Various studies have shown that the late acceleration of the universe can be caused by the bulk viscosity associated with dark matter. But recently, it was indicated that a cosmological constant is essential for maintaining Near Equilibrium Conditions (NEC) for the bulk viscous matter during the accelerated expansion of the universe. In the present study, we investigate a model of the universe composed of mixed dark matter components, with viscous dark matter (vDM), and inviscid cold dark matter (CDM) as it's constituents, in the context of $f(R,T)$ gravity and showed that the model predicts late acceleration by satisfying NEC throughout the evolution, without cosmological constant. We have also compared the model predictions with combined Type Ia Supernovae and observational Hubble data sets and thereby determined the estimated values of different cosmological parameters.

Recent studies indicate that, near equilibrium condition could not be maintained for bulk viscous matter models during the accelerated expansion of the universe in the context of Einstein's gravity, without including the cosmological constant. But from our investigation in $f(R,T)$ gravity, it is observed that, this condition can be satisfied in this modified gravity regime by properly constraining the coupling and viscous parameters. Accordingly, strict constraints are developed for free parameters in bulk viscous models in $f(R,T)=R+2λT$ gravity based on fulfillment near equilibrium condition. Then, for assessing the validity of NEC during different stages of evolution, two cosmological models are studied for each case based on the developed constraints. Initially, the data analysis of the models is performed using the Observational Hubble Data (OHD) and then later, model showing the best result is analyzed using combined OHD+SNe Ia data sets. From the obtained best fit values of model parameters, inferences are made regarding the possibilities of achieving recent acceleration for viscous models in $R+2λT$ gravity while simultaneously satisfying the required conditions both in the presence and absence of cosmological constant.

Recently, Barrow accounts for the quantum gravitational effects to the black hole surface. Thus the conventional area-entropy relation has modified, $S=(A/A_{0})^{1+Δ/2},$ with an exponent $Δ$, ranges $0\leΔ\le1$, quantifies the amount of quantum gravitational deformation effect to the black hole surface. In recent literature, this horizon entropy has been extended to the cosmological context. Following this, we consider an n+1 dimensional non-flat universe with an apparent horizon as the boundary with appropriate temperature and associated entropy is Barrow entropy. We derived the modified form of the law of emergence from the equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamic principles. Later studied the entropy maximization condition due to the modified law of emergence. On distinguishing the obtained result, it speculates that in order to hold the energy-momentum conservation, the universe with Barrow entropy as the horizon entropy should have non-equilibrium behaviour with an additional entropy production. However, the additional entropy production rate decreases over time, so the system eventually approaches equilibrium. Because of this, the constraint relation for entropy maximization looks similar for both equilibrium and non-equilibrium approaches.

The phenomenologically emergent dark energy (PEDE) model is a varying dark energy model with no extra degrees of freedom proposed by Li and Shafieloo\citep{Li_2019} to alleviate the Hubble tension. The statistical consistency of the model has been discussed by many authors. Since the model depicts a phantom dark energy that increases with redshift, its cosmic evolution, particularly during the late phase, must be examined. We discover that the model's Hubble and deceleration parameters display unusual behaviour in the future, which differs from $Λ$CDM cosmology. We find the model also follows a distinct evolution in the statefinder plane. The phantom nature of the model leads to the violation of the null energy condition and a decrease in horizon entropy. The asymptotic future epoch also seems to be unstable based on our dynamical system analysis as well as the stability analysis based on dark energy sound speed.

Neutrinos can acquire both dynamic and geometric phases due to the non-trivial mixing between mass and flavour eigenstates. In this article, we derive the general expressions for all plausible gauge invariant diagonal and off-diagonal geometric phases in the three flavour neutrino model using the kinematic approach. We find that diagonal and higher order off-diagonal geometric phases are sensitive to the mass ordering and the Dirac CP violating phase $δ$. We show that, third order off-diagonal geometric phase ($Φ_{μeτ}$) is invariant under any cyclic or non-cyclic permutations of flavour indices when the Dirac CP phase is zero. For non-zero $δ$, we find that $Φ_{μeτ}(δ)=Φ_{e μτ}(-δ)$. Further, we explore the effects of matter background using a two flavour neutrino model and show that the diagonal geometric phase is either 0 or $π$ in the MSW resonance region and takes non-trivial values elsewhere. The transition between zero and $π$ occurs at the point of complete oscillation inversion called the nodal point, where the diagonal geometric phase is not defined. Also, in two flavour approximations, two distinct diagonal geometric phases are co-functions with respect to the mixing angle. Finally, in the two flavour model, we show that the only second order off-diagonal geometric phase is a topological invariant quantity and is always $π$.

In this paper, we obtain the law of emergence with Tsallis entropy from the thermodynamic laws. We first derive the law of emergence from the equilibrium description of the unified first law and Clausius relation. However, it has been shown that considering Tsallis entropy as the horizon entropy, the Clausius relation $δQ=T dS$ does not hold due to non-equilibrium thermodynamics and is replaced by the entropy-balance relation $dS=\frac{δQ}{T}+d_{i}S$, where $d_iS$ is the additional entropy produced due to the irreversible thermodynamic process. Hence, we derive the law of emergence from the non-equilibrium description of thermodynamic laws. The comparison between the law of emergence in both cases shows that the law of emergence from the non-equilibrium approach describes the expansion of the universe in terms of the areal volume, unlike the effective volume in the equilibrium case. We have further shown that the law of emergence also satisfies the condition of the maximization of entropy for a de Sitter universe; thus, the entropy of the universe evolves to a bounded value in the asymptotic future.

The expansion law proposed by Padmanabhan suggests that the evolution of the volume of the horizon is due to the difference between the degrees of freedom on the horizon and the degrees of freedom in the bulk enclosed by the horizon. In formulating this law, Padmanabhan used the temperature, $T=H/2π$, for a dynamical expansion. In this work, we modified the expansion law using Kodama-Hayward temperature, the dynamical temperature, for the horizon, first in (3+1) Einstein's gravity and extended it to higher order gravity theories such as (n+1) Einstein gravity, Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and more general Lovelock gravity. Contrary to the conventional approach, we expressed degrees of freedom of the horizon in terms of the surface energy of the horizon. Also, we have expressed modified expansion law in terms of cosmic components. It then turns out that it is possible to express the modified expansion law in a form as if $T=H/2π$ is the temperature of the dynamical horizon.

We derive a unified expansion law for our universe from the first law of thermodynamics on the apparent horizon, where entropic evolution depicts the emergence of cosmic space. The derivation advances a general form for degrees of freedom on the surface and bulk, which provides a natural generalization for the expansion law proposed by Padmanabhan. The general expression for the surface degrees of freedom differs from the natural expectation, $ N_{sur }= 4S $ in the emergent gravity paradigm for general theories of gravity. The derivation also provides justification for the selection of Gibbons-Hawking temperature in the original expansion law and for the use of areal volume in the non-flat FRW universe. Since the unified expansion law exclusively depends on the form of entropy, the method is applicable to obtain the expansion law in any gravity theory without any additional ad hoc assumptions. From the general expansion law, we have obtained the expansion law corresponding to different theories of gravity like (n+1) Einstein, Gauss-Bonnet, Lovelock, and Horava-Lifshitz. We also obtained the expansion law for non-extensive entropy like Tsallis entropy from the unified expansion law.

This article investigates the relationship between the holographic principle and the laws of thermodynamics in explaining the late-time acceleration of the universe. First, we explore the possibilities of generating the standard holographic dark energy (SHDE) from the laws of horizon thermodynamics. Except for entropies that follow an exponent stretched area law, unless we redefine the horizon temperature, we found it challenging to construct a one-to-one correspondence between the dark energies defined by the holographic principle and the laws of thermodynamics. Secondly, in SHDE models, unless we invoke some phenomenological interactions, it is impossible to explain the late-time cosmic acceleration with the Hubble horizon as the IR cutoff. On the other hand, it is possible to induce dark energy as an integration constant using the laws of thermodynamics on the Hubble horizon. These motivated us to explore a feasible way to invoke the holographic principle from the laws of horizon thermodynamics. We show that the additional terms that appear in the modified Friedmann equations on using entropies other than the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in the first law of thermodynamics can behave like a dynamic holographic dark energy (HDE). We study the features of such an HDE with Rényi entropy as the choice without considering any non-standard interactions. Interestingly, the resulting form of dark energy reduces to the standard cosmological constant when Rényi entropy reduces to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. By examining different parameters, we affirm the validity of our approach to dark energy, which respects both holographic principle and thermodynamics.

The recent research on the connection between gravity and thermodynamics suggests that gravity could be an emergent phenomenon. Following this, Padmanabhan proposed a novel idea that the expansion of the universe can be interpreted as equivalent to the emergence of space with the progress of cosmic time. In this approach, the expansion of the universe is described by what is known as the law of emergence, which states that the expansion of the universe is driven by the difference between the number of bulk and surface degrees of freedom in a region bounded by the Hubble radius. This principle correctly reproduces the standard evolution of a Friedmann universe. We establish the connection of the law of emergence, which is conceptually different from the conventional paradigm to describe cosmology, with other well-established results in thermodynamics. It has been shown that the law of emergence can be derived from the unified first law of thermodynamics, which can then be considered as the backbone of the law. However, the law of emergence is rich in structure than implied by the First law thermodynamics alone. It further explains the evolution of the universe towards a state of maximum horizon entropy. Following this, it can be considered that the first law of thermodynamics, along with the additional constraints imposed by the maximisation of the horizon entropy, can together lead to the law of emergence. In the present article, we first make a brief review of Padmanabhan's proposal and then studies its connection with the thermodynamics of the horizon in the context of Einstein's, Gauss-Bonnet, and more general Lovelock gravity theories.

We study the late acceleration of the universe by incorporating bulk viscous matter with the running vacuum. The vacuum energy density varies as the squares of the Hubble parameter ($ρ_Λ\propto H^2$), and the coefficient of bulk viscosity of matter is proportional to the velocity of expansion ($ξ\propto H$). We obtained an analytical solution to the Friedmann equations and estimated the model parameters using the combined data set SN1a+CMB+BAO+OHD. We have evaluated the universe's age as 14 Gyr, which is slightly higher than the age-predicted by the $Λ$CDM model. However, it is an improved result compared to the age-predicted by a class of bulk viscous matter-dominated models. Interestingly, we have obtained the coefficient of bulk viscosity of the matter component as $1.316\times 10^5$ kg $\textnormal m^{-1}$ $\textnormal s^{-1}$ which is one to two orders of magnitude less than the value predicted by most of the bulk viscous matter-dominated models and it falls in the range of highly viscous materials found on the earth. The Hubble parameter is a decreasing function of the scale factor, and it attains a constant value in the far future that corresponds to an end deSitter phase of evolution. The deceleration parameter shows a transition from matter-dominated decelerated phase to vacuum energy-dominated accelerating phase, and the transition redshift is obtained as $z_T = 0.73$. The statefinder analysis distinguishes our model from the $Λ$CDM model at present, and the $r-s$ trajectory reveals the quintessence behaviour of the vacuum energy. The phase space analysis shows that the universe is evolving towards a mechanically stable state in the far future. The entropy evolution satisfies the generalised second law of thermodynamics, and the entropy is maximised in the far future evolution.

Recently, Barrow holographic dark energy (BHDE), based on Barrow entropy, has been proposed to describe the late acceleration of the universe. Contrary to the earlier analysis of this model in the literature, we consider the BHDE with the Granda-Oliveros length as IR cut-off, as a dynamical vacuum, having a constant equation of state $ω_Λ=-1.$ We have analytically solved for the Hubble parameter and studied the evolution of cosmological parameters. The model is compared with the observational data on Hubble parameter (OHD36) and Supernovae type Ia (SN Ia), the pantheon data. In the absence of interaction between the dark sectors, we found that the model predicts a $Λ$CDM like evolution of the universe with an effective cosmological constant. In this case, the model is found to satisfy the generalized second law (GSL), irrespective of the value of the Barrow index. The interaction also shows the safe validity of GSL, for the extracted value of the Barrow index, $Δ=0.063\pm 0.029$. The thermodynamic analysis of the model predicts an end de Sitter phase of maximum entropy. We performed a dynamical system analysis, which reveals that the end de Sitter phase is stable. Furthermore, we performed the Information Criterion analysis using Akaike and Bayesian Information Criterion to compare the statistical compatibility of the present model with the standard $Λ$CDM model.

We introduce a generic derivation of the expansion law from the generalized first law of thermodynamics $-dE=TdS$ and $dE=TdS + WdV$. The generic derivation provides an expression for $N_{sur}$ in terms of entropy $S$ and the expansion law consistent with gravity theories having different entropy $S$, like Gauss-Bonnet and more general Lovelock gravity. We extended the same idea to the non-equilibrium situation and obtained the expansion law in f(R) gravity as a specific case. For this, we used the first law of thermodynamics in non-equilibrium description having the extra entropy production term $Td_{i}S.$

We consider the interacting Tsallis Holographic Dark Energy (THDE), with the Granda-Oliveros (GO) scale as the infrared (IR) cutoff, as dynamical vacuum. We analytically solved for the Hubble parameter, in a spatially flat FLRW universe with dark energy and matter as components, and the solution traces the evolutionary path from the prior decelerated to the late accelerated epoch. Without interaction, the model predicts a $Λ$CDM like behavior with an effective cosmological constant. We used Pantheon Supernovae type Ia, observational Hubble data (OHD), cosmic microwave background (CMB), and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data to constrain the free parameters of the model. The estimated values of the cosmological parameters were consistent with observational results. We analyzed the behavior of the model using the statefinder and $ω^\prime_{e}-ω_{e}$ plane where $ω_{e}$ and $ω^\prime_{e}$ corresponds to the effective equation of state and its evolution, respectively. The model shows a quintessence behavior in general, and the model trajectory ends in a point that corresponds to the de Sitter phase. We performed a dynamical analysis of the model, concluding that the prior decelerated and late accelerated phases are unstable and stable equilibria, respectively. We also investigated the thermodynamical nature of the model and found that the generalized second law remains valid in the dynamical vacuum treatment of the model.

Marginalizing over all model parameters with suitable prior, we have obtained the Bayes factor as the ratio of Bayesian evidence of our model and the $Λ$CDM model. The analysis based on Jeffrey's scale of bayesian inference shows that the evidence of our model against the $Λ$CDM model is weak for both data combinations. Even though the running vacuum model gives a good account of the evolution of the universe, it is not superior to the $Λ$CDM model.

In this article, we investigate the properties exhibited by PBP in neutrino mixing. We map the neutrino flavour modes to independent flavour vacuum states and compute PBP using Bargmann invariant. We derive the exact formula for PBP in two flavour approximation using the kinematic approach. Our result reproduces previous results of Blasone et al. under cyclic condition. Inspired by the work of Mukunda and Simon, we investigate the total and dynamical phases separately. This method leads us to identify the existence of nodal points in the mixing parameter space. At nodal points, PBP changes by a value $π$, and it originates from the total phase. We report the direct relation between nodal points and MSW resonance, giving physical meaning to nodal points. Our analysis shows the ability of PBP to differentiate between different mass hierarchies and set numerical bounds to $Δm^2$ by changing total energy. We extend our studies to three flavour model and found that PBP is sensitive to the Dirac $CP$ phase ($δ_{CP}$). Using our $N$-qubit architecture of the $N$-flavour neutrino model, one can immediately study the dynamical characteristics like mode entanglement between neutrino flavour modes.

The bulk viscosity and relaxation time are taken as $ξ=αρ^s$ and $τ=\fracα{εγ(2-γ)}ρ^{s-1}$ respectively. For $s=1/2,$ we found an analytical solution for the Hubble parameter of the model. We have estimated the model parameters by treating $γ=1$ and $γ$ as a free parameter using the latest cosmological data.
The model predicts a prior decelerated phase and an end de Sitter phase as in the standard $Λ$CDM model. The dynamical system analysis shows that the prior decelerated epoch is an unstable equilibrium, while the far future de Sitter epoch is stable. The age of the Universe obtained around $13.66$ Gyr, which is close to the recent observations. The second law of thermodynamics is found to be satisfied throughout the evolution in this model. The feasibility of the model has been checked by contrasting with models based on the full Israel-Stewart and the Eckart viscous theories. The truncated viscous model appears more compatible with astronomical observations than the Eckart and full causal viscous models.

The spatial expansion of the universe can be described as the emergence of space with the progress of cosmic time, through a simple equation, $ΔV = Δt\left(N_{surf}- N_{bulk}\right)$. This law of emergence suggested by Padmanabhan in the context of general relativity for a flat universe has been generalized by Sheykhi to Gauss Bonnet and Lovelock gravity for a universe with any spacial curvature. We investigate whether this generalized holographic equipartition effectively implies the maximization of horizon entropy. First, we obtain the constraints imposed by the maximization of horizon entropy in Einstein, Gauss Bonnet and Lovelock gravities for a universe with any spacial curvature. We then analyze the consistency of the law of emergence in \cite{Sheykhi}, with these constraints obtained. Interestingly, both the law of emergence and the horizon entropy maximization demands an asymptotically de Sitter universe with $ω\geq -1$. More specifically, when the degrees of freedom in the bulk $( N_{bulk})$ becomes equal to the degrees of freedom on the boundary surface $(N_{surf}),$ the universe attains a state of maximum horizon entropy. Thus, the law of emergence can be viewed as a tendency for maximizing the horizon entropy, even in a non flat universe. Our results points at the deep connection between the law of emergence and horizon thermodynamics, beyond Einstein gravity irrespective of the spacial curvature.

The emergence of cosmic space as cosmic time progresses is an exciting idea advanced by Padmanabhan to explain the accelerated expansion of the universe. The generalization of Padmanabhan's conjecture to the non-flat universe has resulted in scepticism about the choice of volume such that the law of emergence can not be appropriately formulated if one uses proper invariant volume. The deep connection between the first law of thermodynamics and the law of emergence \cite{mahith}, motivate us to explore the status of the first law in a non-flat universe when one uses proper invariant volume. We have shown that the first law of thermodynamics, $dE = TdS +WdV$ cannot be formulated properly for a non-flat universe using proper invariant volume. We have also investigated the status of the first law of the form $-dE = TdS$ in a non-flat universe. We have shown that the energy change dE within the horizon and the outward energy flux are not equivalent to each other in a non-flat universe when we use the proper invariant volume. We have further shown that the consistency between the above two forms of the first law claimed in Ref. \cite{caiakb} will hold only with the use of the areal volume of the horizon. Thus, a consistent formulation of the above two forms of the first law of thermodynamics demands the use of areal volume.

Holographic Ricci dark energy evolving through its interaction with dark matter is a natural choice for the running vacuum energy model. We have analyzed the relative significance of two versions of this model in the light of SNIa, CMB, BAO and Hubble data sets using the method Bayesian inferences. The first one, model 1, is the running holographic Ricci dark energy (rhrde) having a constant additive term in its density form and the second is one, model 2, having no additive constant, instead the interaction of rhrde with dark matter is accounted through a phenomenological coupling term. The Bayes factor of these models in comparison with the standard $Λ$CDM have been obtained by calculating the likelihood of each model for four different data combinations, SNIa(307)+CMB+BAO, SNIa(307)+CMB+BAO+Hubble data, SNIa(580)+CMB+BAO and SNIa(580)+CMB+BAO+Hubble data. Suitable flat priors for the model parameters has been assumed for calculating the likelihood in both cases. Our analysis shows that, according to the Jeffreys scale, the evidence for $Λ$CDM against both model 1 and model 2 is very strong as the Bayes factor of both models are much less than one for all the data combinations.

We have analytically solved the equation of emergence proposed by Padmanabhan by assuming the Komar energy density $ρ+3P$ as a function of the Hubble parameter. The resulting model describes the evolution of the universe, which proceeds towards a final de Sitter state. Model parameters have been extracted using the cosmological observational data. Further, the horizon entropy evolution of the model has been studied. The model predicts a universe having a transition from a prior decelerated epoch to a late accelerated epoch and reasonably predicts the cosmological constant.

We explore whether this novel idea proposed by Padmanabhan give any additional insights into the nature of dark energy. In particular, we obtain the constraints imposed by the law of emergence on the equation of state parameter, $ω$. We also present a thermodynamic motivation for the obtained constraints on $ω$. Further, we explicitly prove the feasibility of describing a dynamic dark energy model through the law of emergence. Interestingly, both holographic equipartition and the entropy maximization demands an asymptotically de Sitter universe with $ω\geq-1$, rather than a pure cosmological constant.

We show that the modified expansion law of the universe proposed by Sheykhi in a non-flat Friedmann- Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe and by Cai in a flat FRW universe could be derived starting from the first law of thermodynamics, in (n+1) dimensional Einstein gravity, Gauss-Bonnet and more general Lovelock gravity theories. We have also derived the modified versions of the expansion law for a flat universe due to Yang et al, in the case of Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravities, from the first law of thermodynamics. This approach is unique in the sense that all these modified versions of the expansion law is derived from a thermodynamic identity that has the same form regardless of the gravity theory and irrespective of whether the universe is flat or non-flat

The dynamical system behaviour and thermal evolution of a homogeneous and isotropic dissipative universe are analyzed.
The dissipation is driven by the bulk viscosity $ξ= αρ^s $ and the evolution of bulk viscous pressure is described using the full causal Israel-Stewart theory. We find that for $s=1/2$ the model possesses a prior decelerated epoch which is unstable and a stable future accelerated epoch. From the thermodynamic analysis, we have verified that the local as well as the generalised second law of thermodynamics are satisfied throughout the evolution of the universe. We also show that the convexity condition $S''<0$ is satisfied at the end stage of the universe which implies an upper bound to the evolution of the entropy. For $s\neq1/2,$ the case $s<1/2$ is ruled out since it does not predict the conventional evolutionary stages of the universe. On the other hand, the case $s>1/2$ does imply a prior decelerated and a late de Sitter epochs, but both of them are unstable fixed points. The thermal evolution corresponding to the same case implies that GSL is satisfied at both the epochs but convexity condition is violated by both, so that entropy growth is unbounded. Hence for $s>1/2$ the model does not give a stable evolution of the universe.

Earlier studies have shown that, in a two component model of the universe with dark matter and the running vacuum energy which is phenomenologically a combination of $H^2$ and $\dot{H},$ produces either eternal deceleration or acceleration in the absence of a bare constant in the density of the running vacuum. In this paper we have shown that, in the interaction scenario, where the interaction between matter and vacuum is introduced through a phenomenological term, the two component model is capable of causing a transition from a prior decelerated to a later accelerated epoch without a bare constant in the running vacuum density. On contrasting the model with the cosmological data, we have found that the interaction coupling constant, is small enough, for a slow decay of the running vacuum. The model is subjected to dynamical system analysis which revealed that the end de Sitter phase of the model is a stable one. We did an analysis on the thermal behavior of the system, which shows that the entropy is bounded at the end stage so that the system is behaving like an ordinary macroscopic system. Apart from these we have also performed the state finder diagnostic analysis which implies the quintessence nature of running vacuum and confirms that the model will approach the standard $Λ$CDM in the future.

The accelerated expansion of the universe can be interpreted as a quest for satisfying holographic equipartition. It can be expressed by a simple law, $ΔV = Δt\left(N_{surf}- N_{bulk}\right)$ which leads to the standard Friedmann equation. This novel idea suggested by Padmanabhan in the context of general relativity has been generalized by Cai and Yang et al. to Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravities for a spatially flat universe in different methods. We investigate the consistency of these generalizations with the constraints imposed by the maximum entropy principle. Interestingly, both these generalizations imply entropy maximization even if their basic assumptions are different. Further, we analyze the consistency of Verlinde's emergent gravity with the maximum entropy principle in the cosmological context. In particular, we consider the generalization suggested by Shu and Gong, in which an energy flux through the horizon is assumed, in addition. Even though the conceptual formulations are different, these two emergent perspectives of gravity describes a universe which behaves as an ordinary macroscopic system. Our results provide further support to the emergent gravity paradigm.

Evolution of the bulk viscous matter dominated universe has been analysed using the full causal, Israel-Stewart theory for the evolution of bulk viscous pressure in the context of recent acceleration of the universe. The form of bulk viscosity is taken as $ξ=αρ^{1/2}. $ We obtained analytical solutions for the Hubble parameter and scale factor of the universe. The model parameters have been computed using the Type Ia supernovae observational data. The evolution of the prominent cosmological parameters were obtained. The age of the universe for the best estimated model parameters is found to be less than observational value. The viscous matter behaves like stiff fluid in the early evolutionary phase and then evolves to a negative pressure fluid in the later phase. The equation of state is found to be stabilized with value $ω>-1$ and thus, the model is not showing any of the phantom behaviour during the evolution. The local as well as generalized second law of thermodynamics are satisfied in this model, while it was shown by many that the local second law is breaking in the Eckart formalism approach. The statefinder geometric diagnostic shows that the present model is distinct from the standard $Λ$CDM model of the universe. One of the marked deviation seen in this model compared to a corresponding model using Eckart approach is that the bulk viscosity decreases with expansion of the universe, while in it increases from negative value in the early universe towards positive values values in the Eckart formalism.

It is found that all the three cases predicts the late acceleration of the universe. However, a conventional realistic behaviour of the universe, i.e., a universe having an initial radiation dominated phase and then followed by decelerated matter dominated phase and then finally evolving to accelerated epoch, is shown only when $ζ= ζ_{0}$, a constant. For the other two cases, it does not show either a prior conventional radiation dominated phase or a matter dominated phase of the universe.

We have analytically solved the Friedmann equations and also the role played by the general conservation law followed by the cosmic components together. We have shown that the running vacuum energy status of the Ricci dark energy helps to remove the possible future singularity in the model. The additive constant in the density of the running vacuum played an important role, such that, without that, the model predicts either eternal deceleration or eternal acceleration. But along with the additive constant, equivalent to a cosmological constant, the model predicts a late time acceleration in the expansion of the universe, and in the far future of the evolution it tends to de Sitter universe.

We consider a cosmological model dominated by bulk viscous matter with total bulk viscosity coefficient proportional to the velocity and acceleration of the expansion of the universe in such a way that $ζ=ζ_{0}+ζ_{1}\frac{\dot{a}}{a}+ζ_{2}\frac{\ddot{a}}{\dot{a}}.$ We show that there exist two limiting conditions in the bulk viscous coefficients, ($ζ_{0}$, $ζ_{1}$, $ζ_{2}$) which corresponds to a universe having a Big-Bang at the origin, followed by an early decelerated epoch and then making a smooth transition into an accelerating epoch. We have constrained the model using the type Ia Supernovae data, evaluated the best estimated values of all the bulk viscous parameters and the Hubble parameter corresponding to the two limiting conditions. We found that even though the evolution of the cosmological parameters are in general different for the two limiting cases, they show identical behavior for the best estimated values of the parameters from both the limiting conditions. A recent acceleration would occur if $\tildeζ_{0}+\tildeζ_{1}>1$ for the first limiting conditions and if $\tildeζ_{0}+\tildeζ_{1}<1$ for the second limiting conditions. The age of the universe predicted by this model is found to be less than that predicted from the oldest galactic globular clusters. The total bulk viscosity seems to be negative in the past and becomes positive when $z\leq0.8$. So the model violates the local second law of thermodynamics. However, the model satisfies the generalized second law of thermodynamics at the apparent horizon throughout the evolution of the universe. We also made a statefinder analysis of the model and found that it is distinguishably different from the standard $Λ$CDM model at present, but shows a de Sitter type behavior in the far future of the evolution.

We consider a cosmological model dominated by stiff fluid with a constant bulk viscosity. We classify all the possible cases of the universe predicted by the model and analyzing the scale factor, density as well as the curvature scalar. We find that when the dimensionless constant bulk viscous parameter is in the range $0 < \barζ<6$ the model began with a Big Bang, and make a transition form the decelerating expansion epoch to an accelerating epoch, then tends to the de Sitter phase as $ t\to \infty$. The transition into the accelerating epoch would be in the recent past, when $4<\barζ<6.$ For $\barζ>6$ the model doesn't have a Big Bang and suffered an increase in the fluid density and scalar curvature as the universe expands, which are eventually saturates as the scale factor $a \to \infty$ in the future. We have analyzed the model with statefinder diagnostics and find that the model is different from $Λ$CDM model but approaches $Λ$CDM point as $a \to \infty.$ We have also analyzed the status of the generalized second law of thermodynamics with apparent horizon as the boundary of the universe and found that the law is generally satisfied when $0 \leq \barζ<6$ and for $\barζ>6$ the law is satisfied when the scale factor is larger than a minimum value.

In this paper we have considered the holographic dark energy and studied it's cosmology and thermodynamics. We have analysed the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics in a flat universe consists of interacting dark energy and dark matter. We did the analysis both under thermal equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions. If the apparent horizon is taken as the boundary of the universe, we have shown that the rate of change of the total entropy of the universe is proportional to $(1+q)^2,$ which in fact shows that the GSL is valid at the apparent horizon irrespective of the sign of $q,$ the deceleration parameter. Hence for any form of dark energy the apparent horizon can be considered as a perfect thermodynamic boundary of the universe. We made a confirmation of this conclusion by using the holographic dark energy. When event horizon is taken as the boundary, we found that the GSL is only partially satisfied. The analysis under non-equilibrium conditions revealed that the GSL is satisfied if the dark energy temperature is greater than the temperature of dark matter.

We explore the validity of the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics in flat FRW universe with apparent horizon and event horizon as the boundary. We found that in a universe with holographic Ricci dark energy and dark matter, interacting with each other, the GSL is satisfied at the apparent horizon and partially satisfied at the event horizon under thermal equilibrium conditions. We also analyses the GSL under non-equilibrium conditions and shows that the fulfillment of GSL at the apparent horizon implies that the temperature of the dark energy is greater than that of the horizon. Thus there occurs a flow of dark energy towards the apparent horizon. As a result the entropy of the dark energy decreases and that of horizon increases. This is verified by finding the evolution of the dark energy entropy and horizon entropy in a dark energy dominated universe under non-equilibrium conditions.

In this work we have considered the modified holographic Ricci dark energy interacting with dark matter through a non-gravitational coupling. We took three phenomenological forms for the interaction term $Q$ in the model, where in general $Q$ is proportional to the Hubble parameter and densities of the dark sectors, $ρ_{de}+ρ_m, \, ρ_m$ and $ρ_{de}$ respectively. We have obtained analytical solutions for the three interacting models, and studied the evolutions of equations of state parameter, deceleration parameter. The results are compared with the observationally constrained values for the best parameters of the model. We have also done the statefinder analysis of the model to discriminate the model from other standard models. In general we have shown that the model is showing a de Sitter type behavior in the far future of the evolution of the universe.

We discuss the generalized second law (GSL) and the constraints imposed by it for two types of Friedmann universes. The first one is the Friedmann universe with radiation and a positive cosmological constant, and the second one consists of non-relativistic matter and a positive cosmological constant. The time evolution of the event horizon entropy and the entropy of the contents within the horizon are analyses in an analytical way by obtaining the Hubble parameter. It is shown that the GSL constraint the temperature of both the radiation and matter of the Friedmann universe. It is also shown that, even though the net entropy of the radiation (or matter) is decreasing at sufficiently large times as the universe expand, it exhibit an increase during the early times when universe is decelerating. That is the entropy of the radiation within the comoving volume is decreasing only when the universe has got an event horizon.

Evolution of the universe with modified holographic Ricci dark energy model is considered. Dependency of the equation of state parameter and deceleration parameter on the redshift and model parameters are obtained. It is shown that the density evolution of both non-relativistic matter and dark energy are the same until recent times. The evolutionary trajectories of the model for different model parameters are obtained in the statefinder planes, r-s and r-q planes. The present statefinder parameters are obtained for different model parameter values, using that the model is differentiated from other standard models like $Λ$CDM model etc. We have also shown that the evolutionary trajectories are depending on the model parameters, and at past times the dark energy is behaving like cold dark matter, with equation of state equal to zero.
