The polarization of photons emitted by astrophysical sources might be altered as they travel through a dark matter medium composed of ultra light axion-like particles (ALPs). In particular, the coherent oscillations of the ALP background in the galactic halo induce a periodic change on the polarization of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by local sources such as pulsars. Building up on previous works, we develop a new, more robust, analysis based on the generalised Lomb-Scargle periodogram to search for this periodic signal in the emission of the Crab supernova remnant observed by the QUIJOTE MFI instrument and 20 galactic pulsars from the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) project. We also carefully take into account the stochastic nature of the axion field, an effect often overlooked in previous works. This refined analysis leads to the strongest limits on the axion-photon coupling for a wide range of dark matter masses spanning $10^{-23}\text{ eV}\lesssim m_a\lesssim10^{-19} \text{ eV}$. Finally, we survey possible optimal targets and the potential sensitivity to axionic dark-matter in this mass range that could be achieved using pulsar polarimetry in the future.

Abstract:
Fits of the p^4 covariant SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory to lattice QCD nucleon mass data from several collaborations for 2 and 2+1 flavors are presented. We consider contributions from explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom, finite volume and finite spacing corrections. We emphasize here our Nf=2+1 study. We consider contributions from explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom, finite volume and finite spacing corrections. We emphasize here our Nf=2+1 study. We obtain low-energy constants of natural size that are compatible with the rather linear pion-mass dependence of the nucleon mass observed in lattice QCD. We report a value for the pion-nucleon sigma term of 41(5)(4) MeV for the 2 flavor case and 52(3)(8) MeV for 2+1 flavors.

An expansion of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and Delta(1232) in small momentum transfer and pion mass is performed in a manifestly-covariant EFT framework consistent with chiral symmetry and analyticity. We present the expressions for the nucleon and Delta(1232) electromagnetic form factors, charge radii, and electromagnetic moments in the framework of SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory, with nucleon and Delta(1232)-isobar degrees of freedom, to next-to-leading order. Motivated by the results for the proton electric radius obtained from the muonic-hydrogen atom and electron-scattering process, we extract values for the second derivative of the electric form factor which is a genuine prediction of the p^3 BChPT. The chiral behavior of radii and moments is studied and compared to that obtained in the heavy-baryon framework and lattice QCD. The chiral behavior of Delta(1232)-isobar properties exhibits cusps and singularities at the threshold of Delta->pi N decay, and their physical significance is discussed.

We study finite-volume effects on the masses of the ground-state octet baryons using covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) up to next-to-leading order by analyzing the latest $n_f=2+1$ lattice Quantum ChromoDynamics (LQCD) results from the NPLQCD collaboration. Contributions of virtual decuplet baryons are taken into account using the "consistent" coupling scheme. We compare our results with those obtained from heavy baryon ChPT and show that, although both approaches can describe well the lattice data, the underlying physics is different: In HBChPT, virtual decuplet baryons play a more important role than they do in covariant ChPT. This is because the virtual octet baryon contributions to finite-volume corrections are larger in covariant ChPT than in HBChPT, while the contributions of intermediate decuplet baryons are smaller, because of relativistic effects. We observe that for the octet baryon masses, at fixed $m_πL$ ($\gg1$) finite-volume corrections decrease as $m_π$ approaches its physical value, provided that the strange quark mass is at or close to its physical value, as in most LQCD setups.

We discuss the chiral behavior of nucleon and Delta(1232) electromagnetic properties within the framework of a SU(2) covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. Our one-loop calculation is complete to the order p^3 and p^4/Delta with Delta as the Delta(1232)-nucleon energy gap. We show that the magnetic moment of a resonance can be defined through the linear energy shift only when an additional relation between the involved masses and the applied magnetic field strength is fulfilled. Singularities and cusps in the pion mass dependence of the Delta(1232) electromagnetic moments reflect a non-fulfillment. We show results for the pion mass dependence of the nucleon iso-vector electromagnetic quantities and present results for finite volume effects on the iso-vector anomalous magnetic moment.

We address electromagnetic properties of quasi-stable baryons in the context of chiral extrapolations of lattice QCD results. For particles near their decay threshold we show that the application of a small external magnetic field changes the particle's energy in a non-analytic way. Conventional electromagnetic moments are only well-defined when the background field B satisfies |eB|/(2M_*|M_*-M-m|) where M_* is the mass of the resonance and M, m the masses of the decay products. An application of this situation is the chiral extrapolation of Delta(1232)-isobar electromagnetic properties. We discuss such an extrapolation of the Delta(1232)-isobar magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole and magnetic octupole moments by a covariant chiral effective field theory.

Abstract:
We calculate the scattering lengths of Nambu-Goldstone bosons interacting with $D$ mesons in a covariant formulation of chiral perturbation theory, which satisfies heavy-quark spin symmetry and analytical properties of loop amplitudes. We compare our results with previous studies performed using heavy meson chiral perturbation theory and show that recoil corrections are sizable in most cases.

We present an analysis of the baryon-octet and -decuplet masses using covariant SU(3)-flavor chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order. Besides the description of the physical masses we address the problem of the lattice QCD extrapolation. Using the PACS-CS collaboration data we show that a good description of the lattice points can be achieved at next-to-leading order with the covariant loop amplitudes and phenomenologically determined values for the meson-baryon couplings. Moreover, the extrapolation to the physical point up to this order is found to be better than the linear one given at leading-order by the Gell-Mann-Okubo approach. The importance that a reliable combination of lattice QCD and chiral perturbation theory may have for hadron phenomenology is emphasized with the prediction of the pion-baryon and strange-baryon sigma terms.
