This paper presents an efficient equivalent circuit approach (ECA), based on a Floquet modal expansion, for the study of the co- and cross-polarization in frequency selective surfaces (FSS) formed by periodic arrays of patches/apertures in either single or stacked configurations. The ECA makes it possible the derivation of analytical expressions for the generalized scattering parameters associated with the proposed circuit networks. Furthermore, the proposed circuit approach is an efficient surrogate model that can be combined with optimization techniques and artificial intelligence algorithms for the efficient design of FSS structures, saving efforts in the computation compared to time-consuming full-wave simulators and tedious synthesis (simulation-assisted) techniques. Due to the simplicity of the topology of the involved networks, the ECA can also be advantageously used to gain physical insight. The proposed approach is applied and validated in different FSS configurations where the cross-pol component plays a fundamental role in the design, as in circular polarizers, polarization rotators, and reflectarray cells.

Many frequency selective surface (FSS) structures are based on the use of a single periodic array of slot/apertures in a conducting sheet embedded in a layered medium. However, it is well known that stacking several conducting sheets and breaking the alignment of the stack can bring multiple benefits to the structure. In this paper, the analysis and design of stacks of 2-D aperture arrays are carried out by exploiting as much as possible all the potentialities of a rigorous and systematic formulation based on the multi-modal equivalent circuit approach (ECA). A key feature of the formulation is that linear transformations between the apertures of adjacent plates (rotation, translation, and scaling) can be dealt with from a purely analytical perspective. This fact is of potential interest for many practical applications, such as the design of polarization converters, absorbers, filters, and thin matching layers. When the apertures have an arbitrary geometry, it can be applied a hybrid approach that combines the ability of commercial simulators to handle arbitrary geometries with the fast computation times and physical insight of the ECA. In general, either the purely analytical or the hybrid approach can be applied in those many practical scenarios where the spatial profile of the electric field on the considered apertures hardly changes with frequency. As an additional feature of the approach, the dispersion properties (phase/attenuation constants and Bloch impedance) of infinite periodic stacks can be derived and, in particular, analytical expressions for mirror- and glide-symmetric configurations are provided.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays an important role on improving soil conditions and soil functions. Increasing land use changes have induced an important decline of SOC content at global scale. Increasing SOC in agricultural soils has been proposed as a strategy to mitigate climate change. Animal manure has the characteristic of enriching SOC, when applied to crop fields, while, in parallel, it could constitute a natural fertilizer for the crops. In this paper, a simulation is performed using the area of Catalonia, Spain as a case study for the characteristic low SOC in the Mediterranean, to examine whether animal manure can improve substantially the SOC of agricultural fields, when applied as organic fertilizers. Our results show that the policy goals of the 4x1000 strategy can be achieved only partially by using manure transported to the fields. This implies that the proposed approach needs to be combined with other strategies.

This paper presents an efficient method to compute the dispersion diagram of periodic and uniform structures with generic anisotropic media. The method takes advantage of the ability of full-wave commercial simulators to deal with finite structures having anisotropic media. In particular, the proposed method extends the possibilities of commercial eigenmode solvers in the following ways: (i) anisotropic materials with non-diagonal permittivity and permeability tensors can be analyzed; (ii) the attenuation constant can easily be computed in both propagating and stopband regions and lossy materials can be included in the simulation; and (iii) unbounded and radiating structures such as leaky-wave antennas can be treated. The latter feature may be considered the most remarkable, since the structures must be forcefully bounded with electric/magnetic walls in the eigensolvers of most commercial simulators. In this work, the proposed method is particularized for the study of liquid crystals (LCs) in microwave and antenna devices. Thus, the dispersion properties of a great variety of LC-based configurations are analyzed, from canonical structures, such as waveguide and microstrip, to complex reconfigurable phase shifters in ridge gap-waveguide technology and leaky-wave antennas. Our results have been validated with previously reported works in the literature and with commercial software CST and HFSS.

This work presents an analysis of the functional derivative of the superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ with respect to the electron-phonon coupling function $α^2F(ω)$ [$δT_c/δα^2$F($ω$)] and $α^2F(ω)$ spectrum of H$_3$S ($Im\bar3m$), in the pressure range where the high-T$_c$ was measured (155-225 GPa). The calculations are done in the framework of the Migdal-Eliashberg theory. We find for this electron-phonon superconductor, a correlation between the maximums of $δT_c/δα^2$F($ω$) and $α^2F(ω)$ with its higher T$_c$. We corroborate this behavior in other electron-phonon superconductors by analyzing data available in the literature, which suggests its validity in this type of superconductors. The correlation observed could be considered as a theoretical tool that in an electron-phonon superconductor, allows describing qualitatively the proximity to its highest T$_c$, and determining the optimal physical conditions (pressure, alloying or do** concentration) that lead to the superconductor reaching its highest T$_c$ possible.

The resolution of the Green's function for obtaining the electrostatic potential generated by the charges located in the dielectric layer of a rectangular waveguide requires efficient integration techniques. Due to the characteristics and the oscillatory nature of the function to be integrated, the use of the Filon's method together with a convergence analysis is adequate. However, the application of this numerical integration technique can lead to numerical instabilities in the result. For this reason, in this research work we have presented two different methods to deal with these numerical errors of integration: SSA/MSSA and GPR. In this way it is possible to clean the electrostatic potential avoiding subsequent errors in the calculation of the electrostatic field.

The goal of this paper is to study the electrostatic field due to an arbitrary charge distribution on a dielectric layer in a dielectric-loaded rectangular waveguide. In order to obtain this electrostatic field, the potential due to a point charge on the dielectric layer is solved in advance. The high computational complexity of this problem requires the use of different numerical integration techniques (e.g. Filon, Gauss-Kronrod, Lobatto, ...) and interpolation methods. Using the principle of superposition, the potential due to an arbitrary charge distribution on a dielectric layer is obtained by adding the individual contribution of each point charge. Finally, a numerical differentiation of the potential is carried out to obtain the electrostatic field in the waveguide. The results of this electrostatic problem are going to be extended to model the multipactor effect, which is a problem of great interest in the space industry.

This letter presents a theoretical and experimental study on the viability of obtaining three dimensional super-resolution (i.e. resolution overcoming the diffraction limit for all directions in space) by means of metamaterial slab lenses. Although the source field cannot be actually reproduced at the back side of the lens with super-resolution in all space directions, the matching capabilities of metamaterial slabs does make it possible the detection of images with three-dimensional super-resolution. This imaging takes place because of the coupling between the evanescent space harmonic components of the field generated at both the source and the detector.
