Competition between exchange interactions and magnetocrystalline anisotropy may bring new magnetic states that are of great current interest. An applied hydrostatic pressure can further be used to tune their balance. In this work we investigate the magnetization process of a biaxial antiferromagnet in an external magnetic field applied along the easy axis. We find that the single metamagnetic transition of the Ising type observed in this material under ambient pressure transforms under hydrostatic pressure into two transitions, a first-order spin flop transition followed by a second order transition towards a polarized ferromagnetic state near saturation. This reversible tuning into a new magnetic phase is obtained in layered bulk CrSBr at low temperature by varying the interlayer distance using high hydrostatic pressure, which efficiently acts on the interlayer magnetic exchange, and is probed by magneto-optical spectroscopy.

Pnictogens and chalcogens are both viable anions for promoting Fe-based superconductivity and intense research activity in the related families has established systematic correlation between the Fe-anion height and the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$, with an optimum Fe-anion height of $\sim$ 1.38 Å. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity in a novel compound LaFeSiO$_{1-δ}$ that incorporates a crystallogen element, Si, and challenges the above picture: considering the strongly squeezed Fe-Si height of 0.94 Å, the superconducting transition at $T_{c}$ = 10 K is unusually high. In the normal state, the resistivity displays non-Fermi-liquid behavior while NMR experiments evidence weak antiferromagnetic fluctuations. According to first-principles calculations, the Fermi surface of this material is dominated by hole pockets without nesting properties, which explains the strongly suppressed tendency towards magnetic order and suggests that the emergence of superconductivity materializes in a distinct set-up, as compared to the standard $s_\pm$- and $d$-wave electron-pocket-based situations. These properties and its simple-to-implement synthesis make LaFeSiO$_{1-δ}$ a particularly promising platform to study the interplay between structure, electron correlations and superconductivity.

We present an experimental set-up developed to perform optical spectroscopy experiments (Raman scattering and photoluminescence measurements) with a micrometer spatial resolution, in an extreme environment of low temperature, high magnetic field and high pressure. This unique experimental setup, to the best of our knowledge, allows us to explore deeply the phase diagram of condensed matter systems by tuning independently these three thermodynamic parameters, while monitoring the low-energy excitations (electronic, phononic or magnetic excitations), to spatially map the Raman scattering response or to investigate objects with low dimensions. We apply this technique to bulk FePS3, a layered antiferromagnet with a Neel temperature of T = 120 K.

A polarized electronic Raman scattering study reveals the emergence of symmetry dependence in the electronic Raman response of single crystalline URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ below the Kondo crossover scale $T_K\sim100K$. In particular, the development of a coherent Kondo pseudo-gap predominantly in the E$_g$ channel highlights strong anisotropy in the Kondo physics in URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ that has previously been neglected in theoretical models of this system. A calculation of the Raman vertices demonstrates that the strongest Raman vertex does indeed develop within the E$_g$ channel for interband transitions and reaches a maximum along the diagonals of the Brillouin zone, implying a d-wave-like geometry for the Kondo pseudo-gap. Below the hidden order phase transition at $T_{HO}= 17.5K$, the magnitude of the pseudo-gap is found to be enhanced. Moreover, the anisotropy of the pseudo-gap is similar in form to that proposed for the chiral d-wave (E$_g$) superconducting state that appears below $T_c=1.5K$.

Abstract:
The magnetic-field-dependent spin ordering of strained BiFeO3 films is determined using nuclear resonant scattering and Raman spectroscopy. The critical field required to destroy the cycloidal modulation of the Fe spins is found to be significantly lower than in the bulk, with appealing implications for field-controlled spintronic and magnonic devices.

Using density functional theory we show that this system is also a multiband metal in which the orthorhombic distortion is likely related to single-stripe antiferromagnetic order. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that these features occur side-by-side with superconductivity, which is suppressed by external pressure.

The spontaneous appearance of nematicity, a state of matter that breaks rotation but not translation symmetry, is one of the most intriguing property of the iron based superconductors (Fe SC), and has relevance for the cuprates as well. Establishing the critical electronic modes behind nematicity remains however a challenge, because their associated susceptibilities are not easily accessible by conventional probes. Here using FeSe as a model system, and symmetry resolved electronic Raman scattering as a probe, we unravel the presence of critical charge nematic fluctuations near the structural / nematic transition temperature, T$_S\sim$ 90 K. The diverging behavior of the associated nematic susceptibility foretells the presence of a Pomeranchuk instability of the Fermi surface with d-wave symmetry. The excellent scaling between the observed nematic susceptibility and elastic modulus data demonstrates that the structural distortion is driven by this d-wave Pomeranchuk transition. Our results make a strong case for charge induced nematicity in FeSe.

Our main finding is that the superconducting pair-breaking peak is associated with a dip on its higher-energy side, disappearing together at Tc. This result hints at an unconventional pairing mechanism, whereas spectral weight lost in the dip is transferred to the pair-breaking peak at lower energies. This conclusion is supported by cellular dynamical mean-field theory on the Hubbard model, which is able to reproduce all the main features of the B1g Raman response and explain the peak-dip behavior in terms of a nontrivial relationship between the superconducting and the pseudo gaps.

Electronic Raman scattering with in and out of (ab) plane polarizations have been performed on HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+d in a slightly underdoped single crystal with a critical temperature Tc=122 K. We find that the d-wave pairing gap at the antinodes is higher in energy (14 kBTc) than in other cuprates and that it varies very slowly up to Tc. This hints at a strong coupling nature of the pairing mechanism. Interestingly, we reveal that the pairing-gap feature in the Raman response displays a complex peak-dip-hump structure, in a fashion reminiscent of what observed by angle resolved photo-emission spectroscopy in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212). We detect two other distinct superconducting peaks at 5kBTc and 7kBTc when probing respectively around the nodes and on the whole Fermi surface. Finally we establish that the pairing gap at the antinodes is detected both for (ab) plane and for c-axis light polarizations. This shows that the quasiparticle dynamics along the c-axis is intimately connected to the antinodal one in the (ab) plane.

Above p=0.22 the three energies merge, below p=0.12, the A1g scale is no more detectable while the B1g and B2g scales become constant in energy. In between, the A1g and B1g scales increase monotonically with under-do** while the B2g one exhibits a maximum at p=0.16. The three superconducting energy scales appear to be an universal feature of hole-doped cuprates. We propose that the non trivial do** dependence of the three scales originates from Fermi surface topology changes and reveals competing orders inside the superconducting dome.

The hidden order state is characterized by a sharp excitation at 1.7 meV and a gap in the electronic continuum below 6.8 meV. Both Raman signatures are of pure A2g symmetry. By comparing the behavior of the Raman sharp excitation and the neutron resonance at Q0=(0,0,1), we provide new evidence, constrained by selection rules of the two probes, that the hidden order state breaks the translational symmetry along the c axis such that Gamma and Z points fold on top of each other. The observation of these distinct Raman features with a peculiar A2g symmetry as a signature of the hidden order phase places strong constraints on current theories of the hidden order in URu2Si2.

Combined with theoretical calculations, we show that the do**, at which the normal state pseudogap closes, coincides with a Lifshitz quantum phase transition where the active hole-like Fermi surface becomes electron-like. We report electronic Raman scattering measurements of Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals in their magnetic - Spin Density Wave (SDW) phase. The spectra display multiple, polarization-resolved SDW gaps as expected in a band-folding itinerant picture for a multiband system. The temperature dependence of the SDW gaps reveals an unusual evolution of the reconstructed electronic structure with at least one gap being activated only well below the magnetic SDW transition $T_N$. A comparison with temperature dependent Hall measurements allows us to assign this activated behavior to a change in the Fermi surface topology deep in the SDW phase, which we attribute to the disappearance of a hole-like Fermi pocket. Our results highlight the strong sensitivity of the low energy electronic structure to temperature in iron-arsenide superconductors.

Connected to the motion of the apical oxygen ions along the c direction, this mode controls directly the Mn-Mn interactions between adjacent Mn planes and the superexchange path. Crystal field and magnon mode excitations have been identified. The temperature investigation of the spin excitations shows that the spin structure is strongly influence by the Yb-Mn interaction. Under a magnetic field along the c axis, we have investigated the magnetic reordering and its impact on the spin excitations.

We reveal the full energy-momentum structure of the pseudogap of underdoped high-Tc cuprate superconductors. Our combined theoretical and experimental analysis explains the spectral-weight suppression observed in the B2g Raman response at finite energies in terms of a pseudogap appearing in the single-electron excitation spectra above the Fermi level in the nodal direction of momentum space. This result suggests an s-wave pseudogap (which never closes in the energy-momentum space), distinct from the d-wave superconducting gap. Recent tunneling and photoemission experiments on underdoped cuprates also find a natural explanation within the s-wave-pseudogap scenario.

Abstract:
A thorough characterization of many samples of the filled skutterudite compound PrOs4Sb12 is provided. We find that the double superconducting transition in the specific heat Tc1~1.89K and Tc2~1.72K tends to appear in samples with a large residual resistivity ratio, large specific heat jump at the superconducting transition and with the highest absolute value of the specific heat above Tc1. However, we present evidence which casts doubt on the intrinsic nature of the double superconducting transition. The ratio of the two specific heat jumps ΔC(Tc1)/ΔC(Tc2) shows a wide range of values on crystals from different batches but also within the same batch. This ratio was strongly reduced by polishing a sample down to 120um. Remarkably, three samples exhibit a single sharp transition of ~15mK in width at Tc~1.7K. The normalized specific heat jump (C-Cnormal)/Cnormal at Tc of two of them is higher than ~32% so larger than the sum of the two specific heat jumps when a double transition exists. As an evidence of better quality, the slope in the transition is at least two time steeper.
We discuss the origins of the double transition; in particular we consider, based on X-ray diffraction results, a scenario involving Pr-vacancies. The superconducting phase diagram under magnetic field of a sample with a single transition is fitted with a two-band model taking into account the good values for the gap as deduced from thermal conductivity measurements.

Abstract:
We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed to investigate the low energy magnetic excitations on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$. The observed excitation clearly softens at a wave vector Q = (1,0,0), which is the same as the modulation vector of the field-induced antiferro-quadrupolar ordering, and its intensity at Q = (1,0,0) is smaller…

We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed to investigate the low energy magnetic excitations on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$. The observed excitation clearly softens at a wave vector Q = (1,0,0), which is the same as the modulation vector of the field-induced antiferro-quadrupolar ordering, and its intensity at Q = (1,0,0) is smaller than that around the zone center. This result directly evidences that this excitonic behavior is derived mainly from nonmagnetic quadrupolar interactions. Furthermore, the narrowing of the linewidths of the excitations below the superconducting transition temperature indicates the close connection between the superconductivity and the excitons.

We discuss the superconducting phase diagram of PrOs4Sb12 and its possible relation with an unconventional superconducting order parameter. We give a detailed analysis of Hc2(T), which shows paramagnetic limitation (a support for even parity pairing) and multiband effects.
