The homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformation is part of a larger web of integrable deformations and dualities that recently have been studied with motivations in integrable $σ$-models, solution-generating techniques in supergravity and Double Field Theory, and possible generalisations of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The $σ$-models obtained by the homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformation with periodic boundary conditions on the worldsheet are on-shell equivalent to undeformed models, yet with twisted boundary conditions. While this has been known for some time, the expression provided so far for the twist features non-localities (in terms of the degrees of freedom of the deformed model) that prevent practical calculations, and in particular the construction of the classical spectral curve. We solve this problem by rewriting the equation defining the twist in terms of the degrees of freedom of the undeformed yet twisted model, and we show that we are able to solve it in full generality. Remarkably, this solution is a local expression. We discuss the consequences of the twist at the level of the monodromy matrix and of the classical spectral curve, analysing in particular the concrete examples of abelian, almost abelian and Jordanian deformations of the Yang-Baxter class.

The analogues of giant magnon configurations are studied on the string world sheet in the lambda background. This is a discrete deformation of the AdS(5)xS(5) background that preserves the integrability of the world sheet theory. Giant magnon solutions are generated using the dressing method and their dispersion relation is found. This reduces to the usual dyonic giant magnon dispersion relation in the appropriate limit and becomes relativistic in another limit where the lambda model becomes the generalized sine-Gordon theory of the Pohlmeyer reduction. The scattering of giant magnons is then shown in the semi-classical limit to be described by the quantum S-matrix that is a quantum group deformation of the conventional giant magnon S-matrix. It is further shown that in the small g limit, a sector of the S-matrix is related to the XXZ spin chain whose spectrum matches the spectrum of magnon bound states.

Recently, several kinds of integrable deformations of the string world sheet theory in the gauge/gravity correspondence have been constructed. One class of these, the k deformations associated to the more general q deformations but with q=exp(i pi/k) a root of unity, has been shown to be related to a particular discrete deformation of the principal chiral models and (semi-)symmetric space sigma models involving a gauged WZW model. We conjecture a form for the exact S-matrices of the bosonic integrable field theories of this type. The S-matrices imply that the theories have a hidden infinite dimensional affine quantum group symmetry. We provide some evidence, via quantum inverse scattering techniques, that the theories do indeed possess the finite-dimensional part of this quantum group symmetry.

The S-matrix on the world-sheet theory of the string in AdS5 x S5 has previously been shown to admit a deformation where the symmetry algebra is replaced by the associated quantum group. The case where q is real has been identified as a particular deformation of the Green-Schwarz sigma model. An interpretation of the case with q a root of unity has, until now, been lacking. We show that the Green-Schwarz sigma model admits a discrete deformation which can be viewed as a rather simple deformation of the F/F_V gauged WZW model, where F=PSU(2,2|4). The deformation parameter q is then a k-th root of unity where k is the level. The deformed theory has the same equations-of-motion as the Green-Schwarz sigma model but has a different symplectic structure. We show that the resulting theory is integrable and has just the right amount of kappa-symmetries that appear as a remnant of the fermionic part of the original gauge symmetry. This points to the existence of a fully consistent deformed string background.

A general class of deformations of integrable sigma-models with symmetric space F/G target-spaces are found. These deformations involve defining the non-abelian T dual of the sigma-model and then replacing the coupling of the Lagrange multiplier imposing flatness with a gauged F/F WZW model. The original sigma-model is obtained in the limit of large level. The resulting deformed theories are shown to preserve both integrability and the equations-of-motion, but involve a deformation of the symplectic structure. It is shown that this deformed symplectic structure involves a linear combination of the original Poisson bracket and a generalization of the Faddeev-Reshetikhin Poisson bracket which we show can be re-expressed as two decoupled F current algebras. It is then shown that the deformation can be incorporated into the classical model of strings on R x F/G via a generalization of the Pohlmeyer reduction. In this case, in the limit of large sigma-model coupling it is shown that the theory becomes the relativistic symmetric space sine-Gordon theory. These results point to the existence of a deformation of this kind for the full Green-Schwarz superstring on AdS5 x S5.

Relativistic integrable field theories like the sine-Gordon equation have an infinite set of conserved charges. In a light-front formalism these conserved charges are closely related to the integrable modified KdV hierarchy at the classical level. The latter hierarchy admits a family of symplectic structures which we argue can be viewed as deformations of the relativistic sine-Gordon symplectic structure. These deformed theories are integrable but no longer relativistic and the basic excitations of the theory, the solitons, have an interesting non-relativistic dispersion relation that in a certain limit becomes the dispersion relation of dyonic giant magnons of string theory in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We argue that the deformed classical theories can be lifted to quantum theories when the sine-Gordon theory is embedded in a larger theory that describes the string world-sheet sigma model in AdS(5)xS(5).

These generalised sine-Gordon theories have been shown to be related to the world sheet theory of the string in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We provide a careful analysis of the boundary conditions at spatial infinity complicated by the fact that they are defined by actions with a WZ term. We go on to describe the local and non-local charges carried by the kinks and end by showing that their structure is perfectly consistent with the exact factorizable S-matrices that have been proposed to describe these theories.

The world-sheet S-matrix of the string in AdS5 x S5 has been shown to admit a q-deformation that relates it to the S-matrix of a generalization of the sine-Gordon theory, which arises as the Pohlmeyer reduction of the superstring. Whilst this is a fascinating development the resulting S-matrix is not explicitly unitary. The problem has been known for a long time in the context of S-matrices related to quantum groups. A braiding relation often called "unitarity" actually only corresponds to quantum field theory unitarity when the S-matrix is Hermitian analytic and quantum group S-matrices manifestly violate this. On the other hand, overall consistency of the S-matrix under the bootstrap requires that the deformation parameter is a root of unity and consequently one is forced to perform the "vertex" to IRF, or SOS, transformation on the states to truncate the spectrum consistently. In the IRF formulation unitarity is now manifest and the string S-matrix and the S-matrix of the generalised sine-Gordon theory are recovered in two different limits. In the latter case, expanding the Yang-Baxter equation we find that the tree-level S-matrix of the Pohlmeyer-reduced string should satisfy a modified classical Yang-Baxter equation explaining the apparent anomaly in the perturbative computation. We show that the IRF form of the S-matrix meshes perfectly with the bootstrap equations.

The investigation of the q deformation of the S-matrix for excitations on the string world sheet in AdS5 x S5 is continued. We argue that due to the lack of Lorentz invariance the situation is more subtle than in a relativistic theory in that the nature of bound states depends on their momentum. At low enough momentum |p|<E the bound states transform in the anti-symmetric representation of the super-algebra symmetry and become the solitons of the Pohlmeyer reduced theory in the relativistic limit. At a critical momentum |p|=E they become marginally unstable, and at higher momenta the stable bound states are in the symmetric representation and become the familiar magnons in the string limit as q->1. This subtlety fixes a problem involving the consistency of crossing symmetry with the relativistic limit found in earlier work. With mirror kinematics, obtained after a double Wick rotation, the bound state structure is simpler and there are no marginally unstable bound states.

A set of four factorizable non-relativistic S-matrices for a multiplet of fundamental particles are defined based on the R-matrix of the quantum group deformation of the centrally extended superalgebra su(2|2). The S-matrices are a function of two independent couplings g and q=exp(iπ/k). The main result is to find the scalar factor, or dressing phase, which ensures that the unitarity and crossing equations are satisfied. For generic (g,k), the S-matrices are branched functions on a product of rapidity tori. In the limit k->infinity, one of them is identified with the S-matrix describing the magnon excitations on the string world sheet in AdS5 x S5, while another is the mirror S-matrix that is needed for the TBA. In the g->infinity limit, the rapidity torus degenerates, the branch points disappear and the S-matrices become meromorphic functions, as required by relativistic S-matrix theory. However, it is only the mirror S-matrix which satisfies the correct relativistic crossing equation. The mirror S-matrix in the relativistic limit is then closely related to that of the semi-symmetric space sine-Gordon theory obtained from the string theory by the Pohlmeyer reduction, but has anti-symmetric rather than symmetric bound states. The interpolating S-matrix realizes at the quantum level the fact that at the classical level the two theories correspond to different limits of a one-parameter family of symplectic structures of the same integrable system.

We construct a relativistic scattering theory based on a q deformation and large string tension limit of the magnon S-matrix of the string world sheet theory in AdS_5 x S^5. The S-matrix falls naturally into a previously studied class associated to affine quantum groups, in this case for a twisted affine loop superalgebra associated to an outer automorphism of sl(2|2). This infinite algebra includes the celebrated triply extended psl(2|2) x R^3 algebra, but only two of the centres, the lightcone components of the 2-momentum, are non-vanishing. The algebra has the interpretation as an extended supersymmetry algebra including a non-trivial R-symmetry. The representation theory of this algebra has some complications in that tensor products are reducible but indecomposable, however, we find that structure meshes perfectly with the bootstrap, or fusion, equations of S-matrix theory. The bootstrap equations can then be used inductively to generate the complete S-matrix. Unlike the magnon theory, the relativistic theory only has a finite set of states and we find that - at least when the deformation parameter q is a root of unity - the spectrum matches precisely the soliton spectrum of the relativistic theory underlying the Pohlmeyer reduction of the string world sheet theory known as the semi-symmetric space sine-Gordon theory.

They are formulated in terms of a semi-symmetric space as a gauged WZW model with fermions and a potential term to deform it away from the conformal fixed point. We consider in particular the case of PSU(2,2|4)/Sp(2,2)xSp(4) which corresponds to AdS(5)xS(5). We argue that the infinite tower of conserved charges of these theories includes an exotic N=(8,8) supersymmetry that is realized in a mildy non-local way at the Lagrangian level. The supersymmetry is associated to a double central extension of the superalgebra psu(2|2)+psu(2|2) and includes a non-trivial R symmetry algebra corresponding to global gauge transformations, as well as 2-dimensional spacetime translations. We then explicitly construct soliton solutions and show that they carry an internal moduli superspace CP(2|1)xCP(2|1) with both bosonic and Grassmann collective coordinates. We show how to semi-classical quantize the solitons by writing an effective quantum mechanical system on the moduli space which takes the form of a co-adjoint orbit of SU(2|2)xSU(2|2). The spectrum consists of a tower of massive states in the short, or atypical, symmetric representations, just as the giant magnon states of the string world sheet theory, although here the tower is truncated.

We show that the solitons are kinks that carry an internal moduli space that can be identified with a particular co-adjoint orbit of the unbroken subgroup H of G. Classically the solitons come in a continuous spectrum which encompasses the perturbative fluctuations of the theory as the kink charge becomes small. We show that the solitons can be quantized by allowing the collective coordinates to be time-dependent to yield a form of quantum mechanics on the co-adjoint orbit. The quantum states correspond to symmetric tensor representations of the symmetry group H and have the interpretation of a fuzzy geometric version of the co-adjoint orbit. The motion of strings on symmetric space target spaces underlies the integrability of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Although these theories, whose excitations are giant magnons, are non-relativistic they are classically equivalent, via the Polhmeyer reduction, to a relativistic integrable field theory known as a symmetric space sine-Gordon theory. These theories can be formulated as integrable deformations of gauged WZW models. In this work we consider the class of symmetric spaces CP^{n+1} and solve the corresponding generalized sine-Gordon theories at the quantum level by finding the exact spectrum of topological solitons, or kinks, and their S-matrix. The latter involves a trignometric solution of the Yang-Baxer equation which exhibits a quantum group symmetry with a tower of states that is bounded, unlike for magnons, as a result of the quantum group deformation parameter q being a root of unity. We test the S-matrix by taking the semi-classical limit and comparing with the time delays for the scattering of classical solitons. We argue that the internal CP^{n-1} moduli space of collective coordinates of the solitons in the classical theory can be interpreted as a q-deformed fuzzy space in the quantum theory. We analyse the n=1 case separately and provide a further test of the S-matrix conjecture in this case by calculating the central charge of the UV CFT using the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz.

A systematic group theoretical formulation of the Pohlmeyer reduction is presented. It provides a map between the equations of motion of sigma models with target-space a symmetric space M=F/G and a class of integrable multi-component generalizations of the sine-Gordon equation. When M is of definite signature their solutions describe classical bosonic string configurations on the curved space-time R_t\times M. In contrast, if M is of indefinite signature the solutions to those equations can describe bosonic string configurations on R_t\times M, M\times S^1_\vartheta or simply M. The conditions required to enable the Lagrangian formulation of the resulting equations in terms of gauged WZW actions with a potential term are clarified, and it is shown that the corresponding Lagrangian action is not unique in general. The Pohlmeyer reductions of sigma models on CP^n and AdS_n are discussed as particular examples of symmetric spaces of definite and indefinite signature, respectively.

We propose an alternative understanding of the relationship between massive and massless magnonic TBA systems, using the T-duality symmetries of the Homogeneous sine-Gordon models. This is shown to be in agreement with a previous treatment by Dorey, Dunning and Tateo, based on the properties of Y-systems.

We show that $\N=1$ gauge theories with an adjoint chiral multiplet admit a wide class of large-N double-scaling limits where $N$ is taken to infinity in a way coordinated with a tuning of the bare superpotential. The tuning is such that the theory is near an Argyres-Douglas-type singularity where a set of non-local dibaryons becomes massless in conjunction with a set of confining strings becoming tensionless. The doubly-scaled theory consists of two decoupled sectors, one whose spectrum and interactions follow the usual large-N scaling whilst the other has light states of fixed mass in the large-N limit which subvert the usual large-N scaling and lead to an interacting theory in the limit. $F$-term properties of this interacting sector can be calculated using a Dijkgraaf-Vafa matrix model and in this context the double-scaling limit is precisely the kind investigated in the "old matrix model'' to describe two-dimensional gravity coupled to $c<1$ conformal field theories. In particular, the old matrix model double-scaling limit describes a sector of a gauge theory with a mass gap and light meson-like composite states, the approximate Goldstone boson of superconformal invariance, with a mass which is fixed in the double-scaling limit. Consequently, the gravitational $F$-terms in these cases satisfy the string equation of the KdV hierarchy.

The T-duality symmetries of a family of two-dimensional massive integrable field theories defined in terms of asymmetric gauged Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten actions modified by a potential are investigated. These theories are examples of massive non-linear sigma models and, in general, T-duality relates two different dual sigma models perturbed by the same potential. When the unperturbed theory is self-dual, the duality transformation relates two perturbations of the same sigma model involving different potentials. Examples of this type are provided by the Homogeneous sine-Gordon theories, associated with cosets of the form G/U(1)^r where G is a compact simple Lie group of rank r. They exhibit a duality transformation for each element of the Weyl group of G that relates two different phases of the model. On-shell, T-duality provides a map between the solutions to the equations of motion of the dual models that changes Noether soliton charges into topological ones. This map is carefully studied in the complex sine-Gordon model, where it motivates the construction of Bogomol'nyi-like bounds for the energy that provide a novel characterisation of the already known one-solitons solutions where their classical stability becomes explicit.

The finite-size behaviours of the homogeneous sine-Gordon models are analysed in detail, using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Crossovers are observed which allow scales associated with both stable and unstable quantum particles to be picked up. By introducing the concept of shielding, we show that these match precisely with the mass scales found classically, supporting the idea that the full set of unstable particle states persists even far from the semiclassical regime. General rules for the effective TBA systems governing individual crossovers are given, and we also comment on the Lagrangian treatment of the theories, novel issues which arise in the form-factor approach for theories with unstable particles, and the role of heterotic cosets in the staircase flows exhibited by the HSG models.

The perturbed conformal field theories corresponding to the massive Symmetric Space sine-Gordon soliton theories are identified by calculating the central charge of the unperturbed conformal field theory and the conformal dimension of the perturbation. They are described by an action with a positive-definite kinetic term and a real potential term bounded from below, their equations of motion are non-abelian affine Toda equations and, moreover, they exhibit a mass gap. The unperturbed CFT corresponding to the compact symmetric space G/G_0 is either the WZNW action for G_0 or the gauged WZNW action for a coset of the form G_0/U(1)^p. The quantum integrability of the theories that describe perturbations of a WZNW action, named Split models, is established by showing that they have quantum conserved quantities of spin +3 and -3. Together with the already known results for the other massive theories associated with the non-abelian affine Toda equations, the Homogeneous sine-Gordon theories, this supports the conjecture that all the massive Symmetric Space sine-Gordon theories will be quantum integrable and, hence, will admit a factorizable S-matrix. The general features of the soliton spectrum are discussed, and some explicit soliton solutions for the Split models are constructed. In general, the solitons will carry both topological charges and abelian Noether charges. Moreover, the spectrum is expected to include stable and unstable particles.

We apply the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz to investigate the high energy behaviour of a class of scattering matrices which have recently been proposed to describe the Homogeneous sine-Gordon models related to simply laced Lie algebras. A characteristic feature is that some elements of the suggested S-matrices are not parity invariant and contain resonance shifts which allow for the formation of unstable bound states. From the Lagrangian point of view these models may be viewed as integrable perturbations of WZNW-coset models and in our analysis we recover indeed in the deep ultraviolet regime the effective central charge related to these cosets, supporting therefore the S-matrix proposal. For the $SU(3)_k$-model we present a detailed numerical analysis of the scaling function which exhibits the well known staircase pattern for theories involving resonance parameters, indicating the energy scales of stable and unstable particles. We demonstrate that, as a consequence of the interplay between the mass scale and the resonance parameter, the ultraviolet limit of the HSG-model may be viewed alternatively as a massless ultraviolet-infrared-flow between different conformal cosets. For $k=2$ we recover as a subsystem the flow between the tricritical Ising and the Ising model.

Examples are provided of integrable quantum field theories whose (diagonal) two-particle S-matrix amplitudes are Hermitian analytic but not Real analytic. It is also shown that Hermitian analyticity is consistent with the bootstrap equations and that it ensures the equivalence between the notion of unitarity in the quantum group approach to factorised S-matrices and the genuine unitarity of the S-matrix.

For a class of generalized integrable hierarchies associated with affine (twisted or untwisted) Kac-Moody algebras, an explicit representation of their local conserved densities by means of a single scalar tau-function is deduced. This tau-function acts as a partition function for the conserved densities, which fits its potential interpretation as the effective action of some quantum system. The class consists of multi-component generalizations of the Drinfel'd-Sokolov and the two-dimensional affine Toda lattice hierarchies. The relationship between the former and the approach of Feigin, Frenkel and Enriquez to soliton equations of KdV and mKdV type is also discussed. These results considerably simplify the calculation of the conserved charges carried by the soliton solutions to the equations of the hierarchy, which is important to establish their interpretation as particles. By way of illustration, we calculate the charges carried by a set of constrained KP solitons recently constructed.

The solutions of a large class of hierarchies of zero-curvature equations that includes Toda and KdV type hierarchies are investigated. All these hierarchies are constructed from affine (twisted or untwisted) Kac-Moody algebras~$\ggg$. Their common feature is that they have some special ``vacuum solutions'' corresponding to Lax operators lying in some abelian (up to the central term) subalgebra of~$\ggg$; in some interesting cases such subalgebras are of the Heisenberg type. Using the dressing transformation method, the solutions in the orbit of those vacuum solutions are constructed in a uniform way. Then, the generalized tau-functions for those hierarchies are defined as an alternative set of variables corresponding to certain matrix elements evaluated in the integrable highest-weight representations of~$\ggg$. Such definition of tau-functions applies for any level of the representation, and it is independent of its realization (vertex operator or not). The particular important cases of generalized mKdV and KdV hierarchies as well as the abelian and non abelian affine Toda theories are discussed in detail.

These algebras are known to have conformal properties, and their relation to $\cal W$-algebras has been previously investigated in some particular cases. The class of equations that is considered includes practically all the generalizations of the Drinfel'd-Sokolov hierarchies constructed in the literature. In particular, it has been recently shown that it includes matrix generalizations of the Gelfand-Dickey and the constrained KP hierarchies. Therefore, our results provide a unified description of the relation between the Hamiltonian structure of soliton equations and $\cal W$-algebras, and it comprises almost all the results formerly obtained by other authors. We derive sufficient conditions under which the ``second'' Hamiltonian structure of a class of generalized KdV-hierarchies defines one of the classical $\cal W$-algebras obtained through Drinfel'd-Sokolov Hamiltonian reduction. These integrable hierarchies are associated to the Heisenberg subalgebras of an untwisted affine Kac-Moody algebra. When the principal Heisenberg subalgebra is chosen, the well known connection between the Hamiltonian structure of the generalized Drinfel'd-Sokolov hierarchies - the Gel'fand-Dickey algebras - and the $\cal W$-algebras associated to the Casimir invariants of a Lie algebra is recovered. After carefully discussing the relations between the embeddings of $A_1=sl(2,{\Bbb C})$ into a simple Lie algebra $g$ and the elements of the Heisenberg subalgebras of $g^{(1)}$, we identify the class of $\cal W$-algebras that can be defined in this way. For $A_n$, this class only includes those associated to the embeddings labelled by partitions of the form $n+1= k(m) + q(1)$ and $n+1= k(m+1) + k(m) + q(1)$.

The symmetries arise in a very natural way from the semi-direct product structure of the Virasoro algebra and the affine Kac--Moody algebra underlying the construction of the hierarchy. In particular, the generators of the symmetries are shown to satisfy a subalgebra of the Virasoro algebra. When a tau-function formalism is available, the infinitesimal symmetries act directly on the tau-functions as moments of Virasoro currents. The problem of interpreting a set of ${\cal W}$-algebra constraints constructed in terms of an arbitrarily twisted scalar field as the recursion relations of a topological theory is addressed. In this picture, the conventional models of topological gravity coupled to $A$, $D$ or $E$ topological matter, correspond to taking the scalar field twisted by the Coxeter element of the Weyl group. It turns out that not all conjugacy classes of the Weyl group lead to a topological model. For example, it is shown that for the $A$ algebras there are two possible choices for the conjugacy class, giving both the conventional and a new series of topological models. Furthermore, it is shown how the new series of theories contains the conventional series as a subsector. A tentative interpretation of this new series in terms of intersection theory is presented.

Abstract:
The tau-function formalism for a class of generalized ``zero-curvature'' integrable hierarchies of partial differential equations, is constructed. The class includes the Drinfel'd-Sokolov hierarchies. A direct relation between the variables of the zero-curvature formalism and the tau-functions is established. The formalism also clarifies the connection between the zero-curvature hierarchies and the Hirota-type hierarchies of Kac and Wakimoto.

Universality and Non-Perturbative Definitions of 2D Quantum Gravity from Matrix Models
Authors:
J. Luis Miramontes,
Joaquin Sanchez Guillen
Abstract:
The universality of the non-perturbative definition of Hermitian one-matrix models following the quantum, stochastic, or $d=1$-like stabilization is discussed in comparison with other procedures. We also present another alternative definition, which illustrates the need of new physical input for $d=0$ matrix models to make contact with 2D quantum gravity at the non-perturbative level.

Instantons in the Quantum Framework of 2D Gravity
Authors:
J. Luis Miramontes,

Abstract:
We analyze the non--perturbative features of 2D quantum gravity defined by stochastic regularization of the unstable matrix model showing, first, that the WKB approximation of the well-defined quantum Fokker-Planck hamiltonian corresponds to the semiclassical eigenvalue density of the former. The double scaled potential exhibits an instanton--like behaviour, which is universal and scales, but wh…

The double scaled potential exhibits an instanton--like behaviour, which is universal and scales, but whose interpretation in terms of pure gravity is still open.

Abstract:
In this paper we examine the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the generalized KdV-hierarchies. We verify that both Hamiltonian structures take the form of Kirillov brackets on the Kac-Moody algebra, and that they define a coordinated system. Classical extended conformal algebras are obtained from the second Poisson bracket. In particular, we construct the $W_n^l$ algebras, first discussed for the cas…

We verify that both Hamiltonian structures take the form of Kirillov brackets on the Kac-Moody algebra, and that they define a coordinated system. Classical extended conformal algebras are obtained from the second Poisson bracket. In particular, we construct the $W_n^l$ algebras, first discussed for the case $n=3$ and $l=2$ by A. Polyakov and M. Bershadsky.
