Complexity-stability relationships in disordered dynamical systems
Abstract: Robert May famously used random matrix theory to predict that large, complex systems cannot admit stable fixed points. However, this general conclusion is not always supported by empirical observation: from cells to biomes, biological systems are large, complex and, often, stable. In this paper, we revisit May's argument in light of recent developments in both ecology and random matrix theory. Usi… ▽ More

Stable cooperation emerges in stochastic multiplicative growth
Abstract: Understanding the evolutionary stability of cooperation is a central problem in biology, sociology, and economics. There exist only a few known mechanisms that guarantee the existence of cooperation and its robustness to cheating. Here, we introduce a new mechanism for the emergence of cooperation in the presence of fluctuations. We consider agents whose wealth change stochastically in a multiplic… ▽ More

Maximal Diversity and Zipf's Law
Abstract: Zipf's law describes the empirical size distribution of the components of many systems in natural and social sciences and humanities. We show, by solving a statistical model, that Zipf's law co-occurs with the maximization of the diversity of the component sizes. The law ruling the increase of such diversity with the total dimension of the system is derived and its relation with Heaps' law is disc… ▽ More

How many phases nucleate in the bidimensional Potts model?
Abstract: We study the kinetics of the two-dimensional q > 4-state Potts model after a shallow quench slightly below the critical temperature and above the pseudo spinodal. We use numerical methods and we focus on intermediate values of q, 4 < q < 100. We show that, initially, the system evolves as if it were quenched to the critical temperature. The further decay from the metastable state occurs by nucleat… ▽ More

Metastability in the Potts model: exact results in the large q limit
Abstract: We study the metastable equilibrium properties of the Potts model with heat-bath transition rates using a novel expansion. The method is especially powerful for large number of state spin variables and it is notably accurate in a rather wide range of temperatures around the phase transition.

Dynamics of fluctuations in the Gaussian model with dissipative Langevin Dynamics
Abstract: We study the dynamics of the fluctuations of the variance $s$ of the order parameter of the Gaussian model, following a temperature quench of the thermal bath. At each time $t$, there is a critical value $s_c(t)$ of $s$ such that fluctuations with $s>s_c(t)$ are realized by condensed configurations of the systems, i.e., a single degree of freedom contributes macroscopically to $s$. This phenomenon… ▽ More

Dynamics of fluctuations in the Gaussian model with conserved dynamics
Abstract: We study the fluctuations of the Gaussian model, with conservation of the order parameter, evolving in contact with a thermal bath quenched from inverse temperature $β_i$ to a final one $β_f$. At every time there exists a critical value $s_c(t)$ of the variance $s$ of the order parameter per degree of freedom such that the fluctuations with $s>s_c(t)$ are characterized by a macroscopic contributio… ▽ More
