Linear optimization on varieties and Chern-Mather classes
Abstract: The linear optimization degree gives an algebraic measure of complexity of optimizing a linear objective function over an algebraic model. Geometrically, it can be interpreted as the degree of a projection map on the {affine} conormal variety. Fixing an affine variety, our first result shows that the geometry of {this} conormal variety, expressed in terms of bidegrees, completely determines the Ch… ▽ More

Logarithmic cotangent bundles, Chern-Mather classes, and the Huh-Sturmfels Involution conjecture
Abstract: Using compactifications in the logarithmic cotangent bundle, we obtain a formula for the Chern classes of the pushforward of Lagrangian cycles under an open embedding with normal crossing complement. This generalizes earlier results of Aluffi and Wu-Zhou. The first application of our formula is a geometric description of Chern-Mather classes of an arbitrary very affine variety, generalizing earlie… ▽ More

Constructible sheaf complexes in complex geometry and Applications
Abstract: We present a detailed introduction of the theory of constructible sheaf complexes in the complex algebraic and analytic setting. All concepts are illustrated by many interesting examples and relevant applications, while some important results are presented with complete proofs. This paper is intended as a broadly accessible user's guide to these topics, providing the readers with a taste of the su… ▽ More

A Morse theoretic approach to non-isolated singularities and applications to optimization
Abstract: Let $X$ be a complex affine variety in $\mathbb{C}^N$, and let $f:\mathbb{C}^N\to \mathbb{C}$ be a polynomial function whose restriction to $X$ is nonconstant. For $g:\mathbb{C}^N \to \mathbb{C}$ a general linear function, we study the limiting behavior of the critical points of the one-parameter family of $f_t: =f-tg$ as $t\to 0$. Our main result gives an expression of this limit in terms of crit… ▽ More

Defect of Euclidean distance degree
Abstract: Two well studied invariants of a complex projective variety are the unit Euclidean distance degree and the generic Euclidean distance degree. These numbers give a measure of the algebraic complexity for "nearest" point problems of the algebraic variety. It is well known that the latter is an upper bound for the former. While this bound may be tight, many varieties appearing in optimization, engine… ▽ More

Euclidean distance degree of the multiview variety
Abstract: The Euclidean distance degree of an algebraic variety is a well-studied topic in applied algebra and geometry. It has direct applications in geometric modeling, computer vision, and statistics. We use non-proper Morse theory to give a topological interpretation of the Euclidean distance degree of an affine variety in terms of Euler characteristics. As a concrete application, we solve the open prob… ▽ More

Hodge-theoretic Atiyah-Meyer formulae and the stratified multiplicative property
Abstract: In this note we survey Hodge-theoretic formulae of Atiyah-Meyer type for genera and characteristic classes of complex algebraic varieties, and derive some new and interesting applications. We also present various extensions to the singular setting of the Chern-Hirzebruch-Serre signature formula.

Hodge genera of algebraic varieties, I
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of Hodge-theoretic (intersection homology) genera and their associated characteristic classes under proper morphisms of complex algebraic varieties. We obtain formulae that relate (parametrized families of) global invariants of a complex algebraic variety $X$ to such invariants of singularities of proper algebraic maps defined on $X$. Such formulae… ▽ More
