Abstract:
We realize non-universal couplings between Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravitons and bulk Standard Model (SM) vectors in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model by including both UV and IR brane-localised gauge kinetic terms. We find that such kinetic terms can reduce the couplings of KK gravitons to SM gauge bosons and also ensure the KK vector masses are consistent with electroweak precision constraints.

Here, we investigate the effects of localized brane curvature on the properties of the radion in Goldberger-Wise stabilized Randall-Sundrum models. We point out that both the radion mass and coupling to brane matter are sensitive to the brane curvature. Radion/Higgs kinetic mixing, via an IR-localized non-minimal coupling to the Higgs, is also investigated, in relation to the ghost-like radion that can occur for $\mathcal{O}(10)$ values of the IR curvature (as required to significantly suppress the first Kaluza-Klein graviton mass). We also discuss a class of speculative IR localized terms involving the radion. Basic comments regarding the dual 4D theory are offered.

The dark matter may reside in a single multiplet or arise as an admixture of several multiplets. We find fifteen independent models, for which the dark matter is a viable candidate and neutrino mass results from a diagram with just one of the irreducible scale-invariant one-loop topologies. Further "non-pure" cases give hybrid one-/two-loop masses. All models predict new TeV scale physics, including a singlet scalar that generically mixes with the Higgs boson.

We investigate a minimal scale-invariant implementation of the scotogenic model and show that viable electroweak symmetry breaking can occur while simultaneously generating one-loop neutrino masses and the dark matter relic abundance. The model predicts the existence of a singlet scalar (dilaton) that plays the dual roles of triggering electroweak symmetry breaking and sourcing lepton number violation. Important constraints are studied, including those from lepton flavor violating effects and dark matter direct-detection experiments. The latter turn out to be somewhat severe, already excluding large regions of parameter space. None the less, viable regions of parameter space are found, corresponding to dark matter masses below (roughly) 10 GeV and above 200 GeV.

A recent paper investigated minimal R$ν$MDM models with the type T1-iii and T3 one-loop topologies. However, the candidate most-minimal model does not possess an accidental symmetry - the scalar potential contains an explicit symmetry breaking term, rendering the dark matter unstable. We present two models that cure this problem. However, we further show that all of the proposed minimal one-loop R$ν$MDM models suffer from a second problem - an additional source of explicit $Z_2$ symmetry breaking in the Yukawa sector. We perform a more-general analysis to show that neutrino mass models using either the type T3 or type T1-iii one-loop topologies do not give viable minimal dark matter candidates. Consequently, one-loop models of neutrino mass with minimal dark matter do not appear possible. Thus, presently there remains a single known (three-loop) model of neutrino mass that gives stable dark matter without invoking any new symmetries.

We make two main points: (1) The (naive) fine-tuning observed in an effective theory does not automatically imply that the UV completion is fine tuned. Instead, it gives a type of upper bound on the severity of the actual tuning in the UV completion; the actual tuning can be less severe than the naive tuning or even non-existent. (2) Within an effective theory, there appear to be two types of parameter relations that can alleviate the sensitivity of the scalar mass to the cutoff --- relationships among dimensionless couplings or relationships among dimensionful parameters. Supersymmetric models provide symmetry-motivated examples of the former, while scale-invariant models give symmetry-motivated examples of the latter.

However, these generalizations also give radiative masses that can dominate the seesaw masses in regions of parameter space --- i.e. they are not purely seesaw models, nor are they purely radiative models, but instead they are something in between. A recent work detailed the remaining minimal models of this type. Here we study the remaining model with d=9 and investigate the collider phenomenology of the exotic quadruplet fermions it predicts. These exotics can be pair produced at the LHC via electroweak interactions and their subsequent decays produce a host of multi-lepton signals. Furthermore, the branching fractions for events with distinct charged-leptons encode information about both the neutrino mass hierarchy and the leptonic mixing phases. In large regions of parameter-space discovery at the LHC with a 5 sigma significance is viable for masses approaching the TeV scale.

We present a class of models with radiative neutrino mass and stable dark-matter candidates. Neutrino mass is generated by a one-loop diagram with the same topography as Ma's 2006 proposal (which used an inert scalar-doublet and singlet fermion). We generalize this approach and determine all variants with new fields no larger than the adjoint representation. When the neutrino mass diagram contains a Majorana mass insertion there are two possibilities, both of which are known. If the mass insertion is of the Dirac type there are seven additional models, two of which are excluded by direct-detection experiments. The other five models are also constrained, such that only scalar dark-matter is viable. There are cases with an inert singlet, an inert doublet, and an inert triplet, providing a natural setting for inert N-tuplet models of dark matter, with the additional feature of achieving radiative neutrino mass. We show that some of the models admit a simple explanation for the (requisite) discrete symmetry, and briefly discuss cases with representations larger than the adjoint, which can admit a connection to the astrophysical gamma-ray signal.

The complexity of radiative neutrino-mass models can be judged by: (i) whether they require the imposition of ad hoc symmetries, (ii) the number of new multiplets they introduce, and (iii) the number of arbitrary parameters that appear. Adopting the view that the imposition of arbitrary new symmetries is the least appealing approach, the simplest models have two new multiplets and a minimal number of new parameters. With this in mind, we search for the simplest models of radiative neutrino mass. We are lead to two new models, containing a real scalar triplet and a charged scalar doublet (respectively), in addition to the charged singlet scalar considered by Zee [h^+\sim(1,1,2)]. The new models are essentially simplified versions of the Zee model and appear to be \emph{the simplest} models of radiative neutrino mass. However, these models are only of pedagogical interest; despite successfully generating nonzero masses, present-day data is sufficient to rule them out. The lessons learned from these models also enable one to exclude a more general class of radiative models. Moving beyond the minimal cases, we find a new model of two-loop masses that employs the charged doublet Φ\sim(1,2,3) and the doubly-charged scalar k^{++}\sim(1,1,4).

This diagram has a mass insertion on the internal fermion line, and the set of such diagrams can be partitioned according to whether the mass insertion is of the Majorana or Dirac type. In this work we extend a minimal model of secluded dark matter, comprised of a U(1)'-charged dark matter candidate, to include a confining hidden-sector CFT. This provides a technically natural explanation for the hierarchically small mediator-scale, with hidden-sector confinement generating m_{gamma'}>0. Furthermore, the thermal history of the universe can differ markedly from the WIMP picture due to (i) new annihilation channels, (ii) a (potentially) large number of hidden-sector degrees of freedom, and (iii) a hidden-sector phase transition at temperatures T << M_{dm} after freeze out. The mediator allows both the dark matter and the Standard Model to communicate with the CFT, thus modifying the low-energy phenomenology and cosmic-ray signals from the secluded sector.

Using the interval approach to brane-world gravity, we show that the inclusion of a large UV-localized Einstein-Hilbert term allows one to consistently incorporate 4D Einstein gravity into the low-energy theory. We detail the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein metric fluctuations and, in particular, examine the coupling of the little radion to matter. Furthermore, we show that Goldberger-Wise stabilization can be successfully implemented on such spaces. In particular, a motivated region of parameter space predicts a value of BR(μ---> e + γ) within the range to be probed by MEG.

We investigate the detailed phenomenology of a light Abelian hidden sector in the Randall-Sundrum framework. Relative to other works with light hidden sectors, the main new feature is a tower of hidden Kaluza-Klein vectors that kinetically mix with the Standard Model photon and Z. We investigate the decay properties of the hidden sector fields in some detail, and develop an approach for calculating processes initiated on the ultraviolet brane of a warped space with large injection momentum relative to the infrared scale. Using these results, we determine the detailed bounds on the light warped hidden sector from precision electroweak measurements and low-energy experiments. We find viable regions of parameter space that lead to significant production rates for several of the hidden Kaluza-Klein vectors in meson factories and fixed-target experiments. This offers the possibility of exploring the structure of an extra spacetime dimension with lower-energy probes.

The seesaw mechanism provides a simple explanation for the lightness of the known neutrinos. Under the standard assumption of a weak scale Dirac mass and a heavy sterile Majorana scale the neutrino mass is naturally suppressed below the weak scale. However, Nature may employ Dirac and Majorana scales that are much less than typically assumed, possibly even far below the weak scale. In this case the seesaw mechanism alone would not completely explain the lightness of the neutrinos. In this work we consider a warped framework that realizes this possibility by combining naturally suppressed Dirac and Majorana scales together in a mini-seesaw mechanism to generate light neutrino masses. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence the model is dual to a 4D theory with a hidden strongly coupled sector containing light composite right-handed neutrinos.

The Goldberger-Wise mechanism enables one to stabilize the length of the warped extra dimension employed in Randall-Sundrum models. In this work we generalize this mechanism to models with multiple warped throats sharing a common ultraviolet brane. For independent throats this generalization is straight forward. If the throats possess a discrete interchange symmetry like Z_n the stabilizing dynamics may respect the symmetry, resulting in equal throat lengths, or they may break it. In the latter case the ground state of an initially symmetric configuration is a stabilized asymmetric configuration in which the throat lengths differ. We focus on two- (three-) throat setups with a Z_2 (Z_3) interchange symmetry and present stabilization dynamics suitable for either breaking or maintaining the symmetry. Though admitting more general application, our results are relevant for existing models in the literature, including the two throat model with Kaluza-Klein parity and the three throat model of flavor based on a broken Z_3 symmetry.

We investigate a natural realization of a light Abelian hidden sector in an extended Randall-Sundrum (RS) model. In addition to the usual RS bulk we consider a second warped space containing a bulk U(1)_x gauge theory with a characteristic IR scale of order a GeV. This Abelian hidden sector can couple to the standard model via gauge kinetic mixing on a common UV brane. We show that if such a coupling induces significant mixing between the lightest U(1)_x gauge mode and the standard model photon and Z, it can also induce significant mixing with the heavier U(1)_x Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes. As a result it might be possible to probe several KK modes in upcoming fixed-target experiments and meson factories, thereby offering a new way to investigate the structure of an extra spacetime dimension.

Such spaces are interesting as they enable one to realize the weak scale via war**. We perform the Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction for gravitons and bulk vectors in these spaces and for the case of AdS_6 consider the KK spectrum of gauge-scalars. We further obtain the KK towers for bulk fermions on a slice of AdS_7 and AdS_9 and show that the RS approach to flavor generalizes to these spaces with the localization of chiral zero mode fermions controlled by their bulk Dirac mass parameters. However for the phenomenologically interesting case where the transverse radius is R^{-1}\sim TeV we show that bulk Standard Model fields are not viable due to a resulting volume suppression of the gauge coupling constants. A similar suppression occurs for the case of UV localization. Thus it seems that the Standard Model fields should be confined to the infrared brane in such spaces. Sterile fields and extended gauge sectors may propagate in the bulk with the gauge-coupling volume suppression experienced by the latter motivating a weak coupling to Standard Model fields. We also discuss some issues regarding the effective 4D theory description in these spaces.

We develop the necessary ingredients for the construction of realistic models with warped universal extra dimensions. Our investigations are based on the seven dimensional (7D) spacetime AdS_5 x T^2 and we derive the Kaluza-Klein (KK) spectra for gravitons, bulk vectors and the TeV brane localized Higgs boson. We show that, starting with a massive 7D fermion, one may obtain a single chiral massless mode whose profile is readily localized towards the Planck or TeV brane. This allows one to place the standard model fermions in the bulk and construct models of flavor as in Randall-Sundrum models. Our solution also admits the familiar KK parity of UED models so that the lightest odd KK state is stable and may be a dark matter (DM) candidate. As an additional feature the AdS_5 war** ensures that the excited modes on the torus, including the DM candidate, appear at TeV energies (as is usually assumed in UED models) even though the Planck scale sets the dimensions for the torus.

In this so called ``Little Randall-Sundrum'' (LRS) model the bounds on the gauge sector are less severe, permitting a lower Kaluza-Klein scale and cleaner discovery channels. However employing a low UV scale nullifies one major appeal of the RS model; namely the elegant explanation of the hierarchy between the Planck and weak scales. In this work we show that by localizing the gauge, fermion and scalar sector of the LRS model on a five dimensional slice of a doubly warped spacetime one may obtain the low UV brane scale employed in the LRS model and motivate the weak-Planck hierarchy. A five dimensional model containing both left-right and quark-lepton symmetries is constructed, with the gauge group broken by a combination of orbifold compactification and the Higgs mechanism. An analysis of the gauge and scalar sectors is performed and it is shown that the 5d model admits a simpler scalar sector. Bounds on the relevant symmetry breaking scales are obtained and reveal that two neutral gauge bosons may appear in the TeV energy range to be explored by the LHC. Split fermions are employed to remove the mass relations implied by the quark-lepton symmetry and the necessary fermion localisation is achieved by introducing bulk scalars with kink vacuum profiles. The symmetries of the model constrain the Yukawa sector, which in turn severely constrains the extent to which realistic split fermion scenarios may be realized in the absence of Yukawa coupling hierarchies. Nevertheless we present two interesting one generation constructs. One of these provides a rationale for $m_t>m_b, m_τ$ and $m_ν\ll m_t$ with Yukawa parameters which vary by only a factor of five. The other also suppresses the proton decay rate by spatially separating quarks and leptons but requires a Yukawa parameter hierarchy of order $10^2$.

The extra dimension forms an $S^1/Z_2\times Z_2'$ orbifold with the zero mode fermions corresponding to standard model quarks localised at one fixed point. Zero modes corresponding to left(right)-chiral leptons are localised at (near) the other fixed point. This localisation pattern is motivated by the symmetries of the model. Shifting the right-handed neutrinos and charged leptons slightly from the fixed point provides a new mechanism for understanding the absence of relations of the type $m_e=m_u$ or $m_e=m_d$ in Quark-Lepton symmetric models. Flavour changing neutral currents resulting from Kaluza Klein gluon exchange, which typically arise in the quark sector of split fermion models, are suppressed due to the localisation of quarks at one point. The separation of quarks and leptons in the compact extra dimension also acts to suppress the proton decay rate. This permits the extra dimension to be much larger than that obtained in a previous construct, with the bound $1/R\gtrsim30$ TeV obtained.

The orbifold construction is combined with a boundary Higgs sector to break the quartified gauge group directly to a group $H\subset SU(3)^4$ which is operative at the electroweak scale. We consider $H=G_{SM}\otimes SU(2)_\ell$ and $H=G_{SM}$, where $G_{SM}$ is the standard model gauge group, and find that unification occurs only when the remnant leptonic colour symmetry $SU(2)_\ell$ remains unbroken. Furthermore, the demands of a realistic low energy fermion spectrum specify a unique symmetry breaking route for the unifying case of $H=G_{SM}\otimes SU(2)_\ell$. We contrast this with four dimensional quartification models where unification may be achieved via a number of different symmetry breaking routes both with and without the remnant $SU(2)_\ell$ symmetry. The boundary Higgs sector of our model may be decoupled to achieve a Higgsless limit and we show that the electroweak Higgs doublet may be identified as the fifth component of a higher dimensional gauge field.

Instead the proton decay rate is suppressed if quarks and leptons are spatially separated in a compact extra dimension. This separation may be achieved by coupling five dimensional fermions to a bulk scalar field with a non-trivial vacuum profile and requires relationships between the associated quark and lepton Yukawa couplings. We hypothesise that these relationships are the manifestation of an underlying symmetry. We further show that the AS proposal may suggest that proton stability \emph{is} the result of an underlying symmetry, though not necessarily the traditional baryon number symmetry.

We perform a systematic analysis of the PMNS matrices which arise when one assigns the three generations of leptons to the $2\oplus 1$ representation of a horizontal $SU_H(2)$ symmetry. This idea has been previously explored by Kuchimanchi and Mohapatra. However, we assume $(i)$ the neutrino mass matrix results from leptonic couplings to $SU_L(2)$ triplet scalar fields and $(ii)$ hierarchies exist amongst lepton mass matrix elements which result from couplings to scalar fields with different $SU_H(2)$ charges. Of the sixteen candidate PMNS matrices which result it is found that only one is both predictive and possesses a leading order structure compatible with experimental data. The relevant neutrino mass matrix displays the symmetry $L_e-L_μ-L_τ$ to leading order and we explore the perturbations required to produce a realistic lepton spectrum. The effective mass in neutrinoless double beta decay is required to lie in the range $<m>/(10^{-2}\mathrm{eV})\in[0.7,2.5]$, which is just below current experimental bounds. $U_{e3}$ is non-zero but not uniquely determined.

The introduction of a singularity into the singlet fermion Majorana mass matrix results in a light neutrino sector of three neutrinos containing predominantly $ν_{αL}$, $α=e,μ,τ$, separated from two neutrinos containing a small $ν_{αL}$ component. The resulting active-sterile mixing in the $5\times 5$ mixing matrix is specified once the mass eigenvalues and the $3\times3$ submatrix corresponding to the MNS mixing matrix are known.

The singular see-saw mechanism is a variation of the see-saw mechanism whereby the right-chiral neutrino Majorana mass matrix is singular. Previous works employing the singular see-saw mechanism have assumed a vanishing left-chiral Majorana mass matrix. We study the neutrino spectrum obtained under a singular see-saw mechanism when the left-chiral neutrinos possess a non-zero Majorana mass matrix. We refer to this as the type-II singular see-saw mechanism. The resulting neutrino spectrum is found to be sensitive to the hierarchy of the Dirac and Majorana mass scales used and we explore the phenomenological consequences of the candidate hierarchies. The compatibility of the resulting spectra with the body of neutrino oscillation data is discussed. It is found that neutrino mass matrices with this structure result in 3+1 or 2+2 neutrino spectra, making it unlikely that this mass matrix structure is realized in nature. If the left-chiral Majorana mass matrix is also singular we show that a type-II singular see-saw mechanism can realize a spectrum of one active-sterile pseudo-Dirac neutrino in conjunction with two active Majorana neutrinos effectively decoupled from the sterile sector. This realizes a scheme discussed in the literature in relation to astrophysical neutrino fluxes.
