Despite the great attention devoted to the study of phase oscillators on complex networks in the last two decades, it remains unclear whether scale-free networks exhibit a nonzero critical coupling strength for the onset of synchronization in the thermodynamic limit. Here, we systematically compare predictions from the heterogeneous degree mean-field (HMF) and the quenched mean-field (QMF) approaches to extensive numerical simulations on large networks. We provide compelling evidence that the critical coupling vanishes as the number of oscillators increases for scale-free networks characterized by a power-law degree distribution with an exponent $2 < γ\leq 3$, in line with what has been observed for other dynamical processes in such networks. For $γ> 3$, we show that the critical coupling remains finite, in agreement with HMF calculations and highlight phenomenological differences between critical properties of phase oscillators and epidemic models on scale-free networks. Finally, we also discuss at length a key choice when studying synchronization phenomena in complex networks, namely, how to normalize the coupling between oscillators.

Though commonly found in the real world, directed networks have received relatively less attention from the literature in which concerns their topological and dynamical characteristics. In this work, we develop a magnetic Laplacian-based framework that can be used for studying directed complex networks. More specifically, we introduce a specific heat measurement that can help to characterize the network topology. It is shown that, by using this approach, it is possible to identify the types of several networks, as well as to infer parameters underlying specific network configurations. Then, we consider the dynamics associated with the magnetic Laplacian as a means of embedding networks into a metric space, allowing the identification of mesoscopic structures in artificial networks or unravel the polarization on political blogosphere. By defining a coarse-graining procedure in this metric space, we show how to connect the specific heat measurement and the positions of nodes in this space.

Real-world dynamics running on networks can be characterized in terms of their respective diversity, or heterogeneity of state values. Spatial networks can be understood as networks exhibiting limited small world characteristics. In the present work we argue that network spatiality can enhance the diversity of respectively unfolding dynamics. This also means that the small world property tends to reduce diversity. We illustrate this conjecture by simulating one type of Sznajd dynamics at the transient regime on Watts-Strogatz networks with varying rewiring levels. The obtained results show a marked reduction of state diversity as spatiality is replaced by the small world property.

Genetic algorithm (GA) is a stochastic metaheuristic process consisting on the evolution of a population of candidate solutions for a given optimization problem. By extension, multipopulation genetic algorithm (MPGA) aims for efficiency by evolving many populations, or islands, in parallel and performing migrations between them periodically. The connectivity between islands constrains the directions of migration and characterizes MPGA as a dynamic process over a network. As such, predicting the evolution of the quality of the solutions is a difficult challenge, implying in the waste of computer resources and energy when the parameters are inadequate. By using models derived from statistical mechanics, this work aims to estimate equations for the study of dynamics in relation to the connectivity in MPGA. To illustrate the importance of understanding MPGA, we show its application as an efficient alternative to the thermalization phase of Metropolis-Hastings algorithm applied to the Ising model.
