Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8 realizes an original anisotropic kagome model hosting a rich magnetic phase diagram [M. Hering et al, npj Computational Materials 8, 1 (2022)]. We present an improved synthesis of large phase-pure single crystals via an external gradient method. These crystals were investigated in details by susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, neutron scattering and local muSR and NMR techniques. At variance with polycristalline samples, the study of single crystals gives evidence for subtle structural instabilities at 33K and 13K which preserve the global symmetry of the system and thus the magnetic model. At 2.1K the compound shows a magnetic transition to a coplanar (1/3,1/3) long range order as predicted theoretically. However our analysis of the spin wave excitations yields magnetic interactions which locate the compound closer to the phase boundary to a classical jammed spin liquid phase. Enhanced quantum fluctuations at this boundary may be responsible for the strongly reduced ordered moment of the Cu2+, estimated to be 0.075muB from muSR.

We report thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of herbertsmithite, over a wide range of temperatures (0.05-120 K) in magnetic fields up to 15 T. We also report measurements of the thermal Hall effect, found to be vanishingly small. At high temperatures, in the paramagnetic regime, the thermal conductivity has a negligible field dependence. Upon cooling and the development of correlations, the onset of a clear monotonic field dependence below about 20 K signals a new characteristic temperature scale that may reflect the subtle crossover towards the quantum spin liquid regime. Deconfined spinons, if present, are not detected and phonons, as the main carriers of heat, are strongly scattered by the intrinsic spin excitations and the magnetic defects. In view of the colossal fields required to affect the intrinsic spins, most of the field-induced evolution is attributed to the progressive polarization of some magnetic defects. By elaborating a phenomenological model, we extract the magnetization of these main scattering centers which does not resemble the Brillouin function for free spins 1/2, requiring to go beyond the paradigm of isolated paramagnetic spins. Besides, the onset of a nonmonotonic field dependence below about 2 K underlines the existence of another characteristic temperature scale, previously highlighted with other measurements, and sheds new light on the phase diagram of herbertsmithite down to the lowest temperatures.

Measuring the specific heat of herbertsmithite single crystals in high magnetic fields (up to $34$ T) allows us to isolate the low-temperature kagome contribution while shifting away extrinsic Schottky-like contributions. Measuring the specific heat of herbertsmithite single crystals in high magnetic fields (up to $34$ T) allows us to isolate the low-temperature kagome contribution while shifting away extrinsic Schottky-like contributions. The kagome contribution follows an original power law $C_{p}(T\rightarrow0)\propto T^α$ with $α\sim1.5$ and is found field-independent between $28$ and $34$ T for temperatures $1\leq T\leq4$ K. These are serious constrains when it comes to replication using low-temperature extrapolations of high-temperature series expansions. We manage to reproduce the experimental observations if about $10$ % of the kagome sites do not contribute. Between $0$ and $34$ T, the computed specific heat has a minute field dependence then supporting an algebraic temperature dependence in zero field, typical of a critical spin liquid ground state. The need for an effective dilution of the kagome planes is discussed and is likely linked to the presence of copper ions on the interplane zinc sites. At very low temperatures and moderate fields, we also report some small field-induced anomalies in the total specific heat and start to elaborate a phase diagram.

This compound undergoes a clear magnetic transition at $T_{\rm N} \simeq 22.5$~K, as seen from the drop in the muon paramagnetic fraction and concurrent anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. Local probes (NMR and $μ$SR) reveal a broad regime with slow fluctuations down to $0.7\,T_{\rm N}$, this temperature corresponding to the maximum in the $μ$SR relaxation rate and in the NMR wipe-out. From the comparison with NaCrO$_{2}$ and $α$-KCrO$_{2}$, the fluctuating regime and slow dynamics below $T_{\rm N}$ appear to be hallmarks of the TLHAF with $ABC$ stacking that leads to a frustration of interlayer couplings between the triangular planes. This interlayer frustration is a powerful lever to generate spin states with persistent dynamics and may bear implications to spin-liquid candidates with the triangular geometry.

An antiferromagnetic-type order sets in at $T_{\rm N}=1.3$ K and a characteristic magnetization plateau is observed at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization below $T^* \sim 5$ K. A moderate $^{31}$P NMR line broadening reveals the development of anisotropic short-range correlations within the plateau phase concomitantly with a gapless spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1 \sim k_B T / \hbar S$, which both point to the presence of a semiclassical nematic spin liquid state predicted for the Heisenberg kagomé antiferromagnetic model or to the persistence of the zero-energy modes of the kagome lattice under large magnetic fields.

Throughout the studied temperature range, the susceptibility is consistent with a semimetal behavior, though with electronic bands substantially modified by correlations. Remarkably, the antiferromagnetic fluctuations present in the insulating parent compound Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ survive in the studied compound. The spin dynamics are consistent with 120$^o$ excitations modes displaying short-range correlations.

Spin liquids are exotic phases of quantum matter challenging Landau's paradigm of symmetry-breaking phase transitions. Despite strong exchange interactions, spins do not order or freeze down to zero temperature. While well-established for 1D quantum antiferromagnets, in higher dimension where quantum fluctuations are less acute, realizing and understanding such states represent major issues, both theoretical and experimental. In this respect the simplest nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet Hamiltonian on the highly frustrated kagome lattice has proven to be a fascinating and inspiring model. The exact nature of its ground state remains elusive and the existence of a spin-gap is the first key-issue to be addressed to discriminate between the various classes of proposed spin liquids. Here, through low-temperature Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) contrast experiments on high quality single crystals, we single out the kagome susceptibility and the corresponding dynamics in the kagome archetype, the mineral herbertsmithite, ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$. We firmly conclude that this material does not harbor any spin-gap, which restores a convergence with recent numerical results promoting a gapless Dirac spin liquid as the ground state of the Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnet.

The quantum kagome antiferromagnets YCu3(OH)6OxCl3-x (x=0,1/3) are produced using a unified solid state synthesis route for polycrystalline samples. From structural refinements based on neutron diffraction data, we clarify the structure of the Y3Cu9(OH)18OCl8 (x=1/3) compound and provide a revised chemical formula. We use muon spin relaxation, as a local probe of magnetism, to investigate the exotic low temperature properties in the two compounds. In agreement with the low temperature neutron diffraction data, we find no evidence for long range ordering in both materials but they exhibit distinct ground states: while disordered static magnetism develops in the x=0 compound, we conclude on the stabilization of a quantum spin liquid in the x=1/3 one, since the local fields remain fully dynamical. Our findings are in contrast to previous reports based on thermodynamical measurements only. We then discuss their origin on the basis of structural details and specific heat measurements. In particular, the x=1/3 compound appears to realize an original spatially anisotropic kagome model.

We report on a detailed neutron diffraction and $^1$H-NMR study on the frustrated spin-1/2 chain material linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, where competing ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor interactions lead to frustration. From the magnetic Bragg peak intensity studied down to 60 mK, the magnetic moment per Cu atom is obtained within the whole magnetic phase diagram for $H \parallel b$ axis. Further, we establish the detailed configurations of the shift of the SDW propagation vector in phase V with field and temperature. Finally, combining our neutron diffraction results with those from a low-temperature/high-field NMR study we find an even more complex phase diagram close to the quasi-saturation field suggesting that bound two-magnon excitations are the lowest energy excitations close to and in the quasi-saturation regime. Qualitatively and semi-quantitatively, we relate such behavior to $XYZ$ exchange anisotropy and contributions from the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction to affect the magnetic properties of linarite.

We present a successful synthesis method of the series Ga$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OD)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ with substitutions up to $x=0.8$. The compound remains a frustrated kagome system with an insulating ground state similar to herbertsmithite for these substitutions, as the additional charge of Ga$^{3+}$ is most likely bound to additional OH$^{-}$ and Cl$^{-}$. Besides infrared measurements, we present magnetic and specific-heat data down to 2 K for selected samples with $0\leq x\leq0.8$. With increasing $x$ the long-range magnetic order is suppressed, similar to what was observed in the series Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$, indicating that Ga goes predominantly to the inter-plane position of the layered crystal structure. The reduction of the frozen magnetic fraction with increasing substitution was followed by $μ$SR measurements. $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was applied as a local probe for Ga induced disorder. One well resolved Ga NMR line of moderate width is found for each isotope across the phase diagram which indicates a rather homogeneous distribution of the Ga isotopes on a single site in the lattice.

The frustrated one-dimensional (1D) quantum magnet LiCuSbO$_4$ is one rare realization of the $J_1-J_2$ spin chain model with an easily accessible saturation field, formerly estimated to 12~T. Exotic multipolar nematic phases were theoretically predicted in such compounds just below the saturation field, but without unambiguous experimental observation so far. In this paper we present extensive experimental research of the compound in the wide temperature (30mK$-$300K) and field (0$-$13.3T) range by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR), $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic susceptibility (SQUID). $μ$SR experiments in zero magnetic field demonstrate the absence of long range 3D ordering down to 30mK. Together with former heat capacity data [S.E. Dutton \emph{et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 187206 (2012)], magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest short range correlated vector chiral phase in the field range $0-4$T. In the intermediate field values (5$-$12T), the system enters in a 3D ordered spin density wave phase with 0.75$μ_B$ per copper site at lowest temperatures (125mK), estimated by NMR. At still higher field, the magnetization is found to be saturated above 13T where the spin lattice $T_1^{-1}$ relaxation reveals a spin gap estimated to 3.2(2)K. We narrow down the possibility of observing a multipolar nematic phase to the range 12.5$-$13T.

Employing nuclear magnetic resonance in a broad magnetic-field range down to millikelvin temperatures, we show that in applied magnetic fields this enigmatic state is intrinsically unstable against a SL with a full or a partial gap. A similar instability of the gapless Fermi-surface SL was previously encountered in an organic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet, suggesting a common destabilization mechanism that most likely arises from spinon pairing. A salient property of this instability is that an infinitesimal field suffices to induce it, as predicted theoretically for some other types of gapless SL's.

Here we present an $^{17}$O NMR study of DQVOF, which isolates the local susceptibility of the breathing kagome network. By a fit to series expansion we extract the ratio of the interactions within the breathing kagome plane, $J_\triangledown / J_\vartriangle = 0.55(4)$, and the mean antiferromagnetic interaction $\bar{J}=60(7)$~K. Spin lattice, $T_1$, measurements reveal an essentially gapless excitation spectrum with a maximum gap $Δ/ \bar{J}=0.007(7)$. Our study provides new impetus for further theoretical investigations in order to establish whether the gapless spin liquid behavior displayed by DQVOF is intrinsic to its breathing kagome lattice or whether it is due to perturbations to this model, such as a residual coupling of the V$^{4+}$ ions in the breathing kagome planes to the interlayer V$^{3+}$ ($S=1$) spins.

The local spin susceptibility probed by the NMR shift hardly deviates from the macroscopic one down to 1 K pointing to a homogeneous magnetic system with a low defect concentration. The saturation of the NMR shift and the sublinear power law temperature (T) evolution of the 1/T1 NMR relaxation rate at low T point to a non-singlet ground state favoring a gapless fermionic description of the magnetic excitations. Below 1 K a pronounced slowing down of the spin dynamics is witnessed, which may signal a reconstruction of spinon Fermi surface. Nonetheless, the compound remains in a fluctuating spin liquid state down to the lowest temperature of the present investigation.

Solid-solutions of the "soft" quantum spin ice pyrochlore magnets Tb2B2O7 with B=Ti and Sn display a novel magnetic ground state in the presence of strong B-site disorder, characterized by a low susceptibility and strong spin fluctuations to temperatures below 0.1 K. These materials have been studied using ac-susceptibility and muSR techniques to very low temperatures, and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering techniques to 1.5 K. Remarkably, neutron spectroscopy of the Tb3+ crystal field levels appropriate to at high B-site mixing (0.5 < x < 1.5 in Tb2Sn2-xTixO7) reveal that the doublet ground and first excited states present as continua in energy, while transitions to singlet excited states at higher energies simply interpolate between those of the end members of the solid solution. The resulting ground state suggests an extreme version of a random-anisotropy magnet, with many local moments and anisotropies, depending on the precise local configuration of the six B sites neighboring each magnetic Tb3+ ion.

Strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects of heavy $d$-orbital elements have long been neglected in describing the ground states of their compounds thereby overlooking a variety of fascinating and yet unexplored magnetic and electronic states, until recently. The spin-orbit entangled electrons in such compounds can get stabilized into unusual spin-orbit multiplet $J$-states which warrants severe investigations. Here we show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations the ground state of Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$, a 6$H$ hexagonal perovskite is a close realisation of the elusive $J$~=~0 state. However, we find that local Ir moments are spontaneously generated due to the comparable energy scales of the singlet-triplet splitting driven by SOC and the superexchange interaction mediated by strong intra-dimer hop**. While the Ir ions within the structural Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimer prefers to form a spin-orbit singlet state (SOS) with no resultant moment, substantial interdimer exchange interactions from a frustrated lattice ensure quantum fluctuations till the lowest measured temperatures and stabilize a spin-orbital liquid phase.

We present a comprehensive set of NMR data taken on both the 23Na and 17O sites. We show that disordered magnetic freezing of all Ir sites sets in below Tf $\sim$ 7 K, well below J = 300 K, with a drastic slowing down of fluctuations to a static state revealed by our T1 measurements. Above typically 2Tf, physical properties are relevant to the spin liquid state induce by this exotic geometry. While the shift data shows that the susceptibility levels off below 80 K, 1/T1 has little variation from 300K to 2Tf. We discuss the implication of our results in the context of published experimental and theoretical work.

We report $^{35}$Cl NMR, ESR, $μ$SR and specific heat measurements on the $S=1/2$ frustrated kagomé magnet kapellasite, $α-$Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, where a gapless spin liquid phase is stabilized by a set of competing exchange interactions. Our measurements confirm the ferromagnetic character of the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction $J_1$ and give an energy scale for the competing interactions $|J| \sim 10$ K. The study of the temperature-dependent ESR lineshift reveals a moderate symmetric exchange anisotropy term $D$, with $|D/J|\sim 3$%. These findings validate a posteriori the use of the $J_1 - J_2 - J_d$ Heisenberg model to describe the magnetic properties of kapellasite [Bernu et al., Phys. Rev. B 87, 155107 (2013)]. We further confirm that the main deviation from this model is the severe random depletion of the magnetic kagomé lattice by 27%, due to Cu/Zn site mixing, and specifically address the effect of this disorder by $^{35}$Cl NMR, performed on an oriented polycrystalline sample. Surprisingly, while being very sensitive to local structural deformations, our NMR measurements demonstrate that the system remains homogeneous with a unique spin susceptibility at high temperature, despite a variety of magnetic environments. Unconventional spin dynamics is further revealed by NMR and $μ$SR in the low-$T$, correlated, spin liquid regime, where a broad distribution of spin-lattice relaxation times is observed. We ascribe this to the presence of local low-energy modes.

Analysis of the line widths and line shifts indicates the dominance of in-plane Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya anisotropy that is proposed to suppress strongly quantum spin fluctuations and thus to promote long-range ordering rather than a spin-liquid state. We also evidence an enhanced spin-phonon contribution that might originate from a lattice instability and discuss the origin of a low-temperature mismatch between intrinsic and bulk susceptibility in terms of local inhomogeneity.

A detailed bulk-magnetization characterization and comparison to the neodymium-based ($J=9/2$) compound allow us to assign the persistent spin dynamics to a quantum tunneling process. This is facilitated by pairwise anisotropic magnetic interactions, leading to a universal scaling of the muon relaxation. Our study reveals a remarkable analogy between weakly interacting half-integer-spin rare-earth magnets and molecular nanomagnets.

It is applied to the frustrated magnet kapellasite (Cu3Zn(OH)6Cl2) with the J1-J2-Jd-Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. Experimental data are reproduced with a set of "competing" exchange energies closed to J1 = -12K, J2= -4K and Jd=15.6K, where Jd is the third neighbor exchange energy across the hexagon. Strong constrains between these exchange energies are established. These values confirm the results of B. Fåk et al. (Phys. Rev. A satellite line associated with the Mn nearest neighbours (n.n.) of 75As displays a Curie-Weiss shift which demonstrates that Mn carries a local magnetic moment. This is confirmed by the main line broadening typical of a RKKY-like Mn-induced staggered spin polarization. The Mn moment is due to the localization of the additional Mn hole. These findings explain why Mn does not induce superconductivity in the pnictides contrary to other dopants such as Co, Ni, Ru or K.

The chain-like system Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_4O_{12} has potentially interesting magnetic properties due to the presence of Cu^{2+} and a structure-suggested low-dimensionality. We present magnetization M versus magnetic field H and temperature T, T- and H-dependent heat-capacity C_{p}, ^{45}Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon spin rotation (μSR), neutron diffraction measurements and electronic structure calculations for Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_{4}O_{12}. The onset of magnetic long-range antiferromagnetic order at T_{N} ~16 K is consistently evidenced from the whole gamut of our data. A significant sensitivity of T_{N} to the applied magnetic field H (T_{N}~0 K for H=70 kOe) is also reported. Coupled with a ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature (θ_{CW}~65 K) in the susceptibility (from a 100 K-300 K fit), it is indicative of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. These indications are corroborated by our density functional theory based electronic structure calculations where we find the presence of significant ferromagnetic couplings between some copper ions whereas AF couplings were present between some others. Our experimental data, backed by our theoretical calculations, rule out one-dimensional magnetic behaviour suggested by the structure and the observed long-range order is due to the presence of non-negligible magnetic interactions between adjacent as well as next-nearest chains.

While Herbertsmithite displays a gapless spin-liquid behavior in zero field, we uncover an instability toward a spin-solid phase at sub-kelvin temperature induced by an applied magnetic field. The latter phase shows largely suppressed moments $\lesssim 0.1\muB$ and gapped excitations. The H-T phase diagram suggests the existence of a quantum critical point at the small but finite magnetic field mu0 Hc=1.55(25)T. We discuss this finding in light of the perturbative Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction which was theoretically proposed to sustain a quantum critical regime for the quantum kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet model.

Rev. Lett. 100, 087202 (2008)]. It is therefore surprising that, at Tc ~ 9 K, a transition to a heterogeneous ground state is observed. A gradual wipeout of half the NMR intensity indicates a slowly fluctuating spin liquid component and a detailed analysis of the linewidth reveals the onset of static magnetism at the remaining half of the sites. It is proposed that this transition and unusual ground state originate from a nearby quantum critical point induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Our results point to an exotic quantum state below 9 K with coexistance of both dynamical and small frozen moments \sim 0.1 \muB. The frustration of antiferromagnetic interactions on the loosely connected kagome lattice associated to the enhancement of quantum fluctuations for S=1/2 spins was acknowledged long ago as a keypoint to stabilize novel ground states of magnetic matter. Only very recently, the model compound Herbersmithite, ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2, a structurally perfect kagome antiferromagnet, could be synthesized and enables a close comparison to theories. We review and classify various experimental results obtained over the past years and underline some of the pending issues.

Small quasi-static random internal fields develop below 40 K and persist down to our base temperature of 21 mK. They originate from hyperfine-enhanced $^{141}$Pr nuclear magnetism which requires a non-magnetic Pr$^{3+}$ crystal-field (CF) ground state. Besides, we observe a broad maximum of the relaxation rate at $\simeq 10$ K which we attribute to the population of the first excited magnetic CF level. Our results yield a Van-Vleck paramagnet picture, at variance with the formerly proposed spin-liquid ground state.

We report a muSR study of LiCrO2, which has a magnetic lattice made up of a stacking of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (Cr3+, S = 3/2) layers. A static magnetically ordered state is observed below the transition temperature T_N = 62 K, while the expected peak of the relaxation rate is slightly shifted downward by a few kelvins below T_N. We draw a comparison with the isostructural compound NaCrO2, where an exotic broad fluctuating regime has been observed [A. Olariu, P. Mendels, F. Bert, B. G. Ueland, P. Schiffer, R. F. Berger, and R. J. Cava, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 167203 (2006)] and was suggested to originate from topological excitations of the triangular lattice. Replacing Na by Li strongly narrows the exotic fluctuating regime formerly observed in NaCrO2, which we attribute to a more pronounced inter-plane coupling in LiCrO2.

Our results show that the impurities induce in their vicinity antiferromagnetic polarizations, extending over a few unit cells. At low temperature, these extended moments freeze in a process which is found universal among various other spin-gapped compounds: isolated ladders, Haldane or Spin-Peierls chains. This allows us to propose a simple common framework to explain the generic low-temperature impurity induced freezings observed in low dimensional spin-gapped materials.

Accordingly, the NMR signal is recovered at low $T$ above a threshold field, revealing a rapid temperature and field variation of the magnetic fluctuations.

Finally, we discuss our relaxation measurements in the light of Cu and Cl NMR data [cond-mat 070314] and suggest a flat q-dependence of the excitations.

At low do**s where room-temperature thermopower (TEP) is large, Curie-Weiss susceptibilities are observed in both materials. But NMR and muSR experiments find neither charge nor spin order down to low temperatures in Bi-misfit, in contrast to the case of NaxCoO2. This demonstrates that metallicity, charge and magnetic orders are specific of the Na layers in NaxCoO2 whereas strong correlations are generic of the cobaltates physics and could explain the large TEP.

This compound appears to be an ideal candidate for the study of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets with very weak interlayer coupling. While specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate the occurrence of a transition in the range 40-46 K, both muon spin rotation and NMR reveal a fluctuating regime extending well below T_c, with a peak of relaxation rate 1/T1 around 30 K. This novel finding is discussed within the context of excitations in the triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

At base temperature (T=35mK) the muon relaxation is found to be of dynamical nature which demonstrates that strong fluctuations persist below the ferromagnetic transition (T_C=0.87K). Hints of long range order appear as oscillations of the muon polarization when an external field is applied and also as a hysteretic behavior below T_C. We propose a dynamical and strongly correlated scenario where dynamics results from fluctuation of large spin clusters with the "ordered spin ice" structure.

Through 51V NMR, the ground state (GS) appears to be a mixture of different spin configurations, among which 20% correspond to a well defined short range order, possibly of the $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ type. While the freezing involve all the Cu$^{2+}$ spins, only 40% of the copper moment is actually frozen which suggests that quantum fluctuations strongly renormalize the GS.

In fact, muSR yields a signal of mostly nonmagnetic origin, which is attributed to the x=1 phase. The intrinsic cobalt spin susceptibility corresponding to this x=1 phase is measured using Na NMR. It is indeed found to be almost zero, in agreement with a low-spin 3+ charge state of all cobalt atoms. This single state of Co ions in CoO2 planes is confirmed by Co NMR, whose determination of cobalt shift and quadrupolar parameters allows us to give a reference value of the Co3+ orbital shift in cobaltates.
