Despite major advances in artificial intelligence (AI) for medicine and healthcare, the deployment and adoption of AI technologies remain limited in real-world clinical practice. In recent years, concerns have been raised about the technical, clinical, ethical and legal risks associated with medical AI. To increase real world adoption, it is essential that medical AI tools are trusted and accepted by patients, clinicians, health organisations and authorities. This work describes the FUTURE-AI guideline as the first international consensus framework for guiding the development and deployment of trustworthy AI tools in healthcare. The FUTURE-AI consortium was founded in 2021 and currently comprises 118 inter-disciplinary experts from 51 countries representing all continents, including AI scientists, clinicians, ethicists, and social scientists. Over a two-year period, the consortium defined guiding principles and best practices for trustworthy AI through an iterative process comprising an in-depth literature review, a modified Delphi survey, and online consensus meetings. The FUTURE-AI framework was established based on 6 guiding principles for trustworthy AI in healthcare, i.e. Fairness, Universality, Traceability, Usability, Robustness and Explainability. Through consensus, a set of 28 best practices were defined, addressing technical, clinical, legal and socio-ethical dimensions. The recommendations cover the entire lifecycle of medical AI, from design, development and validation to regulation, deployment, and monitoring. FUTURE-AI is a risk-informed, assumption-free guideline which provides a structured approach for constructing medical AI tools that will be trusted, deployed and adopted in real-world practice. Researchers are encouraged to take the recommendations into account in proof-of-concept stages to facilitate future translation towards clinical practice of medical AI.

Human Body Dimensions Estimation (HBDE) is a task that an intelligent agent can perform to attempt to determine human body information from images (2D) or point clouds or meshes (3D). More specifically, if we define the HBDE problem as inferring human body measurements from images, then HBDE is a difficult, inverse, multi-task regression problem that can be tackled with machine learning techniques, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNN). Despite the community's tremendous effort to advance human shape analysis, there is a lack of systematic experiments to assess CNNs estimation of human body dimensions from images. Our contribution lies in assessing a CNN estimation performance in a series of controlled experiments. To that end, we augment our recently published neural anthropometer dataset by rendering images with different camera distance. We evaluate the network inference absolute and relative mean error between the estimated and actual HBDs. We train and evaluate the CNN in four scenarios: (1) training with subjects of a specific gender, (2) in a specific pose, (3) sparse camera distance and (4) dense camera distance. Not only our experiments demonstrate that the network can perform the task successfully, but also reveal a number of relevant facts that contribute to better understand the task of HBDE.

Let $T\in C^{2+\varepsilon}(S^{1}\setminus\{x_{b}\}),\,\,\varepsilon>0,$ be an orientation preserving circle homeomorphism with rotation number $ρ_T=[k_{1},k_{2},..,k_{m},1,1,...],\,\,m\geq1$, and a single break point $x_{b}$. We consider the stochastic sequence
$ \overline{z}_{n+1}(z_0,σ) = T(\overline{z}_{n}) + σξ_{n+1},\,\overline{z}_{0}:=z_0\in S^1$, where $\{ξ_{n},\,n=1,2,...\}$ is a sequence of real valued independent mean zero random variables of comparable sizes, and $σ> 0$ is a small parameter. Using the renormalization group technique de la Llave et al. proved for stochastic perturbations of one-dim. interval maps a central limit theorem (CLT) and the rate of convergence. In the present paper we extend their results to circle homeomorphisms with a break point by using the thermodynamic formalism constructed recently by Dzhalilov et al.. for such maps. This formalism and the dynamical partition $P_n(T,x_b)$ determined by the break point allows us, following the work of Vul et al., to establish a symbolic dynamics for any $z\in S^1$ and to define a transfer operator whose leading eigenvalue is used to bound the Lyapunov function. For a special sequence $\{n_m\}, m\to\infty$, the barycentric coefficient of any $z_k=T^kz_0$ not intersecting the orbit of $x_b$ is universally bounded in the corresponding interval in $P_{n_m}(T,x_b)$. A Taylor expansion of $ \overline{z}_{n}(z_0,σ)$ in $\{ξ_i\}$ leads to the decomposition into the term $T^n(z_0)$, a linearized effective noise and higher order terms in $\{ξ_i\}$. This is possible however only in certain neighbourhoods $A_k^{n_m}$ of the points $T^k z_0$ not containing break points of $T^{q_{n_m}}$, with $q_{n}$ the first return times of $T$. Proving the CLT for the linearized process leads finally to the proof of our extension of results of de la Llave et al..

Human shape estimation has become increasingly important both theoretically and practically, for instance, in 3D mesh estimation, distance garment production and computational forensics, to mention just a few examples. As a further specialization, \emph{Human Body Dimensions Estimation} (HBDE) focuses on estimating human body measurements like shoulder width or chest circumference from images or 3D meshes usually using supervised learning approaches. The main obstacle in this context is the data scarcity problem, as collecting this ground truth requires expensive and difficult procedures. This obstacle can be overcome by obtaining realistic human measurements from 3D human meshes. However, a) there are no well established methods to calculate HBDs from 3D meshes and b) there are no benchmarks to fairly compare results on the HBDE task. Our contribution is twofold. On the one hand, we present a method to calculate right and left arm length, shoulder width, and inseam (crotch height) from 3D meshes with focus on potential medical, virtual try-on and distance tailoring applications. On the other hand, we use four additional body dimensions calculated using recently published methods to assemble a set of eight body dimensions which we use as a supervision signal to our Neural Anthropometer: a convolutional neural network capable of estimating these dimensions. To assess the estimation, we train the Neural Anthropometer with synthetic images of 3D meshes, from which we calculated the HBDs and observed that the network's overall mean estimate error is $20.89$ mm (relative error of 2.84\%). The results we present are fully reproducible and establish a fair baseline for research on the task of HBDE, therefore enabling the community with a valuable method.

In robotics, many control and planning schemes have been developed to ensure human physical safety in human-robot interaction. The human psychological state and the expectation towards the robot, however, are typically neglected. Even if the robot behaviour is regarded as biomechanically safe, humans may still react with a rapid involuntary motion (IM) caused by a startle or surprise. Such sudden, uncontrolled motions can jeopardize safety and should be prevented by any means. In this letter, we propose the Expectable Motion Unit (EMU), which ensures that a certain probability of IM occurrence is not exceeded in a typical HRI setting. Based on a model of IM occurrence generated through an experiment with 29 participants, we establish the map** between robot velocity, robot-human distance, and the relative frequency of IM occurrence. This map** is processed towards a real-time capable robot motion generator that limits the robot velocity during task execution if necessary. The EMU is combined in a holistic safety framework that integrates both the physical and psychological safety knowledge. A validation experiment showed that the EMU successfully avoids human IM in five out of six cases.

KASCADE-Grande and its original array of KASCADE were dedicated to measure individual air showers of cosmic rays with great detail in the primary energy range of 100 TeV up to 1 EeV. The experiment has significantly contributed to investigations of the energy spectrum and chemical composition of cosmic rays in the transition region from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays as well as to the further development of hadronic interaction models through validity tests using the multi-detector information from KASCADE-Grande. Though the data accumulation was completed in 2013, the data analysis is still continuing. Recently, we investigate the reliability of the new hadronic interactions model of the Sibyll version 2.3d with the combined data from KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande, and compare it to the predictions of different hadronic interaction models. In addition, we update the web-based platform of the KASCADE Cosmic Ray Data Centre (KCDC), where now full datasets from KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande and the corresponding Monte-Carlo simulated events are available.

In this paper we present CALVIS, a method to calculate $\textbf{C}$hest, w$\textbf{A}$ist and pe$\textbf{LVIS}$ circumference from 3D human body meshes. Our motivation is to use this data as ground truth for training convolutional neural networks (CNN). Previous work had used the large scale CAESAR dataset or determined these anthropometrical measurements $\textit{manually}$ from a person or human 3D body meshes. Unfortunately, acquiring these data is a cost and time consuming endeavor. In contrast, our method can be used on 3D meshes automatically. We synthesize eight human body meshes and apply CALVIS to calculate chest, waist and pelvis circumference. We evaluate the results qualitatively and observe that the measurements can indeed be used to estimate the shape of a person. We then asses the plausibility of our approach by generating ground truth with CALVIS to train a small CNN. After having trained the network with our data, we achieve competitive validation error. Furthermore, we make the implementation of CALVIS publicly available to advance the field.

BatPay is a proxy scaling solution for the transfer of ERC20 tokens. It is suitable for micropayments in one-to-many and few-to-many scenarios, including digital markets and the distribution of rewards and dividends. In BatPay, many similar operations are bundled together into a single transaction in order to optimize gas consumption on the Ethereum blockchain. In addition, some costly verifications are replaced by a challenge game, pushing most of the computing cost off-chain. This results in a gas reduction of the transfer costs of three orders of magnitude, achieving around 1700 transactions per second on the Ethereum blockchain. Furthermore, it includes many relevant features, like meta-transactions for end-user operation without ether, and key-locked payments for atomic exchange of digital goods.

The data accumulation was fully completed and all experimental components were dismantled, though the analysis of the high-quality data is still continued. E.g., we investigated the validity of the hadronic interaction model of the new SIBYLL version 2.3c. We also published a new result of a search for large-scale anisotropies performed with the KASCADE-Grande data. Investigation of the attenuation length of the muon in the atmosphere is also updated with the predictions of the SIBYLL 2.3 interaction model. We investigated, in addition, the muon content of high-energy air showers and compared them to all post-LHC interaction models. In this contribution, the new and updated results from KASCADE-Grande will be presented. An update of the web-based data center KCDC offering the original scientific data from KASCADE-Grande to the public will be briefly discussed as well.

A core component of all Structure from Motion (SfM) approaches is bundle adjustment. As the latter is a computational bottleneck for larger blocks, parallel bundle adjustment has become an active area of research. Particularly, consensus-based optimization methods have been shown to be suitable for this task. We have extended them using covariance information derived by the adjustment of individual three-dimensional (3D) points, i.e., "triangulation" or "intersection". This does not only lead to a much better convergence behavior, but also avoids fiddling with the penalty parameter of standard consensus-based approaches. The corresponding novel approach can also be seen as a variant of resection / intersection schemes, where we adjust during intersection a number of sub-blocks directly related to the number of threads available on a computer each containing a fraction of the cameras of the block. We show that our novel approach is suitable for robust parallel bundle adjustment and demonstrate its capabilities in comparison to the basic consensus-based approach as well as a state-of-the-art parallel implementation of bundle adjustment. Code for our novel approach is available on GitHub: https://github.com/helmayer/RPBA

Many current methods to learn intuitive physics are based on interaction networks and similar approaches. However, they rely on information that has proven difficult to estimate directly from image data in the past. We aim to narrow this gap by inferring all the semantic information needed from raw pixel data in the form of a scene-graph. Our approach is based on neural-symbolic capsules, which identify which objects in the scene are static, dynamic, elastic or rigid, possible joints between them, as well as their collision information. By integrating all this with interaction networks, we demonstrate how our method is able to learn intuitive physics directly from image sequences and apply its knowledge to new scenes and objects, resulting in an inverse-simulation pipeline.

Large-scale quantum computers will require quantum gate operations between widely separated qubits. A method for implementing such operations, known as quantum gate teleportation (QGT), requires only local operations, classical communication, and shared entanglement. We demonstrate QGT in a scalable architecture by deterministically teleporting a controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate between two qubits in spatially separated locations in an ion trap. The entanglement fidelity of our teleported CNOT is in the interval [0.845, 0.872] at the 95% confidence level. The implementation combines ion shuttling with individually-addressed single-qubit rotations and detections, same- and mixedspecies two-qubit gates, and real-time conditional operations, thereby demonstrating essential tools for scaling trapped-ion quantum computers combined in a single device.

SLAM is becoming a key component of robotics and augmented reality (AR) systems. While a large number of SLAM algorithms have been presented, there has been little effort to unify the interface of such algorithms, or to perform a holistic comparison of their capabilities. This is a problem since different SLAM applications can have different functional and non-functional requirements. For example, a mobile phonebased AR application has a tight energy budget, while a UAV navigation system usually requires high accuracy. SLAMBench2 is a benchmarking framework to evaluate existing and future SLAM systems, both open and close source, over an extensible list of datasets, while using a comparable and clearly specified list of performance metrics. A wide variety of existing SLAM algorithms and datasets is supported, e.g. ElasticFusion, InfiniTAM, ORB-SLAM2, OKVIS, and integrating new ones is straightforward and clearly specified by the framework. SLAMBench2 is a publicly-available software framework which represents a starting point for quantitative, comparable and validatable experimental research to investigate trade-offs across SLAM systems.

The evolution of the muon content of very high energy air showers (EAS) in the atmosphere is investigated with data of the KASCADE-Grande observatory. For this purpose, the muon attenuation length in the atmosphere is obtained to $Λ_μ= 1256 \, \pm 85 \, ^{+229}_{-232}(\mbox{syst})\, \mbox{g/cm}^2$ from the experimental data for shower energies between $10^{16.3}$ and $10^{17.0} \, \mbox{eV}$. Comparison of this quantity with predictions of the high-energy hadronic interaction models QGSJET-II-02, SIBYLL 2.1, QGSJET-II-04 and EPOS-LHC reveals that the attenuation of the muon content of measured EAS in the atmosphere is lower than predicted. Deviations are, however, less significant with the post-LHC models. The presence of such deviations seems to be related to a difference between the simulated and the measured zenith angle evolutions of the lateral muon density distributions of EAS, which also causes a discrepancy between the measured absorption lengths of the density of shower muons and the predicted ones at large distances from the EAS core. The studied deficiencies show that all four considered hadronic interaction models fail to describe consistently the zenith angle evolution of the muon content of EAS in the aforesaid energy regime.

KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande were multi-detector installations to measure individual air showers of cosmic rays at ultra-high energy. Based on data sets measured by KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande, 90% C.L. upper limits to the flux of gamma-rays in the primary cosmic ray flux are determined in an energy range of ${10}^{14} - {10}^{18}$ eV. The analysis is performed by selecting air showers with a low muon content as expected for gamma-ray-induced showers compared to air showers induced by energetic nuclei. The best upper limit of the fraction of gamma-rays to the total cosmic ray flux is obtained at $3.7 \times {10}^{15}$ eV with $1.1 \times {10}^{-5}$. Translated to an absolute gamma-ray flux this sets constraints on some fundamental astrophysical models, such as the distance of sources for at least one of the IceCube neutrino excess models.

We convert propagating qubits encoded as superpositions of zero and one photons to the motion of a micrometer-sized mechanical resonator. Using quantum state tomography, we determine the density matrix of both the propagating photons and the mechanical resonator. By comparing a sufficient set of states before and after conversion, we determine the average process fidelity to be $F_{\textrm{avg}} = 0.83\substack{+0.03-0.06}$ which exceeds the classical bound for the conversion of an arbitrary qubit state. This conversion ability is necessary for using mechanical resonators in emerging quantum communication and modular quantum computation architectures.

We propose an extension of a standard stochastic individual-based model in population dynamics which broadens the range of biological applications. Our primary motivation is modelling of immunotherapy of malignant tumours. In this context the different actors, T-cells, cytokines or cancer cells, are modelled as single particles (individuals) in the stochastic system. The main expansions of the model are distinguishing cancer cells by phenotype and genotype, including environment-dependent phenotypic plasticity that does not affect the genotype, taking into account the effects of therapy and introducing a competition term which lowers the reproduction rate of an individual in addition to the usual term that increases its death rate. We illustrate the new setup by using it to model various phenomena arising in immunotherapy. Our aim is twofold: on the one hand, we show that the interplay of genetic mutations and phenotypic switches on different timescales as well as the occurrence of metastability phenomena raise new mathematical challenges. On the other hand, we argue why understanding purely stochastic events (which cannot be obtained with deterministic models) may help to understand the resistance of tumours to therapeutic approaches and may have non-trivial consequences on tumour treatment protocols. This is supported through numerical simulations.

The KASCADE experiment, financed by public money, was a large-area detector for the measurement of high-energy cosmic rays via the detection of air showers. KASCADE and its extension KASCADE-Grande stopped finally the active data acquisition of all its components including the radio EAS experiment LOPES end of 2012 after more than 20 years of data taking. In a first release, with KCDC we provide to the public the measured and reconstructed parameters of more than 160 million air showers. In addition, KCDC provides the conceptional design, how the data can be treated and processed so that they are also usable outside the community of experts in the research field. Detailed educational examples make a use also possible for high-school students and early stage researchers.

We report the first direct measurement of the overall characteristics of microwave radio emission from extensive air showers. Using a trigger provided by the KASCADE-Grande air shower array, the signals of the microwave antennas of the CROME (Cosmic-Ray Observation via Microwave Emission) experiment have been read out and searched for signatures of radio emission by high-energy air showers in the GHz frequency range. Microwave signals have been detected for more than 30 showers with energies above 3*10^16 eV. The observations presented in this Letter are consistent with a mainly forward-directed and polarised emission process in the GHz frequency range. The measurements show that microwave radiation offers a new means of studying air showers at energies above 10^17 eV.

KASCADE-Grande is dedicated for investigations of cosmic-ray air showers in the primary energy range from 10 PeV to 1 EeV. The multi-detector system allows us to reconstruct charged particles, electron and muon numbers for individual air showers with high accuracies. Based on the shower size ($N_{ch}$) spectra of the charged particle component, the all-particle energy spectrum of cosmic rays is reconstructed, where attenuation effects in the atmosphere are corrected by applying the constant intensity cut method. The energy calibration is performed by using CORSIKA simulations with high-energy interaction models QGSJET-II-2, QGSJET-II-4, EPOS 1.99 and SIBYLL 2.1, where FLUKA has been used as low-energy interaction model for all cases. In the different hadronic models, different abundances for shower particles are predicted. Such model differences in the observables will be compared and discussed in this contribution. Furthermore, by using data with increasing statistics, the updated energy spectra by means of different interaction models will be presented.

The KASCADE-Grande detector is an air-shower array devoted to the study of primary cosmic rays with very high-energies (E = 10^{16} - 10^{18} eV). The instrument is composed of different particle detector systems suitable for the detailed study of the properties of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) developed by cosmic rays in the atmosphere. Among the EAS observables studied with the detector, the charged number of particles, the muon content (at different energy thresholds), and the number of electrons are found. By comparing the measurements of these air-shower parameters with the expectations from MC simulations, different hadronic interaction models can be tested at the high-energy regime with the KASCADE-Grande experiment. In this work, the results of a study on the evolution of the muon content of EAS with zenith angle, performed with the KASCADE-Grande instrument, is presented. Measurements are compared with predictions from MC simulations based on the QGSJET II, QGSJET II-04, SIBYLL 2.1 and EPOS 1.99 hadronic interaction models. A mismatch between experiment and simulations is observed. A similar problem is found for the evolution of the lateral distribution function of muons in the atmosphere.

The KASCADE-Grande experiment, located at KIT-Karlsruhe, Germany, consists of a large scintillator array for measurements of charged particles, N_ch, and of an array of shielded scintillation counters used for muon counting, N_mu. KASCADE-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray measurements in the energy range 10 PeV to 1000 PeV, thereby enabling the verification of a knee in the iron spectrum expected at approximately 100 PeV. Exploring the composition in this energy range is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic cosmic rays. Following earlier studies of elemental spectra reconstructed in the knee energy range from KASCADE data, we have now extended these measurements to beyond 100 PeV. By analysing the two-dimensional shower size spectrum N_ch vs. N_mu, we reconstruct the energy spectra of different mass groups by means of unfolding methods. The procedure and its results, giving evidence for a knee-like structure in the spectrum of iron nuclei, will be presented.

The KASCADE-Grande Muon Tracking Detector enables with high accuracy the measurement of directions of EAS muons with energy above 0.8 GeV and up to 700 m distance from the shower centre. Reconstructed muon tracks are used to investigate muon pseudorapidity (eta) distributions. These distributions are nearly identical to the pseudorapidity distributions of their parent mesons produced in hadronic interactions. Comparison of the eta distributions from measured and simulated showers can be used to test the quality of the high energy hadronic interaction models. In this context a comparison of the QGSJet-II-2 and QGSJet-II-4 model will be shown. The pseudorapidity distributions reflect the longitudinal development of EAS and, as such, are sensitive to the mass of the cosmic rays primary particles. With various parameters of the eta distribution, obtained from the MTD data, it is possible to calculate the mean logarithmic mass of CRs. The results of the <lnA> analysis in the primary energy range 10^{16} eV - 10^{17} eV with the 1st quartile (Q1) of eta distribution will be presented.

Data of the Grande extension of the KASCADE experiment allows us to study extensive air showers induced by primary cosmic rays with energies above 10^{16} eV. The energy of an event is estimated in terms of the number of charged particles (Nch ) and the number of muons (Nμ ) measured at an altitude of 110 m a.s.l. While a combination of the two numbers is used for the energy, the ratio defines the primary mass (group). The spectrum of the combined light and medium mass components, recently measured with KASCADE-Grande, was found to be compatible with both a single power-law and a broken power-law in the energy range between 10^{16.3} and 10^{18} eV. In this contribution we will present the investigation of possible structures in the spectrum of light primaries with increased statistics both from a larger data set including more recent measurements and by using a larger fiducial area than in the previous study. With the better statistical accuracy and with optimized selection criteria for enhancing light primaries we have found evidence for a hardening (ankle) of the spectrum of the light component at an energy of 10^{17.08+-0.08} eV.

Using a trigger provided by the KASCADE-Grande air shower array, the signals of the microwave antennas of the CROME (Cosmic-Ray Observation via Microwave Emission) experiment have been read out and searched for signatures of radio emission by high-energy air showers. Microwave signals have been detected for more than 30 showers with energies above $3\times10^{16}$\,eV. The observations presented in this Letter are consistent with a mainly forward-beamed, coherent and polarised emission process in the GHz frequency range. An isotropic, unpolarised radiation is disfavoured as the dominant emission model. The measurements show that microwave radiation offers a new means of studying air showers at very high energy.

Methods A 620 (2010) 202] consists of, among others, a large scintillator array for measurements of charged particles, Nch, and of an array of shielded scintillation counters used for muon counting, Nmu. KASCADE-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray measurements in the energy range 10 PeV to about 2000 PeV, where exploring the composition is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays. Following earlier studies of the all-particle and the elemental spectra reconstructed in the knee energy range from KASCADE data [T. Antoni, et al. (KASCADE collaboration), Astropart. Phys. 24 (2005) 1], we have now extended these measurements to beyond 200 PeV. By analysing the two-dimensional shower size spectrum Nch vs. Nmu for nearly vertical events, we reconstruct the energy spectra of different mass groups by means of unfolding methods over an energy range where the detector is fully efficient. The procedure and its results, which are derived based on the hadronic interaction model QGSJET-II-02 and which yield a strong indication for a dominance of heavy mass groups in the covered energy range and for a knee-like structure in the iron spectrum at around 80 PeV, are presented. This confirms and further refines the results obtained by other analyses of KASCADE-Grande data, which already gave evidence for a knee-like structure in the heavy component of cosmic rays at about 80 PeV [W. Apel, et al. (KASCADE-Grande collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 (2011) 171104].

The study of human factors in the frame of interaction studies has been relevant for usability engi-neering and ergonomics for decades. Today, with the advent of wearable eye-tracking and Google glasses, monitoring of human factors will soon become ubiquitous. This work describes a computer vision system that enables pervasive map** and monitoring of human attention. The key contribu-tion is that our methodology enables full 3D recovery of the gaze pointer, human view frustum and associated human centred measurements directly into an automatically computed 3D model in real-time. We apply RGB-D SLAM and descriptor matching methodologies for the 3D modelling, locali-zation and fully automated annotation of ROIs (regions of interest) within the acquired 3D model. This innovative methodology will open new avenues for attention studies in real world environments, bringing new potential into automated processing for human factors technologies.

The spectrum of the combined components of light and intermediate masses was found to be compatible with a single power law in the energy range from $10^{16.3} \, \mathrm{eV}$ to $10^{18} \, \mathrm{eV}$. In this paper, we present an update of this analysis by using data with increased statistics, originating both from a larger data set including more recent measurements and by using a larger fiducial area. In addition, optimized selection criteria for enhancing light primaries are applied. We find a spectral feature for light elements, namely a hardening at $E = 10^{17.08 \pm 0.08} \, \mathrm{eV}$ with a change of the power law index from $-3.25 \pm 0.05$ to $-2.79 \pm 0.08$.

We investigate a special part of the human immune system, namely the activation of T-Cells, using stochastic tools, especially sharp large deviation results. T-Cells have to distinguish reliably between foreign and self peptides which are both presented to them by antigen presenting cells. Our work is based on a model studied by Zint, Baake, and den Hollander, and originally proposed by van den Berg, Rand, and Burroughs. We are able to dispense with some restrictive distribution assumptions that were used previously, i.e. we establish a higher robustness of the model. A central issue is the analysis of two new perspectives to the scenario (two different quenched systems) in detail. This means that we do not only analyse the total probability of a T-Cell activation (the annealed case) but also consider the probability of an activation of one certain T-Cell type and the probability of a T-Cell activation by a certain antigen presenting cell (the quenched cases). Finally, we see analytically that the probability of T-Cell activation increases with the number of presented foreign peptides in all three cases.

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays between 10**16 eV and 10**18 eV, derived from measurements of the shower size (total number of charged particles) and the total muon number of extensive air showers by the KASCADE-Grande experiment, is described. The resulting all-particle energy spectrum exhibits strong hints for a hardening of the spectrum at approximately 2x10**16 eV and a significant steepening at c. 8x10**16 eV. These observations challenge the view that the spectrum is a single power law between knee and ankle. Possible scenarios generating such features are discussed in terms of astrophysical processes that may explain the transition region from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays.

Whereas the `knee' of the cosmic ray spectrum at $3-5 \times 10^{15}$ eV was assigned to light primary masses by the KASCADE experiment, the new structure found by the KASCADE-Grande experiment is caused by heavy primaries. The result is obtained by independent measurements of the charged particle and muon components of the secondary particles of extensive air showers in the primary energy range of $10^{16}$ to $10^{18}$ eV. The data are analyzed on a single-event basis taking into account also the correlation of the two observables.

The transfer operator for $Γ_0(N)$ and trivial character $χ_0$ possesses a finite group of symmetries generated by permutation matrices $P$ with $P^2=id$. Every such symmetry leads to a factorization of the Selberg zeta function in terms of Fredholm determinants of a reduced transfer operator. These symmetries are related to the group of automorphisms in $GL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of the Maass wave forms of $Γ_0(N)$ . For the group $Γ_0(4)$ and Selberg's character $χ_α$ there exists just one non-trivial symmetry operator $P$. The eigenfunctions of the corresponding reduced transfer operator with eigenvalue $λ=\pm 1$ are related to Maass forms even respectively odd under a corresponding automorphism. It then follows from a result of Sarnak and Phillips that the zeros of the Selberg function determined by the eigenvalues $λ=-1$ of the reduced transfer operator stay on the critical line under the deformation of the character. From numerical results we expect that on the other hand all the zeros corresponding to the eigenvalue $λ=+1$ leave this line for $α$ turning away from zero.

The experimental data are compared to predictions of CORSIKA simulations using high-energy hadronic interaction models (e.g. QGSJET or EPOS), as well as low-energy interaction models (e.g. FLUKA or GHEISHA). This contribution will summarize the results of such investigations. In particular, the validity of the new EPOS version 1.99 for EAS with energy around 100 PeV will be discussed.

For this we make use of a Poincare map for the geodesic flow on the corresponding Hecke surfaces which has been constructed in arXiv:0801.3951 and which is closely related to the natural extension of the generating map for the so called Hurwitz-Nakada continued fractions. We derive simple functional equations for the eigenfunctions of the transfer operator which for eigenvalues rho =1 are expected to be closely related to the period functions of Lewis and Zagier for these Hecke triangle groups.

The antenna array LOPES is set up at the location of the KASCADE-Grande extensive air shower experiment in Karlsruhe, Germany and aims to measure and investigate radio pulses from Extensive Air Showers. The coincident measurements allow us to reconstruct the electric field strength at observation level in dependence of general EAS parameters. In the present work, the lateral distribution of the radio signal in air showers is studied in detail. It is found that the lateral distributions of the electric field strengths in individual EAS can be described by an exponential function. For about 20% of the events a flattening towards the shower axis is observed, preferentially for showers with large inclination angle. The estimated scale parameters R0 describing the slope of the lateral profiles range between 100 and 200 m. No evidence for a direct correlation of R0 with shower parameters like azimuth angle, geomagnetic angle, or primary energy can be found. This indicates that the lateral profile is an intrinsic property of the radio emission during the shower development which makes the radio detection technique suitable for large scale applications.

On basis of the theorem of a universal shower development stating that a hadronically generated extensive air shower is completely described by the primary energy, the position of the shower maximum and a parameter related to the total muon number, the so-called correlation curve method is developed and applied to KASCADE data. Correlation information of the muon and electron content of showers measured by the KASCADE experiment are used for the reconstruction of energy and mass of primary cosmic rays. Systematic uncertainties of the method and the results are discussed in detail. It is shown that by this method general tendencies in spectrum and composition indeed can be revealed, but the absolute normalization in energy and mass scale requires much more detailed simulations.

Abstract:
Let $T_{f}$ be a circle homeomorphism with two break points $a_{b},c_{b}$ and irrational rotation number $\varrho_{f}$. Suppose that the derivative $Df$ of its lift $f$ is absolutely continuous on every connected interval of the set $S^{1}\backslash\{a_{b},c_{b}\}$, that $DlogDf \in L^{1}$ and the product of the jump ratios of $ Df $ at the break points is nontrivial, i.e.…

Let $T_{f}$ be a circle homeomorphism with two break points $a_{b},c_{b}$ and irrational rotation number $\varrho_{f}$. Suppose that the derivative $Df$ of its lift $f$ is absolutely continuous on every connected interval of the set $S^{1}\backslash\{a_{b},c_{b}\}$, that $DlogDf \in L^{1}$ and the product of the jump ratios of $ Df $ at the break points is nontrivial, i.e. $\frac{Df_{-}(a_{b})}{Df_{+}(a_{b})}\frac{Df_{-}(c_{b})}{Df_{+}(c_{b})}\neq1$. We prove that the unique $T_{f}$- invariant probability measure $μ_{f}$ is then singular with respect to Lebesgue measure $l$ on $S^{1}$.
