In this paper, we study extremal values for the determinant of the weighted graph Laplacian under simple nondegeneracy conditions on the weights. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the determinant of the Laplacian to be bounded away from zero and for the existence of a minimizing set of weights. These conditions are given both in terms of properties of random spanning trees and in terms of a type of density on graphs. These results generalize and extend the work of [7].

The spread of the electron multiplication characteristics for the entire production batch is also presented, indicating the remarkably low voltage requirements of these MCP-PMTs. Detection efficiency and noise characteristics, such as dark count rate and afterpulsing level, are also reviewed.

We present results of several measurements of CsI[Na] scintillation response to 3-60 keV energy nuclear recoils performed by the COHERENT collaboration using tagged neutron elastic scattering experiments and an endpoint technique. Earlier results, used to estimate the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) event rate for the first observation of this process achieved by COHERENT at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), have been reassessed. We discuss corrections for the identified systematic effects and update the respective uncertainty values. The impact of updated results on future precision tests of CEvNS is estimated. We scrutinize potential systematic effects that could affect each measurement. In particular we confirm the response of the H11934-200 Hamamatsu photomultiplier tube (PMT) used for the measurements presented in this study to be linear in the relevant signal scale region.

The detector contains a total of 200 kg of liquid xenon in a titanium cryostat with 160 kg of xenon in active volume inside a Teflon-made light collection cage associated with electrode system. The active volume is viewed by two arrays of nineteen 3"-diameter Hamamatsu R11410-20 PMTs assembled in two planes on top and bottom. The electrode system is equipped with an electron shutter (a patented device) to reduce a "spontaneous" single-electron noise. The detector was tested in a ground-level laboratory. The obtained results demonstrate that detection of coherent elastic scattering of reactor antineutrinos off xenon nuclei at Kalinin nuclear power plant with the RED-100 detector is feasible with a threshold of 4 ionization electrons.

Abstract:
We consider several anisotropic extensions of the Belavin model, and show that integrability holds also for the massive case for some specific relations between the coupling constants. This is done by relating the S-matrix factorization property to the exceptional solutions of the eight-vertex model. The relation of exceptional solutions to the XXZ and six-vertex models is also shown.

While the later show excellent performance, the ALD-coated sensors have surprisingly low current saturation levels (~two orders of magnitude lower than expected) and extremely high gain recovery time (more than 7 orders of magnitude higher than expected). We suspect that these problems might be caused by the unexpected side-effects of the ALD process. To make a definite conclusion, more samples need to be tested, preferably from different production runs. If our observation were confirmed, it would mean a serious technological setback for ALD-coated MCP-PMTs.

We show that by treating fields as distributions and regularizing the operator product, it is possible to avoid all the singularities, and allow to obtain results consistent with perturbative calculations. We illustrate these results by considering the reduction to the massive free fermion model and extracting the quantum Hamiltonian as well as other conserved charges directly from the regularized trace identities. Moreover, we show that our regularization recovers Maillet's prescription in the classical limit.

We propose a realistic model of the optical properties of silver, in which inter-band transition with a threshold energy of ~ 4 eV is described phenomenologically by an ensemble of oscillators with same dam** constant and a certain distribution of resonant frequencies in the interband transition threshold to infinity. The contribution of the conduction electrons in the dielectric function is determined by the Drude formula. The proposed model actually contains the features of both the Drude-Lorentz model (Rakić et al. 1998) and Tauc-Lorentz model (Jian-Hong Qiu et al. 2005). However, unlike these works proposed model contains only six fitting parameters, with the square root of the mean square deviation of the absorption coefficient and refractive index of silver from the experimental values in the range of 0.6 nm - 6.0 nm being of the order of 0.05.

We present a general formalism to investigate the integrable properties of a large class of non-ultralocal models which in principle allows the construction of the corresponding lattice versions. Our main motivation comes from the su(1|1) subsector of the string theory on AdS_5 x S^5 in the uniform gauge, where such type of non-ultralocality appears in the resulting Alday-Arutyunov-Frolov (AAF) model. We first show how to account for the second derivative of the delta function in the Lax algebra of the AAF model by modifying Maillet's r- and s-matrices formalism, and derive a well-defined algebra of transition matrices, which allows for the lattice formulation of the theory. We illustrate our formalism on the examples of the bosonic Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa-Shimizu (WKIS) model and the two-dimensional free massive Dirac fermion model, which can be obtained by a consistent reduction of the full AAF model, and give the explicit forms of their corresponding r-matrices.

Significant changes of the relative permittivity of a silver film have been detected using the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) method when a constant electric field is applied to a MDM (metal-dielectric-metal) nanostructure. The structure looks like a capacitor with a 177-nm dielectric corundum film placed between two silver films 49nm and 37nm thick. The effect manifests itself as a noticeable change of the reflectivity of the structure when the voltage of up to 30V is applied to the electrodes. We have a good agreement between the theory and experiment only if we suppose that the optical parameters of anode and cathode silver films change differently and the Al_2O_3 film absorbs the incident light. The refraction coefficient of the cathode silver layer is shown to become zero when the applied voltage is above 16V.

We demonstrate 32.5 Tbit/s 16QAM Nyquist WDM transmission over a total length of 227 km of SMF-28 without optical dispersion compensation. A number of 325 optical carriers are derived from a single laser and encoded with dual-polarization 16QAM data using sinc-shaped Nyquist pulses. As we use no guard bands, the carriers have a spacing of 12.5 GHz equal to the Nyquist bandwidth of the data. We achieve a high net spectral efficiency of 6.4 bit/s/Hz using a software-defined transmitter which generates the electrical modulator drive signals in real-time.

We investigate the quantum integrability of the Landau-Lifshitz model and solve the long-standing problem of finding the local quantum Hamiltonian for the arbitrary n-particle sector. The particular difficulty of the LL model quantization, which arises due to the ill-defined operator product, is dealt with by simultaneously regularizing the operator product, and constructing the self-adjoint extensions of a very particular structure. The diagonalizibility difficulties of the Hamiltonian of the LL model, due to the highly singular nature of the quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian, are also resolved in our method for the arbitrary n-particle sector. We explicitly demonstrate the consistency of our construction with the quantum inverse scattering method due to Sklyanin, and give a prescription to systematically construct the general solution, which explains and generalizes the puzzling results of Sklyanin for the particular two-particle sector case. Moreover, we demonstrate the S-matrix factorization and show that it is a consequence of the discontinuity conditions on the functions involved in the construction of the self-adjoint extensions.

We show that the low-energy density of quasiparticle states in the mixed state of ultra-clean d-wave superconductors is characterized by pronounced quantum oscillations in the regime where the cyclotron frequency $\hbarω_c \ll Δ_0$, the d-wave pairing gap. Such oscillations as a function of magnetic field B are argued to be due to the internodal scattering of the d-wave quasiparticles near wavevectors $(\pm k_D,\pm k_D)$ by the vortex lattice as well as their Zeeman coupling. The periodicity of the oscillations is set by the condition $k_D \sqrt{hc/(eB)} \equiv k_D' \sqrt{hc/(eB')}\pmod {2π}$. We find that there is additional structure within each period which grows in complexity as the Dirac node anisotropy increases.

We study the question of diagonalizability of the Hamiltonian for the Faddeev-Reshetikhin (FR) model in the two particle sector. Although the two particle S-matrix element for the FR model, which may be relevant for the quantization of strings on $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$, has been calculated recently using field theoretic methods, we find that the Hamiltonian for the system in this sector is not diagonalizable. We trace the difficulty to the fact that the interaction term in the Hamiltonian violating Lorentz invariance leads to discontinuity conditions (matching conditions) that cannot be satisfied. We determine the most general quartic interaction Hamiltonian that can be diagonalized. This includes the bosonic Thirring model as well as the bosonic chiral Gross-Neveu model which we find share the same S-matrix. We explain this by showing, through a Fierz transformation, that these two models are in fact equivalent. In addition, we find a general quartic interaction Hamiltonian, violating Lorentz invariance, that can be diagonalized with the same two particle S-matrix element as calculated by Klose and Zarembo for the FR model. This family of generalized interaction Hamiltonians is not Hermitian, but is $PT$ symmetric. We show that the wave functions for this system are also $PT$ symmetric. Thus, the theory is in a $PT$ unbroken phase which guarantees the reality of the energy spectrum as well as the unitarity of the S-matrix.

We study the mixed state in an extreme type-II lattice d-wave superconductor in the regime of intermediate magnetic fields H_{c1} << H << H_{c2}. We analyze the low energy spectrum of the problem dominated by nodal Dirac-like quasiparticles with momenta near k_F=(\pm k_D,\pm k_D) and find that the spectrum exhibits characteristic oscillatory behavior with respect to the product of k_D and magnetic length l. The Simon-Lee scaling, predicted in this regime, is satisfied only on average, with the magnitude of the oscillatory part of the spectrum displaying the same 1/l dependence as its monotonous ``envelope'' part. The oscillatory behavior of the spectrum is due to the inter-nodal interference enhanced by the singular nature of the low energy eigenfunctions near vortices. We also study a separate problem of a single vortex piercing an isolated superconducting grain of size L by L. Here we find that the periodicity of the quasiparticle energy oscillations with respect to k_D L is doubled relative to the case where the field is zero and the vortex is absent, both such oscillatory behaviors being present at the leading order in 1/L. Finally, we review the overall features of the tunneling conductance experiments in YBCO and BSCCO, and suggest an interpretation of the peaks at 5-20 meV observed in the tunneling local density of states in these materials.

In the mixed state of an extreme type-II d-wave superconductor and within a broad regime of weak magnetic fields H_c1 << H << H_c2, the low energy Bogoliubov-deGennes quasiparticles can be effectively described as Dirac fermions moving in the field of singular scalar and vector potentials. Although the effective linearized Hamiltonian operator formally does not depend on the structure of vortex cores, a singular nature of the perturbation requires choosing a self-adjoint extension of the Hamiltonian by imposing additional boundary conditions at vortex locations. Each vortex is described by a single parameter θthat effectively represents all effects arising from the physics beyond linearization. With the value of θproperly fixed, the resulting density of states of Dirac Hamiltonian exhibits full invariance under arbitrary singular gauge transformations applied at vortex positions. We identify the self-adjoint extensions of the solutions found earlier, within the framework of the linearized Hamiltonian diagonalized by expansion in the plane wave basis, and analyze the relation between fully self-consistent formulation of the problem and the linearized model.

We employ index theoretic methods to study analytically the low energy spectrum of a lattice d-wave superconductor in the vortex lattice state. This allows us to compare singly quantized $hc/2e$ and doubly quantized $hc/e$ vortices, the first of which must always be accompanied by $Z_2$ branch cuts. For an inversion symmetric vortex lattice and in the presence of particle-hole symmetry we prove an index theorem that imposes a lower bound on the number of zero energy modes. Generic cases are constructed in which this bound exceeds the number of zero modes of an equivalent lattice of doubly quantized vortices, despite the identical point group symmetries. The quasiparticle spectrum around the zero modes is doubly degenerate and exhibits a Dirac-like dispersion, with velocities that become universal functions of $Δ_0/t$ in the limit of low magnetic field. For weak particle-hole symmetry breaking, the gapped state can be characterized by a topological quantum number, related to spin Hall conductivity, which generally differs in the cases of the $hc/2e$ and $hc/e$ vortex lattices.

The local density of states power spectrum of optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ (BSCCO) has been interpreted in terms of quasiparticle interference peaks corresponding to an "octet'' of scattering wave vectors connecting k-points where the density of states is maximal. Until now, theoretical treatments have not been able to reproduce the experimentally observed weights and widths of these "octet'' peaks; in particular, the predominance of the dispersing "q$_1$'' peak parallel to the Cu-O bond directions has remained a mystery. In addition, such theories predict "background'' features which are not observed experimentally. Here, we show that most of the discrepancies can be resolved when a realistic model for the out-of-plane disorder in BSCCO is used. Weak extended potential scatterers, which are assumed to represent cation disorder, suppress large-momentum features and broaden the low-energy "q$_7$''-peaks, whereas scattering at order parameter variations, possibly caused by a dopant-modulated pair interaction around interstitial oxygens, strongly enhances the dispersing "q$_1$''-peaks.

We introduce and study an XY-type model of thermal and quantum phase fluctuations in a two-dimensional correlated lattice d-wave superconductor based on the QED3 effective theory of high temperature superconductors. General features of and selected results obtained within this model were reported earlier in an abbreviated format (Z. Tesanovic, cond-mat/0405235). The model is geared toward describing not only the long distance but also the intermediate lengthscale physics of underdoped cuprates. In particular, we elucidate the dynamical origin and investigate specific features of the Cooper pair charge-density-wave (CPCDW), which we argue is the state behind the periodic charge density modulation discovered in recent STM experiments. We illustrate how Mott-Hubbard correlations near half-filling suppress superfluid density and favor an incompressible state which breaks translational symmetry of the atomic lattice. We show how the formation of the CPCDW in such a strongly quantum fluctuating superconductor can be understood as an Abrikosov-Hofstadter problem in a type-II dual superconductor, with the role of the dual magnetic field played by the electron density. The resulting Abrikosov lattice of dual vortices translates into the periodic modulation of the Bogoliubov-deGennes gap function and the electronic density. We compute detailed signatures of various Abrikosov-Hofstadter dual vortex arrays in the single-particle local tunneling density of states. A 4x4 checkerboard-type modulation pattern naturally arises as an energetically favored ground state at and near the x = 1/8 do** and produces good agreement with experimental observations.

Two possible mechanisms of surface plasmon (SP) oscillations dam** in metallic nanoparticles (MNPs), not connected with electron-phonon interaction are investigated theoretically: a) the radiation dam** of SP, b) resonant coupling of SP oscillations with electronic transitions in matrix. It is shown that the radiation dam** rate is proportional to the number of electrons in MNP and therefore this channel of energy outflow from MNP becomes essential for relatively large particles. The investigation of second mechanism shows that the rate of SP oscillations energy leakage from MNP dos not depend on particle size and is fully determined by the optical characteristics of the matrix. It is demonstrated that for very small MNPs of 3-5 nm size, where the strong 3D size quantization effect suppresses the electron-phonon interaction, the resonance coupling in certain cases provides an effective energy outflow.

It is found that the monodromy matrix transforms non-trivially under the non-compact T-duality group, which leaves the effective action invariant and this can be used to construct the monodromy matrix…

It is found that the monodromy matrix transforms non-trivially under the non-compact T-duality group, which leaves the effective action invariant and this can be used to construct the monodromy matrix for more complicated backgrounds starting from simpler ones. We construct, explicitly, ${\hat{\cal M}}$ for the exactly solvable Nappi-Witten model, both when B=0 and $B\neq 0$, where these ideas can be directly checked. We consider well known charged black hole solutions in the heterotic string theory which can be generated by T-duality transformations from a spherically symmetric `seed' Schwarzschild solution. We construct the monodromy matrix for the Schwarzschild black hole background of the heterotic string theory.

Abstract:
We present a prescription for constructing the monodromy matrix, $\hat{\cal M}(ω)$, for $O(d,d)$ invariant string effective actions and derive its transformation properties under the $T$-duality group. This allows us to construct $\hat{\cal M}(ω)$ for new backgrounds, starting from known ones, which are related by $T$-duality. As an application, we derive the monodromy matrix for the exactly sol…

Abstract:
We study the dynamics of an open membrane with a cylindrical topology, in the background of a constant three form. We use the action, due to Bergshoeff, London and Townsend, to study the noncommutativity properties of the boundary string coordinates. The constrained Hamiltonian formalism due to Dirac is used to derive the noncommutativity of coordinates. The chain of constraints is found to be f…

The collision of plane waves corresponding to massless states of closed string is considered in $D$-dimensional space-time. The reduced tree level effective action is known to be manifestly $O(d,d)$ invariant, $d$ being the number of transverse spatial dimensions in the collision process. We adopt a coset space reformulation of the effective two dimensional theory and discuss the relation of this process with classical integrable systems in two dimensions in the presence of gravity. We show how it is possible to generate new backgrounds for the scattering process, from known background solutions to the equations of motion, in the coset reformulation. We present explicit calculations for the case of four space-time dimensions as an illustrative example.
