The rare-earth ions (RE = Eu, Dy Ho, Tm, Y) substituted charge-ordered antiferromagnetic manganites, Pr0.45RE0.05Ca0.5MnO3, were studied for the magnetic and the transport properties in the presence of external magnetic-fields of up to 14 Tesla. Regardless of the intrinsic magnetic property of RE ions, all the compounds exhibit successive step-like metamagnetic transitions at low temperatures, which are strongly correlated to their electronic transitions. At any fixed temperature in two different temperature-regimes, we observed contrary effects of the magnetic-field cycling on the resistivity of these manganites, namely, i) in the low temperature regime (<70 K), the resistivity was irreversible showing lower values than initial after a magnetic-field cycle was over, which is consistent with the irreversible magnetization, and ii) in a temperature regime above 70 K, the resistivity is irreversible with noticeably higher values than initial, whereas the magnetization was found to be reversible. For the latter case, we further show that this irreversibility of resistivity systematically depends on the temperature and the magnitude of applied magnetic-field. These results suggest that the observed resistivity behavior originated from the magnetic-field induced metamagnetic transitions and training effect.

We have deposited c-axis oriented thin films of La1.5Dy0.5CaBa2Cu5Oz (La-2125) tetragonal superconductor on LaAlO3 (001) by Pulsed Laser Deposition. These films were irradiated with 200 MeV Ag+15 ions. Atomic Force Microscopy and Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis indicate that the irradiation has created columnar defects along the entire thickness (2000 A) of these films. With ion irradiation up to 1*10^11 ions/cm2, the critical current density (Jc(H)) is found to enhance by almost five folds, which is attributed to the augmented flux pinning by the columnar defects. A further increase in irradiation to 1*10^12 ions/cm2 causes reduction in Jc(H) due to distorted morphology of the film. Our work shows that the enhancement in Jc (H) of the irradiated La-2125 film is comparable to that in irradiated RE-123. Also, as the La-2125 type films have greater chemical stability than RE-123 (RE = rare earth ion), La-2125 type superconductors are potential candidates for applications. Interesting to note that there are partial flux jumps observed to occur symmetrically in the magnetic hysteresis of irradiated La-2125 thin films with enhanced Jc(H).

The ABO3 type charge-ordered antiferromagnetic Nd0.50Ca0.50MnO3 (NCMO) manganite is doped at A-site by 3 % of Ba2+ for Ca2+. The resulting system, Nd0.50Ca0.47Ba0.03MnO3 (NCBMO), is studied for the effects of Ba do** on the magnetic and electronic properties. On application of magnetic field to NCBMO, strongly correlated successive sharp metamagnetic and electronic transitions are observed from antiferromagnetic-insulating to ferromagnetic-metallic state at 2.5 K. The critical magnetic field (Hc) required for metamagnetism is found to reduce drastically from 15 T for undoped NCMO to 3 T for NCBMO. On increasing the temperature, the Hc of NCBMO passes through a minimum. This behavior of Hc of NCBMO contrasts to that of NCMO. The results are discussed in context of A-site cation disorder and size.

Abstract:
Magnetoresistance (MR) and magnetization (d.c and a.c) measurements have been carried out on the manganites, (La0.7-2xEux)(Ca0.3Srx)MnO3 (0.05<x<0.15), in the temperature range of 5K-320K. At 5K, an unusually large MR of almost 98% is observed in the x=0.15 sample, nearly up to fields of 4-5 Tesla. At 5K, an unusually large MR of almost 98% is observed in the x=0.15 sample, nearly up to fields of 4-5 Tesla. This large high-field MR occurs in the metallic region, far below the insulator-metal transition temperature, and does not vary linearly with applied field. The unusual magnetoresistance is explained the light of various possibilities of phase segregation and cluster spin-glass behavior. Keywords: Manganites, High field MR, Phase segregation.

The La2-xPrxCayBa2Cu4+yOz (LaPrCaBCO) mixed oxides have been studied for their structural and superconducting properties using X-ray diffraction (XRD), d. c. resistivity, d. c. susceptibility and iodometric double titration. All the LaPrCaBCO samples for x = 0.1 - 0.5, exhibit tetragonal crystalline structure with P 4/mmm space group as determined by Rietveld analysis of the X-ray diffraction data. With increasing x, enhancement in Tc is observed, which is quite interesting for Pr substituted high Tc oxides. Maximum Tc ~ 58 K has been observed for x = 0.5(La-2125 stoichiometry). The results of structural studies and superconducting property measurements are presented in light of increase in Tc in LaPrCaBCO system with increasing Pr concentration.
