Local discrete functions are solutions to a heat equation problem with polynomial data. Global virtual element spaces are nonconforming in space, so that the analysis and the design of the method are independent of the spatial dimension. The information between time slabs is transmitted by means of upwind terms involving polynomial projections of the discrete functions. We prove $hp$-optimal error estimates for interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods (IPDG) for the biharmonic problem with homogeneous essential boundary conditions. We consider tensor product-type meshes in two and three dimensions, and triangular meshes in two dimensions. An essential ingredient in the analysis is the construction of a global $H^2$ piecewise polynomial approximants with $hp$-optimal approximation properties over the given meshes. The $hp$-optimality is also discussed for $\mathcal C^0$-IPDG in two and three dimensions, and the stream formulation of the Stokes problem in two dimensions. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical predictions and reveal that $p$-suboptimality occurs in presence of singular essential boundary conditions.

The proposed error estimators are reliable and efficient for the $h$-, $p$-, and $hp$-versions of the VEM. This solves a partial limitation of our former approach in [6], which was based on solving local nonhybridized mixed problems. Differently from the finite element setting, the proof of the efficiency turns out to be simpler, as the flux reconstruction in the VEM does not require the existence of polynomial, stable, divergence right-inverse operators. Rather, we only need to construct right-inverse operators in virtual element spaces, exploiting only the implicit definition of virtual element functions. The theoretical results are validated by some numerical experiments on a benchmark problem.

We address the issue of the suboptimality in the p-version discontinuous Galerkin (dG) methods for first order hyperbolic problems. The convergence rate is derived for the upwind dG scheme on tensor product meshes in any dimension. The standard proof in seminal work [14] leads to suboptimal convergence in terms of the polynomial degree by 3/2 order for general convection fields, with the exception of piecewise multi-linear convection fields, which rather yield optimal convergence. Such suboptimality is not observed numerically. Thus, it might be caused by a limitation of the analysis, which we partially overcome: for a special class of convection fields, we shall show that the dG method has a p-convergence rate suboptimal by 1/2 order only.

In particular, we analyze the discrete inf-sup condition for different choices of the polynomial approximation order of the velocity and pressure approximation spaces. To this aim, we employ a generalized inf-sup condition with a pressure stabilization term. We also prove a priori hp-version error estimates in suitable norms. We numerically check the behaviour of the inf-sup constant and the order of convergence with respect to the mesh configuration, the mesh-size, and the polynomial degree. We introduce a residual-based a posteriori error estimator for a novel $hp$-version interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the biharmonic problem in two and three dimensions. We prove that the error estimate provides an upper bound and a local lower bound on the error, and that the lower bound is robust to the local mesh size but not the local polynomial degree. The suboptimality in terms of the polynomial degree is fully explicit and grows at most algebraically. Our analysis does not require the existence of a $\mathcal{C}^1$-conforming piecewise polynomial space and is instead based on an elliptic reconstruction of the discrete solution to the $H^2$ space and a generalised Helmholtz decomposition of the error. This is the first $hp$-version error estimator for the biharmonic problem in two and three dimensions. The practical behaviour of the estimator is investigated through numerical examples in two and three dimensions.

The key tool in the analysis is the existence of a bijection between Poisson-like and Stokes-like VE spaces for the velocities. This allows us to re-interpret the standard VEM for Stokes as a VEM, where the test and trial discrete velocities are sought in Poisson-like VE spaces. The upside of this fact is that we inherit from [7] an explicit analysis of best interpolation results in VE spaces, as well as stabilization estimates that are explicit in terms of the degree of accuracy of the method. We prove exponential convergence of the hp-VEM for Stokes problems with regular right-hand sides. We corroborate the theoretical estimates with numerical tests for both the p- and hp-versions of the method.

We present an hp-adaptive virtual element method (VEM) based on the hypercircle method of Prager and Synge for the approximation of solutions to diffusion problems. We introduce a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator, which is computed by solving an auxiliary global mixed problem. We show that the mixed VEM satisfies a discrete inf-sup condition, with inf-sup constant independent of the discretization parameters. Furthermore, we construct a stabilization for the mixed VEM, with explicit bounds in terms of the local degree of accuracy of the method. The theoretical results are supported by several numerical experiments, including a comparison with the residual a posteriori error estimator. The numerics exhibit the p-robustness of the proposed error estimator. In addition, we provide a first step towards the localized flux reconstruction in the virtual element framework, which leads to an additional reliable a posteriori error estimator that is computed by solving local (cheap-to-solve and parallelizable) mixed problems. We extend the nonconforming Trefftz virtual element method introduced in arXiv:1805.05634 to the case of the fluid-fluid interface problem, that is, a Helmholtz problem with piecewise constant wave number. With respect to the original approach, we address two additional issues: firstly, we define the coupling of local approximation spaces with piecewise constant wave numbers, secondly, we enrich such local spaces with special functions capturing the physical behaviour of the solution to the target problem. As these two issues are directly related to an increase of the number of degrees of freedom, we use a reduction strategy inspired by arXiv:1807.11237, which allows to mitigate the growth of the dimension of the approximation space when considering $h$- and $p$-refinements. This renders the new method highly competitive in comparison to other Trefftz and quasi-Trefftz technologies tailored for the Helmholtz problem with piecewise constant wave number. A wide range of numerical experiments, including the $p$-version with quasi-uniform meshes and the $hp$-version with isotropic and anisotropic mesh refinements, is presented.

The global trial and test spaces are not fully discontinuous, but rather interelement continuity is imposed in a nonconforming fashion. Although their functions are only implicitly defined, as typical of the VEM framework, they contain discontinuous subspaces made of functions known in closed form and with good approximation properties (plane waves, in our case). We carry out an abstract error analysis of the method, and derive $h$-version error estimates. Abstract:
We present numerical tests of the Virtual Element Method (VEM) tailored for the discretization of a three dimensional Poisson problem with high-order "polynomial" degree (up to $p=10$). Besides, we discuss possible reasons for which the method could return suboptimal-wrong error convergence curves. Among these motivations, we highlight ill-conditioning of the stiffness matrix and not particularly "clever" choices of the stabilizations. We propose variants of the definition of face/bulk degrees of freedom, as well as of stabilizations, which lead to methods that are much more robust in terms of numerical performances.

Ill-conditioning in the Virtual Element Method: stabilizations and bases
Authors:

Abstract:
In this paper we investigate the behavior of the condition number of the stiffness matrix resulting from the approximation of a 2D Poisson problem by means of the Virtual Element Method. It turns out that ill-conditioning appears when considering high-order methods or in presence of "bad-shaped" (for instance nonuniformly star-shaped, with small edges...) sequences of polygons. We show that in ord…

We show that in order to improve such condition number one can modify the definition of the internal moments by choosing proper polynomial functions that are not the standard monomials. We also give numerical evidence that, at least for a 2D problem, standard choices for the stabilization give similar results in terms of condition number.

We introduce the harmonic virtual element method (harmonic VEM), a modification of the virtual element method (VEM) for the approximation of the 2D Laplace equation using polygonal meshes. The main difference between the harmonic VEM and the VEM is that in the former method only boundary degrees of freedom are employed. Such degrees of freedom suffice for the construction of a proper energy projector on (piecewise harmonic) polynomial spaces. The harmonic VEM can also be regarded as an "$H^1$-conformisation" of the Trefftz discontinuous Galerkin-finite element method (TDG-FEM). We address the stabilization of the proposed method and develop an $hp$ version of harmonic VEM for the Laplace equation on polygonal domains. As in Trefftz DG-FEM, the asymptotic convergence rate of harmonic VEM is exponential and reaches order $\mathcal O ( \exp(-b\sqrt[2]{N}))$, where $N$ is the number of degrees of freedom. This result overperformes its counterparts in the framework of $hp$ FEM and $hp$ VEM, where the asymptotic rate of convergence is of order $\mathcal O ( \exp(-b\sqrt[3]{N}) )$.

We present a multigrid algorithm for the solution of the linear systems of equations stemming from the $p-$version of the Virtual Element discretization of a two-dimensional Poisson problem. The sequence of coarse spaces are constructed decreasing progressively the polynomial approximation degree of the Virtual Element space, as in standard $p$-multigrid schemes. The construction of the interspace operators relies on auxiliary Virtual Element spaces, where it is possible to compute higher order polynomial projectors. We prove that the multigrid scheme is uniformly convergent, provided the number of smoothing steps is chosen sufficiently large. We also demonstrate that the resulting scheme provides a uniform preconditioner with respect to the number of degrees of freedom that can be employed to accelerate the convergence of classical Krylov-based iterative schemes. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical results.

We prove exponential convergence of the energy error employing sequences of polygonal meshes geometrically refined, thus extending the classical choices for the decomposition in the $hp$ Finite Element framework to very general decomposition of the domain. A new stabilization for the discrete bilinear form with explicit bounds in $h$ and $p$ is introduced. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical results. We also exhibit a numerical comparison between $hp$ Virtual Elements and $hp$ Finite Elements.

Exponential convergence is proved in the case of analytic solutions. The theoretical convergence results are validated in numerical experiments. Finally, an initial study on the possible choice of local basis functions is included.
