We investigate the effect of structural deformation on the magnetic properties of orthorhombic CePdAl$_3$ in relation to its tetragonal polymorph. Utilizing x-ray and neutron diffraction we establish that the crystal structure has the $Cmcm$ space group symmetry and exhibits pseudo-tetragonal twinning. According to density-functional calculations the tetragonal-orthorhombic deformation mechanism has its grounds in relatively small free enthalpy difference between the polymorphs, allowing either phase to be quenched and fully accounts for the twinned microstructure of the orthorhombic phase. Neutron diffraction measurements show that orthorhombic CePdAl$_3$ establishes long-range magnetic order below $T_\mathrm{N}$=5.29 (5) K characterized by a collinear, antiferromagnetic arrangement of magnetic moments. Magnetic anisotropies of orthorhombic CePdAl$_3$ arise from strong spin-orbit coupling as evidenced by the crystal-field splitting of the $4f$ multiplet, fully characterised with neutron spectroscopy. We discuss the potential mechanism of frustration posed by antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest neighbours in the tetragonal phase, which hinders the formation of long-range magnetic order in tetragonal CePdAl$_3$. We propose that orthorhombic deformation releases the frustration and allows for long-range magnetic order.

Magnetic kagome metals, in which topologically non-trivial band structures and electronic correlation are intertwined, have recently emerged as an exciting platform to explore exotic correlated topological phases, that are usually not found in weakly interacting materials described within the semi-classical picture of electrons. Here, via a comprehensive single-crystal neutron diffraction and first-principles density functional theory study of the archetypical topological kagome metal Mn$_3$Sn, which is also a magnetic Weyl fermion material and a promising chiral magnet for antiferromagnetic spintronics, we report the realisation of an emergent spin-density wave (SDW) order, a hallmark correlated many-body phenomenon, that is engineered by the Fermi surface nesting of topological flat bands. We further reveal that the phase transition, from the well-known high-temperature coplanar and non-collinear k = 0 inverse triangular antiferromagnetic order to a double-$k$ non-coplanar modulated incommensurate magnetic structure below $T_1$ = 280 K, is primarily driven by the SDW instability. The double-$k$ nature of this complex low-temperature magnetic order, which can be regarded as an intriguing superposition of a longitudinal SDW with a modulation wavevector k$_L$ and a transverse incommensurate helical magnetic order with a modulation wavevector k$_T$, is unambiguously confirmed by our observation of the inter-modulation high-order harmonics of the type of 2k$_L$+k$_T$. This discovery not only solves a long-standing puzzle concerning the nature of the phase transition at $T_1$, but also provides an extraordinary example on the intrinsic engineering of correlated many-body phenomena in topological matter. The identified multi-$k$ magnetic state can be further exploited for the engineering of the new modes of magnetization and chirality switching in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

A detailed investigation of Ba$_2$MnGe$_2$O$_7$ was performed in its low-temperature magnetoelectric state combining neutron diffraction with magnetization measurements on single crystals. In the paramagnetic state at 10 K, polarized neutron diffraction was applied to reveal the components of the susceptibility tensor. The crystal and magnetic structures below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature of $T_N \approx 4$ K were determined using unpolarized neutron diffraction. This data implies no structural phase transition from 10 K down to 2.5 K and is well described within the tetragonal space group $P\bar{4}2_1m$. We found that in zero magnetic field the magnetic space group is either $C_cmc2_1$ or $P_c2_12_12_1$ with antiferromagnetic order along the [110] or [100] directions, respectively, while neighboring spins along the [001] axis are ordered antiferromagnetically. A non-collinear spin arrangement due to small canting within the $ab$ plane is allowed by symmetry and observed experimentally. The ordered moment is found to be 3.24(3) $μ_B$/Mn$^{2+}$ at 2.5 K and the temperature-field dependent magnetic phase diagram is mapped out by macroscopic magnetization. Distinct differences between the magnetic structure of Ba$_2$MnGe$_2$O$_7$ as compared to those of Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ and Ca$_2$CoSi$_2$O$_7$ are discussed.

Weyl semimetals are well known for their anomalous transport effects caused by a large fictitious magnetic field generated by the non-zero Berry curvature. We performed the analysis of the electrical transport measurements of the magnetic Weyl semimetal Mn$_{3}$Ge in the a-b and a-c plane. We have observed negative longitudinal magneto-resistance (LMR) at a low magnetic field ($B<1.5$ T) along all the axes. The high field LMR shows different behavior along x and z axes. A similar trend has been observed in the case of planar Hall effect (PHE) measurements as well. The nature of high field LMR along the x axis changes near 200 K. Dominant carrier concentration type, and metallic to semimetallic transition also occur near 200 K. These observations suggest two main conclusions: (i) The high field LMR in Mn$_3$Ge is driven by the metallic - semimetallic nature of the compound. (ii) Mn$_3$Ge compound goes through an electronic band topological transition near 200 K. Single crystal neutron diffraction does not show any change in the magnetic structure below 300 K. However, the in-plane lattice parameter (a) shows a maximum near 230 K. Therefore, it is possible that the change in electronic band structure near 200 K is driven by the a lattice parameter of the compound.

Structural, magnetic and multiferroic properties of single crystals of Dy$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x = 0, 0.2$) were investigated by the different methods of polarized and classical neutron diffraction and macroscopic methods in order to determine the effect of Ho do** on the magneto-electric behavior of the title compounds. It is shown that substitution by Ho of 20% on the position of Dy do not change overall crystal symmetry of compound. It remains of Pnma type for both compositions down to the very low temperatures. Magnetic ordering do not change the crystal structure. Precise magnetic order and it detailed temperature and field evolution both in the pristine and substituted compounds we determined using single crystal neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. The results show a complex interplay between transition metal and rear earth magnetic sub lattices leading to so-called "Mn-controlled" and "Dy-controlled" magnetic states. Using polarized neutron diffraction 3D character of rear earth magnetic order in Dy$_{0.8}$Ho$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$ in contract to DyMnO$_3$ and occurrence of the chiral type magnetic structure on Mn subsystem could be revealed. The influence of the external electric field on the magnetic chirality could be directly evidenced, proving strong magneto-electric coupling in multiferroic phase. The study of the electric polarization under similar temperatures and fields on the same samples provides the direct correlation between the results of the microscopic and macroscopic investigations.

We report a comprehensive study of single crystals of the noncentrosymmetric rare-earth compound EuPtSi$_{3}$ grown by the optical floating-zone technique. Measurements of the magnetization, ac susceptibility, and specific heat consistently establish antiferromagnetic order of localized Eu$^{2+}$ moments below the Néel temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 17~\mathrm{K}$, followed by a second magnetic transition at $T_{\mathrm{N1}} = 16~\mathrm{K}$. For a magnetic field along the easy $[001]$ axis, the magnetic phase diagram is composed of these two phases. For fields applied in the magnetically hard basal plane, two additional phases emerge under magnetic field, where the in-plane anisotropy is weak with $[100]$ being the hardest axis. At the phase transitions, the magnetic properties exhibit hysteresis and discrepancies between differential and ac susceptibility, suggesting slow reorientation processes of mesoscale magnetic textures. Consistently, powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction in zero field identify magnetic textures that are modulated on a length scale of the order of $100~\textrm{Å}$, most likely in the form of Néel-type antiferromagnetic cycloids.

We present a combined x-ray and neutron diffraction study of the stripe ordered superconductor \lscox{0.12}. The average crystal structure is consistent with the orthorhombic $Bmab$ space group as commonly reported in the literature. This structure however is not symmetry compatible with a second order phase transition into the stripe order phase, and, as we report here numerous Bragg peaks forbidden in the $Bmab$ space group are observed. We have studied and analysed these $Bmab$-forbidden Bragg reflections. Fitting of the diffraction intensities yields monoclinic lattice distortions that are symmetry consistent with charge stripe order.

The availability of large high-quality single crystals is an important prerequisite for many studies in solid-state research. The optical floating-zone technique is an elegant method to grow such crystals, offering potential to prepare samples that may be hardly accessible with other techniques. As elaborated in this report, examples include single crystals with intentional compositional gradients, deliberate off-stoichiometry, or complex metallurgy. For the cubic chiral magnets Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si and Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si, we prepared single crystals in which the composition was varied during growth from $x = 0 - 0.15$ and from $x = 0.1 - 0.3$, respectively. Such samples allowed us to efficiently study the evolution of the magnetic properties as a function of composition, as demonstrated by means of neutron scattering. For the archetypical chiral magnet MnSi and the itinerant antiferromagnet CrB$_{2}$, we grew single crystals with varying initial manganese (0.99 to 1.04) and boron (1.95 to 2.1) content. Measurements of the low-temperature properties addressed the correlation between magnetic transition temperature and sample quality. Furthermore, we prepared single crystals of the diborides ErB$_{2}$, MnB$_{2}$, and VB$_{2}$. In addition to high vapor pressures, these materials suffer from peritectic formation, potential decomposition, and high melting temperature, respectively.

The recently discovered material Cs$_3$Fe$_2$Br$_9$ contains Fe$_2$Br$_9$ bi-octahedra forming triangular layers with hexagonal stacking along the $c$ axis. In contrast to isostructural Cr-based compounds, the zero-field ground state is not a nonmagnetic $S=0$ singlet-dimer state. Instead, the Fe$_2$Br$_9$ bi-octahedra host semiclassical $S=5/2$ Fe$^{3+}$ spins with a pronounced easy-axis anisotropy along $c$ and interestingly, the intra-dimer spins are ordered ferromagnetically. The high degree of magnetic frustration due to (various) competing intra- and inter-dimer couplings leads to a surprisingly rich magnetic phase diagram. Already the zero-field ground state is reached via an intermediate phase, and the high-field magnetization and thermal expansion data for $H\parallel c$ identify ten different ordered phases. Among them are phases with constant magnetization of 1/3, respectively 1/2 of the saturation value, and several transitions are strongly hysteretic with pronounced length changes reflecting strong magnetoelastic coupling.

The crystal and magnetic structure of multiferroic LiFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ were investigated by temperature and magnetic-field dependent specific heat, susceptibility and neutron diffraction experiments on single crystals. Considering only the two nearest-neighbour magnetic interactions, the system forms a $J_1$, $J_2$ magnetic chain but more extended interactions are sizeable. Two different magnetic phases exhibiting long-range incommensurate order evolve at $T_{\text{N}1}\approx 22.2 \text{ K}$ and $T_{\text{N}2}\approx 19 \text{ K}$. First, a spin-density wave develops with moments lying in the $ac$ plane. In its multiferroic phase below $T_{\text{N}2}$, LiFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ exhibits a spiral arrangement with an additional spin-component along $b$. Therefore, the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism fully explains the multiferroic behavior in this material. A partially unbalanced multiferroic domain distribution was observed even in the absence of an applied electric field. For both phases only a slight temperature dependence of the incommensurability was observed and there is no commensurate phase emerging at low temperature or at finite magnetic fields up to $6\text{ T}$. LiFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ thus exhibits a simple phase diagram with the typical sequence of transitions for a type-II multiferroic material.

We investigated the influence of oxygen over-stoichiometry on apical oxygen disorder and magnetic correlations in Nd2NiO4+d (d~0.11) in the temperature range of 2-300 K by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, neutron single crystal and powder diffraction studies, combined with macroscopic magnetic measurements. In the investigated temperature range, the compound crystalizes in a tetragonal commensurate structure with the P42/ncm space group with excess oxygen atoms occupy the 4b (3/4 1/4 1/4) interstitial sites, coordinated by four apical oxygen atoms. Large and anisotropic thermal displacement parameters are found for equatorial and apical oxygen atoms, which are strongly reduced on an absolute scale compared to the Nd2NiO4.23 phase. Maximum Entropy analysis of the neutron single crystal diffraction data uncovered anharmonic contributions to the displacement parameters of the apical oxygen atoms, toward the nearest vacant 4b interstitial site, related to the phonon assisted oxygen diffusion mechanism. Macroscopic magnetization measurements and neutron powder diffraction studies reveal long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ni-sublattice at TN ~ 53 K with a weak ferromagnetic component along the c-axis, while the long-range magnetic ordering of the Nd-sublattice occurs below 10 K. Temperature dependent neutron diffraction patterns show the appearance of a commensurate magnetic order at TN with the propagation vector k = (100) and the emergence of an additional incommensurate phase below 30 K, while both phases coexist at 2 K. The commensurate magnetic structure is best described by the P42/nc`m` Shubnikov space group. Refined magnetic moments of the Ni and Nd-sites at 2 K are 1.144(76) muB and 1.632(52) muB respectively. A possible origin of the incommensurate phase is discussed and a tentative magnetic phase diagram is proposed.

Hole do** in Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4.00}$ can be either achieved by substituting the trivalent Nd atoms by bivalent alkaline earth metals or by oxygen do**, yielding Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4+δ}$. In this study, we investigated the interplay between oxygen and spin ordering for a low oxygen do** concentration i.e. Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4.10}$. Although the extra oxygen do** level remains rather modest with only one out of 20 possible interstitial tetrahedral lattice sites occupied, we observed by single crystal neutron diffraction the presence of a complex 3D modulated structure related to oxygen ordering already at ambient, the modulation vectors being $\pm$2/13\textit{\textbf{a*}}$\pm$3/13\textit{\textbf{b*}}, $\pm$3/13\textit{\textbf{b*}}$\pm$2/13\textit{\textbf{b*}} and $\pm$1/5\textit{\textbf{a*}}$\pm$1/2\textit{\textbf{c*}} and satellite reflections up to fourth order. Temperature dependent neutron diffraction studies indicate the coexistence of oxygen and magnetic ordering below T${}_{N}$ $\simeq$ 48 K, the wave vector of the Ni sublattice being \textbf{\textit{k}}=(100). In addition, magnetic satellite reflections adapt exactly the same modulation vectors as found for the oxygen ordering, evidencing a unique coexistence of 3D modulated ordering for spin and oxygen ordering in Nd${}_{2}$NiO${}_{4.10}$. Temperature dependent measurements of magnetic intensities suggest two magnetic phase transitions below 48 K and 20 K, indicating two distinct onsets of magnetic ordering for the Ni and Nd sublattice, respectively.

We report here a comprehensive study of the AFM structures of the Eu and Mn magnetic sublattices as well as the interplay between Eu and Mn magnetism in this compound by using both polarized and non-polarized single-crystal neutron diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat capacity measurements and the temperature dependence of magnetic diffractions suggest that the AFM ordering temperature of the Eu and Mn moments is at 22 and 337 K, respectively. The magnetic moments of both Eu and Mn ions are oriented along the crystallographic $c$ axis, and the respective magnetic propagation vector is $\textbf{k}_{Eu} = (0,0,1)$ and $\textbf{k}_{Mn}=(0,0,0)$. With proper neutron absorption correction, the ordered moments are refined at 3 K as 7.7(1) $μ_B$ and 4.1(1) $μ_B$ for the Eu and Mn ions, respectively. In addition, a spin-flop (SF) phase transition of the Eu moments in an applied magnetic field along the $c$ axis was confirmed to take place at a critical field of B$_c$ $\sim$ 5.3 T. The evolution of the Eu magnetic moment direction as a function of the applied magnetic field in the SF phase was also determined. Clear kinks in both field and temperature dependence of the magnetic reflections ($\pm1$, 0, 1) of Mn were observed at the onset of the SF phase transition and the AFM order of the Eu moments, respectively. This unambiguously indicates the existence of a strong coupling between Eu and Mn magnetism. The interplay between two magnetic sublattices could bring new possibilities to tune Dirac fermions via changing magnetic structures by applied fields in this class of magnetic topological semimetals.

We present a study of the dielectric, structural, and magnetic properties of the multiferroic or linear magnetoelectric substitution series [(NH$_4$)$_{1-x}$K$_x$]$_2$[FeCl$_5$(H$_2$O)]. Pyroelectric currents, magnetic susceptibilities, and thermodynamic properties were examined on large single crystals of the erythrosiderite compounds and detailed magnetic-field versus temperature phase diagrams are derived for three different substitution levels. With increasing potassium concentration the material is tuned from a multiferroic ($x \le 0.06$) to a linear magnetoelectric ($x \ge 0.15$) ground state. In contrast to the respective pure parent compounds with $x=0$ or 1, however, the ferroelectric or linear magnetoelectric polarization in none of the substituted samples is switchable by external electric fields, because these samples exhibit a significant electric polarization already above the magnetic ordering transition. The polarization arises at a higher-lying structural phase transition that is examined by THz spectroscopy and, on a deuterated pure single crystal, by comprehensive neutron-diffraction experiments. The structural phase transition is attributed to an ordering of NH$_4^+$ tetrahedra but does not break inversion symmetry in the pure material, while a finite K content causes pyroelectricity.

The magnetic structure of the "nonmetallic metal" FeCrAs, a compound with the characters of both metals and insulators, was examined as a function of temperature using single-crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic propagation vector was found to be $\mathit{k}$ = (1/3, 1/3, 0), and the magnetic reflections disppeared above $\mathit{T_{N}}$ = 116(1) K. In the ground state, the Cr sublattice shows an in-plane spiral antiferromagnetic order. The moment sizes of the Cr ions were found to be small, due to strong magnetic frustration in the distorted Kagome lattice or the itinerant nature of the Cr magnetism, and vary between 0.8 and 1.4 $μ_{B}$ on different sites as expected for a spin-density-wave (SDW) type order. The upper limit of the moment on the Fe sublattice is estimated to be less than 0.1 $μ_{B}$. With increasing temperature up to 95 K, the Cr moments cant out of the $\mathit{ab}$ plane gradually, with the in-plane components being suppressed and the out-of-plane components increasing in contrast. This spin-reorientation of Cr moments can explain the dip in the $\mathit{c}$-direction magnetic susceptibility and the kink in the magnetic order parameter at $\mathit{T_{O}}$ ~ 100 K, a second magnetic transition which was unexplained before. We have also discussed the similarity between FeCrAs and the model itinerant magnet Cr, which exhibits spin-flip transitions and SDW-type antiferromagnetism.

Using complementary polarized and unpolarized single-crystal neutron diffraction, we have investigated the temperature-dependent magnetic structures of Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. Upon 50 \% dilution of the Eu sites with isovalent Ca$^{2+}$, the Eu sublattice is found to be still long-range ordered below $\mathit{T_{Eu}}$ = 10 K, in the A-typed antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure. The moment size of Eu$^{2+}$ spins is estimated to be as large as 6.74(4) $μ_{B}$ at 2.5 K. The Fe sublattice undergoes a spin-density-wave transition at $\mathit{T_{SDW}}$ = 192(2) K and displays an in-plane AFM structure above $\mathit{T_{Eu}}$. However, at 2.5 K, the Fe$^{2+}$ moments are found to be ordered in a canted AFM structure with a canting angle of 14(4)° out of the $\mathit{ab}$ plane. The spin reorientation of Fe below the AFM ordering temperature of Eu provides a direct evidence of a strong interplay between the two magnetic sublattices in Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$.

Temperature and field-dependent magnetization $M(H,T)$ measurements and neutron scattering study of a single crystal CeSb$_2$ are presented. Several anomalies in the magnetization curves have been confirmed at low magnetic field, i.e., 15.6 K, 12 K, and 9.8 K. These three transitions are all metamagnetic transitions (MMT), which shift to lower temperatures as the magnetic field increases. The anomaly at 15.6 K has been suggested as paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition. The anomaly located at around 12 K is antiferromagnetic-like transition, and this turning point will clearly split into two when the magnetic field $H\geq0.2$ T. Neutron scattering study reveals that the low temperature ground state of CeSb$_2$ orders antiferromagnetically with commensurate propagation wave vectors $\textbf{k}=(-1,\pm1/6,0)$ and $\textbf{k}=(\pm1/6,-1,0)$, with Néel temperature $T_N\sim9.8$ K. This transition is of first-order, as shown in the hysteresis loop observed by the field cooled cooling (FCC) and field cooled warming (FCW) processes.

We report the low-temperature properties of phase-pure single crystals of the half-Heusler compound CuMnSb grown by means of optical float-zoning. The magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and Hall effect of our single crystals exhibit an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 55~\mathrm{K}$ and a second anomaly at a temperature $T^{*} \approx 34~\mathrm{K}$. Powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction establish an ordered magnetic moment of $(3.9\pm0.1)~μ_{\mathrm{B}}/\mathrm{f.u.}$, consistent with the effective moment inferred from the Curie-Weiss dependence of the susceptibility. Below $T_{\mathrm{N}}$, the Mn sublattice displays commensurate type-II antiferromagnetic order with propagation vectors and magnetic moments along $\langle111\rangle$ (magnetic space group $R[I]3c$). Surprisingly, below $T^{*}$, the moments tilt away from $\langle111\rangle$ by a finite angle $δ\approx 11^{\circ}$, forming a canted antiferromagnetic structure without uniform magnetization consistent with magnetic space group $C[B]c$. Our results establish that type-II antiferromagnetism is not the zero-temperature magnetic ground state of CuMnSb as may be expected of the face-centered cubic Mn sublattice.

The magnetic ground state of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments in a series of Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals grown from the Sn flux has been investigated in detail by neutron diffraction measurements. Combined with the results from the macroscopic properties (resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat) measurements, a phase diagram describing how the Eu magnetic order evolves with Co do** in Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is established. The ground-state magnetic structure of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins is found to develop from the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in the parent compound, via the A-type canted AFM structure with some net ferromagnetic (FM) moment component along the crystallographic $\mathit{c}$ direction at intermediate Co do** levels, finally to the pure FM order at relatively high Co do** levels. The ordering temperature of Eu declines linearly at first, reaches the minimum value of 16.5(2) K around $\mathit{x}$ = 0.100(4), and then reverses upwards with further Co do**. The do**-induced modification of the indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the Eu$^{2+}$ moments, which is mediated by the conduction $\mathit{d}$ electrons on the (Fe,Co)As layers, as well as the change of the strength of the direct interaction between the Eu$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ moments, might be responsible for the change of the magnetic ground state and the ordering temperature of the Eu sublattice. In addition, for Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals with 0.10 $\leqslant$ $\mathit{x}$ $\leqslant$ 0.18, strong ferromagnetism from the Eu sublattice is well developed in the superconducting state, where a spontaneous vortex state is expected to account for the compromise between the two competing phenomena.

We report the design of a radio-frequency induction-heated rod casting furnace that permits the preparation of polycrystalline ingots of intermetallic compounds under ultra-high vacuum compatible conditions. The central part of the system is a bespoke water-cooled Hukin crucible supporting a casting mold. Depending on the choice of mold, typical rods have a diameter between 6 mm and 10 mm and a length up to 90 mm, suitable for single-crystal growth by means of float-zoning. The setup is all-metal sealed and may be baked out. We find that the resulting ultra-high vacuum represents an important precondition for processing compounds with high vapor pressures under a high-purity argon atmosphere up to 3 bar. Using the rod casting furnace, we succeeded to prepare large high-quality single crystals of two half-Heusler compounds, namely the itinerant antiferromagnet CuMnSb and the half-metallic ferromagnet NiMnSb.

We have investigated the temperature evolution of the magnetic structures of HoFeO$_3$ by single crystal neutron diffraction. The three different magnetic structures found as a function of temperature for \hfo\ are described by the magnetic groups Pb$'$n$'2_1$, Pbn$2_1$ and Pbn$'2_1'$ and are stable in the temperature ranges $\approx$ 600-55~K, 55-37~K and 35$>T>2$~K respectively. In all three the fundamental coupling between the Fe sub-lattices remains the same and only their orientation and the degree of canting away from the ideal axial direction varies. The magnetic polarisation of the Ho sub-lattices in these two higher temperature regions, in which the major components of the Fe moment lie along $x$ and $y$, is very small. The canting of the moments from the axial directions is attributed to the antisymmetric interactions allowed by the crystal symmetry. They include contributions from single ion anisotropy as well as the Dzyaloshinski antisymmetric exchange. In the low temperature phase two further structural transitions are apparent in which the spontaneous magnetisation changes sign with respect to the underlying antiferromagnetic configuration. In this temperature range the antisymmetric exchange energy varies rapidly as the the Ho sub-lattices begin to order. So long as the ordered Ho moments are small the antisymmetric exchange is due only to Fe-Fe interactions, but as the degree of Ho order increases the Fe-Ho interactions take over whilst at the lowest temperatures, when the Ho moments approach saturation the Ho-Ho interactions dominate. The reversals of the spontaneous magnetisation found in this study suggest that in \hfo\ the sums of the Fe-Fe and Ho-Ho antisymmetric interactions have the same sign as one another, but that of the Ho-Fe terms is opposite.

For a symmetry consistent theoretical description of the multiferroic phase of Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ a precise knowledge of its crystal structure is a prerequisite. In our previous synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment on multiferroic Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ at room temperature we found forbidden reflections that favour the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic symmetry lowering of the titled compound. Here, we report the results of room-temperature single-crystal diffraction studies with both hot and cold neutrons to differentiate between the real symmetry lowering and multiple diffraction (the Renninger effect). A comparison of the experimental multiple diffraction patterns with simulated ones rules out the symmetry lowering. Thus, the structural model based on the tetragonal space group $P\bar{4}2_1m$ was selected to describe the Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ symmetry at room temperature. The precise structural parameters from neutron diffraction at 300K are presented and compared with the previous X-ray diffraction results.

The magnetic order of the localized Eu$^{2+}$ spins in optimally-doped Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($\mathit{x}$ = 0.12) with superconducting transition temperature $\mathit{T_{SC}}$ = 22 K was investigated by single-crystal neutron diffraction. The Eu$^{2+}$ moments were found to be ferromagnetically aligned along the $\mathit{c}$-direction with an ordered moment of 7.0(1) $μ_{B}$ well below the magnetic phase transition temperature $\mathit{T_{C}}$ = 17 K. No evidence of the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition was found in this compound within the experimental uncertainty, in which the spin-density-wave (SDW) order of the Fe sublattice is supposed to be completely suppressed and the superconductivity gets fully developed. The ferromagnetic groud state of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins in Eu(Fe$_{0.88}$Ir$_{0.12}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ was supported by the first-principles density functional calculation. In addition, comparison of the electronic structure calculations between Eu(Fe$_{0.875}$Ir$_{0.125}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and the parent compound EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ indicates stronger hybridization and more expanded bandwith due to the Ir substitution, which together with the introduction of electrons might work against the Fe-SDW in favor of the superconductivity.

We report the low-temperature properties of $^{11}$B-enriched single-crystal CrB$_{2}$ as prepared from high-purity Cr and B powder by a solid-state reaction and optical float zoning. The electrical resistivity, $ρ_{\rm xx}$, Hall effect, $ρ_{\rm xy}$, and specific heat, $C$, are characteristic of an exchange-enhanced Fermi liquid ground state, which develops a slightly anisotropic spin gap $Δ\approx 220\,{\rm K}$ below $T_{\rm N}=88\,{\rm K}$. This observation is corroborated by the absence of a Curie dependence in the magnetization for $T\to0$ reported in the literature. Comparison of $C$ with $dρ_{\rm xx}/dT$, where we infer lattice contributions from measurements of VB$_2$, reveals strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations with a characteristic spin fluctuation temperature $T_{\rm sf}\approx 257\,{\rm K}$ in the paramagnetic state, followed by a pronounced second-order mean-field transition at $T_{\rm N}$, and unusual excitations around $\approx T_{\rm N}/2$. The pronounced anisotropy of $ρ_{\rm xx}$ above $T_{\rm N}$ is characteristic of an easy-plane anisotropy of the spin fluctuations consistent with the magnetization. The ratio of the Curie-Weiss to the N$\acute{\rm{e}}$el temperatures, $f=-Θ_{\rm CW}/T_{\rm N}\approx 8.5$, inferred from the magnetization, implies strong geometric frustration. All physical properties are remarkably invariant under applied magnetic fields up to $14\,\,{\rm T}$, the highest field studied. In contrast to earlier suggestions of local-moment magnetism our study identifies CrB$_{2}$ as a weak itinerant antiferromagnet par excellence with strong geometric frustration.

Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and single-crystal neutron scattering were used to study in detail the structural properties of the Cs2CuCl(4-x)Br(x) series, good realizations of layered triangular antiferromagnets. Detailed temperature-dependent PXRD reveal a pronounced anisotropy of the thermal expansion for the three different crystal directions of the orthorhombic structure without any structural phase transition down to 20 K. Remarkably, the anisotropy of the thermal expansion varies for different $x$, leading to distinct changes of the geometry of the local Cu environment as a function of temperature and composition. The refinement of the atomic positions confirms that for x=1 and 2, the Br atoms occupy distinct halogen sites in the [CuX4]-tetrahedra (X = Cl, Br). The precise structure data are used to calculate the magnetic exchange couplings using density functional methods for x=0. We observe a pronounced temperature dependence of the calculated magnetic exchange couplings, reflected in the strong sensitivity of the magnetic exchange couplings on structural details. These calculations are in good agreement with the experimentally established values for Cs2CuCl4 if one takes the low-temperature structure data as a starting point.

We report on spherical neutron polarimetry and unpolarized neutron diffraction in zero magnetic field as well as flip** ratio and static magnetization measurements in high magnetic fields on the multiferroic square lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$. We found that in zero magnetic field the magnetic space group is $Cm'm2'$ with sublattice magnetization parallel to the [100] axis of this orthorhombic setting. The spin canting has been found to be smaller than $0.2^\circ$ in the ground state. This assignment is in agreement with the field-induced changes of the magnetic domain structure below 40 mT as resolved by spherical neutron polarimetry. The magnitude of the ordered moment has been precisely determined. Above the magnetic ordering temperature short-range magnetic fluctuations are observed. Based on the high-field magnetization data, we refined the parameters of the recently proposed microscopic spin model describing the multiferroic phase of Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$.

We report the growth of large single-crystals of Cu2MnAl, a ferromagnetic Heusler compound suitable for polarizing neutron monochromators, by means of optical floating zone under ultra-high vacuum compatible conditions. Unlike Bridgman or Czochralsky grown Cu2MnAl, our floating zone grown single-crystals show highly reproducible magnetic properties and an excellent crystal quality with a narrow and homogeneous mosaic spread as examined by neutron diffraction. An investigation of the polarizing properties in neutron scattering suggests a high polarization efficiency, limited by the relatively small sample dimensions studied. Our study identifies optical floating zone under ultra-high vacuum compatible conditions as a highly reproducible method to grow high-quality single-crystals of Cu2MnAl.

In large magnetic fields we observe a magnetization plateau followed by a hysteretic metamagnetic transition. The temperature dependence of the coercive fields as well as the susceptibility calculated from the magnetization identify the metamagnetic transition as a line of first order transitions terminating in a critical endpoint at T*_m ~ 0.37 K, B*_m ~ 1.5 T. We have performed an extensive study of single-crystals of the magneto-electric NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$ by means of a combination of single-crystal neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarimetry. Our investigation did not detect significant deviations at low temperatures from space group R32 concerning the chemical structure. With respect to magnetic ordering our combined results demonstrate that in the commensurate magnetic phase below T$_N$~30 K all three magnetic Fe moments and the magnetic Nd moment are aligned ferromagnetically in the basal hexagonal plane but align antiferromagnetically between adjacent planes. The phase transition to the low-temperature incommensurate magnetic structure observed at T$_{IC}$~13.5 K appears to be continuous. By means of polarized neutron studies it could be shown that in the incommensurate magnetic phase the magnetic structure of NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$ is transformed into a long-period antiferromagnetic helix with single chirality. Close to the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition third-order harmonics were observed which in addition indicate the formation of magnetic solitons.

Among various parent compounds of iron pnictide superconductors, EuFe2As2 stands out due to the presence of both spin density wave of Fe and antiferromagnetic ordering (AFM) of the localized Eu2+ moment. Single crystal neutron diffraction studies have been carried out to determine the magnetic structure of this compound and to investigate the coupling of two magnetic sublattices. Long range AFM ordering of Fe and Eu spins was observed below 190 K and 19 K, respectively. The ordering of Fe2+ moments is associated with the wave vector k = (1,0,1) and it takes place at the same temperature as the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition, which indicates the strong coupling between structural and magnetic components. The ordering of Eu moment is associated with the wave vector k = (0,0,1). While both Fe and Eu spins are aligned along the long a axis as experimentally determined, our studies suggest a weak coupling between the Fe and Eu magnetism.

Neutron diffraction experiments have been carried out on a Sn-flux grown BaFe2As2 single crystal, the parent compound of the A-122 family of FeAs-based high-Tc superconductors. A tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition and a three dimensional long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of the iron moment, with a unique magnetic propagation wavevector k = (1, 0, 1), have been found to take place at ~90 K. The magnetic moments of iron are aligned along the long a axis in the low temperature orthorhombic phase (Fmmm with b<a<c). Our results thus demonstrate that the magnetic structure of BaFe2As2 single crystal is the same as those in other A-122 iron pnictides compounds. We argue that the tin incorporation in the lattice is responsible for a smaller orthorhombic splitting and lower Neel temperature T_N observed in the experiment.
