In the present work we have studied collectives of active disks with an energy depot, moving in the two-dimensional plane and interacting via excluded volume. The energy depot accounts for the extraction of energy taking place at the level of each particle in order to perform self-propulsion, included in an underdampled Langevin dynamics. We show that this model undergoes a flocking transition, exhibiting some of the key features of the Vicsek model, namely, band formation and giant number fluctuations. Large density bands disappear as the activity is further increased, eventually reaching a homogeneous polar state. We unravel an effective alignment interaction at the level of two-particle collisions that can be controlled by activity and gives rise to flocking at large scales.

We present a theoretical framework for understanding diffuse multiple scattering (DMS) in single crystals, focusing on diffuse scattering-Bragg (DS-Bragg) channels. These channels, when probed with high-flux, low-divergent monochromatic synchrotron X-rays, provide well-defined visualizations of Kossel lines. Our main contribution lies in modeling the intensity distribution along these lines by considering DS around individual reciprocal lattice nodes. The model incorporates contributions from both general DS and mosaicity, elucidating their connection to second-order scattering events. This comprehensive approach advances our understanding of DMS phenomena, enabling their use as probes for complex material behavior, particularly under extreme conditions.

An optimal protocol for the current-induced switching of a perpendicularly magnetized nanoelement placed on the surface of a topological insulator is presented. The time dependence of both in-plane components of the surface current that induces the magnetization reversal via Dirac spin-orbit torque with minimal Joule heating is derived analytically as a function of the required switching time and material properties. It is demonstrated that a particularly energy-efficient switching is realized for vanishing dam**like torque. The optimal reversal time providing a tradeoff between the switching speed and energy efficiency is derived. The obtained switching protocol is contrasted with the one realized in heavy-metal systems. Topological insulators provide a highly tunable platform for the realization of energy-efficient magnetization switching.

The impact of the local chemical environment on the Gilbert dam** in the binary alloy Fe$_{100-x}$Co$_{x}$ is investigated, using computations based on density functional theory. By varying the alloy composition x as well as Fe/Co atom positions we reveal that the effective dam** of the alloy is highly sensitive to the nearest neighbor environment, especially to the amount of Co and the average distance between Co-Co atoms at nearest neighbor sites. Both lead to a significant local increase (up to an order of magnitude) of the effective Gilbert dam**, originating mainly from variations of the density of states at the Fermi energy. In a global perspective (i.e., making a configuration average for a real material), those differences in dam** are masked by statistical averages. When low-temperature explicit atomistic dynamics simulations are performed, the impact of short-range disorder on local dynamics is observed to also alter the overall relaxation rate. Our results illustrate the possibility of local chemical engineering of the Gilbert dam**, which may stimulate the study of new ways to tune and control materials aiming for spintronics applications.

To develop new devices based on synthetic ferrimagnetic (S-FiM) heterostructures, understanding the material's physical properties is pivotal. Here, the induced magnetic moment (IMM), magnetic exchange-coupling, and spin textures were investigated at room-temperature in Pt/Co/Gd multilayers using a multiscale approach. The magnitude and direction of the IMM were interpreted experimentally and theoretically in the framework of both X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and density functional theory (DFT). The results demonstrate that the IMM transferred by Co across the Gd paramagnetic (PM) thickness leads to a flipped spin state (FSS) within the Gd layers, in which their magnetic moments couple antiparallel/parallel with the ferromagnetic (FM) Co near/far from the Co/Gd interface, respectively. For the Pt, in both Pt/Co and Gd/Pt interfaces the IMM follows the same direction as the Co magnetic moment, with negligible IMM in the Gd/Pt interface. Additionally, zero-field spin spirals were imaged using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM), while micromagnetic simulations employed to unfold the interactions stabilizing the FiM configurations, where the existence of a sizable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is demonstrated to be crucial for the formation of those spin textures. Our outcomes may add fundamental physical and technological aspects for using FiM films in antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

In this paper we introduce a new family of estimators for the parameters of shape and scale of the log-logistic distribution being robust when rank set sample method is used to select the data. Rank set sampling arises as a way to reduce the impact of extremal data. Log-logistic distribution is an important distribution suitable for modeling many different situations ranging from Economy to Engineering and Hydrology. This new family of estimators is based on density power divergences. The choice of this family of divergence measures is motivated by the fact that they have shown a very good behavior in terms of robustness at a reduced cost in efficiency. This new family recovers the classical maximum likelihood estimator as a special case. We have developed the form of these estimators and derived their corresponding asymptotic distribution. A simulation study is carried out, suggesting that these new estimators are very robust when contamination arises and are competitive with classical estimators in terms of efficiency.

The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) and Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equations play an essential role for describing the dynamics of magnetization in solids. While a quantum analog of the LL dynamics has been proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 147201 (2013)], the corresponding quantum version of LLG remains unknown. Here, we propose such a quantum LLG equation that inherently conserves purity of the quantum state. We examine the quantum LLG dynamics of a dimer consisting of two interacting spin-1/2 particles. Our analysis reveals that, in the case of ferromagnetic coupling, the evolution of initially uncorrelated spins mirrors the classical LLG dynamics. However, in the antiferromagnetic scenario, we observe pronounced deviations from classical behavior, underscoring the unique dynamics of becoming a spinless state, which is non-locally correlated. Moreover, when considering spins that are initially correlated, our study uncovers an unusual form of transient quantum correlation dynamics, which differ significantly from what is typically seen in open quantum systems.

Despite extensive research on magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions, a significant challenge remains in crafting nontrivial high-order skyrmionic textures with varying, or even tailor-made, topologies. We address this challenge, by focusing on a construction pathway of skyrmionics metamaterial within a monolayer thin film and suggest several promising lattice-like, flakes-like, and cell-like skyrmionic metamaterials that are surprisingly stable. Central to our approach is the concept of 'simulated controlled assembly', in short, a protocol inspired by 'click chemistry' that allows for positioning topological magnetic structures where one likes, and then allowing for energy minimization to elucidate the stability. Utilizing high-throughput atomistic-spin-dynamic (ASD) simulations alongside state-of-the-art AI-driven tools, we have isolated skyrmions (topological charge Q=1), antiskyrmions (Q=-1), and skyrmionium (Q=0). These entities serve as foundational 'skyrmionic building blocks' to forming reported intricate textures. In this work, two key contributions are introduced to the field of skyrmionic systems. First, we present a novel method for integrating control assembly protocols for the stabilization and investigation of topological magnets, which marks a significant advancement in the ability to explore new skyrmionic textures. Second, we report on the discovery of skyrmionic metamaterials, which shows a plethora of complex topologies that are possible to investigate theoretically and experimentally.

Perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy combined with $ab-initio$ electronic structure calculations is used to unravel the structural phase transition path from the low-temperature polar structure to the high-temperature structural phase in $Ca_3Ti_2O_7$, a hybrid improper ferroelectric. This procedure explores the unique features of a local probe environment approach by monitoring the evolution of the electric field gradient tensor at the calcium sites. The local environments, observed above 1057 K, confirm a structural phase transition from the $A2_1am$ symmetry to an orthorhombic $Acaa$ symmetry in the $Ca_3Ti_2O_7$ crystal lattice, disagreeing with the frequently reported avalanche structural transition from the polar $A2_1am$ phase to the aristotype $I4/mmm$ phase. Moreover, the EFG temperature dependency, within the $A2_1am$ temperature stability, is shown to be sensitive to the recently proposed $Ca_3Ti_2O_7$ ferroelectric polarization decrease within the 500-800~K temperature range.

This study investigates the usage patterns and purposes of designer perfumes among Filipino consumers, employing purposive and snowball sampling methods as non-probability sampling techniques. Data was collected using Google Forms, and the majority of respondents purchased full bottles of designer perfumes from retailers, wholesalers, and physical stores, with occasional "blind purchases." Daily usage was common, with respondents applying an average of 5.88 sprays in the morning, favoring fresh scent notes and Eau De Parfum concentration. They tended to alternate perfumes daily, selecting different scent profiles according to the Philippine climate. The study reveals that Filipino respondents primarily use designer perfumes to achieve a pleasant and fresh fragrance. Additionally, these perfumes play a role in boosting self-esteem, elevating mood, and enhancing personal presentation. Some respondents reported fewer common applications, such as using perfume to address insomnia and migraines. Overall, the research highlights the significant role of perfume in the grooming routine of Filipino consumers. This study represents the first attempt to comprehend perfume usage patterns and purposes specifically within the Filipino context. Consequently, its findings are invaluable for manufacturers and marketers targeting the Filipino market, providing insights into consumer preferences and motivations.

Politicization is a social phenomenon studied by political science characterized by the extent to which ideas and facts are given a political tone. A range of topics, such as climate change, religion and vaccines has been subject to increasing politicization in the media and social media platforms. In this work, we propose a computational method for assessing politicization in online conversations based on topic shifts, i.e., the degree to which people switch topics in online conversations. The intuition is that topic shifts from a non-political topic to politics are a direct measure of politicization -- making something political, and that the more people switch conversations to politics, the more they perceive politics as playing a vital role in their daily lives. A fundamental challenge that must be addressed when one studies politicization in social media is that, a priori, any topic may be politicized. Hence, any keyword-based method or even machine learning approaches that rely on topic labels to classify topics are expensive to run and potentially ineffective. Instead, we learn from a seed of political keywords and use Positive-Unlabeled (PU) Learning to detect political comments in reaction to non-political news articles posted on Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok during the 2022 Brazilian presidential elections. Our findings indicate that all platforms show evidence of politicization as discussion around topics adjacent to politics such as economy, crime and drugs tend to shift to politics. Even the least politicized topics had the rate in which their topics shift to politics increased in the lead up to the elections and after other political events in Brazil -- an evidence of politicization.

Robust inferential methods based on divergences measures have shown an appealing trade-off between efficiency and robustness in many different statistical models. In this paper, minimum density power divergence estimators (MDPDEs) for the scale and shape parameters of the log-logistic distribution are considered. The log-logistic is a versatile distribution modeling lifetime data which is commonly adopted in survival analysis and reliability engineering studies when the hazard rate is initially increasing but then it decreases after some point. Further, it is shown that the classical estimators based on maximum likelihood (MLE) are included as a particular case of the MDPDE family. Moreover, the corresponding influence function of the MDPDE is obtained, and its boundlessness is proved, thus leading to robust estimators. A simulation study is carried out to illustrate the slight loss in efficiency of MDPDE with respect to MLE and, at besides, the considerable gain in robustness.

The extended plane wave expansion (EPWE) formulation is derived to obtain the complex band structure of flexural waves in viscoelastic thin phononic crystal plates considering the Kirchhoff-Love plate theory. The presented formulation yields the evanescent behavior of flexural waves in periodic thin plates considering viscoelastic effects. The viscosity is modeled by the standard linear solid model (SLSM), typically used to closely model the behavior of polymers. It is observed that the viscoelasticity influences significantly both the propagating and evanescent Bloch modes. The highest wave attenuation of the viscoelastic phononic thin plate is found around a unit cell filling fraction of 0.37 for higher frequencies considering the least attenuated wave mode. This EPWE formulation broadens the suitable methods to handle evanescent flexural waves in 2-D thin periodic plate systems considering the effects of viscoelasticity on wave attenuation.

Orbiting a late G-type star, TOI-199\,b has a $\mathrm{104.854_{-0.002}^{+0.001} \, d}$ period, a mass of $\mathrm{0.17\pm0.02 \, M_J}$, and a radius of $\mathrm{0.810\pm0.005 \, R_J}$. It is the first warm exo-Saturn with a precisely determined mass and radius. The TESS and ASTEP transits show strong transit timing variations, pointing to the existence of a second planet in the system. The joint analysis of the RVs and TTVs provides a unique solution for the non-transiting companion TOI-199 c, which has a period of $\mathrm{273.69_{-0.22}^{+0.26} \, d}$ and an estimated mass of $\mathrm{0.28_{-0.01}^{+0.02} \, M_J}$. It is shown that this type of Langevin-based simulation is able to reproduce observed trends of the ultrafast magnetization dynamics of fcc Co and bcc Fe, in agreement with previous findings for fcc Ni. The simulations are performed by using parameters that to as large extent as possible are obtained from electronic structure theory. The one parameter that was not calculated in this way, was the dam** term used for the lattice dynamics simulations, and here a range of parameters were investigated. It is found that this term has a large influence on the details of the magnetization dynamics. The dynamics of iron and cobalt is compared with previous results for nickel and similarities and differences in the materials' behavior are analysed following the absorption of a femtosecond laser pulse. Importantly, for all elements investigated so far with this model, we obtain a linear relationship between the value of the maximally demagnetized state and the fluence of the laser pulse, which is in agreement with experiments.

Model selection criteria are rules used to select the best statistical model among a set of candidate models, striking a trade-off between goodness of fit and model complexity. Most popular model selection criteria measure the goodness of fit trough the model log-likelihood function, yielding to non-robust criteria. This paper presents a new family of robust model selection criteria for independent but not identically distributed observations (i.n.i.d.o.) based on the Rényi's pseudodistance (RP). The RP-based model selection criterion is indexed with a tuning parameter $α$ controlling the trade-off between efficiency and robustness. Some theoretical results about the RP criterion are derived and the theory is applied to the multiple linear regression model, obtaining explicit expressions of the model selection criterion. Moreover, restricted models are considered and explicit expressions under the multiple linear regression model with nested models are accordingly derived. Finally, a simulation study empirically illustrates the robustness advantage of the method.

This result extends to a first order discrete differential operator the known convergence of discrete Schrödinger operators to their continuous counterpart. To be able to define such a discrete analog, we start by defining an alternative framework for a higher-dimensional discrete differential calculus. We believe that this framework, that generalize the standard one defined on simplicial complexes, could be of independent interest. We then express our operator as a differential operator acting on discrete forms to finally be able to show the limit to the continuous Dirac-Hodge operator.

To demonstrate how this method works, we identify and analyze spin textures with topological charge $Q$ ranging from 1 to $-13$ (where antiskyrmions have $Q<0$) in the Pd/Fe/Ir(111) system, which we model using a classical atomistic spin Hamiltonian based on parameters computed from density functional theory. To facilitate the harvest of relevant spin textures, we make use of the newly developed Segment Anything Model (SAM). Spin textures with $Q$ ranging from $-3$ to $-6$ are further analyzed using finite-temperature spin-dynamics simulations. We observe that for temperatures up to around 20\,K, lifetimes longer than 200\,ps are predicted, and that when these textures decay, new topological spin textures are formed. We also find that the relative stability of the spin textures depend linearly on the topological charge, but only when comparing the most stable antiskyrmions for each topological charge. In general, the number of holes (i.e., non-self-intersecting curves that define closed domain walls in the structure) in the spin texture is an important predictor of stability -- the more holes, the less stable is the texture. Methods for systematic identification and characterization of complex metastable skyrmionic textures -- such as the one demonstrated here -- are highly relevant for advancements in the field of topological spintronics.

Zhang (2019) presented a general estimation approach based on the Gaussian distribution for general parametric models where the likelihood of the data is difficult to obtain or unknown, but the mean and variance-covariance matrix are known. Castilla and Zografos (2021) extended the method to density power divergence-based estimators, which are more robust than the likelihood-based Gaussian estimator against data contamination. In this paper we introduce the restricted minimum density power divergence Gaussian estimator (MDPDGE) and study its main asymptotic properties. Also, we examine it robustness through its influence function analysis. Restricted estimators are required in many practical situations, in special in testing composite null hypothesis, and provide here constrained estimators to inherent restrictions of the underlying distribution. Further, we derive robust Rao-type test statistics based on the MDPDGE for testing simple null hypothesis and we deduce explicit expressions for some main important distributions. Finally, we empirically evaluate the efficiency and robustness of the method through a simulation study.

We study the influence of non-local dam** on magnon properties of Fe, Co, Ni and Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$ ($x=30\%,50\%$) alloys. The Gilbert dam** parameter is typically considered as a local scalar both in experiment and in theoretical modelling. However, recent works have revealed that Gilbert dam** is a non-local quantity that allows for energy dissipation between atomic sites. With the Gilbert dam** parameters calculated from a state-of-the-art real-space electronic structure method, magnon lifetimes are evaluated from spin dynamics and linear response, where a good agreement is found between these two methods. It is found that non-local dam** affects the magnon lifetimes in different ways depending on the system. Specifically, we find that in Fe, Co, and Ni the non-local dam** decreases the magnon lifetimes, while in $\rm Fe_{70}Co_{30}$ and Fe$_{50}$Co$_{50}$ an opposite, non-local dam** effect is observed, and our data show that it is much stronger in the former.

The fire and crime incident datasets were requested and collected from two Philippine regional agencies (i.e., the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Philippine National Police). The datasets were used to initially analyze and map both fire and crime incidents within the province of Pampanga for a specific time frame. Several data preparation, normalization, and data cleaning steps were implemented to properly map and identify patterns within the datasets. The initial results also indicate the leading causes of fire and crimes are rubbish and acts against property. Fires mostly occur during the dry season in the province. Crime is particularly high during December, and most of the fire and crime incidents occur during the time when people are most active. The dataset was able to present the temporal characteristics of the fire and crime incidents that occurred in the province of Pampanga. Merge the existing dataset with the other datasets from other related agencies to get a bigger picture and produce more objective results that could be used for decision-making.

Phononic crystals (PCs) are periodic structures obtained by the spatial arrangement of materials with contrasting properties, which can be designed to efficiently manipulate mechanical waves. Plate structures can be modeled using the Mindlin-Reissner plate theory and have been extensively used to analyze the dispersion relations of PCs. Although the analysis of the propagating characteristics of PCs may be sufficient for simple elastic structures, analyzing the evanescent wave behavior becomes fundamental if the PC contains viscoelastic components. Another complication is that increasingly intricate material distributions in the unit cell of PCs with hierarchical configuration may render the calculation of the complex band structure (i.e., considering both propagating and evanescent waves) prohibitive due to excessive computational workload. In this work, we propose a new extended plane wave expansion formulation to compute the complex band structure of thick PC plates with arbitrary material distribution using the Mindlin-Reissner plate theory containing constituents with a viscoelastic behavior approximated by a Kelvin-Voigt model. We apply the method to investigate the evanescent behavior of periodic hierarchically structured plates for either (i) a hard purely elastic matrix with soft viscoelastic inclusions or (ii) a soft viscoelastic matrix with hard purely elastic inclusions. Our results show that for (i), an increase in the hierarchical order leads to a weight reduction with relatively preserved attenuation characteristics, including attenuation peaks due to locally resonant modes that present a decrease in attenuation upon increasing viscosity levels. For (ii), changing the hierarchical order implies in opening band gaps in distinct frequency ranges, with an overall attenuation improved by an increase in the viscosity levels.

In this article, we provide the spectral analysis of a Dirac-type operator on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ by describing the behavior of the spectral shift function associated with a sign-definite trace-class perturbation by a multiplication operator. We prove that it remains bounded outside a single threshold and obtain its main asymptotic term in the unbounded case. Interestingly, we show that the constant in the main asymptotic term encodes the interaction between a flat band and whole non-constant bands. The strategy used is the reduction of the spectral shift function to the eigenvalue counting function of some compact operator which can be studied as a toroidal pseudo-differential operator.

The study implemented mixed-methodology to properly identify the various stakeholders' considerations in develo** the application. Interviews with key informants were conducted to ensure that the features were appropriate for the intended user needs, and selected ISO standards were used as evaluation criteria. The results indicate that the mobile application with marker-less AR technology was found to be highly acceptable by three evaluators (i.e., customers, owners, and IT experts). The study also highlighted the use of AR-related technology in this case, where marker-less has the potential to improve customer purchasing experience even further. Future studies may include using newer technologies to further improve the application. The study suggests that Augmented Reality technology could be used to connect specific businesses directly to consumers regardless of setting or context.

We study the distribution of resonances for discrete Hamiltonians of the form $H_0+V$ near the thresholds of the spectrum of $H_0$. Here, the unperturbed operator $H_0$ is a multichannel Laplace type operator on $\ell^2(\mathbb Z; \mathfrak{G}) \cong \ell^2(\mathbb Z)\otimes \mathfrak{G}$ where ${\mathfrak G}$ is an abstract separable Hilbert space, and $V$ is a suitable non-selfadjoint compact perturbation. We distinguish two cases. If ${\mathfrak G}$ is of finite dimension, we prove that resonances exist and do not accumulate at the thresholds in the spectrum of $H_0$. Furthermore, we compute exactly their number and give a precise description on their location in clusters in the complex plane. If ${\mathfrak G}$ is of infinite dimension, an accumulation phenomenon occurs at some thresholds. We describe it by means of an asymptotical analysis of the counting function of resonances. Consequences on the distribution of the complex and the embedded eigenvalues are also given.

Structurally similar transition metal systems can have widely differing magnetic properties. A prime example of this is found for bilayers on Ir(111), where Pd/Fe/Ir(111) ground state has a well-established noncollinear spin texture, while Pd/Co/Ir(111) present a ferromagnetic (FM) single-domain. To unravel the origins of these different magnetic behaviors, an investigation of Pd/Fe and Pd/Co bilayers on Ir(111), is here performed. Based on the obtained \textit{ab-initio} electronic structure, exchange coupling parameters ($J_{ij}$) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI), we demonstrate that, although in Pd/Co/Ir(111) the DMI is significant, two ingredients play a key role on the origin of noncollinearity in Pd/Fe/Ir(111): the presence of magnetic frustrations and a much more in-plane DMI, both with a long-range influence. The $J_{ij}$ and DMI behaviors in both systems can be explained in terms of a simple rigid-band-like model. Also, by performing spin-dynamics simulations with the magnetic parameters tuned from the Pd/Co/Ir(111) to Pd/Fe/Ir(111) \textit{ab-initio} values, we could find conditions for the emergence of skyrmionic phases in the originally FM Pd/Co/Ir(111).

In this paper we apply divergence measures to empirical likelihood applied to logistic regression models. We define a family of empirical test statistics based on divergence measures, called empirical phi-divergence test statistics, extending the empirical likelihood ratio test. We study the asymptotic distribution of these empirical test statistics, showing that it is the same for all the test statistics in this family, and the same as the classical empirical likelihood ratio test. Next, we study the power function for the members in this family, showing that the empirical phi-divergence tests introduced in the paper are consistent in the Fraser sense. In order to compare the differences in behavior among the empirical phi-divergence test statistics in this new family, considered for the first time in this paper, we carry out a simulation study.

Data preparation such as data cleaning, transformation, tokenization, removal of stop words from both English and Filipino, and word stemming was employed in the dataset before feeding it to sentiment analysis and the LDA model. The topmost occurring word within the dataset is "development" and there are three (3) likely topics from the speeches of Philippine presidents: economic development, enhancement of public services, and addressing challenges. The dataset was able to provide valuable insights contained among official documents. While the study showed that presidents have used their annual address to express their visions for the country. It also presented that the presidents from 1935 to 2016 faced the same problems during their term. Future researchers may collect other speeches made by presidents during their term; combine them to the dataset used in this study to further investigate these important texts by subjecting them to the same methodology used in this study. The dataset may be requested from the authors and it is recommended for further analysis. For example, determine how the speeches of the president reflect the preamble or foundations of the Philippine constitution.

The experiment consists of an air shower (AS) array with a surface of $83, 000\, {\rm m}^2$ and an underground water Cherenkov muon detector (MD) array covering $5, 400\, {\rm m}^2$. The experimental site is at the Mt. Chacaltaya plateau in La Paz, Bolivia, with an altitude of $4, 740\, {\rm m}$ corresponding to $572\, {\rm g}/{\rm cm}^2$ atmospheric thickness. As the prototype experiment of ALPACA, the ALPAQUITA experiment aims to begin data acquisition in late 2021. The ALPAQUITA array consists of a smaller AS array ($18, 450\, {\rm m}^2$) and underground MD ($900\, {\rm m}^2$), which are now under construction. ALPAQUITA's sensitivity to gamma-ray sources is evaluated with Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation finds that five gamma-ray sources observed by H.E.S.S. and HAWC experiments will be detected by ALPAQUITA beyond 10 TeV and one out of these five - HESS J1702-420A - above 300 TeV in one calendar year observation. The latter finding means that scientific discussions can be made on the emission mechanism of gamma rays beyond 100 TeV from southern sources on the basis of the observational results of this prototype experiment.

The lowest-energy states are predicted to be spin-spirals but with a minute (of the order of a few $μ$eV/atom) energy difference with skyrmionic states. The spontaneous low temperature skyrmions, with $\sim15$ nm to $\sim35$ nm size, arise from a large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) and Heisenberg exchange interactions ratio and, in particular, from a large in-plane DM vector component for nearest neighbors. The skyrmions become larger and more dispersed with the enhancement of the Ir buffer thickness. Also, with increasing $n$, the skyrmions stability decrease when an external magnetic field is applied or the temperature is raised. For $n=0$ and $n=1$, we found that metastable skyrmioniums can occur, which are characterized by a slightly lower stability with respect to the external fields and larger critical currents, compared to skyrmions.

Cu$_2$ZnSnS$_4$ is an earth-abundant photovoltaic absorber material predicted to provide a sustainable solution for commercial solar applications. One of the main limitations restricting its commercialization is the issue of cation disorder. Raman spectroscopy has been a sought after technique to characterize disorder in CZTS while a clear consensus between theoretical and experimental results is yet to be achieved. In the present study, via the virtual crystal approximation, we take into account the progressive nature of Cu-Zn disorder in CZTS: we obtain the phonon frequencies at zone-center within the density functional perturbation theory formalism, and further compute the Raman spectra for the disordered phases, achieving a consensus between theory and experiment. These calculations confirm the presence of complete disorder in Cu-Zn 2$a$, 2$c$ and 2$d$ Wyckoff sites. They also show that the Raman intensities of two prominent $A$ phonon modes characterized by motion of S atoms, also known to be experimentally significant, play a key role in understanding the nature of disorder in CZTS.

The anisotropy of the Gilbert dam** with respect to the magnetic moment direction and local chemical environment is calculated for bulk and surfaces of Fe$_{50}$Co$_{50}$ alloys from first principles electronic structure in a real space formulation. The size of the dam** anisotropy for Fe$_{50}$Co$_{50}$ alloys is demonstrated to be significant. Depending on details of the simulations, it reaches a maximum-minimum dam** ratio as high as 200%. Several microscopic origins of the strongly enhanced Gilbert dam** anisotropy have been examined, where in particular interface/surface effects stand out, as do local distortions of the crystal structure. Although theory does not reproduce the experimentally reported high ratio of 400% [Phys. Rev. Here, through the analysis of a high-throughput database of phonon band structures, we identify a new structural family of anti-Ruddlesden-Popper phases A$_4$X$_2$O (A=Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu, X=Sb, P, As, Bi) showing ferroelectric and anti-ferroelectric behaviors. The discovered ferroelectrics belong to the new class of hyperferroelectrics which polarize even under open-circuit boundary conditions. The polar distortion involves the movement of O anions against apical A cations and is driven by geometric effects resulting from internal chemical strains. Within this new structural family, we show that Eu$_4$Sb$_2$O combines coupled ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order at the same atomic site, a very rare occurrence in materials physics.

We describe a new approach to compute the electron-phonon self-energy and carrier mobilities in semiconductors. Our implementation does not require a localized basis set to interpolate the electron-phonon matrix elements, with the advantage that computations can be easily automated. Scattering potentials are interpolated on dense $\mathbf{q}$ meshes using Fourier transforms and ab initio models to describe the long-range potentials generated by dipoles and quadrupoles. To reduce significantly the computational cost, we take advantage of crystal symmetries and employ the linear tetrahedron method and double-grid integration schemes, in conjunction with filtering techniques in the Brillouin zone. We report results for the electron mobility in Si, GaAs, and GaP obtained with this new methodology.

We present a transient absorption setup combining broadband detection over the visible-UV range with high temporal resolution ($\sim$20fs) which is ideally suited to trigger and detect vibrational coherences in different classes of materials. We generate and detect coherent phonons (CPs) in single layer (1L) MoS$_2$, as a representative semiconducting 1L-transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), where the confined dynamical interaction between excitons and phonons is unexplored. The coherent oscillatory motion of the out-of-plane $A'_{1}$ phonons, triggered by the ultrashort laser pulses, dynamically modulates the excitonic resonances on a timescale of few tens fs. We observe an enhancement by almost two orders of magnitude of the CP amplitude when detected in resonance with the C exciton peak, combined with a resonant enhancement of CP generation efficiency. Ab initio calculations of the change in 1L-MoS$_2$ band structure induced by the $A'_{1}$ phonon displacement confirm a strong coupling with the C exciton. The resonant behavior of the CP amplitude follows the same spectral profile of the calculated Raman susceptibility tensor. This demonstrates that CP excitation in 1L-MoS$_2$ can be described as a Raman-like scattering process. These results explain the CP generation process in 1L-TMDs, paving the way for coherent all-optical control of excitons in layered materials in the THz frequency range.

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in a three-dimensional waveguide that is a small deformation of a periodically twisted tube. The deformation is given by a bending and an additional twisting of the tube, both parametrized by a coupling constant $δ$. We expand the resolvent of the perturbed operator near the bottom of its essential spectrum and we show the existence of exactly one resonance, in the asymptotic regime of $δ$ small. We are able to perform the asymptotic expansion of the resonance in $δ$, which in particular permits us to give a quantitative geometric criterion for the existence of a discrete eigenvalue below the essential spectrum. In the particular case of perturbations of straight tubes, we are able to show the existence of resonances not only near the bottom of the essential spectrum but near each threshold in the spectrum. We also obtain the asymptotic behavior of the resonances in this situation, which is generically different from the first case.

It is well-known that biological phenomena are emergent. Emergent phenomena are quite interesting and amazing. However, they are difficult to be understood. Due to this difficulty, we propose a theory to describe emergence based on a powerful mathematical tool, namely, Theory of Categories. In order to do this, we first utilize constructs (categories whose objects are structured sets), their operations and their corresponding generalized underlying functor (which are not necessary faithful) to characterize emergence. After this, we introduce and show several results concerning homomorphism (isomorphism) between emergences, representability, pullback, pushout, equalizer, product and co-product of emergences among other concepts. Finally, we explain how our theory fits in studies involving biological systems.

We present an \textit{ab initio} method to calculate phonon-assisted absorption and emission spectra in the presence of strong excitonic effects. We apply the method to bulk hexagonal BN which has an indirect band gap and is known for its strong luminescence in the UV range. We first analyse the excitons at the wave vector $\overline{q}$ of the indirect gap. The coupling of these excitons with the various phonon modes at $\overline{q}$ is expressed in terms of a product of the mean square displacement of the atoms and the second derivative of the optical response function with respect to atomic displacement along the phonon eigenvectors. The derivatives are calculated numerically with a finite difference scheme in a supercell commensurate with $\overline{q}$. We use detailed balance arguments to obtain the intensity ratio between emission and absorption processes. Our results explain recent luminescence experiments and reveal the exciton-phonon coupling channels responsible for the emission lines.

In this note we consider the Iwatsuka model with a postive increasing magnetic field having finite limits. The associated magnetic Laplacian is fibred through partial Fourier transform, and, for large frequencies, the band functions tend to the Landau levels, which are thresholds in the spectrum. The asymptotics of the band functions is already known when the magnetic field converge polynomially to its limits. We complete this analysis by giving the asymptotics for a regular magnetic field which is constant at infinity, showing that the band functions converge now exponentially fast toward the thresholds. As an application, we give a control on the current of quantum states localized in energy near a threshold.

Accurately described excitonic properties of transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers (HBLs) are crucial to comprehend the optical response and the charge carrier dynamics of them. Excitons in multilayer systems posses inter or intralayer character whose spectral positions depend on their binding energy and the band alignment of the constituent single-layers. In this study, we report the electronic structure and the absorption spectra of MoS$_2$/WS$_2$ and MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ HBLs from first-principles calculations. We explore the spectral positions, binding energies and the origins of inter and intralayer excitons and compare our results with experimental observations. The absorption spectra of the systems are obtained by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation on top of a G$_0$W$_0$ calculation which corrects the independent particle eigenvalues obtained from density functional theory calculations. Our calculations reveal that the lowest energy exciton in both HBLs possesses interlayer character which is decisive regarding their possible device applications. Due to the spatially separated nature of the charge carriers, the binding energy of inter-layer excitons might be expected to be considerably smaller than that of intra-layer ones. However, according to our calculations the binding energy of lowest energy interlayer excitons is only $\sim$ 20\% lower due to the weaker screening of the Coulomb interaction between layers of the HBLs. Therefore, it can be deduced that the spectral positions of the interlayer excitons with respect to intralayer ones are mostly determined by the band offset of the constituent single-layers. By comparing oscillator strengths and thermal occupation factors, we show that in luminescence at low temperature, the interlayer exciton peak becomes dominant, while in absorption it is almost invisible.

Superpixel segmentation has become an important research problem in image processing. In this paper, we propose an Iterative Spanning Forest (ISF) framework, based on sequences of Image Foresting Transforms, where one can choose i) a seed sampling strategy, ii) a connectivity function, iii) an adjacency relation, and iv) a seed pixel recomputation procedure to generate improved sets of connected superpixels (supervoxels in 3D) per iteration. The superpixels in ISF structurally correspond to spanning trees rooted at those seeds. We present five ISF methods to illustrate different choices of its components. These methods are compared with approaches from the state-of-the-art in effectiveness and efficiency. The experiments involve 2D and 3D datasets with distinct characteristics, and a high level application, named sky image segmentation. The theoretical properties of ISF are demonstrated in the supplementary material and the results show that some of its methods are competitive with or superior to the best baselines in effectiveness and efficiency.

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in a straight three dimensional waveguide with non-rotationally invariant cross section, perturbed by a twisting of small amplitude. It is well known that such a perturbation does not create eigenvalues below the essential spectrum. However, around the bottom of the spectrum, we provide a meromorphic extension of the weighted resolvent of the perturbed operator, and show the existence of exactly one resonance near this point. Moreover, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of this resonance as the size of the twisting goes to 0. We also extend the analysis to the upper eigenvalues of the transversal problem, showing that the number of resonances is bounded by the multiplicity of the eigenvalue and obtaining the corresponding asymptotic behavior

In this paper, we develop a natural (empirical) relational theory for describing and modeling complex biological phenomena. We have as step** stone the assertion: function implies structure. The theory is built upon a graph's theory structure in which a diffusion model of information takes place, and where dynamics can be investigated in order to generate steady quantifiers. In this context, we improve a seminal work by adding a free context biological importance measure given by the Shannon's Entropy. We also introduce the concept of biological loci. Such concept stands for closely related biological agents which plays a role as an agent by itself. Our results allow us to synthesize a natural model for complex biological behavior that takes into account: system's update, irreducibility, and exploit of the dynamical behavior mounted over a diffusion model. The model deals in final terms to its natural capacity to model plasticity and environmental changes, which has an intrinsic relationship with Shannon's Entropy and the sort of dynamics that biological systems can display.
