Abstract:
The observation of non-perturbative harmonic emission in solids from ultrashort laser pulses [1] sparked a wave of studies [2,3] as a probe of charge carrier dynamics in solids under strong fields and a route to extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond photonic devices [4]. High harmonic generation (HHG) in liquids [5,6] is far less explored, despite their relevance to biological media, and the mechan…

High harmonic generation (HHG) in liquids [5,6] is far less explored, despite their relevance to biological media, and the mechanism is hotly debated. Using few-cycle pulses below the breakdown threshold, we demonstrate HHG in alcohol with data showing carrier-envelope-phase-dependent XUV spectra extending to 50 eV from isopropanol. We study the mechanism of the harmonic emission through its dependence on the driving field and find it to be consistent with a strong-field recombination mechanism. This maps emitted photon energy to the electron trajectories. We explore the role of the liquid environment in scattering the trajectories and find evidence that information on electron scattering from neighbouring molecules is encoded in the harmonic spectra. Using simulations we exploit this to estimate the scattering cross section and we confirm that the cross-section in liquid isopropanol is significantly reduced compared to vapour. Our findings suggest an \textit{in situ} measurement strategy for retrieving accurate values of scattering cross sections in liquids, and also a pathway to liquid-based attosecond XUV devices.

Abstract:
The order parameter of a condensate with two internal states can continuously distort in such a way as to remove twists that have been imposed along its length. We observe this effect experimentally in the collapse and recurrence of Rabi oscillations in a magnetically trapped, two-component Bose-Einstein condensate of ^87Rb.

We consider a binary mixture of two overlap** Bose-Einstein condensates in two different hyperfine states of \Rb87 with nearly identical magnetic moments. Such a system has been simply realized through application of radiofrequency and microwave radiation which drives a two-photon transition between the two states. The nearly identical magnetic moments afford a high degree of spatial overlap, permitting a variety of new experiments. We discuss some of the conditions under which the magnetic moments are identical, with particular emphasis placed on the requirements for a time-averaged orbiting potential (TOP) magnetic trap.

Abstract:
We have measured the relative phase of two Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) using a time-domain separated-oscillatory-field condensate interferometer. A single two-photon coupling pulse prepares the double condensate system with a well-defined relative phase; at a later time, a second pulse reads out the phase difference accumulated between the two condensates. We find that the accumulated phase…

A single two-photon coupling pulse prepares the double condensate system with a well-defined relative phase; at a later time, a second pulse reads out the phase difference accumulated between the two condensates. We find that the accumulated phase difference reproduces from realization to realization of the experiment, even after the individual components have spatially separated and their relative center-of-mass motion has damped.

A two-photon transition is used to convert an arbitrary fraction of the 87Rb atoms in a |F=1,m_f=-1> condensate to the |F=2,m_f=1> state. Transferring the entire population imposes a discontinuous change on the condensate's mean-field repulsion, which leaves a residual ringing in the condensate width. A calculation based on Gross-Pitaevskii theory agrees well with the observed behavior, and from the comparison we obtain the ratio of the intraspecies scattering lengths for the two states, a_|1,-1> / a_|2,1> = 1.062(12).
