We investigate quantum fluctuations of metric components in coherent 1/2-BPS bound states of $n_1$ fundamental strings and $n_5$ NS5-branes. The leading order contribution in an expansion in $1/(n_1n_5)$ is calculated via a combination of analytical and numerical methods. We find that the fluctuations are small away from a tiny distance from the source, comparable to the 6d Planck scale. Comparing this result with an analysis in the literature of fluctuations in the maximally mixed state, we conclude that the large fluctuations previously found for the latter are statistical rather than quantum in nature, and that perturbative string theory provides an accurate description of these backgrounds.

We study ensembles of 1/2-BPS bound states of fundamental strings and NS-fivebranes (NS5-F1 states) in the AdS decoupling limit. We revisit a solution corresponding to an ensemble average of these bound states, and find that the appropriate duality frame for describing the near-source structure is the T-dual NS5-P frame, where the bound state is a collection of momentum waves on the fivebranes. We find that the fivebranes are generically well-separated; this property results in the applicability of perturbative string theory. The geometry sourced by the typical microstate is not close to that of an extremal non-rotating black hole; instead the fivebranes occupy a ball whose radius is parametrically much larger than the "stretched horizon" scale of the corresponding black hole. These microstates are thus better characterized as BPS fivebrane stars than as small black holes.
When members of the ensemble spin with two fixed angular potentials about two orthogonal planes, we find that the spherical ball of the non-rotating ensemble average geometry deforms into an ellipsoid. This contrasts with ring structures obtained when fixing the angular momenta instead of the angular potentials; we trace this difference of ensembles to large fluctuations of the angular momentum in the ensemble of fixed angular potential.

Conical defects of the form $(AdS_3\times S^3)/Z_k$ have an exact orbifold description in worldsheet string theory, which we derive from their known presentation as gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models. The configuration of strings and fivebranes sourcing this geometry is well-understood, as is the correspondence to states/operators in the dual $CFT_2$. One can analytically continue the construction to Euclidean $AdS_3$ (i.e. $H_3^+$) and consider the orbifold by any infinite discrete (Kleinian) group generated by a set of elliptic (rotational) elements. The resulting geometry consists of multiple conical defects traveling along geodesics in $H_3^+$, and provides a semiclassical bulk description of correlation functions in the dual CFT involving the corresponding defect operators, which is nonperturbatively exact in $α'$. The Lorentzian continuation of these geometries describes a collection of defects colliding to make a BTZ black hole. We comment on a recent proposal to use such correlators to prepare a basis of black hole microstates, and elaborate on a picture of black hole formation and evaporation in terms of the underlying brane dynamics in the bulk.

The winding string sector thus provides a decay channel for the black hole to evaporate without having either to couple the system to an external reservoir or to match the AdS3 throat onto an asymptotically flat region. We compute the emission amplitude of this "holar wind" in the semi-classical approximation, and consider the associated version of the black hole information paradox.

The BPS sector in AdS_3/CFT_2 duality has been fertile ground for the exploration of gauge/gravity duality, from the match between black hole entropy and the CFT elliptic genus to the construction of large families of geometrical microstates and the identification of the corresponding states in the CFT. Worldsheet methods provide a tool to further explore the relation between string theory in the bulk and corresponding CFT quantities. We show how to match individual BPS strings to their counterparts in the symmetric product orbifold CFT. In the process, we find an exact match between known constructions of microstate geometries and condensates of BPS supergraviton strings, and discuss their role in the broader collection of BPS states. In particular, we explore how microstate geometries develop singularities; and how string theory resolves these singularities through the appearance of ``tensionless'' string dynamics, which is the continuation of structures found in the weak-coupling CFT into the strongly coupled regime described by string theory in the bulk. We argue that such ``tensionless'' strings are responsible for black hole microstructure in the bulk description.

The black-hole information paradox provides one of the sharpest foci for the conflict between quantum mechanics and general relativity and has become the proving-ground of would-be theories of quantum gravity. String theory has made significant progress in resolving this paradox, and has led to the fuzzball and microstate geometry programs. The core principle of these programs is that horizons and singularities only arise if one tries to describe gravity using a theory that has too few degrees of freedom to resolve the physics. String theory has sufficiently many degrees of freedom and this naturally leads to fuzzballs and microstate geometries: The reformation of black holes into objects with neither horizons nor singularities. This not only resolves the paradox but provides new insights into the microstructure of black holes. We summarize the current status of this approach and describe future prospects and additional insights that are now within reach. The black-hole information paradox provides a stringent test of would-be theories of quantum gravity. String theory has made significant progress toward a resolution of this paradox, and has led to the fuzzball and microstate geometry programs. The central thesis of these programs is that only string theory has sufficiently many degrees of freedom to resolve black-hole microstructure, and that horizons and singularities are artifacts of attempting to describe gravity using a theory that has too few degrees of freedom to resolve the physics. Fuzzballs and microstate geometries recast black holes within string theory as horizonless and singularity-free objects that not only resolve the paradox but provide new insight into the underlying microstructure. We give an overview of this approach, summarize its current status and describe future prospects and insights that are now within reach.

A Defect in AdS3/CFT2 Duality

▽ More
$AdS_3$ string theory in the stringy regime $k=(R_{AdS}/\ell_{str})^2 < 1$ provides a laboratory for the study of holography in which both sides of AdS/CFT duality are under fairly good control. Worldsheet string theory is solvable, and for closed strings the dual spacetime CFT is a deformation of a symmetric product orbifold. Here we extend this construction to include open strings by adding a probe D-string, described semi-classically by an $AdS_2$ D-brane in $AdS_3$. The dual defect or boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) is again a deformed symmetric product, which now describes the Fock space of long open and closed strings near the AdS boundary, with a boundary deformation implementing the open/closed transition in addition to the symmetric product ${\mathbb Z}_2$ twist deformation that implements closed string joining/splitting. The construction thus provides an explicit example of an $AdS_3/BCFT_2$ duality.

This companion paper to arXiv:2109.00065 explores the interpretation of $AdS_3/CFT_2$ duality for $k=(R_{AdS}/\lstr)^2<1$ in terms of "non-critical little string theory". We review the underlying fivebrane structure of 1/2-BPS backgrounds for string theory in both the critical dimension and for non-critical models. D-branes bound to the fivebranes in these backgrounds are associated to nonabelian little strings, and flesh out a picture of the correspondence transition at $k=1$ wherein the nonabelian little string excitations lose their Hagedorn entropy, allowing the Hagedorn entropy of fundamental strings to dominate the asymptotic density of states for $k<1$ instead of BTZ black holes. We then discuss the application of these models as approximations to and probes of black hole dynamics and thermodynamics, as well as associated information puzzles. In particular, because the correspondence transition reveals the interior of an evaporating black hole, it serves as a sensitive probe of any proposal regarding the composition of that interior.

The $AdS_3$ backgrounds in question have $R_{AdS}<\ell_s$, and so lie on the string side of the string/black hole correspondence transition. As a consequence, the high energy density of states consists of a string gas in $AdS_3$ rather than an ensemble of BTZ black holes. This property allows us to derive the dual $CFT_2$ by a systematic analysis of the worldsheet string theory on $AdS_3$.

We consider the fate of a massless (or ultra-relativistic massive) string probe propagating down the BTZ-like throat of a microstate geometry in the D1-D5 system. Far down the throat, the probe encounters large tidal forces that stretch and excite the string. The excitations are limited by the very short transit time through the region of large tidal force, leading to a controlled approximation to tidal stretching. We show that the amount of stretching is proportional to the incident energy, and that it robs the probe of the kinetic energy it would need to travel back up the throat. As a consequence, the probe is effectively trapped far down the throat and, through repeated return passes, scrambles into the ensemble of nearby microstates. We propose that this tidal trap** may lead to weak gravitational echoes.

We explore the stringy structure of 1/2-BPS bound states of NS fivebranes carrying momentum or fundamental string charge, in the decoupling limits leading to little string theory and to AdS3/CFT2 duality. We develop an exact worldsheet description of these states using null-gauged sigma models, and illustrate the construction by deriving the closed-form solution sourced by an elliptical NS5-F1 supertube. The Calabi-Yau/Landau-Ginsburg correspondence maps this geometrical worldsheet description to a non-compact LG model whose superpotential is determined by the fivebrane source configuration. Singular limits of the 1/2-BPS configuration space result when the fivebrane worldvolume self-intersects, as can be seen from both sides of the CY/LG duality - on the Landau-Ginsburg side from the degeneration of the superpotential(s), and on the geometrical side from an analysis of D-brane probes. These singular limits are a portal to black hole formation via the condensation of the branes that are becoming massless, and thus exhibit in the gravitational bulk description the central actors in the non-gravitational dual theory underlying black hole thermodynamics.

Geodesic probes in certain horizonless microstate geometries experience extreme tidal forces long before reaching the region where these geometries differ significantly from the extremal BTZ black hole. The purpose of this paper is to show that this behavior is a universal feature of all geometries that have a long BTZ throat that terminates in a cap, regardless of the details of this cap. Hence, incoming probes will scramble into the microstate structure before they encounter the region where the charges of the solution are sourced, and the reason for this premature scrambling is the amplification of tiny geometrical deviations by the relativistic speeds of the probes. To illustrate the phenomenon, we construct a new family of smooth horizonless superstratum microstate geometries, dual to D1-D5 CFT states whose momentum charge is carried by excitations on CFT strands of length $k$. We also show that, in the large-$k$ limit, these new superstrata resemble a blackened supertube solution everywhere except in the near-supertube region. Thus they resolve the singularity caused by the naive back-reaction of modes with non-linear instabilities near evanescent ergosurfaces.

The low-lying spectrum matches that of supergravity modes in the effective geometry and exhibits an underlying group-theoretic structure. Winding sectors describe strings carrying the same charges as the background; processes whereby strings turn into flux or vice-versa are mediated by large gauge transformations on the worldsheet. A wide variety of holographic RG flows from the fivebrane theory in the UV to (orbifolds of) AdS3 in the IR is amenable to exact treatment in worldsheet string theory as a class of null-gauged WZW models. The condensate of stringy winding operators which resolves the near-source structure of fivebranes on the Coulomb branch plays a crucial role in AdS3, revealing stringy structure invisible to the supergravity approximation. The D-brane sector contains precursors of the long strings which dominate black hole entropy in the dual spacetime CFT.

Taking the threefold to be T$^6$ or K3xT$^2$, we construct a map between a sub-sector of this CFT and a sub-sector of the D1-D5 CFT. We demonstrate this map by considering a set of D1-D5 CFT states that have smooth horizonless bulk duals, and explicitly constructing the supergravity solutions dual to the corresponding states of the MSW CFT. We thus obtain the largest known class of solutions dual to MSW CFT microstates, and demonstrate that five-dimensional ungauged supergravity admits much larger families of smooth horizonless solutions than previously known.

We demonstrate that Chromo-Natural Inflation can be made consistent with observational data if the SU(2) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken. Working in the Stueckelberg limit, we show that isocurvature is negligible, and the resulting adiabatic fluctuations can match current observational constraints. Observable levels of chirally-polarized gravitational radiation ($r\sim 10^{-3}$) can be produced while the evolution of all background fields is sub-Planckian. The gravitational wave spectrum is amplified via linear mixing with the gauge field fluctuations, and its amplitude is not simply set by the Hubble rate during inflation. This allows observable gravitational waves to be produced for an inflationary energy scale below the GUT scale. The tilt of the resulting gravitational wave spectrum can be either blue or red.

We construct the first family of horizonless supergravity solutions that have the same mass, charges and angular momenta as general supersymmetric rotating D1-D5-P black holes in five dimensions. This family includes solutions with arbitrarily small angular momenta, deep within the regime of quantum numbers and couplings for which a large classical black hole exists. These geometries are well-approximated by the black-hole solution, and in particular exhibit the same near-horizon throat. Deep in this throat, the black-hole singularity is resolved into a smooth cap. We also identify the holographically-dual states in the N=(4,4) D1-D5 orbifold CFT. Our solutions are among the states counted by the CFT elliptic genus, and provide examples of smooth microstate geometries within the ensemble of supersymmetric black-hole microstates.

Superstrata are bound states in string theory that carry D1, D5, and momentum charges, and whose supergravity descriptions are parameterized by arbitrary functions of (at least) two variables. In the D1-D5 CFT, typical three-charge states reside in high-degree twisted sectors, and their momentum charge is carried by modes that individually have fractional momentum. Understanding this momentum fractionation holographically is crucial for understanding typical black-hole microstates in this system. We use solution-generating techniques to add momentum to a multi-wound supertube and thereby construct the first examples of asymptotically-flat superstrata. The resulting supergravity solutions are horizonless and smooth up to well-understood orbifold singularities. Upon taking the AdS3 decoupling limit, our solutions are dual to CFT states with momentum fractionation. We give a precise proposal for these dual CFT states. Our construction establishes the very nontrivial fact that large classes of CFT states with momentum fractionation can be realized in the bulk as smooth horizonless supergravity solutions.

We continue an examination of the microstate geometries program begun in arXiv:1409.6017, focussing on the role of branes that wrap the cycles which degenerate when a throat in the geometry deepens and a horizon forms. An associated quiver quantum mechanical model of minimally wrapped branes exhibits a non-negligible fraction of the gravitational entropy, which scales correctly as a function of the charges. The results suggest a picture of AdS_3/CFT_2 duality wherein the long string that accounts for BTZ black hole entropy in the CFT description, can also be seen to inhabit the horizon of BPS black holes on the gravity side.

A key role in black hole dynamics is played by the inner horizon; most of the entropy of a slightly nonextremal charged or rotating black hole is carried there, and the covariant entropy bound suggests that the rest lies in the region between the inner and outer horizon. An attempt to match this onto results of the microstate geometries program suggests that a `Higgs branch' of underlying long string states of the configuration space realizes the degrees of freedom on the inner horizon, while the `Coulomb branch' describes the inter-horizon region and beyond. Support for this proposal comes from an analysis of the way singularities develop in microstate geometries, and their close analogy to corresponding structures in fivebrane dynamics. These singularities signal the opening up of the long string degrees of freedom of the theory, which are partly visible from the geometry side. A conjectural picture of the black hole interior is proposed, wherein the long string degrees of freedom resolve the geometrical singularity on the inner horizon, yet are sufficiently nonlocal to communicate information to the outer horizon and beyond.

Cosmological models in 1+1 dimensions are an ideal setting for investigating the quantum structure of inflationary dynamics -- gravity is renormalizable, while there is room for spatial structure not present in the minisuperspace approximation. We use this fortuitous convergence to investigate the mechanism of slow-roll eternal inflation. A variant of 1+1 Liouville gravity coupled to matter is shown to model precisely the scalar sector of cosmological perturbations in 3+1 dimensions. A particular example of quintessence in 1+1d is argued on the one hand to exhibit slow-roll eternal inflation according to standard criteria; on the other hand, a field redefinition relates the model to pure de Sitter gravity coupled to a free scalar matter field with no potential. This and other examples show that the standard logic leading to slow-roll eternal inflation is not invariant under field redefinitions, thus raising concerns regarding its validity. Aspects of the quantization of Liouville gravity as a model of quantum de Sitter space are also discussed.

Fluctuations in the intensity and polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the large-scale distribution of matter in the universe each contain clues about the nature of the earliest moments of time. The next generation of CMB and large-scale structure (LSS) experiments are poised to test the leading paradigm for these earliest moments---the theory of cosmic inflation---and to detect the imprints of the inflationary epoch, thereby dramatically increasing our understanding of fundamental physics and the early universe.
A future CMB experiment with sufficient angular resolution and frequency coverage that surveys at least 1% of the sky to a depth of 1 uK-arcmin can deliver a constraint on the tensor-to-scalar ratio that will either result in a 5-sigma measurement of the energy scale of inflation or rule out all large-field inflation models, even in the presence of foregrounds and the gravitational lensing B-mode signal. LSS experiments, particularly spectroscopic surveys such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, will complement the CMB effort by improving current constraints on running of the spectral index by up to a factor of four, improving constraints on curvature by a factor of ten, and providing non-Gaussianity constraints that are competitive with the current CMB bounds.

Chromo-Natural Inflation is the first worked example of a model of inflation in which slow-roll inflation is achieved by "magnetic drift" as opposed to Hubble friction. In this work, we give an account of the perturbations at linear order in this model. Our analysis uncovers two novel phenomena. First, the amplitude of scalar curvature perturbations is not directly tied to the shape of the inflationary potential. This allows the theory to violate naïve formulations of the Lyth bound. Second, the tensor sector of the theory is significantly altered from the usual case: the non-Abelian gauge field perturbations have a tensor degree of freedom. One chirality of the this tensor can be exponentially enhanced by a temporary instability near horizon crossing; this chiral instability exists because of the classical gauge field background, which violates parity. These tensor fluctuations of the gauge field also couple to gravitational waves at linear order in perturbation theory and source a chiral spectrum of gravitational waves. This spectrum can be exponentially enhanced over the usual inflationary spectrum due to the instability in the gauge sector. These new features cause the theory in its present form to be in significant tension with current observational data. This is because the new scalar physics leads to a significant reddening of the spectral tilt in the same region of parameter space where the exponential enhancement of the gravitational wave amplitude is small enough to satisfy current constraints on the tensor-to-scalar index. Hence, the model either predicts a spectral tilt that is too red, or it overproduces gravitational waves, or both.

Models of inflation involving non-Abelian gauge field backgrounds can produce gravitational waves at an observable level with a preferred handedness. This asymmetry comes about because the non-Abelian background generates parity-violation in the action for perturbations. In the specific model we study, Chromo-Natural Inflation, these gravitational waves can be produced at observable levels even when no field makes a super-Planckian field excursion, thus evading a common formulation of the Lyth bound. Unfortunately, when considered in concert with the scalar fluctuations, this chiral enhancement of the gravitational waves makes the model observationally inviable.

In the minisuperspace approximation, their effect on the dynamics can be mapped onto the problem of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field together with an external potential; slow roll arises when the motion is dominated by the analogue of `magnetic drift'. This mechanism is robust against radiative corrections. We suggest a possible experimental signature which, if observed, might be considered strong evidence for string theory.

The possibility of the extension of spatial diffeomorphisms to a larger family of symmetries in a class of classical field theories is studied. The generator of the additional local symmetry contains a quadratic kinetic term and a potential term which can be a general (not necessarily local) functional of the metric. From the perspective of the foundation of Einstein's gravity our results are positive: The extended constraint algebra is either that of Einstein's gravity, or ultralocal gravity. If our goal is a simple modification of Einstein's gravity that for example makes it perturbatively renormalizable, as has recently been suggested, then our results show that there is no such theory within this class.

The bulk partition function of pure Chern-Simons theory on a three-manifold is a state in the space of conformal blocks of the dual boundary RCFT, and therefore transforms non-trivially under the boundary modular group. In contrast the bulk partition function of AdS(3) string theory is the modular-invariant partition function of the dual CFT on the boundary. This is a puzzle because AdS(3) string theory formally reduces to pure Chern-Simons theory at long distances. We study this puzzle in the context of massive Chern-Simons theory. We show that the puzzle is resolved in this context by the appearance of a chiral "spectator boson" in the boundary CFT which restores modular invariance. It couples to the conformal metric but not to the gauge field on the boundary. Consequently, we find a generalization of the standard Chern-Simons/RCFT correspondence involving "nonholomorphic conformal blocks" and nonrational boundary CFTs. These generalizations appear in the long-distance limit of AdS(3) string theory, where the role of the spectator boson is played by other degrees of freedom in the theory.

After reviewing and extending the traditional descriptions of this class of theories, we provide a matrix model description. The 0B theory is similar to the realization of two dimensional bosonic string theory via matrix quantum mechanics in an inverted harmonic oscillator potential; the difference is that we expand around a non-perturbatively stable vacuum, where the matrix eigenvalues are equally distributed on both sides of the potential. Recent results on the annulus partition function in Liouville field theory are applied to non-critical string theory, both below and above the critical dimension. Liouville gravity coupled to $c\le 1$ matter has a dual formulation as a matrix model. Two well-known matrix model results are reproduced precisely using the worldsheet formulation: (1) the correlation function of two macroscopic loops, and (2) the leading non-perturbative effects. The latter identifies the eigenvalue instanton amplitudes of the matrix approach with disk instantons of the worldsheet approach, thus demonstrating that the matrix model is the effective dynamics of a D-brane realization of $d\le 1$ non-critical string theory. In the context of string theory above the critical dimension, i.e. $d\ge 25$, Liouville field theory realizes two-dimensional de Sitter gravity on the worldsheet. In this case, appropriate D-brane boundary conditions on the annulus realize the S-matrix for two-dimensional de Sitter gravity.
