Abstract:
In this paper, we consider a six parameter family of affine Segre surfaces embedded in $\mathbb C^6$. For generic values of the parameters, this family is associated to the $q$-difference sixth Painlevé equation. We show that different limiting forms of this family give Segre surfaces that are isomorphic as affine varieties to the the monodromy manifolds of each Painlevé differential equation.

In this paper, we first construct a functor that sends representations of the $\tilde D_4$-type GDAHA to representations of the $\tilde E_6$-type one for specialised parameters. Then, under no restrictions on the parameters, we construct embeddings of both GDAHAs of type $\tilde D_4$ and $\tilde E_6$ into matrix algebras over quantum cluster $\mathcal{X}$-varieties, thus linking to the theory of higher Teichmüller spaces. For $\tilde E_6$, the two explicit representations we provide over distinct quantum tori are shown to be related by quiver reductions and mutations.

To estimate such an impact a second run of the experiment is needed, since the background due the three-body reaction hampered to collect enough data to resolve the resonant structures and extract the reaction rate.

In this paper we study the isomonodromic deformations of systems of differential equations with poles of any order on the Riemann sphere as Hamiltonian flows on the product of co-adjoint orbits of the Takiff algebra (i.e. truncated current algebra). Our motivation is to produce confluent versions of the celebrated Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equations and explain how their quasiclassical solution can be expressed via the isomonodromic $τ$-function. In order to achieve this, we study the confluence cascade of $r+ 1$ simple poles to give rise to a singularity of arbitrary Poincaré rank $r$ as a Poisson morphism and explicitly compute the isomonodromic Hamiltonians.

We show how to pass from solutions with power-like behaviour which are analytic in disks, to solutions with exponential behaviour which are analytic in sectors and have divergent asymptotics. We explicitly calculate the Stokes matrices of the confluent system in terms of the monodromy data, specifically the connection matrices, of the original system around the merging singularities.

The implications of our analysis are limiting distributions that have a well known form of long run variances for the time series limit. We obtain these results at the cost of imposing strict stationarity for the time series model and conditional independence between the time series and cross-section samples. Our results can be applied to estimators that combine time series and cross-section data in the presence of aggregate uncertainty in models with rationally forward looking agents.

A work recently published experimentally demonstrates an increase in the radiobiological efficacy of clinical proton beams when a tumour is treated in the presence of a concentration of 11B. The paper, for the first time, demonstrates the potential role of the p+11B to 3α (for brevity, p-B) reaction in the biological enhancement of proton therapy effectiveness. The work reports robust experimental data in terms of clonogenic cell survival and chromosomal aberrations and unambiguously shows the presence of an enhancement when cells were exposed to a clinical proton beam subject to treatment with sodium boroncaptate (BSH). Moreover, the greater occurrence of complex-type chromosomal exchanges points to the effect as due radiation of a LET (Linear Energy Transfer) greater than that of protons alone, possibly the alpha particles generated by the reaction. At the same time, we emphasized that analytical calculations, performed on the basis of the well-known total production cross section data, are not able to explain the effect in a macroscopic way, i.e. solely in terms of a trivial increase in the total dose released in the cells by the alpha-particles. In this paper, thanks to simulations and analytical calculations, we will discuss the theoretically expected alpha particle yield and the corresponding LET and RBE (Relative Biological Effectiveness) increase related to the 11B presence. We conclude that a mere calculation based on the classical concepts of integral Dose, and average LET and RBE cannot be used to justify the observed radiobiological phenomena. We, therefore, suggest that micro- and nano-dosimetric aspects must be taken into account.

Then $L$ and multiplication by $z+z^{-1}$ generate the Askey-Wilson (Zhedanov) algebra. A nice property of the Askey-Wilson polynomials is that the variables $z$ and $n$ occur in the explicit expression in a similar and to some extent exchangeable way. This property is called duality. It returns in the non-symmetric case and in the underlying algebraic structures: the Askey-Wilson algebra and the double affine Hecke algebra (DAHA). In this paper we follow the degeneration of the Askey-Wilson polynomials until two arrows down and in four different situations: for the orthogonal polynomials themselves, for the degenerate Askey-Wilson algebras, for the non-symmetric polynomials and for the (degenerate) DAHA and its representations.

The Riemann-Hilbert correspondence is an isomorphism between the de Rham moduli space and the Betti moduli space, defined by associating to each Fuchsian system its monodromy representation class. In 1997 Hitchin proved that this map is a symplectomorphism. In this paper, we address the question of what happens to this theory if we extend the de Rham moduli space by allowing connections with higher order poles. In our previous paper arXiv:1511.03851, based on the idea of interpreting higher order poles in the connection as boundary components with bordered cusps (vertices of ideal triangles in the Poincaré metric) on the Riemann surface, we introduced the notion of decorated character variety to generalize the Betti moduli space. This decorated character variety is the quotient of the space of representations of the fundamental groupid of arcs by a product of unipotent Borel sub-groups (one per bordered cusp). Here we prove that this representation space is endowed with a Poisson structure induced by the Fock--Rosly bracket and show that the quotient by unipotent Borel subgroups giving rise to the decorated character variety is a Poisson reduction. We deal with the Poisson bracket and its quantization simultaneously, thus providing a quantisation of the decorated character variety. In the case of dimension 2, we also endow the representation space with explicit Darboux coordinates. We conclude with a conjecture on the extended Riemann-Hilbert correspondence in the case of higher order poles.

Combining cross-section and time series data is a long and well established practice in empirical economics. We develop a central limit theory that explicitly accounts for possible dependence between the two data sets. We focus on common factors as the mechanism behind this dependence. Using our central limit theorem (CLT) we establish the asymptotic properties of parameter estimates of a general class of models based on a combination of cross-sectional and time series data, recognizing the interdependence between the two data sources in the presence of aggregate shocks. Despite the complicated nature of the analysis required to formulate the joint CLT, it is straightforward to implement the resulting parameter limiting distributions due to a formal similarity of our approximations with the standard Murphy and Topel's (1985) formula.

This fact naturally leads to an embedding of the Cherednik algebra of type $\check{C_1}C_1$ into $Mat(2,\mathbb T_q)$, i.e. $2\times 2$ matrices with entries in the quantum torus. For $q=1$ this result is equivalent to say that the Cherednik algebra of type $\check{C_1}C_1$ is Azumaya of degree $2$ \cite{O}. By quantising the action of the braid group and of the Okamoto transformations on the monodromy group associated to the sixth Painlevé equation we study the automorphisms of the Cherednik algebra of type $\check{C_1}C_1$ and conjecture the existence of a new automorphism. Inspired by the confluences of the Painlevé equations, we produce similar embeddings for the confluent Cherednik algebras $\mathcal H_V,\mathcal H_{IV},\mathcal H_{III},\mathcal H_{II}$ and $\mathcal H_{I},$ defined in arXiv:1307.6140.

In this paper, we describe a new type of surgery for non-compact Riemann surfaces that naturally appear when colliding two holes or two sides of the same hole in an orientable Riemann surface with boundary (and possibly orbifold points). As a result of this surgery, bordered cusps appear on the boundary components of the Riemann surface. In Poincaré uniformization, these bordered cusps correspond to ideal triangles in the fundamental domain. We introduce the notion of bordered cusped Teichmüller space and endow it with a Poisson structure, quantization of which is achieved with a canonical quantum ordering. We give a complete combinatorial description of the bordered cusped Teichmüller space by introducing the notion of maximal cusped lamination, a lamination consisting of geodesics arcs between bordered cusps and closed geodesics homotopic to the boundaries such that it triangulates the Riemann surface. We show that each bordered cusp carries a natural decoration, i.e. a choice of a horocycle, so that the lengths of the arcs in the maximal cusped lamination are defined as $λ$-lengths in Thurston--Penner terminology. We compute the Goldman bracket explicitly in terms of these $λ$-lengths and show that the Map** Class Group acts as a generalized cluster algebra mutation. From the physical point of view, our construction provides an explicit coordinatization of moduli spaces of open/closed string worldsheets and their quantization.

A $^{238}$U projectile beam was used to create cadmium isotopes via abrasion-fission at 410 MeV/u in a beryllium target at the entrance of the in-flight separator FRS at GSI. The fission fragments were separated with the FRS and injected into the isochronous storage ring ESR for mass measurements. The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) was performed under two different experimental conditions, with and without B$ρ$-tagging at the dispersive central focal plane of the FRS. In the experiment with B$ρ$-tagging the magnetic rigidity of the injected fragments was determined by an accuracy of $2\times 10^{-4}$. A new method of data analysis, using a correlation matrix for the combined data set from both experiments, has provided mass values for 25 different isotopes for the first time. The high selectivity and sensitivity of the experiment and analysis has given access even to rare isotopes detected with a few atoms per week. In this letter we present for the $^{129,130,131}$Cd isotopes mass values directly measured for the first time. The Cd results clearly show a very pronounced shell effect at $N=82$ which is in agreement with the conclusion from $γ$-ray spectroscopy of $^{130}$Cd and confirms the assumptions of modern shell-model calculations.

Aggregate shocks affect most households' and firms' decisions. Using three stylized models we show that inference based on cross-sectional data alone generally fails to correctly account for decision making of rational agents facing aggregate uncertainty. We propose an econometric framework that overcomes these problems by explicitly parameterizing the agents' inference problem relative to aggregate shocks. Our framework and examples illustrate that the cross-sectional and time-series aspects of the model are often interdependent. Therefore, estimation of model parameters in the presence of aggregate shocks requires the combined use of cross-sectional and time series data. We provide easy-to-use formulas for test statistics and confidence intervals that account for the interaction between the cross-sectional and time-series variation. Lastly, we perform Monte Carlo simulations that highlight the properties of the proposed method and the risks of not properly accounting for the presence of aggregate shocks.

Fusion cross sections of 28Si + 28Si have been measured in a range above the barrier with a very small energy step (DeltaElab = 0.5 MeV). Regular oscillations have been observed, best evidenced in the first derivative of the energy-weighted excitation function. For the first time, quite different behaviors (the appearance of oscillations and the trend of sub-barrier cross sections) have been reproduced within the same theoretical frame, i.e., the coupled-channel model using the shallow M3Y+repulsion potential. The calculations suggest that channel couplings play an important role in the appearance of the oscillations, and that the simple relation between a peak in the derivative of the energy-weighted cross section and the height of a centrifugal barrier is lost, and so is the interpretation of the second derivative of the excitation function as a barrier distribution for this system, at energies above the Coulomb barrier.

Here, we present such measurements for nobelium and lawrencium isotopes, which also pin down the deformed shell gap at $N=152$.

We consider the space of bilinear forms on a complex N-dimensional vector space endowed with the quadratic Poisson bracket studied in our previous paper arXiv:1012.5251. We classify all possible quadratic brackets on the set of pairs of matrices A and B with the property that the natural action of B on the defining matrix A of a bilinear form is a Poisson action of a Poisson-Lie group, thus endowing this space of bilinear forms with the structure of Poisson homogeneous space. Beside the product Poisson structure we find two more (dual to each other) structures for which (in contrast to the product Poisson structure) we can implement the reduction to the space of bilinear forms with block upper triangular defining matrices by Dirac procedure. We consider the generalisation of the above construction to triples and show that the space of bilinear forms then acquires the structure of Poisson symmetric space. We study also the generalisation to chains of transformations and to the quantum and quantum affine algebras and the relation between the construction of Poisson symmetric spaces and that of the Poisson groupoid.

The periodic time modulations, found recently in the two-body orbital electron-capture (EC) decay of both, hydrogen-like $^{140}$Pr$^{58+}$ and $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions, with periods near to 7s and amplitudes of about 20%, were re-investigated for the case of $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ by using a 245 MHz resonator cavity with a much improved sensitivity and time resolution. We observed that the exponential EC decay is modulated with a period $T = 7.11(11)$s, in accordance with a modulation period $T = 7.12(11)$ s as obtained from simultaneous observations with a capacitive pick-up, employed also in the previous experiments. The modulation amplitudes amount to $a_R = 0.107(24)$ and $a_P = 0.134(27)$ for the 245 MHz resonator and the capacitive pick-up, respectively. These new results corroborate for both detectors {\it exactly} our previous findings of modulation periods near to 7s, though with {\it distinctly smaller} amplitudes. Also the three-body $β^+$ decays have been analyzed. For a supposed modulation period near to 7s we found an amplitude $a = 0.027(27)$, compatible with $a = 0$ and in agreement with the preliminary result $a = 0.030(30)$ of our previous experiment. These observations could point at weak interaction as origin of the observed 7s-modulation of the EC decay. Furthermore, the data suggest that interference terms occur in the two-body EC decay, although the neutrinos are not directly observed.

We determine the explicit quantum ordering for a special class of quantum geodesic functions corresponding to geodesics joining exactly two orbifold points or holes on a non-compact Riemann surface. We discuss some special cases in which these quantum geodesic functions form sub--algebras of some abstract algebras defined by the reflection equation and we extend our results to the quantisation of matrix elements of the Fuchsian group associated to the Riemann surface in Poincaré uniformization. In particular we explore an interesting relation between the deformed $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ and the Zhedanov algebra AW(3).

We report on experiments in which the Texas Petawatt laser irradiated a mixture of deuterium or deuterated methane clusters and helium-3 gas, generating three types of nuclear fusion reactions: D(d, 3He)n, D(d, t)p and 3He(d, p)4He. We measured the yields of fusion neutrons and protons from these reactions and found them to agree with yields based on a simple cylindrical plasma model using known cross sections and measured plasma parameters. Within our measurement errors, the fusion products were isotropically distributed. Plasma temperatures, important for the cross sections, were determined by two independent methods: (1) deuterium ion time-of-flight, and (2) utilizing the ratio of neutron yield to proton yield from D(d, 3He)n and 3He(d, p)4He reactions, respectively. This experiment produced the highest ion temperature ever achieved with laser-irradiated deuterium clusters.

The limit of the spherical sub-algebra of the Cherednik algebra of type \check{C_1}C_1 is the monodromy manifold of the Painlevé VI equation. Here we prove that by considering the limits of the spherical sub-algebras of our new confluent algebras, one obtains the monodromy manifolds of all other Painlevé differential equations. Moreover, we introduce confluent versions of the Zhedanov algebra and prove that each of them (quotiented by their Casimir) is isomorphic to the corresponding spherical sub-algebra of our new confluent Cherednik algebras. We show that in the basic representation our confluent Zhedanov algebras act as symmetries of certain elements of the q-Askey scheme, thus setting a step** stone towards the solution of the open problem of finding the corresponding quantum algebra for each element of the q-Askey scheme.
These results establish a new link between the theory of the Painlevé equations and the theory of the q-Askey scheme and shed light on the reasons behind the occurrence of special polynomials in the Painlevé theory.

The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fréjus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of μ+ and μ- beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt Magnetised Iron Neutrino Detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular 6He and 18Ne, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fréjus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive.

Two different methods have been employed to determine the plasma temperature in a laser-cluster fusion experiment on the Texas Petawatt laser. In the first, the temperature was derived from time-of-flight data of deuterium ions ejected from exploding D2 or CD4 clusters. In the second, the temperature was measured from the ratio of the rates of two different nuclear fusion reactions occurring in the plasma at the same time: D(d, 3He)n and 3He(d, p)4He. The temperatures determined by these two methods agree well, which indicates that: i) The ion energy distribution is not significantly distorted when ions travel in the disassembling plasma; ii) The kinetic energy of deuterium ions, especially the hottest part responsible for nuclear fusion, is well described by a near-Maxwellian distribution.

We classify all central elements and characterise the Lie algebroid structure compatible with the Poisson algebra. We integrate this algebroid obtaining the corresponding groupoid of morphisms of block-upper-triangular bilinear forms. The groupoid elements automatically preserve the Poisson algebra. We then obtain the braid group action on the Poisson algebra as elementary generators within the groupoid. We discuss the affinisation and quantisation of this Poisson algebra, showing that in the case $m=1$ the quantum affine algebra is the twisted $q$-Yangian for ${o}_n$ and for $m=2$ is the twisted $q$-Yangian for ${sp}_{2n}$. We describe the quantum braid group action in these two examples and conjecture the form of this action for any $m>2$.

We prove that this bracket is the image under the Riemann-Hilbert map of the Poisson Lie bracket on the direct sum of three copies of sl_2. We give a representation of the braid group action on this algebra in terms of an adjoint matrix action. We characterize two types of finite-dimensional Poissonian reductions and give an explicit expression for the generating function of their central elements. We report on time-modulated two-body weak decays observed in the orbital electron capture of hydrogen-like $^{140}$Pr$^{59+}$ and $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions coasting in an ion storage ring. Using non-destructive single ion, time-resolved Schottky mass spectrometry we found that the expected exponential decay is modulated in time with a modulation period of about 7 seconds for both systems. Tentatively this observation is attributed to the coherent superposition of finite mass eigenstates of the electron neutrinos from the weak decay into a two-body final state.

Abstract:
We report on the first measurement of the $β^+$- and orbital electron capture decay rates of $^{140}$Pr nuclei with the most simple electron configurations: bare nuclei, hydrogen-like and helium-like ions. The measured electron capture decay constant of hydrogen-like $^{140}$Pr$^{58+}$ ions is about 50% larger than that of helium-like $^{140}$Pr$^{57+}$ ions. Moreover, $^{140}$Pr ions with one b…

Moreover, $^{140}$Pr ions with one bound electron decay faster than neutral $^{140}$Pr$^{0+}$ atoms with 59 electrons. To explain this peculiar observation one has to take into account the conservation of the total angular momentum, since only particular spin orientations of the nucleus and of the captured electron can contribute to the allowed decay.

Abstract:
The prompt gamma ray emission was investigated in the 16A MeV energy region by means of the 36,40Ar+96,92Zr fusion reactions leading to a compound nucleus in the vicinity of 132Ce. We show that the prompt radiation, which appears to be still effective at such a high beam energy, has an angular distribution pattern consistent with a dipole oscillation along the symmetry axis of the dinuclear syst…

We show that the prompt radiation, which appears to be still effective at such a high beam energy, has an angular distribution pattern consistent with a dipole oscillation along the symmetry axis of the dinuclear system. The data are compared with calculations based on a collective bremsstrahlung analysis of the reaction dynamics.

These Jucys-Murphy elements are a family of commuting elements in the affine Temperley-Lieb algebra, and we compute their eigenvalues on the generic irreducible representations. We show that they come from Jucys-Murphy elements in the affine Hecke algebra of type A, which in turn come from the Casimir element of the quantum group $U_h\mathfrak{gl}_n$. We also give the explicit specializations of these results to the finite Temperley-Lieb algebra.

We consider the Hankel determinant formula of the $τ$ functions of the Toda equation. We present a relationship between the determinant formula and the auxiliary linear problem, which is characterized by a compact formula for the $τ$ functions in the framework of the KP theory. Similar phenomena that have been observed for the Painlevé II and IV equations are recovered. The case of finite lattic…

Abstract:
In this paper we study the Hamiltonian structure of the second Painleve hierarchy, an infinite sequence of nonlinear ordinary differential equations containing PII as its simplest equation. The n-th element of the hierarchy is a non linear ODE of order 2n in the independent variable $z$ depending on n parameters denoted by ${t}_1,...,{t}_{n-1}$ and $α_n$. The n-th element of the hierarchy is a non linear ODE of order 2n in the independent variable $z$ depending on n parameters denoted by ${t}_1,...,{t}_{n-1}$ and $α_n$. We introduce new canonical coordinates and obtain Hamiltonians for the $z$ and $t_1,...,t_{n-1}$ evolutions. We give explicit formulae for these Hamiltonians showing that they are polynomials in our canonical coordinates.

Abstract:
We consider a Hankel determinant formula for generic solutions of the Painlevé IV equation. We show that the generating functions for the entries of the Hankel determinants are related to the asymptotic solution at infinity of the isomonodromic problem. Summability of these generating functions are also discussed.

Irregular isomonodromic deformations for Garnier systems and Okamoto's canonical transformations
Authors:
M. Mazzocco
Abstract:
In this paper we describe the Garnier systems as isomonodromic deformation equations of a linear system with a simple pole at zero and a Poincaré rank two singularity at infinity. We discuss the extension of Okamoto's birational canonical transformations to the Garnier systems in more than one variable and to the Schlesinger systems.
