Abstract:
Hysteresis is treated as a history dependent branching, and the use of the classical Preisach model for the analysis of macroeconomic hysteresis is first discussed. Then, a new Preisach-type model is introduced as a macroeconomic aggregation of more realistic microeconomic hysteresis than in the case of the classical Preisach model. It is demonstrated that this model is endowed with a more general mechanism of branching and may account for the continuous evolution of the economy and its effect on hysteresis. Furthermore, it is shown that the sluggishness of economic recovery is an intrinsic manifestation of hysteresis branching.

Abstract:
Thermally-activated magnetization dynamics of small nanoparticles subject to microwave (AC) external fields is studied. It is shown that, under sufficiently strong microwave excitations, chaotic magnetization dynamics may occur close to saddle-type heteroclinic connections, and this heteroclinic chaos is responsible for the erosion of the safe basin around stable magnetization states. The erosion phenomenon is then connected to the escape problem from the energy well surrounding a stable equilibrium. It is shown that escape times follow a generalized Arrhenius' law governed by temperature, microwave field amplitude, frequency and heteroclinic chaos threshold.

Abstract:
It is shown that under appropriate conditions spin-transfer-driven magnetization dynamics in a single-domain nanomagnet is conservative in nature and admits a specific integral of motion, which is reduced to the usual magnetic energy when the spin current goes to zero. It is shown that under appropriate conditions spin-transfer-driven magnetization dynamics in a single-domain nanomagnet is conservative in nature and admits a specific integral of motion, which is reduced to the usual magnetic energy when the spin current goes to zero. The existence of this conservation law is connected to the symmetry properties of the dynamics under simultaneous inversion of magnetisation and time. When one applies an external magnetic field parallel to the spin polarization, the dynamics is transformed from conservative into dissipative. More precisely, it is demonstrated that there exists a state function such that the field induces a monotone relaxation of this function toward its minima or maxima, depending on the field orientation. These results hold in the absence of intrinsic dam** effects. When intrinsic dam** is included in the description, a competition arises between field-induced and dam**-induced relaxations, which leads to the appearance of limit cycles, that is, of magnetization self-oscillations.

Authors:
Isaak D. Mayergoyz
Abstract:
The review of the mathematical treatment of plasmon resonances as an eigenvalue problem for specific boundary integral equations is presented and general properties of plasmon spectrum are outlined. Promising applications of plasmon resonances to magnetics are described. Interesting relation of eigenvalue treatment of plasmon resonances to the Riemann hypothesis is discussed.

We study the stability of magnetization precessions induced in spin-transfer devices by the injection of spin-polarized electric currents. Instability conditions are derived by introducing a generalized, far-from-equilibrium interpretation of spin-waves. It is shown that instabilities are generated by distinct groups of magnetostatically coupled spin-waves. Stability diagrams are constructed as a function of external magnetic field and injected spin-polarized current. These diagrams show that applying larger fields and currents has a stabilizing effect on magnetization precessions. Analytical results are compared with numerical simulations of spin-transfer-driven magnetization dynamics.

A novel theoretical approach to the dynamics analysis of excitation of plasmon modes in nanoparticles is presented. This approach is based on the biorthogonal plasmon mode expansion and it leads to the predictions of time-dynamics of excitation of specific plasmon modes as well as their steady state amplitude and their decay. Temporal characteristics of plasmon modes in nanoparticles are expressed in terms of their shapes, permittivity dispersion relations and excitation conditions. In the case of the Drude model, analytical expressions for time-dynamics of plasmon modes are obtained.

We experimentally and theoretically study electromagnetic properties of optically thin silicon carbide (SiC) membranes perforated by an array of sub-wavelength holes. Giant absorption and transmission is found using Fourier Transformed Infrared (FTIR) microscopy and explained by introducing a frequency-dependent effective permittivity $ε_{\rm eff}(ω)$ of the perforated film. The value of $ε_{\rm eff}(ω)$ is determined by the excitation of two distinct types of hole resonances: a delocalized slow surface polariton (SSP) whose frequency is largely determined by the array period, and a localized surface polariton (LSP) which corresponds to the resonances of an isolated hole. Only SSPs are shown to modify $ε_{\rm eff}(ω)$ strongly enough to cause giant transmission and absorption.

A general formulation of scalar hysteresis is proposed. This formulation is based on two steps. First, a generating function g(x) is associated with an individual system, and a hysteresis evolution operator is defined by an appropriate envelope construction applied to g(x), inspired by the overdamped dynamics of systems evolving in multistable free energy landscapes. Second, the average hysteresis response of an ensemble of such systems is expressed as a functional integral over the space G of all admissible generating functions, under the assumption that an appropriate measure m has been introduced in G. The consequences of the formulation are analyzed in detail in the case where the measure m is generated by a continuous, Markovian stochastic process. The calculation of the hysteresis properties of the ensemble is reduced to the solution of the level-crossing problem for the stochastic process. In particular, it is shown that, when the process is translationally invariant (homogeneous), the ensuing hysteresis properties can be exactly described by the Preisach model of hysteresis, and the associated Preisach distribution is expressed in closed analytic form in terms of the drift and diffusion parameters of the Markovian process. Possible applications of the formulation are suggested, concerning the interpretation of magnetic hysteresis due to domain wall motion in quenched-in disorder, and the interpretation of critical state models of superconducting hysteresis.
