Programming Mechanics in Knitted Materials, Stitch by Stitch
Abstract: Knitting turns yarn, a 1D material, into a 2D fabric that is flexible, durable [1], and can be patterned to adopt a wide range of 3D geometries [2]. Like other mechanical metamaterials [3], the elasticity of knitted fabrics is an emergent property of the local stitch topology and pattern that cannot solely be attributed to the yarn itself. Thus, knitting can be viewed as an additive manufacturing… ▽ More

A mathematical overview and some applications of gear design
Abstract: In this paper we give a brief overview of the geometry of involute gears, from a mathematical more than an engineering perspective. We also list some of the many variant geared mechanisms and discuss some of our 3D printed mechanisms.

Ray-marching Thurston geometries
Abstract: We describe algorithms that produce accurate real-time interactive in-space views of the eight Thurston geometries using ray-marching. We give a theoretical framework for our algorithms, independent of the geometry involved. In addition to scenes within a geometry $X$, we also consider scenes within quotient manifolds and orbifolds $X / Γ$. We adapt the Phong lighting model to non-euclidean geomet… ▽ More

Knotty knits are tangles on tori
Abstract: In this paper we outline a topological framework for constructing 2-periodic knitted stitches and an algebra for joining stitches together to form more complicated textiles. Our topological framework can be constructed from certain topological "moves" which correspond to "operations" that knitters make when they create a stitch. In knitting, unlike Jacquard weaves, a set of $n$ loops may be combin… ▽ More

A chiral family of triply-periodic minimal surfaces derived from the quartz network
Abstract: We describe a new family of triply-periodic minimal surfaces with hexagonal symmetry, related to the quartz (qtz) and its dual (the qzd net). We provide a solution to the period problem and provide a parametrisation of these surfaces, that are not in the regular class, by the Weierstrass-Enneper formalism. We identified this analytical description of the surface by generating an area-minimising me… ▽ More

Straight Round the Twist: Frustration and Chirality in Smectics-A
Abstract: Frustration is a powerful mechanism in condensed matter systems, driving both order and co plexity. In smectics, the frustration between macroscopic chirality and equally spaced layers generates textures characterised by a proliferation of defects. In this article, we study several different ground states of the chiral Landau-de Gennes free energy for a smectic liquid crystal. The standard theory… ▽ More

Patterns on a Roll: A Method for Continuous Feed Nanoprinting
Abstract: Exploiting elastic instability in thin films has proven a robust method for creating complex patterns and structures across a wide range of lengthscales. Even the simplest of systems, an elastic membrane with a lattice of pores, under mechanical strain, generates complex patterns featuring long-range orientational order. When we promote this system to a curved surface, in particular, a cylindrical… ▽ More

Smectic Pores and Defect Cores
Abstract: Riemann's minimal surfaces are a complete, embeddable, one-parameter family of minimal surfaces with translational symmetry along one direction. It's infinite number of planar ends are joined together by an array of necks, closely matching the morphology of a bicontinuous, lamellar system with pores connecting alternating layers. We demonstrate explicitly that Riemann's minimal surfaces are compos… ▽ More

Disclination Loops, Hedgehogs, and All That
Abstract: The homotopy theory of topological defects is a powerful tool for organizing and unifying many ideas across a broad range of physical systems. Recently, experimental progress has been made in controlling and measuring colloidal inclusions in liquid crystalline phases. The topological structure of these systems is quite rich but, at the same time, subtle. Motivated by experiment and the power of to… ▽ More

The Power of Poincaré: Elucidating the Hidden Symmetries in Focal Conic Domains
Abstract: Focal conic domains are typically the "smoking gun" by which smectic liquid crystalline phases are identified. The geometry of the equally-spaced smectic layers is highly generic but, at the same time, difficult to work with. In this Letter we develop an approach to the study of focal sets in smectics which exploits a hidden Poincaré symmetry revealed only by viewing the smectic layers as projec… ▽ More

Helical Nanofilaments and the High Chirality Limit of Smectics-A
Abstract: Liquid crystalline systems exhibiting both macroscopic chirality and smectic order experience frustration resulting in mesophases possessing complex three-dimensional order. In the twist-grain-boundary phase, defect lattices mediate the propagation of twist throughout the system. We propose a new chiral smectic structure composed of a lattice of chiral bundles as a model of the helical nanofilam… ▽ More

Elastic Instability Triggered Pattern Formation
Abstract: Recent experiments have exploited elastic instabilities in membranes to create complex patterns. However, the rational design of such structures poses many challenges, as they are products of nonlinear elastic behavior. We pose a simple model for determining the orientational order of such patterns using only linear elasticity theory which correctly predicts the outcomes of several experiments.… ▽ More
