The structure of evaporated amorphous Ge$_x$Sb$_x$Te$_{100-2x}$ ($x =$ 6, 9, 13) alloys was investigated by neutron diffraction, X-ray diffraction and extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS) at the Ge, Sb and Te K-edges. Large scale structural models were generated by fitting the experimental datasets (5 for each composition) simultaneously in the framework of the reverse Monte Carlo simulation technique. It was found that the alloys are chemically ordered (Ge and Sb have predominantly Te neighbors) and within the experimental uncertainty each component satisfies the $8-N$ rule. A comparison with the pair correlation functions of melt quenched Ge$_{20}$Te$_{80}$ revealed that the first minimum of $g_{\mathrm{TeTe}}(r)$ is shallower in the ternary alloys than in Ge$_{20}$Te$_{80}$. On the other hand, the separation of the first and second coordination environments of Ge atoms is stronger in the Ge-Sb-Te alloys investigated.

A novel complex-phase steel alloy is conceived with a deliberately unstable austenite, $γ$, phase that enables the deformation-induced martensitic transformations (DIMT) to be explored at low levels of plastic strain. The DIMT was thus explored, in-situ and non-destructively, using both far-field Three-Dimensional X-Ray Diffraction (3DXRD) and Electron Back-Scatter Diffraction (EBSD). Substantial $α'$ martensite formation was observed under 10% applied strain with EBSD, and many $\varepsilon$ grain formation events were captured with 3DXRD, indicative of the indirect transformation of martensite via the reaction $γ\rightarrow \varepsilon \rightarrow α'$. Using $\varepsilon$ grain formation as a direct measurement of $γ$ grain stability, the influence of several microstructural properties, such as grain size, orientation and neighbourhood configuration, on $γ$ stability have been identified. Larger $γ$ grains were found to be less stable than smaller grains. Any $γ$ grains oriented with {100} parallel to the loading direction preferentially transformed with lower stresses. Parent $\varepsilon$-forming $γ$ grains possessed a neighbourhood with increased ferritic/martensitic volume fraction. This finding shows, unambiguously, that $α$/$α'$ promotes $\varepsilon$ formation in neighbouring grains. The minimum strain work criterion model for $\varepsilon$ variant prediction was also evaluated, which worked well for most grains. However, $\varepsilon$-forming grains with a lower stress were less well predicted by the model, indicating crystal-level behaviour must be considered for accurate $\varepsilon$ formation. The findings from this work are considered key for the future design of alloys where the deformation response can be controlled by tailoring microstructure and local or macroscopic crystal orientations.

The ability to characterise the three-dimensional microstructure of multiphase materials is essential for understanding the interaction between phases and associated materials properties. Here, laboratory-based diffraction-contrast tomography (DCT), a recently-established materials characterization technique that can determine grain phases, morphologies, positions and orientations in a voxel-based reconstruction method, was used to map part of a dual-phase steel alloy sample. To assess the resulting microstructures that were produced by the DCT technique, an EBSD map was collected within the same sample volume. To identify the 2D slice of the 3D DCT reconstruction that best corresponded to the EBSD map, a novel registration technique based solely on grain-averaged orientations was developed -- this registration technique requires very little a priori knowledge of dataset alignment and can be extended to other techniques that only recover grain-averaged orientation data such as far-field 3D X-ray diffraction microscopy. Once the corresponding 2D slice was identified in the DCT dataset, comparisons of phase balance, grain size, shape and texture were performed between DCT and EBSD techniques. More complicated aspects of the microstructural morphology such as grain boundary shape and grains less than a critical size were poorly reproduced by the DCT reconstruction, primarily due to the difference in resolutions of the technique compared with EBSD. However, lab-based DCT is shown to accurately determine the centre-of-mass position, orientation, and size of the large grains for each phase present, austenite and martensitic ferrite. The results reveals a complex ferrite grain network of similar crystal orientations that are absent from the EBSD dataset. Such detail demonstrates that lab-based DCT, as a technique, shows great promise in the field of multi-phase material characterization.

Abstract:
The modification of the coefficients of formal power series is analyzed in order that such variation preserves q-Gevrey asymptotic properties, in particular q-Gevrey asymptotic expansions. A characterization of such sequences is determined, providing a handy tool in practice. The sequence of q-factorials is proved to preserve q-Gevrey asymptotic expansions.

Three-dimensional X-ray diffraction (3DXRD) has been used to measure, in-situ, the evolution of $\sim 1800$ grains in a single phase low carbon ferritic steel sample during uniaxial deformation. The distribution of initial residual grain stresses in the material was observed to prevail as plasticity builds, though became less pronounced, and therefore less influential as strain increased. The initial Schmid factor of a grain was found to be strongly correlated to the intergranular stress change and the range of stresses that are permissible; a grain well aligned for easy slip is more likely to exhibit a range of stresses than those orientated poorly for dislocation motion. The orientation path of a grain, however, is not only dependent on its initial orientation, but hypothesised to be influenced by its stress state and the stress state of its grain environment. A grain neighbourhood effect is observed: the Schmid factor of serial adjoining grains influences the stress state of a grain of interest, whereas parallel neighbours are much less influential. This phenomenon is strongest at low plastic strains only, with the effect diminishing as plasticity builds. The influence of initial residual stresses becomes less evident, and grains rotate to eliminate any orientation dependent load shedding. The ability of the BCC ferrite to exhaust such neighbourhood interactions, which would otherwise be detrimental in crystal structures with lower symmetric and fewer slip systems, is considered key to the high ductility possessed by these materials.

It was found that both constituents (Ge and S) satisfy the Mott-rule in all investigated glasses: Ge and S atoms have 4 and 2 neighbours, respectively. The structure of these glasses can be described with the chemically ordered network model: Ge-S bonds are preferred, S-S bonds are present only in S-rich glasses. Dedicated simulations showed that Ge-Ge bonds are necessary in Ge-rich glasses. Connections between Ge atoms (such as edge-sharing GeS$_{4/2}$ tetrahedra) in stoichiometric and S-rich glasses were analysed. The frequency of primitive rings was also calculated.

Three-dimensional X-ray diffraction (3DXRD) is shown to be feasible at the I12 Joint Engineering, Environmental and Processing (JEEP) beamline of Diamond Light Source. As a demonstration, a microstructually simple low-carbon ferritic steel was studied in a highly textured and annealed state. A processing pipeline suited to this beamline was created, using software already established in the 3DXRD user community, enabling grain centre-of-mass positions, orientations and strain tensor elements to be determined. Orientations, with texture measurements independently validated from electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) data, possessed a $\sim 0.1^\circ$ uncertainty, comparable with other 3DXRD instruments. The spatial resolution was limited by the far-field detector pixel size; the average of the grain centre of mass position errors was determined as $\pm \sim 80 μ$m. An average per-grain error of $\sim 1 \times 10^{-3}$ for the elastic strains was also measured; this could be reduced in future experiments by improving sample preparation, data collection and analysis techniques. Application of 3DXRD onto I12 shows great potential, where its implementation is highly desirable due the flexible, open architecture of the beamline. User-owned or designed sample environments can be used, thus 3DXRD could be applied to previously unexplored scientific areas.

The damage mechanisms and load redistribution of high strength TC17 titanium alloy/unidirectional SiC fibre composite (fibre diameter = 100 $μ$m) under high temperature (350 °C) fatigue cycling have been investigated in situ using synchrotron X-ray computed tomography (CT) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for high cycle fatigue (HCF) under different stress amplitudes. The three-dimensional morphology of the crack and fibre fractures has been mapped by CT. During stable growth, matrix cracking dominates with the crack deflecting (by 50-100 $μ$m in height) when bypassing bridging fibres. A small number of bridging fibres have fractured close to the matrix crack plane especially under relatively high stress amplitude cycling. Loading to the peak stress led to rapid crack growth accompanied by a burst of fibre fractures. Many of the fibre fractures occurred 50-300 $μ$m from the matrix crack plane during rapid growth, in contrast to that in the stable growth stage, leading to extensive fibre pull-out on the fracture surface. The changes in fibre loading, interfacial stress, and the extent of fibre-matrix debonding in the vicinity of the crack have been mapped for the fatigue cycle and after the rapid growth by high spatial resolution XRD. The fibre/matrix interfacial sliding extends up to 600 $μ$m (in the stable growth zone) or 700 $μ$m (in the rapid growth zone) either side of the crack plane. The direction of interfacial shear stress reverses with the loading cycle, with the maximum frictional sliding stress reaching ~55 MPa in both the stable growth and rapid growth regimes.

The average coordination number of Te atoms is significantly higher than 2 for $x$ = 12.5 and 14.3. Atomic structure studies performed with X-ray diffraction and synchrotron powder diffraction provided average atomic volumes, structure factors, radial distribution functions, coordination numbers and packing densities. Electronic structure studies performed using photoemission spectroscopy and low-temperature specific heat provided information about the electronic density of states within the valence band and at the Fermi level and also about interatomic bonding and atomic vibrations (from the Debye temperature and the boson peak). Variations of both atomic structure and electronic structure with x showed a clear change for x $\geq$ 0.35, which corresponds to a valence electron number $\geq$ 7.4. All physical properties, namely thermal stability parameters, Debye temperatures, boson peaks, magnetic, elastic and electronic transport properties change their concentration-dependence for x$\geq$ 0.35. The results are compared with those for binary and ternary MGs of the same elements.

The short range order in Ge$_{30}$Ga$_{5}$Sb$_{10}$Se$_{55}$ and Ge$_{21}$Ga$_{5}$Sb$_{10}$Se$_{64}$ glasses was investigated by X-ray (XRD) and neutron diffraction (ND) as well as extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Ge, Ga, Sb and Se K-edges. Large scale structural models were obtained by fitting simultaneously the experimental data sets by reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulation technique. It was found that Ge, Sb and Se atoms follow the Mott-rule and have 4, 3 and 2 nearest neighbors, respectively. The average coordination number of the Ga atoms was around 4. The structure of these glasses can be described by the chemically ordered network model: the Ge-Se, Ga-Se and Sb-Se bonds are the most prominent while Ge-Ge and Ge-Sb bonds are formed only in Se-poor compositions. Models generated by RMC contained some long distances (0.3-0.4 Å higher than the usual covalent bond lengths) between Ge-Se and/or Ge-Ge pairs. Dedicated simulation runs confirm the existence of these bonds.

In particular we study the theory of zonal polyharmonics, which allows us, analogously to zonal harmonics, to construct Poisson kernels for polyharmonic functions on the union of rotated balls. We find the representation of Poisson kernels and zonal polyharmonics in terms of the Gegenbauer polynomials. We show the connection between the classical Poisson kernel for harmonic functions on the ball, Poisson kernels for polyharmonic functions on the union of rotated balls, and the Cauchy-Hua kernel for holomorphic functions on the Lie ball.

We extend holomorphically polyharmonic functions on a real ball to a complex set being the union of rotated balls. We solve a Dirichlet type problem for complex polyharmonic functions with the boundary condition given on the union of rotated spheres.

The Stokes phenomenon for certain partial differential equations with meromorphic initial data
Authors:

Abstract:
We study the Stokes phenomenon for the solutions of the 1-dimensional complex heat equation and its generalizations with meromorphic initial data. We use the theory of Borel summability for the description of the Stokes lines, the anti-Stokes lines, jumps across the Stokes lines, and the maximal family of the solutions.

Summable solutions of some partial differential equations and generalised integral means
Authors:

Abstract:
We describe partial differential operators for which we can construct generalised integral means satisfying Pizzetti-type formulas. Using these formulas we give a new characterisation of summability of formal power series solutions to some multidimensional partial differential equations in terms of holomorphic properties of generalised integral means of the Cauchy data.

Using microemulsion methods, CoO-Pt core-shell nanoparticles (NPs), with diameters of nominally 4 nm, were synthesized and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and a suite of x-ray spectroscopies, including diffraction (XRD), absorption (XAS), absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and extended absorption fine structure (EXAFS), which confirmed the existence of CoO cores and pure Pt surface layers. Using a commercial magnetometer, the ac and dc magnetic properties were investigated over a range of temperature (2 K $\leq$ T $\leq$ 300 K), magnetic field ($\leq$ 50 kOe), and frequency ($\leq$ 1 kHz). The data indicate the presence of two different magnetic regimes whose onsets are identified by two maxima in the magnetic signals, with a narrow maximum centered at 6 K and a large one centered at 37 K. The magnetic responses in these two regimes exhibit different frequency dependences, where the maximum at high temperature follows a Vogel-Fulcher law, indicating a superparamagnetic (SPM) blocking of interacting nanoparticle moments and the maximum at low temperature possesses a power law response characteristic of a collective freezing of the nanoparticle moments in a superspin glass (SSG) state. This co-existence of blocking and freezing behaviors is consistent with the nanoparticles possessing an antiferromagnetically ordered core, with an uncompensated magnetic moment, and a magnetically disordered interlayer between CoO core and Pt shell.
