The role of low-$x$ parton dynamics in dictating the high-energy behavior of forward scattering observables at LHC energies is investigated using a QCD-based model with even-under-crossing amplitude dominance at high-energies. We explore the effects of different sets of pre- and post-LHC fine-tuned parton distributions on the forward quantities $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$, from $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering in the interval 10 GeV - 13 TeV. We also investigate the role of the leading soft contribution, the low-energy cuttoff, and the energy dependence of the semihard form factor on these observables. We show that in all cases investigated the highly restrictive data on $ρ$ parameter at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV indicate that a crossing-odd component may play a crucial role in forward elastic scattering at the highest energies. In the Regge language an odd-under-crossing object is called Odderon.

Recently the TOTEM experiment at the LHC has released measurements at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV of the proton-proton total cross section, $σ_{tot}$, and the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the forward elastic amplitude, $ρ$. Since then an intense debate on the $C$-parity asymptotic nature of the scattering amplitude was initiated. We examine the proton-proton and the antiproton-proton forward data above 10 GeV in the context of an eikonal QCD-based model, where nonperturbative effects are readily included via a QCD effective charge. We show that, despite an overall satisfactory description of the forward data is obtained by a model in which the scattering amplitude is dominated by only crossing-even elastic terms, there is evidence that the introduction of a crossing-odd term may improve the agreement with the measurements of $ρ$ at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. In the Regge language the dominant even(odd)-under-crossing object is the so called Pomeron (Odderon).

Recent data from LHC13 by the TOTEM Collaboration have indicated an unexpected decrease in the value of the $ρ$ parameter and a $σ_{tot}$ value in agreement with the trend of previous measurements at 7 and 8 TeV. These data at 13 TeV are not simultaneously described by the predictions from Pomeron models selected by the COMPETE Collaboration, but show agreement with the maximal Odderon dominance, as recently demonstrated by Martynov and Nicolescu. Here we present a detailed analysis on the applicability of Pomeron dominance by means of a general class of forward scattering amplitude, consisting of even-under-crossing leading contributions associated with single, double and triple poles in the complex angular momentum plane. We carry out fits to $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ data in the interval 5 GeV - 13 TeV. The data set comprises all the accelerator data below 7 TeV and we consider two independent ensembles by adding either only the TOTEM data or TOTEM and ATLAS data at the LHC energy region. In the data reductions to each ensemble the uncertainty regions are evaluated with both one and two standard deviation ($\sim$ 68 \% and $\sim$ 95 \% CL, respectively). Besides the general analytic model, we investigate four particular cases of interest, three of them typical of outstanding models in the literature. We conclude that, within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties and both ensembles, the general model and three particular cases are not able to describe the $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ data at 13 TeV simultaneously. However, if the discrepancies between the TOTEM and ATLAS data are not resolved, one Pomeron model, associated with double and triple poles and with only 7 free parameters, seems not to be excluded by the complete set of experimental information presently available.

Recent data from LHC13 by the TOTEM Collaboration on $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ have indicated disagreement with all the Pomeron model predictions by the COMPETE Collaboration (2002). On the other hand, as recently demonstrated by Martynov and Nicolescu (MN), the new $σ_{tot}$ datum and the unexpected decrease in the $ρ$ value are well described by the maximal Odderon dominance at the highest energies. Here, we discuss the applicability of Pomeron dominance through fits to the \textit{most complete set} of forward data from $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering. We consider an analytic parametrization for $σ_{tot}(s)$ consisting of non-degenerated Regge trajectories for even and odd amplitudes (as in the MN analysis) and two Pomeron components associated with double and triple poles in the complex angular momentum plane. The $ρ$ parameter is analytically determined by means of dispersion relations. We carry out fits to $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ data on $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ in the interval 5 GeV - 13 TeV (as in the MN analysis). Two novel aspects of our analysis are: (1) the dataset comprises all the accelerator data below 7 TeV and we consider \textit{three independent ensembles} by adding: either only the TOTEM data (as in the MN analysis), or only the ATLAS data, or both sets; (2) in the data reductions to each ensemble, uncertainty regions are evaluated through error propagation from the fit parameters, with 90 \% CL. We argument that, within the uncertainties, this analytic model corresponding to soft Pomeron dominance, does not seem to be excluded by the \textit{complete} set of experimental data presently available.

The recent data by the TOTEM Collaboration on $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ at 13 TeV, have shown agreement with a leading Odderon contribution at the highest energies, as demonstrated in the very recent analysis by Martynov and Nicolescu (MN). In order to investigate the same dataset by means of Pomeron dominance, we introduce a general class of forward scattering amplitude, with leading contributions even under crossing, associated with simple, double and triple poles in the complex angular momentum plane. For the lower energy region, we consider the usual non-degenerated Regge trajectories, with even and odd symmetry. The analytic connection between $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ is obtained by means of dispersion relations and we carry out fits to $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ data in the interval $\sqrt{s}=5$ GeV - 13 TeV; following MN we consider only the TOTEM data at the LHC energy region. From the fits, we conclude that the general analytic model, as well as some particular cases representing standard parameterizations, are not able to describe satisfactorily the $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ data at 13 TeV. Further analyses in course and some perspectives are outlined.

The Deep Learning (DL) community sees many novel topologies published each year. Achieving high performance on each new topology remains challenging, as each requires some level of manual effort. This issue is compounded by the proliferation of frameworks and hardware platforms. The current approach, which we call "direct optimization", requires deep changes within each framework to improve the training performance for each hardware backend (CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, ASICs) and requires $\mathcal{O}(fp)$ effort; where $f$ is the number of frameworks and $p$ is the number of platforms. While optimized kernels for deep-learning primitives are provided via libraries like Intel Math Kernel Library for Deep Neural Networks (MKL-DNN), there are several compiler-inspired ways in which performance can be further optimized. Building on our experience creating neon (a fast deep learning library on GPUs), we developed Intel nGraph, a soon to be open-sourced C++ library to simplify the realization of optimized deep learning performance across frameworks and hardware platforms. Initially-supported frameworks include TensorFlow, MXNet, and Intel neon framework. Initial backends are Intel Architecture CPUs (CPU), the Intel(R) Nervana Neural Network Processor(R) (NNP), and NVIDIA GPUs. Currently supported compiler optimizations include efficient memory management and data layout abstraction. In this paper, we describe our overall architecture and its core components. In the future, we envision extending nGraph API support to a wider range of frameworks, hardware (including FPGAs and ASICs), and compiler optimizations (training versus inference optimizations, multi-node and multi-device scaling via efficient sub-graph partitioning, and HW-specific compounding of operations).

In high-energy hadron-hadron collisions, the dependence of the total cross-section ($σ_{tot}$) with the energy still constitutes an open problem for QCD. Phenomenological analyses usually relies on analytic parameterizations provided by the Regge-Gribov formalism and fits to the experimental data. In this framework, the singularities of the scattering amplitude in the complex angular momentum plane determine the asymptotic behavior of $σ_{tot}$ in terms of the energy. Usual applications connect simple and triple pole singularities with asymptotic power and logarithmic-squared functions of the energy, respectively. More restrict applications have considered as a leading component for $σ_{tot}$ an empirical function consisting of a logarithmic raised to a real exponent, which is treated as a free fit parameter. With this function, data reductions lead to good descriptions of the experimental data and real (not integer) values of the exponent. In this paper, making use of two independent formalisms (fractional calculus and Mellin transform), we first show that the singularity associated with this empirical function is a branch point and then we explore the mathematical consequences of the result and possible physical interpretations. After reviewing the determination of the singularities from asymptotic forms of interest through the Mellin transform, we demonstrate that the same analytic results can be obtained by means of the Caputo fractional derivative, leading, therefore, to fractional calculus interpretations. Besides correlating Mellin transform, non-local fractional derivatives and exploring the generalization from integer to real exponents and derivative orders, this fractional calculus result may provide insights for physical interpretations on the asymptotic rise of $σ_{tot}$.

Forward amplitude analyses constitute an important approach in the investigation of the energy dependence of the total hadronic cross-section $σ_{tot}$ and the $ρ$ parameter. The standard picture indicates for $σ_{tot}$ a leading log-squared dependence at the highest c.m. energies, in accordance with the Froissart-Lukaszuk-Martin bound. Beyond this log-squared (L2) leading dependence, other amplitude analyses have considered a log-raised-to-gamma form (L$γ$), with $γ$ as a real free fit parameter. In this case, analytic connections with $ρ$ can be obtained either through dispersion relations (derivative forms), or asymptotic uniqueness (Phragmén-Lindelöff theorems). In this work we present a detailed discussion on the similarities and mainly the differences between the Derivative Dispersion Relation (DDR) and Asymptotic Uniqueness (AU) approaches and results, with focus on the L$γ$ and L2 leading terms. We also develop new Regge-Gribov fits with updated dataset on $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ from $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering, in the region 5 GeV-8 TeV. The recent tension between the TOTEM and ATLAS results at 7 TeV and mainly 8 TeV is considered in the data reductions. Our main conclusions are: (1) all fit results present agreement with the experimental data analyzed and the goodness-of-fit is slightly better in case of the DDR approach; (2) by considering only the TOTEM data at the LHC region, the fits with L$γ$ indicate $γ\sim 2.0\pm 0.2$ (AU) and $γ\sim 2.3\pm 0.1$ (DDR); (3) by including the ATLAS data the fits provide $γ\sim 1.9\pm 0.1$ (AU) and $γ\sim 2.2\pm 0.2$ (DDR); (4) in the formal and practical contexts, the DDR approach is more adequate for the energy interval investigated than the AU approach. A review on the analytic results for $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ from the Regge-Gribov, DDR and AU approaches is presented.

The dataset comprises all the accelerator data below 7 TeV and we consider three ensembles by adding: either only the TOTEM data (T), or only the ATLAS data (A), or both sets (T+A). For the purposes, we use our previous RRPL$γ$ parametrization for $σ_{tot}(s)$, consisting of two Reggeons (RR), one critical Pomeron (P) and a leading log-raised-to-gamma (L$γ$) contribution (with $γ$ as a free fit parameter), analytically connected to $ρ(s)$ through singly-subtracted derivative dispersion relations and energy scale fixed at the physical threshold. The data reductions with ensembles T and A present good agreement with the experimental data analyzed and cannot be distinguished on statistical grounds. The quality of the fit is not as good with ensemble T+A. The fit results provide $γ\sim 2.3 \pm 0.1$ (T), $2.0 \pm 0.2$ (A), $2.1 \pm 0.2$ (T+A), with $χ^2/\mathrm{DOF} \sim 1.07$ (T), $1.09$ (A), $1.14$ (T+A), suggesting extrema bounds for $γ$ given by 1.8 and 2.4. In the absence of a global description of the experimental data on elastic and soft diffractive scattering from the first principles of QCD, model-independent analyses may provide useful phenomenological insights for the development of the theory in the soft sector. With that in mind, we present an empirical study on the energy dependence of the ratio $X$ between the elastic and total cross sections; a quantity related to the evolution of the hadronic central opacity. The dataset comprises all the experimental information available on proton-proton and antiproton-proton scattering in the c.m. energy interval 5 GeV - 8 TeV. Generalizing previous works, we discuss four model-independent analytical parameterizations for $X$, consisting of sigmoid functions composed with elementary functions of the energy and three distinct asymptotic scenarios: either the standard black disk limit or scenarios above or below that limit. Our two main conclusions are the following: (1) although consistent with the experimental data, the black disk does not represent an unique solution; (2) the data reductions favor a semi-transparent scenario, with asymptotic average value for the ratio $\bar{X}$ = 0.30 $\pm$ 0.12. In this case, within the uncertainty, the asymptotic regime may already be reached around 1000 TeV. We present a comparative study of the two scenarios, including predictions for the inelastic channel (diffraction dissociation) and the ratio associated with the total cross-section and the elastic slope. Details on the selection of our empirical ansatz for $X$ and physical aspects related to a change of curvature in this quantity at 80 - 100 GeV, indicating the beginning of a saturation effect, are also presented and discussed.

A comparative study on some representative parametrizations for the total and elastic cross-sections as a function of energy is presented. The dataset comprises pp and \bar{p}p scattering in the c.m energy interval 5 GeV-8 TeV. The parametrization for the total cross-section at low and intermediate energies follows the usual reggeonic structure (non-degenerate trajectories). For the leading high-energy pomeron contribution, we consider three distinct analytic parametrizations: either a power (P) law, or a log-squared (L2) law or a log-raised-to-gamma (Lgamma) law, where the exponent gamma is treated as a real free fit parameter. The parametrizations are also extended to fit the elastic (integrated) cross-section data in the same energy interval. Our main conclusions are the following: the data reductions with the logarithmic laws show strong dependence on the unknown energy scale involved, which is treated here either as a free parameter or fixed at the energy threshold; the fit results with the P law, the L2 law (free scale) and the Lgamma law (fixed scale and exponent gamma above 2) are all consistent within their uncertainties and with the experimental data up to 7 TeV, but they partially underestimate the high-precision TOTEM measurement at 8 TeV; once compared with these results, the L2 law with fixed scale is less consistent with the data and, in the case of a free scale, this pomeron contribution decreases as the energy increases below the scale factor (which lies above the energy cutoff); in all cases investigated, the predictions for the asymptotic ratio between the elastic and total cross-sections, within the uncertainties, do not exceed the value 0.430 (therefore, below the black-disc limit) and the results favor rational limits between 1/3 and 2/5. We are led to conclude that the rise of the hadronic cross-sections at the highest energies still constitutes an open problem.

A forward amplitude analysis on $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ elastic scattering above 5 GeV is presented. The dataset includes the recent high-precision TOTEM measurements of the $pp$ total and elastic (integrated) cross-sections at 7 TeV and 8 TeV. Following previous works, the leading high-energy contribution for the total cross-section ($σ_{tot}$) is parametrized as $\ln^γ(s/s_h)$, where $γ$ and $s_h$ are free \textit{real} fit parameters. Singly-subtracted derivative dispersion relations are used to connect $σ_{tot}$ and the rho parameter ($ρ$) in an analytical way. Different fit procedures are considered, including individual fits to $σ_{tot}$ data, global fits to $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$ data, constrained and unconstrained data reductions. The results favor a rise of the $σ_{tot}$ faster than the log-squared bound by Froissart and Martin at the LHC energy region. The parametrization for $σ_{tot}$ is extended to fit the elastic cross-section ($σ_{el}$) data with satisfactory results. The analysis indicates an asymptotic ratio $σ_{el}/σ_{tot}$ consistent with 1/3 (as already obtained in a previous work). A critical discussion on the correlation, practical role and physical implications of the parameters $γ$ and $s_h$ is presented. The discussion confronts the 2002 prediction of $σ_{tot}$ by the COMPETE Collaboration and the recent result by the Particle Data Group (2012 edition of the Review of Particle Physics). Some conjectures on possible implications of a fast rise of the proton-proton total cross-section at the highest energies are also presented.

The rise of the total, elastic and inelastic hadronic cross sections at high energies is investigated by means of an analytical parametrization, with the exponent of the leading logarithm contribution as a free fit parameter. Using derivative dispersion relations with one subtraction, two different fits to proton-proton and antiproton-proton total cross section and rho parameter data are developed, reproducing well the experimental information in the energy region 5 GeV - 7 TeV. The parametrization for the total cross sections is then extended to fit the elastic (integrated) cross section data in the same energy region, with satisfactory results. From these empirical results we extract the energy dependence of several physical quantities: inelastic cross section, ratios elastic/total, inelastic/total cross sections, ratio total-cross-section/elastic-slope, elastic slope and optical point. All data, fitted and predicted, are quite well described. We find a statistically consistent solution indicating: (1) an increase of the hadronic cross sections with the energy faster than the log-squared bound by Froissart and Martin; (2) asymptotic limits 1/3 and 2/3 for the ratios elastic/total and inelastic/total cross sections, respectively, a result in agreement with unitarity. These indications corroborate recent theoretical arguments by Ya. I. Azimov on the rise of the total cross section.

Abstract:
We show that the proton-proton elastic differential cross section data at dip position and beyond can be quite well described by a parametrization based on the Tsallis distribution, with only five free fit parameters. Extrapolation of the results obtained at 7 TeV to large momentum transfer, suggests that hadrons may not behave as a black-disk at the asymptotic energy region.

An almost model-independent parametrization for the ratio of the total cross section to the elastic slope, as function of the center of mass energy, is introduced. The analytical result is based on the approximate relation of this quantity with the ratio $R$ of the elastic to total cross section and empirical fits to the $R$ data from proton-proton scattering above 10 GeV, under the conditions of asymptotic unitarity and the black-disk limit. This parametrization may be useful in studies of extensive air showers and the determination of the proton-proton total cross section from proton-air production cross section in cosmic-ray experiments.

The energy dependence of the total hadronic cross section at high energies is investigated with focus on the recent experimental result by the TOTEM Collaboration at 7 TeV and the Froissart-Martin bound. On the basis of a class of analytical parametrization with the exponent $γ$ in the leading logarithm contribution as a free parameter, different variants of fits to $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ total cross section data above 5 GeV are developed. Two ensembles are considered, the first comprising data up to 1.8 TeV, the second also including the data collected at 7 TeV. We shown that in all fit variants applied to the first ensemble the exponent is statistically consistent with $γ$ = 2. Applied to the second ensemble, however, the same variants yield $γ$'s above 2, a result already obtained in two other analysis, by U. Amaldi \textit{et al}. and by the UA4/2 Collaboration. As recently discussed by Ya. I. Azimov, this faster-than-squared-logarithm rise does not necessarily violate unitarity. Our results suggest that the energy dependence of the hadronic total cross section at high energies still constitute an open problem.

In the framework of a dynamical gluon mass model recently developed, we investigate the effects of two essential parameters in the description of elastic $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ data at high energies: the soft Pomeron intercept and the dynamical gluon mass. By considering relevant numerical intervals for both parameters and fits to the experimental data up to 1.8 TeV, with good statistical results, we discuss the predictions of the physical quantities at the LHC energies (7 and 14 TeV). We conclude that these quantities are sensitive to those variations and the predictions are correlated with the intervals considered for both parameters. This conclusion puts limits on the reliability of QCD inspired models predictions at the LHC energies, mainly those models with ad hoc fixed values for the mass scale and the Pomeron intercept.

Using a novel representation for the Martin's real-part formula without the full scaling property, an almost model-independent description of the proton-proton differential cross section data at high energies (19.4 GeV - 62.5 GeV) is obtained. In the impact parameter and eikonal frameworks, the extracted inelastic overlap function presents a peripheral effect (tail) above 2 fm and the extracted opacity function is characterized by a zero (change of sign) in the momentum transfer space, confirming results from previous model-independent analyses. Analytical parametrization for these empirical results are introduced and discussed. The importance of investigations on the inverse problems in high-energy elastic hadron scattering is stressed and the relevance of the proposed representation is commented. The usefulness of the recent experimentally realized six photon cluster state by C. Y. Lu et al. (2007, Nature {3} {91}), is investigated for quantum communication protocols like teleportation, quantum information splitting (QIS), remote state preparation and dense coding. We show that the present state can be used for the teleportation of an arbitrary two qubit state deterministically. Later we devise two distinct protocols for the QIS of an arbitrary two qubit state among two parties and systematically compare their relative merits in terms of classical communication and security. Sixteen orthogonal measurement basis on the cluster state is constructed, which will lock an arbitrary two qubit state among two parties. The usefulness of the state for dense coding is investigated and it is shown that one can send five classical bits by sending only three qubits using this state as a shared entangled resource. We finally show that this state can also be utilised in the remote state preparation of an arbitrary two qubit state.

By means of improved empirical fits to the differential cross section data on $pp$ elastic scattering at $19.4 \le\sqrt{s}\le 62.5$ GeV and making use of a semi-analytical method, we determine the eikonal in the momentum transfer space (the inverse scattering problem). This method allows the propagation of the uncertainties from the fit parameters up to the extracted eikonal, providing statistical evidence that the imaginary part of the eikonal (real part of the opacity function) presents a zero (change of signal) in the momentum space, at $q^2 \approx 7 \pm 1$ GeV$^2$. We discuss the implication of this change of signal in the phenomenological context, showing that eikonal models with one zero provide good descriptions of the differential cross sections in the full momentum transfer range, but that is not the case for models without zero. Empirical connections between the extracted eikonal and results from a recent global analysis on the proton electric form factor are also discussed, in special the Wu-Yang conjecture. In addition, we present a critical review on the $pp$ differential cross section data presently available at high energies.

In order to study the properties of $J/ψ$ (1S) in the deconfining medium, we extend our previous formalism [Phys. Lett. B {\bf 656}, 45 (2007)] on $J/ψ$ suppression at mid-rapidity using the colour screening framework. Our formalism is more general as the complete rapidity, transverse momentum and centrality dependence including $J/ψ$ suppression at forward as well as mid-rapidity can be computed directly from it. Careful attention is paid to the role of the medium's proper time in determining the locus of the screening region where $J/ψ$ gets suppressed. Other important ingredients in the calculation are bag model equation of state for QGP, the longitudinal expansion of the QGP fluid obeying Bjorken's boost invariant scaling law and non-sequential/sequential melting of $χ_c$ (1P) as well as $ψ^{'}$ (2S) higher resonances. Upon comparison with the recent data of PHENIX collaboration on $J/ψ$ suppression at forward and mid-rapidity regions, we find that our model shows a reasonable agreement with the data without incorporating any sequential decay mechanism of higher charmonia states. Furthermore, we observe a larger suppression at forward rapidity in our model which is again well supported by the PHENIX data and also gives a hint that a scenario based on directly produced $J/ψ$'s is preferable.

We assume that the QGP dense medium is expanding in the longitudinal direction obeying Bjorken boost invariant scaling law. Sequential melting of $χ_c$, $ψ^{'}$ and $J/ψ$ is also considered in this scenario. We have applied above formulation to the recent PHENIX experimental data of $J/ψ$ suppression in Au + Au collisions at RHIC. We find that the model gives a good description of data at mid-rapidity in terms of survival probability versus number of participants without any necessity of implementing (3+1)-dimensional expansion of the deconfined medium.

A novel type of partial wave {\em interference} mechanism is found to operate in the formula of $<\tildeΓ>$. Nonrelativistic longitudinal expansion fro small length of the initial cylinder is found to push the $S(p_T)$ graph above the no flow case considered by us earlier \cite{rev1}. However, relativistic flow corresponding to large length of the initial cylinder pushes the curve of $S(p_T)$ downwards at LHC but upwards at RHIC. This mutually different effect on $S(p_T)$ may be attributed to the different initial temperatures generated at LHC and RHIC.

Based on the behavior of the elastic scattering data, we introduce an almost model-independent parametrization for the imaginary part of the scattering amplitude, with the energy and momentum transfer dependences inferred on empirical basis and selected by rigorous theorems and bounds from axiomatic quantum field theory. The corresponding real part is analytically evaluated by means of dispersion relations, allowing connections between particle-particle and particle-antiparticle scattering. Simultaneous fits to proton-proton and antiproton-proton experimental data in the forward direction and also including data beyond the forward direction, lead to a predictive formalism in both energy and momentum transfer. We compare our extrapolations with predictions from some popular models and discuss the applicability of the results in the normalization of elastic rates that can be extracted from present and future accelerator experiments (Tevatron, RHIC and LHC).

Here we apply that formulation to the case when the medium is undergoing cylindrically symmetric {\it transverse} expansion starting from RHIC or LHC initial conditions. Our algebraic and numerical estimates demonstrate that the transverse expansion causes enhancement of local gluon number density $ŋ$, affects the $\pt$-dependence of the average dissociation rate $\tilg$ through a partial-wave interference mechanism, and makes the survival probability $\spt$ to change with $\pt$ very slowly. Compared to the previous case of longitudinal expansion the new graph of $\spt$ is pushed up at LHC, but develops a rich structure at RHIC, due to a competition between the transverse catch-up time and plasma lifetime.

We first demonstrate that, for a class of functions with physical interest as forward scattering amplitudes, this replacement can be analytically performed, leading to novel Extended Derivative Dispersion Relations (EDDR), which, in principle, are valid for any energy above the physical threshold. We then verify the equivalence between the IDR and EDDR by means of a popular parametrization for total cross sections from proton-proton and antiproton-proton scattering and compare the results with those obtained through other representations for the derivative relations. Critical aspects on the limitations of the whole analysis, from both formal and practical points of view, are also discussed in some detail.

We compute the tree level cross section for gluon-gluon elastic scattering taking into account a dynamical gluon mass, and show that this mass scale is a natural regulator for this subprocess cross section. Using an eikonal approach in order to examine the relationship between this gluon-gluon scattering and the elastic $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ channels, we found that the dynamical gluon mass is of the same order of magnitude as the {\it ad hoc} infrared mass scale $m_{0}$ underlying eikonalized QCD-inspired models. We argue that this correspondence is not an accidental result, and that this dynamical scale indeed represents the onset of non-perturbative contributions to the elastic hadron-hadron scattering. We apply the eikonal model with a dynamical infrared mass scale to obtain predictions for $σ_{tot}^{pp,\bar{p}p}$, $ρ^{pp,\bar{p}p}$, slope $B^{pp,\bar{p}p}$, and differential elastic scattering cross section $dσ^{\bar{p}p}/dt$ at Tevatron and CERN-LHC energies.

In both cases we extend the analysis to $baryon-p$, $meson-p$, $baryon-n$, $meson-n$, $gamma-p$ and $gamma-gamma$ scattering, presenting tests on factorization and quark counting rules. We show that in all the cases investigated, the bounds lead to good descriptions of the bulk of experimental data on the total cross sections, but with different extrapolations to higher energies. Our main conclusion is that the experimental information presently available on the above quantities is not sensitive to an uncertainty of 2% in the value of the soft Pomeron intercept. At 14 TeV (CERN LHC) the extrema and constrained bounds allow to infer $σ_{tot}$ = 114 $\pm$ 25 mb and 105 $\pm$ 10 mb, respectively.

Abstract:

We revisit the standard treatment [Xu, Kharzeev, Satz and Wang, Phys. Rev. C {\bf 53}, 3051 (1996)] of $J/ψ$ suppression due to gluonic bombardment in an equilibrating quark-gluon plasma. Effects arising from gluon fugacity, relative $g-ψ$ flux, and $ψ$ meson formation time are correctly incorporated in the formulation of the gluon number density, velocity-weighted cross section, and the survival probability. Our new formulae are applied to numerically study the pattern of $J/ψ$ suppression in the central rapidity region at RHIC/LHC energies. The temperature and transverse momentum dependence of our graphs have noticeable differences from those of Xu et al.

By means of empirical fits to the differential cross section data on pp and p(bar)p elastic scattering, above 10 GeV (center-of-mass energy), we determine the eikonal in the momentum - transfer space (q^2- space). We make use of a numerical method and a novel semi-analytical method, through which the uncertainties from the fit parameters can be propagated up to the eikonal in the $q^2$- space. A systematic study of the effect of the experimental information at large values of the momentum transfer is developed and discussed in detail. We present statistical evidence that the imaginary part of the eikonal changes sign in the q^2- space and that the position of the zero decreases as the energy increases; after the position of the zero, the eikonal presents a minimum and then goes to zero through negative values. We discuss the applicability of our results in the phenomenological context, outlining some connections with nonperturbative QCD. A short review and a critical discussion on the main results concerning "model-independent" analyses are also presented.

We discuss some formal and fundamental aspects related with the replacement of integral dispersion relations by derivative forms, and their practical uses in high energy elastic hadron scattering, in particular $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering. Starting with integral relations with one subtraction and considering parametrizations for the total cross sections belonging to the class of entire functions in the logarithm of the energy, a series of results is deduced and our main conclusions are the following: (1) except for the subtraction constant, the derivative forms do not depend on any additional free parameter; (2) the only approximation in going from integral to derivative relations (at high energies) concerns to assume as zero the lower limit in the integral form; (3) the previous approximation and the subtraction constant affect the fit results at both low and high energies and therefore, the subtraction constant can not be disregarded; (4) from a practical point of view, for single-pole Pomeron and secondary reggeons parametrizations and center-of-mass energies above 5 GeV, the derivative relations with the subtraction constant as a free fit parameter are completely equivalent to the integral forms with finite (non-zero) lower limit. A detailed review on the conditions of validity and assumptions related with the replacement of integral by derivative relations is also presented and discussed.

Making use of the Stochastic Vacuum Model and the gluon gauge-invariant two-point correlation function, determined by numerical simulation on the lattice in both quenched approximation and full QCD, we calculate the elementary (quark-quark) scattering amplitudes in the momentum transfer space and at asymptotic energies. Our main conclusions are the following: (1) the amplitudes decrease monotonically as the momentum transfer increases; (2) the decreasing is faster when going from quenched approximation to full QCD (with decreasing quark masses) and this effect is associated with the increase of the correlation lengths; (3) dynamical fermions generate two components in the amplitude at small momentum transfer and the transition between them occurs at momentum transfer near 1 GeV$^2$. We also obtain analytical parametrizations for the elementary amplitudes, that are suitable for phenomenological uses, and discuss the effects of extrapolations from the physical regions investigated in the lattice.

First we consider two ensembles of data with either the CDF or the E710 and E811 results for the p(bar)p total cross section at 1.8 TeV, from which we obtain the bounds 1.102 and 1.081, respectively. These ensembles are then combined with the highest and lowest estimations for the pp total cross section from cosmic-ray experiments (6-40 TeV), leading to the upper and lower bounds 1.109 and 1.082, respectively. The effects of simultaneous fits to total cross sections and the rho parameter, individual fits to total cross sections, and the influence of the subtraction constant in the dispersion relations are also presented. Our global results favor the E710 and E811 data.

Analytic models for hadron-hadron scattering are characterized by analytical parametrizations for the forward amplitudes and the use of dispersion relation techniques to study the total cross section $σ_{tot}$ and the $ρ$ parameter. In this paper we investigate four aspects related to the application of the model to $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering, from accelerator to cosmic-ray energies: 1) the effect of different estimations for $σ_{tot}$ from cosmic-ray experiments; 2) the differences between individual and global (simultaneous) fits to $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ$; 3) the role of the subtraction constant in the dispersion relations; 4) the effect of distinct asymptotic inputs from different analytic models. This is done by using as a framework the single Pomeron and the maximal Odderon parametrizations for the total cross section. Our main conclusions are the following: 1) Despite the small influence from different cosmic-ray estimations, the results allow us to extract an upper bound for the soft pomeron intercept: $1 + ε= 1.094$; 2) although global fits present good statistical results, in general, this procedure constrains the rise of $σ_{tot}$; 3) the subtraction constant as a free parameter affects the fit results at both low and high energies; 4) independently of the cosmic-ray information used and the subtraction constant, global fits with the odderon parametrization predict that, above $\sqrt s \approx 70$ GeV, $ρ_{pp}(s)$ becomes greater than $ρ_{\bar{p}p}(s)$, and this result is in complete agreement with all the data presently available. In particular, we infer $ρ_{pp} = 0.134 \pm 0.005$ at $\sqrt s = 200$ GeV and $0.151 \pm 0.007$ at 500 GeV (BNL RHIC energies).

We present the results of several parametrizations to two different ensemble of data on $pp$ total cross sections $σ_{tot}^{pp}$ at the highest center-of-mass energies (including cosmic-ray information). The results are statistically consistent with two distinct scenarios at high energies. From one ensemble the prediction for the LHC ($\sqrt s = 14$ TeV) is $σ_{tot}^{pp} = 113 \pm 5$ mb and from the other, $σ_{tot}^{pp}=140 \pm 7$ mb. From each parametrization, and making use of derivative analyticity relations (DAR), we determine $ρ(s)$ (ratio between the forward real and imaginary parts of the elastic scattering amplitude). A discussion on the optimization of the DAR in terms of a free parameter is also presented. In all cases good descriptions of the experimental data are obtained.
