A method for sound field decomposition based on neural networks is proposed. The method comprises two stages: a sound field separation stage and a single-source localization stage. In the first stage, the sound pressure at microphones synthesized by multiple sources is separated into one excited by each sound source. In the second stage, the source location is obtained as a regression from the sound pressure at microphones consisting of a single sound source. The estimated location is not affected by discretization because the second stage is designed as a regression rather than a classification. Datasets are generated by simulation using Green's function, and the neural network is trained for each frequency. Numerical experiments reveal that, compared with conventional methods, the proposed method can achieve higher source-localization accuracy and higher sound-field-reconstruction accuracy.

Quantum computers (QCs), which work based on the law of quantum mechanics, are expected to be faster than classical computers in several computational tasks such as prime factoring and simulation of quantum many-body systems. In the last decade, research and development of QCs have rapidly advanced. Now hundreds of physical qubits are at our disposal, and one can find several remarkable experiments actually outperforming the classical computer in a specific computational task. On the other hand, it is unclear what the typical usages of the QCs are. Here we conduct an extensive survey on the papers that are posted in the quant-ph section in arXiv and claim to have used QCs in their abstracts. To understand the current situation of the research and development of the QCs, we evaluated the descriptive statistics about the papers, including the number of qubits employed, QPU vendors, application domains and so on. Our survey shows that the annual number of publications is increasing, and the typical number of qubits employed is about six to ten, growing along with the increase in the quantum volume (QV). Most of the preprints are devoted to applications such as quantum machine learning, condensed matter physics, and quantum chemistry, while quantum error correction and quantum noise mitigation use more qubits than the other topics. These imply that the increase in QV is fundamentally relevant, and more experiments for quantum error correction, and noise mitigation using shallow circuits with more qubits will take place.

Teichmüller space $\mathrm{Teich}(R)$ of a Riemann surface $R$ is a deformation space of $R$. In this paper, we prove a sufficient condition for extremality of the Beltrami coefficients when $R$ has the $\mathbb Z$ action. As an application, we discuss the construction of geodesics. Earle-Kra-Krushkaĺ proved that the necessary and sufficient conditions for the geodesics connecting $[0]$ and $[μ]$ to be unique are $\| μ_0 \|_{\infty} = | μ_0 | ( z )$ (a.e.$z$) and ``unique extremality''. As a byproduct of our results, we show that we cannot exclude ``unique extremality''.To show the above claim, we construct a point $[μ_0]$ in $\mathrm{Teich}(\mathbb C \setminus \mathbb Z)$, satisfying $\| μ_0 \|_{\infty} = | μ_0 | ( z )$ (a.e.$z$) and there exists a family of geodesics $\{ γ_λ\} _{λ\in D}$ connecting $[0]$ and $[μ_0]$ with complex analytic parameter, where $D$ is an open set in $l^{\infty}$.

We report on two superoutbursts of the AM CVn-type object CR Boo in 2014 April--March and 2015 May--June. A precursor outburst acompanied both of these superoutbursts. During the rising branch of the main superoutburst in 2014, we detected growing superhumps (stage A superhumps) whose period was $0.017669(24)$ d. Assuming that this period reflects the dynamical precession rate at the radius of the 3:1 resonance, we could estimate the mass ratio ($q=M_2/M_1$) of 0.101(4) by using the stage A superhump period and the orbital one of 0.0170290(6) d. This mass ratio is consistent with that expected by the theoretical evolutionary model of AM CVn-type objects. The detection of precursor outbursts and stage A superhumps is the second case in AM CVn-type objects. There are two interpretations of the outbursts of AM CVn-type objects. One is a dwarf nova (DN) outbursts analogy, which is caused by thermal and tidal instabilities. Another is the VY Scl-type variation, which is caused by the variation of the mass-transfer rate of the secondary. This detection of the superhump variations strongly suggests the former interpretation.

In this article, we consider modeling ranked responses from a heterogeneous population. Specifically, we analyze data from the Eurobarometer 34.1 survey regarding public policy preferences towards drugs, alcohol and AIDS. Such policy preferences are likely to exhibit substantial differences within as well as across European nations reflecting a wide variety of cultures, political affiliations, ideological perspectives and common practices. We use a mixed membership model to account for multiple subgroups with differing preferences and to allow each individual to possess partial membership in more than one subgroup. Previous methods for fitting mixed membership models to rank data in a univariate setting have utilized an MCMC approach and do not estimate the relative frequency of each subgroup. We propose a variational EM approach for fitting mixed membership models with multivariate rank data. Our method allows for fast approximate inference and explicitly estimates the subgroup sizes. Analyzing the Eurobarometer 34.1 data, we find interpretable subgroups which generally agree with the "left vs right" classification of political ideologies.

Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, arXiv:0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 102 SU UMa-type dwarf novae observed mainly during the 2014-2015 season and characterized these objects. Our project has greatly improved the statistics of the distribution of orbital periods, which is a good approximation of the distribution of cataclysmic variables at the terminal evolutionary stage, and confirmed the presence of a period minimum at a period of 0.053 d and a period spike just above this period. The number density monotonically decreased toward the longer period and there was no strong indication of a period gap. We detected possible negative superhumps in Z Cha. It is possible that normal outbursts are also suppressed by the presence of a disk tilt in this system. There was no indication of enhanced orbital humps just preceding the superoutburst, and this result favors the thermal-tidal disk instability as the origin of superoutbursts. We detected superhumps in three AM CVn-type dwarf novae. Our observations and recent other detections suggest that 8% of objects showing dwarf nova-type outbursts are AM CVn-type objects. AM CVn-type objects and EI Psc-type object may be more abundant than previously recognized. OT J213806, a WZ Sge-type object, exhibited a remarkably different feature between the 2010 and 2014 superoutbursts. Although the 2014 superoutburst was much fainter the plateau phase was shorter than the 2010 one, the course of the rebrightening phase was similar. This object indicates that the O-C diagrams of superhumps can be indeed variable at least in WZ Sge-type objects. Four deeply eclipsing SU UMa-type dwarf novae (ASASSN-13cx, ASASSN-14ag, ASASSN-15bu, NSV 4618) were identified. We studied long-term trends in supercycles in MM Hya and CY UMa and found systematic variations of supercycles of ~20%.

Supersymmetric compactification with moderately large radius (${\rm Re}< T > \sim {\cal O}(10)$ or more) not only accommodates supersymmetric unification, but also provides candidates for an inflaton in the form of geometric moduli; the value of ${\rm Re}< T > > 1$ may be used as a parameter that brings corrections to the inflaton potential under control. Motivated by a bottom-up idea "right-handed sneutrino inflation" scenario, we study whether complex structure moduli can play some role during the slow-roll inflation and/or reheating process in this moderately large radius regime. Even when we allow a tuning introduced by Kallosh and Linde, the barrier of volume stabilization potential from gaugino condensation racetrack superpotential can hardly be as high as $(10^{16} \; {\rm GeV})^4$ for generic choice of parameters in this regime. It is also found that even very small deformation of complex structure during inflation/reheating distorts the volume stabilization potential, so that the volume stabilization imposes tight constraints on large-field inflation scenario involving evolution of complex structure moduli. A few ideas of satisfying those constraints in string theory are also discussed.

During the rising branch of the main superoutburst, we detected growing superhumps (stage A superhumps) with a period of 0.03409(1) d. During the plateau phase of the superoutburst, superhumps with a shorter period (stage B superhumps) were observed. Using the orbital period and the period of the stage A superhumps, we were able to measure the dynamical precession rate of the accretion disk at the 3:1 resonance, and obtained a mass ratio (q) of 0.041(7). This is the first successful measurement of the mass ratio in an AM CVn-type object using the recently developed stage A superhump method. The value is generally in good agreement with the theoretical evolutionary model. The orbital period of J0902 is the longest among the outbursting AM CVn-type objects, and the borderline between the outbursting systems and systems with stable cool disks appears to be longer than had been supposed.

We also discuss the testability of the scenario by detecting high frequency gravitational waves from PBHs.
