-gas feedback to drastically overheat the gas with respect to the galaxies. We also demonstrate that entropy-floor models can explain the recent discovery that the beta values determined by cluster gas and the cluster core radii are correlated.

We present 23 Doppler images of the spotted RS CVn star HR 1099 from 1981 to 1992. HR 1099 shows a large cool polar spot which has persisted for the 11 years of this study and other low-latitude spots which come and go on relatively short timescales. The polar spot has variable protuberances which look very similar to the time-variable vertical extensions of the Sun's polar coronal hole. The area of the polar spot and its extensions shows marginal evidence of being periodically variable in time with a period of ~3 years. On several occasions, isolated prominent spots emerged and then disappeared near the equator. The tracks of two long-lived spots suggest that some spots which emerge at low or intermediate latitudes migrate up to the pole in a clockwise spiral (slower than the orbit), and then apparently merge with the polar spot. Differential rotation as measured from spot movements showed that intermediate and low latitudes rotate slightly slower than the orbital angular velocity, while the pole and highest latitudes appear to be synchronized to the orbit. The differential rotation is of opposite sign and a factor of 50 less than for the Sun. We propose that the starspots on HR 1099 and other rapidly rotating RS CVn stars are, by analogy with solar coronal holes, large unipolar magnetic regions tightly frozen into multi-kilogauss axisymmetric dipole fields in these stars. Since the large cool polar spots, the signature of these dipoles, are not present on more slowly rotating RS CVn stars, we believe that they must be dynamo-induced rather than remnant fossil fields.
