In the parameter spaces of nonlinear dynamical systems, we investigate the boundaries between periodicity and chaos and unveil the existence of fractal sets characterized by a singular fractal dimension. This dimension stands out from the typical fractal dimensions previously considered universal for these parameter boundaries. We show that the singular fractal sets dwell along parameter curves, called extreme curves, that intersect periodicity cascades at their center of stability in all scales of parameters spaces. The results reported here are generally demonstrated for the class of one-dimensional maps with at least two control parameters, generalizations to other classes of systems are possible.

This work is based on the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi's theory of globally coupled phase oscillators, which we review in full detail by discussing its assumptions and showing all steps behind the derivation of its main results. Our formula is a stationary probability density function with a complex mathematical structure, is consistent with numerical simulations and gives a description of the stationary collective states of the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model.

Networked nonlinear systems present a variety of emergent phenomena as a result of the mutual interactions between their units. An interesting feature of these systems is the presence of stable periodic behavior even when each unit oscillates chaotically if in isolation. Surprisingly, the mechanism in which the network interaction replaces chaos by periodicity is still poorly understood. Here, we show that such an onset of regularity can occur via replication of periodic windows. This phenomenon multiplies the stability domains in the system parameter space, not only suppressing chaos but also making the network less vulnerable to external disturbances such as shocks and noise. Moreover, we observe that the network cluster synchronizes for the parameters corresponding to the replica periodic windows. To confirm these observations, we employ the formalism of the master stability function demonstrating that the complete synchronized state is indeed transversally unstable in the replica windows.

The use of non-ideal features of semiconductor devices is an interesting option for implementations of nonlinear electronic systems. This paper analyzes the Chua circuit with nonlinearity based on the exponential hyperbolic characteristics of semiconductor devices. The stability analysis using describing functions predicts the dynamics of this nonlinear system, which is corroborated by numerical investigations and experimental results. The dynamic behaviors and bifurcations of this nonlinear system are mapped in parameter space in order to create a base for studies, analyses, and designs. The dynamic behavior of the experimental high speed implementation of this version of Chua circuit differs from the expected dynamics for a conventional Chua circuit due to effects of unmodelled non-idealities of the real semiconductor devices, displaying that new and different dynamics for the Chua circuit can be obtained exploring different nonlinearities.

We show that for the Kuramoto model (with identical phase oscillators equally coupled) its global statistics and size of the basins of attraction can be estimated through the eigenvalues of all stable (frequency) synchronized states. This result is somehow unexpected since, by doing that, one could just use local analysis to obtain global dynamic properties. But recent works based on Koopman and Perron-Frobenius operators demonstrate that global features of a nonlinear dynamical system, with some specific conditions, are somehow encoded in the local eigenvalues of its equilibrium states. Recognized numerical simulations in the literature reinforce our analytical results.

The emergence of synchronized behavior is a direct consequence of networking dynamical systems. Naturally, strict instances of this phenomenon, such as the states of complete synchronization are favored, or even ensured, in networks with a high density of connections. Conversely, in sparse networks, the system state-space is often shared by a variety of coexistent solutions. Consequently, the convergence to complete synchronized states is far from being certain. In this scenario, we report the surprising phenomenon in which completely synchronized states are made the sole attractor of sparse networks by removing network links, the sparsity-driven synchronization. This phenomenon is observed numerically for nonlocally coupled Kuramoto networks and verified analytically for locally coupled ones. In addition, we reduce the network equations to a one-dimension dynamical system to unravel the bifurcation scenario underlying the network transition to completely synchronized behavior. Furthermore, we present a simple procedure, based on the bifurcations in the thermodynamic limit, that determines the minimum number of links to be removed in order to ensure complete synchronization. Finally, we propose an application of the reported phenomenon as a control scheme to drive complete synchronization in high connectivity networks.

We study two groups of nonidentical Kuramoto oscillators with differing frequency distributions. Coupling between the groups is repulsive, while coupling between oscillators of the same group is attractive. This asymmetry of interactions leads to an interesting synchronization behavior. For small coupling strength, the mean-fields of both groups resemble a more weakly coupled Kuramoto model. After increasing the coupling strength beyond a threshold, they reach the Bellerophon state of multiple clusters of averagely entrained oscillators. A further increase in the coupling strength then asymptotically transitions from the Bellerophon state to a single synchronized cluster. During this transition, the order parameters of both groups increase and resemble an equally strongly coupled Kuramoto model. Our analysis is based on the Ott-Antonsen mean-field theory.

The time-dependent vulnerability of synchronized states is shown for a complex network composed of electronic circuits. We demonstrate that disturbances to the local dynamics of network units can produce different outcomes to synchronization depending on the event timing. We address such time dependence by systematically perturbing the synchronized system at instants of time equally distributed along its trajectory. We find the time instants at which the perturbation desynchronizes the network to be complicatedly mixed with the ones that restore synchronization. Additionally, we characterize perturbation sets obtained for consecutive instants of time by defining a safety index between them. Finally, we demonstrate that the vulnerability is due to state space sensitivities occurring along synchronized trajectories.

We analyze the final state sensitivity of nonlocal networks with respect to initial conditions of their units. By changing the initial conditions of a single network unit, we perturb an initially synchronized state. Depending on the perturbation strength, we observe the existence of two possible network long-term states: (i) The network neutralizes the perturbation effects and returns to its synchronized configuration. (ii) The perturbation leads the network to an alternative desynchronized state. By computing uncertainty exponents of a two-dimensional cross section of the state space, we find the existence of fractal basin boundaries separating synchronized solutions from desynchronized ones. We attribute these features to an unstable chaotic set in which trajectories persist for times indefinitely long in the network.

We study the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi (KS) model composed by any N identical phase oscillators symmetrically coupled. Ranging from local (one-to-one, R = 1) to global (all-to-all, R = N/2) couplings, we derive the general solution that describes the network dynamics next to an equilibrium. Therewith we build stability diagrams according to N and R bringing to the light a rich scenery of attractors, repellers, saddles, and non-hyperbolic equilibriums. Our result also uncovers the obscure repulsive regime of the KS model through bifurcation analysis. Moreover, we present numerical evolutions of the network showing the great accordance with our analytical one. The exact knowledge of the behavior close to equilibriums is a fundamental step to investigate phenomena about synchronization in networks. As an example, at the end we discuss the dynamics behind chimera states from the point of view of our results.

In parameter space of nonlinear dynamical systems, windows of periodic states are aligned following routes of period-adding configuring periodic window sequences. In state space of driven nonlinear oscillators, we determine the torsion associated with the periodic states and identify regions of uniform torsion in the window sequences. Moreover, we find that the measured of torsion differs by a constant between successive windows in periodic window sequences. We call this phenomenon as torsion-adding. Finally, combining the torsion and the period adding rules, we deduce a general rule to obtain the asymptotic winding number in the accumulation limit of such periodic window sequences.

In the bi-dimensional parameter space of driven oscillators, shrimp-shaped periodic windows are immersed in chaotic regions. For two of these oscillators, namely, Duffing and Josephson junction, we show that a weak harmonic perturbation replicates these periodic windows giving rise to parameter regions correspondent to periodic orbits. The new windows are composed of parameters whose periodic orbits have periodicity and pattern similar to stable and unstable periodic orbits already existent for the unperturbed oscillator. These features indicate that the reported replicate periodic windows are associated with chaos control of the considered oscillators.

Periodic solution parameters, in chaotic dynamical systems, form periodic windows with characteristic distribution in two-parameter spaces. Recently, general properties of this organization have been reported, but a theoretical explanation for that remains unknown. Here, for the first time we associate the distribution of these periodic windows with scaling laws based in fundamental dynamic properties. For the Rössler system, we present a new scenery of periodic windows composed by multiple spirals, continuously connected, converging to different points along of a homoclinic bifurcation set. We show that the bi-dimensional distribution of these periodic windows unexpectedly follows scales given by the one-parameter homoclinic theory. Our result is a strong evidence that, close to homoclinic bifurcations, periodic windows are aligned in the two-parameter space.
