An L0 dwarf companion in the brown dwarf desert, at 30 AU

Dynamical Masses of the Binary Brown Dwarf GJ 569Bab

Abstract: We have obtained new images and high-resolution (R ~ 22400) near-infrared (1.2400-1.2575 micron) spectra of each component of the brown dwarf binary GJ 569Bab using the Adaptive Optics facility of the Keck II telescope and the NIRSPEC spectrometer. These data have allowed us to improve the determination of the astrometric orbit and to measure radial velocities of the components. We have used the… ▽ More We have obtained new images and high-resolution (R ~ 22400) near-infrared (1.2400-1.2575 micron) spectra of each component of the brown dwarf binary GJ 569Bab using the Adaptive Optics facility of the Keck II telescope and the NIRSPEC spectrometer. These data have allowed us to improve the determination of the astrometric orbit and to measure radial velocities of the components. We have used the astrometric and spectroscopic measurements to derive the dynamical mass of each brown dwarf and the systemic velocity of the pair by means of a chi^2 fitting technique. From various considerations, the mass of each component is likely in the range 0.034-0.070 Msol (GJ 569Bb) and 0.055-0.087 Msol (GJ 569Ba). This implies that the mass ratio, q, of the binary is greater than 0.4, being the most likely value q = 0.75-0.85. Adopting 0.072 Msol as the most conservative location of the substellar limit for solar metallicity, our analysis confirms GJ 569Bb as the first genuine brown dwarf known without any theoretical assumption. We have compared the dynamical masses of GJ 569Ba and Bb, and their effective temperatures and luminosities, to the predictions of state-of-the-art theoretical evolutionary isochrones, finding that models exhibit good performance in the regime of high substellar masses if the binary is about a few hundred million years old. However, the surface gravities of GJ 569Ba (M8.5V) and Bb (M9V) derived from our spectral analysis (the observed data have been compared to the latest synthetic spectra) appear to be smaller than the values provided by the evolutionary models. △ Less

First determination of the dynamical mass of a binary L dwarf

Abstract: We present here the results of astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic observations leading to the determination of the orbit and dynamical masses of the binary L dwarf 2MASSW J0746425+2000321. High angular resolution observations spread over almost 4 years and obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), and a the W. M. Keck Observatory (Keck) allow us… ▽ More We present here the results of astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic observations leading to the determination of the orbit and dynamical masses of the binary L dwarf 2MASSW J0746425+2000321. High angular resolution observations spread over almost 4 years and obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), and a the W. M. Keck Observatory (Keck) allow us to cover 36% of the period, corresponding to 60% of the orbit, and, for the first time, to derive a precise estimate of the total and individual masses of such a late-type object. We find an orbital period of 3850.9$^{+904}_{-767}$ days. The corresponding total mass is 0.146$^{+0.016}_{-0.006}$ M$_{\sun}$, with uncertainties depending on the distance. Spatially resolved low resolution optical (550--1025 nm) spectra have been obtained with HST/STIS, allowing us to measure the spectral types of the two components (L0$\pm$0.5 for the primary and L1.5$\pm$0.5 for the secondary). We also present precise photometry of the individual components measured on the high angular resolution images obtained with HST/ACS and WFPC2 (visible), VLT/NACO (J, H and Ks bands) and Keck I (Ks) band). These spectral and photometric measurements enable us to estimate their effective temperatures and mass ratio, and to place the object accurately in a H--R diagram. The binary system is most likely formed by a primary with a mass of 0.085$\pm$0.010 M$_{\sun}$ and a secondary with a mass of 0.066$\pm$0.006 M$_{\sun}$, thus clearly substellar, for an age of approximately 300$\pm$150 Myr. A young binary Brown Dwarf in the R-CrA star formation region

A CCD Imaging Search for Wide Metal-Poor Binaries

Abstract: We explored the regions within a radius of 25 arcsec around 473 nearby, low-metallicity G- to M-type stars using (VR)I optical filters and small-aperture telescopes. About 10% of the sample was searched up to angular separations of 90 arcsec. We applied photometric and astrometric techniques to detect true physical companions to the targets. The great majority of the sample stars was drawn from… ▽ More We explored the regions within a radius of 25 arcsec around 473 nearby, low-metallicity G- to M-type stars using (VR)I optical filters and small-aperture telescopes. About 10% of the sample was searched up to angular separations of 90 arcsec. We applied photometric and astrometric techniques to detect true physical companions to the targets. The great majority of the sample stars was drawn from the Carney-Latham surveys; their metallicities range from roughly solar to [Fe/H]=-3.5 dex. Our I-band photometric survey detected objects that are between 0 and 5 mag fainter (completeness) than the target stars; the maximum dynamical range of our exploration is 9 mag. We also investigated the literature and inspected images from the Digitized Sky Surveys to complete our search. By combining photometric and proper motion measurements, we retrieved 29 previously known companions, and identified 13 new proper motion companions. Near-infrared 2MASS photometry is provided for the great majority of them. Low-resolution optical spectroscopy (386-1000 nm) was obtained for eight of the new companion stars. These spectroscopic data confirm them as cool, late-type, metal-depleted dwarfs, with spectral classes from esdK7 to sdM3. After comparison with low-metallicity evolutionary models, we estimate the masses of the proper motion companion stars to be in the range 0.5-0.1 Msol. They are orbiting their primary stars at projected separations between ~32 and ~57000 AU. These orbital sizes are very similar to those of solar-metallicity stars of the same spectral types. Our results indicate that about 15% of the metal-poor stars have stellar companions at large orbits, which is in agreement with the binary fraction observed among main sequence G- to M-type stars and T Tauri stars. △ Less

Discovery of very nearby ultracool dwarfs from DENIS

A further object, selected from the 2MASS Second Incremental Release, was observed at a later epoch with the same instrument. Six objects are already known in the literature; we re-derive their properties. A further four prove to be very nearby (~10 pc) mid-to-late L-dwarfs, three unknown hitherto, two of which are almost certainly substellar. These findings increase the number of L-dwarfs known within ~10 pc by ~25%. The remainder of the objects discussed here are early L or very late M-type dwarfs lying between ~45 and 15 pc and are also new to the literature. Spectral types have been derived by direct comparison with J-,H- and K- band spectra of known template ultracool dwarfs given by Leggett et al. (ftp://ftp.jach.hawaii.edu/pub/ukirt/skl/dL.spectra/) For the known objects, we generally find agreement to within ~1 subclass with previously derived spectral types. Distances are determined from the most recent M_J vs. spectral type calibrations, and together with our derived proper motions yield kinematics for most targets consistent with that expected for the disk population; for three probable late M-dwarfs, membership of a dynamically older population is postulated. The very nearby L-type objects discussed here are of great interest for future studies of binarity and parallaxes. △ Less

23 High Redshift Supernovae from the IfA Deep Survey: Doubling the SN Sample at z>0.7

These supernovae were discovered during the IfA Deep Survey, which began in September 2001 and observed a total of 2.5 square degrees to a depth of approximately m=25-26 in RIZ over 9-17 visits, typically every 1-3 weeks for nea… ▽ More We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of 23 high redshift supernovae spanning a range of z=0.34-1.03, 9 of which are unambiguously classified as Type Ia. These supernovae were discovered during the IfA Deep Survey, which began in September 2001 and observed a total of 2.5 square degrees to a depth of approximately m=25-26 in RIZ over 9-17 visits, typically every 1-3 weeks for nearly 5 months, with additional observations continuing until April 2002. We give a brief description of the survey motivations, observational strategy, and reduction process. This sample of 23 high-redshift supernovae includes 15 at z>0.7, doubling the published number of objects at these redshifts, and indicates that the evidence for acceleration of the universe is not due to a systematic effect proportional to redshift. In combination with the recent compilation of Tonry et al. (2003), we calculate cosmological parameter density contours which are consistent with the flat universe indicated by the CMB (Spergel et al. 2003). Adopting the constraint that Omega_total = 1.0, we obtain best-fit values of (Omega_m, Omega_Lambda)=(0.33, 0.67) using 22 SNe from this survey augmented by the literature compilation. We show that using the empty-beam model for gravitational lensing does not eliminate the need for Omega_Lambda > 0. Experience from this survey indicates great potential for similar large-scale surveys while also revealing the limitations of performing surveys for z>1 SNe from the ground. △ Less

Spectroscopic identification of DENIS-selected brown dwarf candidates in the Upper Scorpius OB association

We assess the youth of the objects by comparing them to their older counterparts of similar spectral type in the Pleiades cluster and the field. Our analysis indicates that 28 of our targets are young very low-mass objects, and thus they are strong candidate members of the OB association. The other 12 DENIS sources are foreground M dwarfs or background red giants. Our sample of spectroscopic candidate members includes 18 objects with spectral types in the range M6.5 and M9, which are likely young brown dwarfs. We classify these candidates as accreting/non accreting using the scheme proposed by Barrado y Navascués & Mart\'ın (2003). We find 5 substellar-mass candidate cluster members that are still undergoing mass accretion, indicating that the timescale for accretion onto brown dwarfs can be as long as 5 Myr in some cases. △ Less

An empirical criterion to classify T Tauri stars and substellar analogs using low-resolution optical spectroscopy

Our goal was to seek the definition of a simple empirical criterion to classify stars or brown dwarfs which… ▽ More We have compiled and studied photometric and spectroscopic data published in the literature of several star forming regions and young open clusters (Orion, Taurus, IC348, Sco-Cen Complex, Chamaeleon I, TW Hya association, sigma Orionis cluster, IC2391, alpha Per cluster and the Pleiades). Our goal was to seek the definition of a simple empirical criterion to classify stars or brown dwarfs which are accreting matter from a disk on the sole basis of low-resolution optical spectroscopic data. We show that using Halpha equivalent widths and spectral types we can statistically classify very young stars and brown dwarfs as classical T Tauri stars and substellar analogs. As a boundary between accreting and non accreting objects, we use the saturation limit of chromospheric activity at Log L(Halpha)/L(bol)=-3.3 (determined in the open clusters). We discuss the uncertainties in the classification scheme due to the occurrence of flares. We have used this spectroscopic empirical criterion to classify objects found in the literature, and we compute the fraction of accreting objects in several star forming regions. The fraction of accreting objects appears to decrease from about 50% to about 5% from 1 Myr to 10 Myr for both stars and brown dwarfs. △ Less

Spectroscopic estimate of surface gravity for a planetary member in the Sigma Ori cluster

Abstract: We present intermediate-resolution (R=1500) near-infrared spectroscopy from 1.17 $μ$m to 1.37 $μ$m of the spectral type T planetary candidate member in the \sigori cluster S Ori 70 reported by Zapatero Osorio et al. (2002). The new data have been obtained with NIRSPEC at the Keck II telescope. The low gravity of this object derived from spectral synthesis supports its youth and membership to the young \sigori cluster. Using evolutionary models for an age of 3 Myr, we obtain a mass of 3 \mjup and a radius of 0.16 $R_{\odot}$, independent of the distance to the object. Our analysis confirms that S Ori 70 is the lowest mass cluster planet so far identified in the galaxy. △ Less

Multiplicity of Nearby Free-floating Ultra-cool Dwarfs: a HST-WFPC2 search for companions

Abstract: We present HST/WFPC2 observations of a sample of 134 ultra-cool objects (spectral types later than M7) coming from the DENIS, 2MASS and SDSS surveys, with distances estimated to range from 7 pc to 105 pc. Fifteen new ultra-cool binary candidates are reported here. Eleven known binaries are confirmed and orbital motion is detected in some of them. We estimate that the closest binary systems in th… ▽ More We present HST/WFPC2 observations of a sample of 134 ultra-cool objects (spectral types later than M7) coming from the DENIS, 2MASS and SDSS surveys, with distances estimated to range from 7 pc to 105 pc. Fifteen new ultra-cool binary candidates are reported here. Eleven known binaries are confirmed and orbital motion is detected in some of them. We estimate that the closest binary systems in this sample have periods between 5 and 20 years, and thus dynamical masses will be derived in the near future. For the calculation of binary frequency we restrict ourselves to systems with distances less than 20 pc. After correction of the binaries bias, we find a ratio of visual binaries (at the HST limit of detection) of around 10%, and that ~15% of the 26 objects within 20 parsecs are binary systems with separations between 1 and 8 A.U. The observed frequency of ultra-cool binaries is similar than that of binaries with G-type primaries in the separation range from 2.1 A.U. to 140 A.U. There is also a clear deficit of ultra-cool binaries with separations greater than 15 A.U., and a possible tendency for the binaries to have mass ratios near unity. Most systems have indeed visual and near-infrared brightness ratios between 1 and 0.3. We discuss our results in the framework of current scenarios for the formation and evolution of free-floating brown dwarfs. △ Less

An HST/WFPC2 Survey for Brown Dwarf Binaries in the alpha Per and the Pleiades Open Clusters

Abstract: We present the results of a high-resolution imaging survey for brown dwarf (BD) binaries in two open clusters. The observations were carried out with WFPC2 onboard HST. Our sample consists of 8 BD candidates in the alpha Per cluster and 25 BD candidates in the Pleiades. We have resolved 4 binaries in the Pleiades with separations in the range 0".094--0".058, corresponding to projected separation… ▽ More We present the results of a high-resolution imaging survey for brown dwarf (BD) binaries in two open clusters. The observations were carried out with WFPC2 onboard HST. Our sample consists of 8 BD candidates in the alpha Per cluster and 25 BD candidates in the Pleiades. We have resolved 4 binaries in the Pleiades with separations in the range 0".094--0".058, corresponding to projected separations between 11.7~AU and 7.2~AU. No binaries were found among the alpha Per targets. Three of the binaries have proper motions consistent with cluster membership in the Pleiades cluster, and for one of them we report the detection of Halpha in emission and LiI absorption obtained from Keck~II/ESI spectroscopy. One of the binaries does not have a proper motion consistent with Pleiades membership. We estimate that BD binaries wider than 12~AU are less frequent than 9% in the alphaPer and Pleiades clusters. This is consistent with an extension to substellar masses of a trend observed among stellar binaries: the maximum semimajor axis of binary systems decreases with decreasing primary mass. We find a binary frequency of 2 binaries over 13 BDs with confirmed proper motion membership in the Pleiades, corresponding to a binary fraction of 15%(1 sigma error bar +15%/-5%). These binaries are limited to the separation range 7-12~AU and their mass ratios are larger than 0.7. The relatively high binary frequency (>10%), the bias to separations smaller than about 15 AU and the trend to high mass ratios (q>0.7) are fundamental properties of BDs. Current theories of BD formation do not appear to provide a good description of all these properties. △ Less

A New Multiple Stellar System in the Solar Neighborhood

The estimated masses for the two new companions depend strongly on the age of the system. For the range of ages found in the literature for IC 2391 supercluster members (from 35 Myr to 200 Myr), the expected masses range from 0.2 M$_\odot$ to 0.4 M$_\odot$ for the B component, and from 0.09 M$_\odot$ to 0.22 M$_\odot$ for the C component. The determination of the dynamical mass of the faintest component of GJ 900 will yield the age of the system using theoretical evolutionary tracks. The apparent separations of the GJ 900 system components meet the observational criterion for an unstable Trapezium-type system, but this could be a projection effect. XMM-Newton observations of the nearby brown dwarf LP 944-20

The target was detected with the Optical Monitor (V=16.736$\pm$0.081), but it was not detected during the $\approx 48$ ks observation with the X-ray telescopes. We determine a $3σ$ upper limit for the X-ray emission from this object of $L_{X}<3.1 \times 10^{23}$ $ergs \cdot s^{-1}$, equivale… ▽ More The nearby (d=5.0 pc) brown dwarf LP944-20 was observed with the XMM-Newton satellite on 07 January 2001. The target was detected with the Optical Monitor (V=16.736$\pm$0.081), but it was not detected during the $\approx 48$ ks observation with the X-ray telescopes. We determine a $3σ$ upper limit for the X-ray emission from this object of $L_{X}<3.1 \times 10^{23}$ $ergs \cdot s^{-1}$, equivalent to a luminosity ratio upper limit of $\log{(L_{X}/L_{bol})} \le -6.28$. This measurement improves by a factor of 3 the previous \emph{Chandra} limit on the quiescent X-ray flux. This is the most sensitive limit ever obtained on the quiescent X-ray emission of a brown dwarf. Combining the XMM data with previous \emph{ROSAT} and \emph{Chandra} data, we derive flare duty cycles as a function of their luminosities. We find that very strong flares [Log$(L_X/L_{bol})>-$2.5] are very rare (less than 0.7% of the time). Flares like the one detected by Chandra [Log$(L_X/L_{bol})=-$4.1] have a duty cycle of about 6%, which is lower than the radio flare duty cycle ($\sim$13%). When compared with other M dwarfs, LP944-20 appears to be rather inactive in X-rays despite of its relative youth, fast rotation and its moderately strong activity at radio wavelengths. △ Less

Discovery of a very cool object with extraordinarily strong H(alpha) emission

Lithium Abundances in Wide Binaries with Solar-Type Twin Components

Eleven other pairs have components with similar lithium abundances. We cannot determine if the remaining 13 pairs have lithium differences because we did not detect the \ion{Li}{1} lines, and hence we can only provide upper limits to the abundances of both stars. Our results demonstrate that twin stars do not always share the same lithium abundances. Lithium depletion in solar-type stars does not only depend on age, mass, and metallicity. This result is consistent with the spread in lithium abundances among solar-type stars in the solar-age open cluster M67. Our stars are brighter than the M67 members of similar spectral type, making them good targets for detailed follow-up studies that could shed light on the elusive mechanism responsible for the depletion of lithium during the main-sequence evolution of the Sun and solar-type stars. △ Less

A Methane Isolated Planetary Mass Object in Orion

Activity at the Deuterium-Burning Mass Limit in Orion

We also show that sigma Orionis M and L dwarfs have in general more Halpha emission than their older field spectral counterparts. This could be due to a decline in the strength of the magnetic field with age in brown dwarfs and isolated planetary-mass objects, or to a likely mass accretion from disks in the very young sigma Orionis substellar members. △ Less

Discovery of a Methane Dwarf from the IfA-Deep Survey

Comparison with nearby T dwarfs gives a spectral type of T3-T4 and a distance of ~45 pc. Simple estimates based on previous T dwarf discoveries suggest that the IfA survey will find a comparable number of T dwarfs as the 2MASS survey, albeit at a much larger average distance. Lithium and Halpha in stars and brown dwarfs of sigma Orionis

Our observations are intended to investigate the age of the cluster. The spectral types derived for our target sample are found to be in the range K6-M8.5, which corresponds… ▽ More We present intermediate- and low-resolution optical spectra around Halpha and LiI 6708 A for a sample of 25 low mass stars and 2 brown dwarfs with confirmed membership in the pre-main sequence stellar sigma Orionis cluster. Our observations are intended to investigate the age of the cluster. The spectral types derived for our target sample are found to be in the range K6-M8.5, which corresponds to a mass interval of roughly 1.2-0.02 Msun on the basis of state-of-the-art evolutionary models. Radial velocities (except for one object) are found to be consistent with membership in the Orion complex. All cluster members show considerable Halpha emission and LiI in absorption, which is typical of very young ages. We find that our pseudo-equivalent widths appear rather dispersed (and intense in the case of Halpha) for objects cooler than M3.5 spectral class, occurring at the approximate mass where low mass stars are expected to become fully convective. The least massive brown dwarf in our sample, SOri 45 (M8.5, ~0.02 Msun), displays variable Halpha emission and a radial velocity that differs from the cluster mean velocity. Tentative detection of forbidden lines in emission indicates that this brown dwarf may be accreting mass from a surrounding disk. We also present recent computations of LiI curves of growth for low gravities and for the temperature interval (about 4000-2600 K) of our sample. The comparison of our observations to these computations allows us to infer that no lithium depletion has yet taken place in sigma Orionis, and that the observed pseudo-equivalent widths are consistent with a cluster initial lithium abundance close to the cosmic value. Hence, the upper limit to the sigma Orionis cluster age can be set at 8 Myr, with a most likely value around 2-4 Myr. △ Less

Hokupa'a-Gemini Discovery of Two Ultracool Companions to the Young Star HD 130948

The position of the new companions on the H-R diagram in comparison with theoretical models is consistent with the young age of the primary star (<0.8 Gyr) estimated on the basis of X-ray activity, lithium abundance and fast rotation. HD 130948 B and C likely constitute a pair of young contracting brown dwarfs with an orbital period of about 10 years, and will yield dynamical masses for L dwarfs in the near future. △ Less

Four Brown Dwarfs in the Taurus Star-Forming Region

It also displays Br$γ$ emission in an infrared spectrum obtained with IRCS on the Subaru telescope, suggesting that it is accreting matter from a disk. The \ion{K}{1} resonance doublet and the \ion{Na}{1} subordinate doublet at 818.3 and 819.5 nm in these Taurus objects are weaker than in field dwarfs of similar spectral type, consistent with low surface gravities as expected for young brown dwarfs. Two of the objects are cooler and fainter than GG Tau Bb, the lowest mass known member of the Taurus association. We estimate masses of only 0.03 M$_\odot$ for them. The spatial distribution of brown dwarfs in Taurus hints to a possible anticorrelation between the density of stars and the density of brown dwarfs. △ Less

Keck NIRC Observations of Planetary-mass Candidate Members in the sigma Orionis Open Cluster

The new data have been obtained with NIRC at the Keck I telescope. All of our targets, except for one, are confirmed as likely cluster members. Hence, we also confirm that the planetary-mass d… ▽ More We present K-band photometry and low-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy from 1.44 to 2.45 micron of isolated planetary-mass candidate members in the sigma Orionis cluster found by Zapatero Osorio et al. The new data have been obtained with NIRC at the Keck I telescope. All of our targets, except for one, are confirmed as likely cluster members. Hence, we also confirm that the planetary-mass domain in the cluster is well populated. Using our deep K-band images we searched for companions to the targets in the separation range 0.3" to 10" up to a maximum faint limit of K=19.5 mag. One suspected companion seems to be an extremely red galaxy. The near-infrared colors of the sigma Orionis substellar members indicate that dust grains condense and settle in their atmospheres. We estimate that the surface temperatures range from 2500 K down to 1500 K. The spectroscopic sequence covers the full range of L subclasses, and the faintest object is tentatively classified as T0. These targets provide a sequence of substellar objects of known age, distance and metallicity, which can be used as benchmark for understanding the spectral properties of ultracool dwarfs. △ Less

New neighbours. III. 21 new companions to nearby dwarfs, discovered with adaptive optics

We identify 21 new components in solar neighbourhood systems, of which 13 were found while surveying a volume-limited sample of M dwarfs within 12pc. We are obtaining complete observations for this subsample, to derive unbiased multiplicity statistics for the very-low-mass disk population. Additionally, we… ▽ More We present some results of a CFHT adaptive optics search for companions to nearby dwarfs. Additionally, we resolve for the first time 6 known spectroscopic or astrometric binaries, for a total of 27 newly resolved companions. A fair fraction of the new binaries has favourable parameters for accurate mass determinations. The newly resolved companion of Gl120.1C had an apparent spectroscopic minimum mass in the brown-dwarf range (Duquennoy & Mayor 1991) and it contributed to the statistical evidence that a few percent of solar type stars might have close-in brown-dwarf companions. We find that Gl~120.1C actually is an unrecognised double-lined spectroscopic pair. Its radial-velocity amplitude had therefore been strongly underestimated by Duquennoy & Mayor, and it does not truly belong to their sample of single-lined systems with minimum spectroscopic mass below the substellar limit. We also present the first direct detection of Gl~494B, an astrometric brown-dwarf candidate. Its luminosity does straddle the substellar limit, and it is a brown dwarf if its age is less than 300Myr. A few more years of observations will ascertain its mass and status from first principles. △ Less

The orbit of the brown dwarf binary Gl 569B

Abstract: We present photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby (9.8 pc) low-mass binary Gl 569Bab (in turn being a companion to the early-M star Gl 569A), made with the Keck adaptive optics facility. Having observed Gl 569Bab since August 1999, we are able to see orbital motion and to determine the orbital parameters of the pair. We find the orbital period to be 892 +/- 25 days… ▽ More We present photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby (9.8 pc) low-mass binary Gl 569Bab (in turn being a companion to the early-M star Gl 569A), made with the Keck adaptive optics facility. Having observed Gl 569Bab since August 1999, we are able to see orbital motion and to determine the orbital parameters of the pair. We find the orbital period to be 892 +/- 25 days, the semi-major axis to be 0.90 +/- 0.02 AU, the eccentricity to be 0.32 +/- 0.02 and the inclination of the system to be 34+/- 3 degrees (1-sigma). The total mass is found to be 0.123 (-0.022/+0.027) Msun (3-sigma). In addition, we have obtained low resolution (R=1500-1700) near-infrared spectra of each of the components in the J- and K-bands. We determine the spectral types of the objects to be M8.5V (Gl 569Ba) and M9V (Gl 569Bb) with an uncertainty of half a subclass. We also present new J- and K-band photometry which allows us to accurately place the objects in the HR diagram. Most likely the binary system is comprised of two brown dwarfs with a mass ratio of 0.89 and with an age of approximately 300 Myr. △ Less

Photometric Variability in the Ultracool Dwarf BRI 0021-0214: Possible Evidence for Dust Clouds

A periodogram analysis finds a strong peak at a period of 0.84 day. This modulation appears to be transient because it is present in the 1995 data but not in the 1996 data. We also find a possible period of 0.20 day, which appears to be present in both the 1995 and 1996 datasets. However, we do not find any periodicity close to the rotation period expected from the spectroscopic rotational broadening (< 0.14 day). BRI 0021-0214 is a very inactive object, with extremely low levels of Halpha and X-ray emission. Thus, it is unlikely that magnetically induced cool spots can account for the photometric variability. The photometric variability of BRI 0021-0214 could be explained by the presence of an active meteorology that leads to inhomogeneous clouds on the surface. The lack of photometric modulation at the expected rotational period suggests that the pattern of surface features may be more complicated than previously anticipated. △ Less

The Substellar Mass Function in sigma Orionis

We identify 64 very low-mass cluster member candidates in this region. We have available three color (IZJ) photometry for all of them, spectra for 9 objects, and K photom… ▽ More We combine results from imaging searches for substellar objects in the sigma Orionis cluster and follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations to derive a census of the brown dwarf population in a region of 847 arcmin^2. We identify 64 very low-mass cluster member candidates in this region. We have available three color (IZJ) photometry for all of them, spectra for 9 objects, and K photometry for 27% of our sample. These data provide a well defined sequence in the I vs I-J, I-K color magnitude diagrams, and indicate that the cluster is affected by little reddening despite its young age (~5 Myr). Using state-of-the-art evolutionary models, we derive a mass function from the low-mass stars (0.2 Msol) across the complete brown dwarf domain (0.075 Msol to 0.013 Msol), and into the realm of free-floating planetary-mass objects (<0.013 Msol). We find that the mass spectrum (dN/dm ~ m^{-alpha}) increases toward lower masses with an exponent alpha = 0.8+/-0.4. Our results suggest that planetary-mass isolated objects could be as common as brown dwarfs; both kinds of objects together would be as numerous as stars in the cluster. If the distribution of stellar and substellar masses in sigma Orionis is representative of the Galactic disk, older and much lower luminosity free-floating planetary-mass objects with masses down to about 0.005 Msol should be abundant in the solar vicinity, with a density similar to M-type stars. △ Less

DENIS-P J104814.7-395606.1: An M9 dwarfs at about 4 pc

A HIRES echelle spectrum obtained with the 10-m Keck telescope shows that it is an M9 dwarf. DENIS 1048-39 has a very bright apparent magnitude (I=12.67) for its spectral type and colou… ▽ More We present the discovery of a previously unknown member of the immediate solar neighbourhood, DENIS-P J104814.7-395606.1 (hereafter DENIS 1048-39), identified while mining the DENIS database for new nearby stars. A HIRES echelle spectrum obtained with the 10-m Keck telescope shows that it is an M9 dwarf. DENIS 1048-39 has a very bright apparent magnitude (I=12.67) for its spectral type and colour (I-J=3.07), and is therefore very nearby. If it is single its distance is only 4.1 +- 0.6pc, ranking it as between our twelfth and fortyth closest neighbour. It is also the closest star or brown dwarf with a spectral type later than M7V. Its proper motion was determined through comparison of Sky atlas Schmidt plates, scanned by the MAMA microdensitometer, with the DENIS images. At 1.53"/yr it further attests the closeness of DENIS 1048-39, and hence its dwarf status. These characteristics make it an obvious target for further detailed studies. △ Less

From the Top to the Bottom of the Main Sequence: A Complete Mass Function of the Young Open Cluster M35

Abstract: We present very deep and accurate photometry of the open cluster M35 (VRIc filters). We have covered a region of 27.5x27.5 square arcmin. The data range from Ic=12.5 to 23.5 mag, and the color intervals are 0.4\le(V-I)c\le3.0, 0.5\le(R-I)c\le2.5. Roughly, these values span from 1.6 M_\odot down to the substellar limit. We have merged our sample with previously published data and obtained a color-magnitude diagram for the complete stellar population of the cluster, covering the spectral range early B - mid M. The Mass Function increases monotonically, when plotted in a log-log form, until it reaches ~0.8 M_\odot (α=2.59). It remains shallower for less massive stars (α=0.81 for 0.8-0.2 M_\odot), whereas a decrease ins observed for stars close to the substellar regime. Probing the Substellar Regime with SIRTF

For this sensitivity, we provide estimates of the number of low mass brown dwarfs and isolated planets detected per square degree for power-law mass functions with $α$=1.5, and 1.0. Shallower surveys covering a larger area are inefficient because of large overheads and detector noise. Deeper surveys covering a smaller area become more and more affected by crowding with galaxies. A survey like the one that we propose would determine the field mass function down to a few Jupiter masses through the identification of a large sample of brown dwarfs and isolated planets. The proposed SIRTF survey would also allow the first detection of ultracool substellar objects with temperatures between 700 K and 200 K. The cooling curves of substellar objects with masses less than 20 Jupiters imply that they should spend most of their lifetimes at temperatures below 700 K. Preliminary models indicate that their atmospheres could be dominated by water clouds, which would diminish their optical and near-infrared fluxes. Membership and Multiplicity among Very Low-Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in the Pleiades Cluster

The membership status of these objects is assessed. Eight objects out of 45 appear to be non-members. A search for companions among 34 very low-mass Pleiades members (M$\le$0.09 M$_\odot$) in high-spatial resolution images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and the adaptive optics system of the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope produced no resolved binaries with separations larger than 0.2 arcsec (a ~ 27 AU; P ~ 444 years). Nevertheless, we find evidence for a binary sequence in the color-magnitude diagrams, in agreement with the results of Steele & Jameson (1995) for higher mass stars. We compare the multiplicity statistics of the Pleiades very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs with that of G and K-type main sequence stars in the solar neighborhood (Duquennoy & Mayor 1991). We find that there is some evidence for a deficiency of wide binary systems (separation >27 AU) among the Pleiades very low-mass members. We briefly discuss how this result can fit with current scenarios of brown dwarf formation. We correct the Pleiades substellar mass function for the contamination of cluster non-members found in this work. We find a contamination level of 33% among the brown dwarf candidates identified by Bouvier et al. (1998). Assuming a power law IMF across the substellar boundary, we find a slope dN/dM ~ M^{-0.53}, implying that the number of objects per mass bin is still rising but the contribution to the total mass of the cluster is declining in the brown dwarf regime. △ Less

A search for Jovian-mass planets around CM Draconis using eclipse minima timing

Abstract: For the eclipsing binary system CM Draconis, eclipse minimum times have been monitored with high precision between 1994 and 1999. Periodic deviations of minimum times from a linear ephemeris may indicate the presence of an orbiting third body. Individual measurements of 41 eclipse minimum times result in a standard deviation from linear ephemeris of 5.74 seconds. A power spectral analysis of the… ▽ More For the eclipsing binary system CM Draconis, eclipse minimum times have been monitored with high precision between 1994 and 1999. Periodic deviations of minimum times from a linear ephemeris may indicate the presence of an orbiting third body. Individual measurements of 41 eclipse minimum times result in a standard deviation from linear ephemeris of 5.74 seconds. A power spectral analysis of the residuals reveals only one periodicity with more then 2 seconds amplitude. This feature, with a periodicity between 750 and 1050 days has an amplitude of 2.8+-0.5 seconds, and is also present with similar phases if the power spectral analysis is performed independently for primary and secondary eclipses. It would be compatible with a planet of 1.5-3 Jupiter masses at an orbital distance of 1.1-1.45 AU to the binary barycenter. The assignation of a planet to the CM Dra system can however only be upheld if this periodicity can be followed in future observations for several years. For low-mass eclipsing binary stars, the method of eclipse minimum timing allows one to reach mass limits for the detection of third bodies well below that feasible by radial velocity measurements. △ Less

A Survey for Low-mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in the Upper-Scorpius OB Association

Abstract: The Upper-Scorpius association is the OB association nearest to the Sun (145 pc). Its young age (5 Myr) makes it an ideal place to search for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, as these objects should be relatively bright. We have performed a photometric search for the low-mass members of the association, using the R, I, and Z filters. The completeness limit is I=18.5 and the saturation limit is I… ▽ More The Upper-Scorpius association is the OB association nearest to the Sun (145 pc). Its young age (5 Myr) makes it an ideal place to search for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, as these objects should be relatively bright. We have performed a photometric search for the low-mass members of the association, using the R, I, and Z filters. The completeness limit is I=18.5 and the saturation limit is I=13. We obtain 138 candidate members, covering nearly the entire M spectral type range. We find an excess of brown dwarf candidates over the number predicted by a Miller-Scalo Initial Mass Function. In addition, we have performed infrared imaging and low resolution optical spectroscopy of selected candidates. We find that the infrared observations confirm the spectral types obtained with the optical photometry. Furthermore, we find H_alpha in emission in 20 of the 22 objects observed spectroscopically. As H_alpha is an indicator of youth, we believe that these 20 objects may belong to the association. One of them, UScoCTIO 128 has a very strong and constant H_alpha line (equivalent width: -130 A), and its position in the color magnitude diagram suggests that it is a brown dwarf with mass equal to 0.02 msun. Confirmation of this and the other candidates will have to wait for higher resolution observations that can reveal spectroscopic mass indicators like Li I and gravity indicators, such as K I and the subordinate lines of Na I. △ Less

An Effective Temperature Scale for Late M and L Dwarfs, from Resonance Absorption Lines of CsI and RbI

Our goal is to assign effective temperatures to the objects using detailed atmospheric models and fine analysis of the alkali resonance absorption lines of CsI and RbI. These yield mutually consistent results (+-150 K) when we use ``cleared-dust'' models, which account for the removal of refractory species from the molecular state… ▽ More We present Keck HIRES spectra of 6 late-M dwarfs and 11 L dwarfs. We find a tendency for the RbI line to imply a slightly higher temperature, which we ascribe to an incomplete treatment of the overlying molecular opacities. The final effective temperatures we adopt are based on the CsI fits alone, though the RbI fits support the CsI temperature sequence. This work, in combination with results from the infrared, hints that dust in these atmospheres has settled out of the high atmosphere but is present in the deep photosphere. We also derive radial and rotational velocities for all the objects, finding that the previously discovered trend of rapid rotation for very low mass objects is quite pervasive. To improve on our analysis, there is a clear need for better molecular line lists and a more detailed understanding of dust formation and dynamics. △ Less

Observational Limits on Terrestrial-Sized Inner Planets Around the CM Draconis System Using the Photometric Transit Method with a Matched-Filter Algorithm

Abstract: A lightcurve of the eclipsing binary CM Draconis has been analyzed for the presence of transits of planets of size >= 2.5 Earth-radii (Re), with periods of 60 days or less, and in co-planar orbits around the binary system. About 400 million model lightcurves, representing transits from planets with periods ranging from 7 to 60 days, have been matched/correlated against these data. This process w… ▽ More A lightcurve of the eclipsing binary CM Draconis has been analyzed for the presence of transits of planets of size >= 2.5 Earth-radii (Re), with periods of 60 days or less, and in co-planar orbits around the binary system. About 400 million model lightcurves, representing transits from planets with periods ranging from 7 to 60 days, have been matched/correlated against these data. This process we call the "transit detection algorithm" or TDA. The resulting `transit-statistics' for each planet candidate allow the quantification of detection probabilities, and of false alarm rates. Our current lightcurve of CM Dra has a coverage of 1014 hours with 26,043 individual points, at a photometric precision between 0.2% and 0.7%. Planets significantly larger then 3Re would constitute a `supra-noise' detection, and for periods of 60 days or less, they would have been detected with a probability of 90%. `Subnoise' detections of smaller planets are more constrained. For example, 2.5 Re planets with 10-day periods or less would have been detected with an 80% probability. The necessity for predicted observations is illustrated with the nine top planet candidates that emerged from our TDA analysis. They are the planet candidates with the highest transit-statistics from the 1994-1998 observing seasons and, for them, transits for the 1999 observing season were predicted. Of the seven candidates that were then observationally tested in 1999, all were ruled out except one, which needs further observational confirmation. We conclude that the photometric transit method is a viable way to search for relatively small, inner extrasolar planets with moderate-sized telescopes using CCD photometry with a matching-filter analysis. △ Less

The Discovery of a Companion to the Very Cool Dwarf Gl~569~B with the Keck Adaptive Optics Facility

Abstract: We report observations obtained with the Keck adaptive optics facility of the nearby (d=9.8 pc) binary Gl~569. The system was known to be composed of a cool primary (dM2) and a very cool secondary (dM8.5) with a separation of 5" (49 Astronomical Units). We have found that Gl~569~B is itself double with a separation of only 0".101$\pm$0".002 (1 Astronomical Unit). This detection demonstrates the… ▽ More We report observations obtained with the Keck adaptive optics facility of the nearby (d=9.8 pc) binary Gl~569. The system was known to be composed of a cool primary (dM2) and a very cool secondary (dM8.5) with a separation of 5" (49 Astronomical Units). We have found that Gl~569~B is itself double with a separation of only 0".101$\pm$0".002 (1 Astronomical Unit). This detection demonstrates the superb spatial resolution that can be achieved with adaptive optics at Keck. The difference in brightness between Gl~569~B and the companion is $\sim$0.5 magnitudes in the J, H and K' bands. Thus, both objects have similarly red colors and very likely constitute a very low-mass binary system. For reasonable assumptions about the age (0.12~Gyr--1.0~Gyr) and total mass of the system (0.09~M$_\odot$--0.15~M$_\odot$), we estimate that the orbital period is $\sim$3 years. Follow-up observations will allow us to obtain an astrometric orbit solution and will yield direct dynamical masses that can constrain evolutionary models of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. △ Less

An L-type substellar object in Orion: reaching the mass boundary between brown dwarfs and giant planets

It also displays atmospheric features indicative of low gravity such as weak alkaline lines and hydride and oxide bands, consistent with the expectation for a very young object still undergoing gravitational collapse. Our data lead us to conclude that SOri 47 is a true substellar member of the sigma Ori cluster. Additionally, we present the detection of LiI in its atmosphere which provides an independent confirmation of youth and substellarity. Using current theoretical evolutionary tracks and adopting an age interval of 1-5 Myr for the sigma Ori cluster, we estimate the mass of SOri 47 at 0.015+/-0.005 Msun, i.e. at the minimum mass for deuterium burning, which has been proposed as a definition for the boundary between brown dwarfs and giant planets. SOri 47 could well be the result of a natural extension of the process of cloud fragmentation down to the deuterium burning mass limit; a less likely alternative is that it has originated from a protoplanetary disc around a more massive cluster member and later ejected from its orbit due to interacting effects within this rather sparse (~12 objects/pc^3) young cluster. △ Less

Out of 26 bona-fide brown dwarfs, one is newly detected in X-rays, namely rho Oph GY 202. Also, four out of 57 brown dwarf candidates studied here are detected in X-rays, namely the young Taurus brown dwarf candidates MHO-4, MHO-5, V410 Anon 13, and V410 x-ray 3. The M9.5-type star BRI0021-0214 is not detected. In the appendix, we also present catalogued, but as yet unnoticed B- and R-band data for some of the objects studied here. △ Less

Discovery of a Very Low-Mass Binary with HST/NICMOS

One of them, namely CFHT-Pl-18, is clearly resolved as a binary with an angular separation of 0".33. The very low density of contaminating background stars in our images and the photometry of the components support that this system is a physical binary rather than a chance project… ▽ More Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS observations are presented of six brown dwarf candidates in the Pleiades open cluster. All the available photometric and spectroscopic data indicate that the CFHT-Pl-18 system is likely a member of the Pleiades cluster, but a final confirmation will have to wait until lithium can be detected. Assuming cluster membership, we compare our NICMOS photometry with evolutionary models, and find that the inclusion of the effects of dust grains is necessary for fitting the data. We estimate that the masses of the components are about 0.045 Msol and 0.035 Msol. The binary system has a projected separation of 42 AU (for a distance of 125 pc) that is common among stellar binaries. △ Less

The First L-type Brown Dwarf in the Pleiades

Abstract: We have obtained low-resolution optical spectra of three faint brown dwarf candidates in the Pleiades open cluster. The objects observed are Roque 12 (I=18.5), Roque 5 (I=19.7) and Roque 25 (I=21.2). The spectrum of Roque 25 does not show the strong TiO bandheads that characterize the optical spectra of M-type stars, but molecular bands of CaH, CrH and VO are clearly present. We classify Roque 25 as an early L-type brown dwarf. Using current theoretical evolutionary tracks we estimate that the transition from M-type to L-type in the Pleiades (age ~ 120 Myr) takes place at Teff ~ 2200 K or M ~ 0.04 Msol. Roque 25 is a benchmark brown dwarf in the Pleiades because it is the first known one that belongs to the L-type class. It provides evidence that the IMF extends down to about 0.035 Msol, and serves as a guide for future deep searches for even less massive young brown dwarfs. △ Less

The Mass and Age of Very Low Mass Members of the Open Cluster Alpha Persei

Abstract: We present spectroscopic optical and photometric infrared observations of 12 faint candidate members of the young open cluster Alpha Persei found by Prosser (1994). Keck HIRES echelle spectra provide radial and rotational velocity measurements for five objects, two of which are clearly nonmembers based on the radial velocities. These kinematic nonmembers also do not fit well in the V-I vs I-J cl… ▽ More We present spectroscopic optical and photometric infrared observations of 12 faint candidate members of the young open cluster Alpha Persei found by Prosser (1994). Keck HIRES echelle spectra provide radial and rotational velocity measurements for five objects, two of which are clearly nonmembers based on the radial velocities. These kinematic nonmembers also do not fit well in the V-I vs I-J cluster sequence. One additional faint object is likely a nonmember based on a low-resolution spectrum. Using HIRES, we have searched for the Li I resonance line. Combining the absence/presence of lithium and photometry of the faint Alpha Persei targets with confirmed membership constrains their ages and masses. The lack of lithium in AP J0323+4853 implies its age is greater than about 65 Myr, which is older than the cluster classical upper main-sequence turnoff age of 50 Myr. A similar age discrepancy is found in the Pleiades. We detect lithium in the faintest of our program stars, AP270, which implies a mass for it just at the substellar mass limit, given our adopted age and its luminosity. The membership of AP281 is in question because of its high radial velocity compared with the cluster mean. On the other hand AP281 lies on the photometric cluster sequence, and has a very high rotation velocity and H-alpha emission, indicating youth. If a member, its lack of lithium would push the minimum age of the cluster to 75 Myr, in agreement with a very recent upper main-sequence determination. In that case, AP270 would not be a brown dwarf. △ Less

Near-Term Detectability of Terrestrial Extrasolar Planets: TEP Network Observations of CM Draconis

The TEP (Transits of Extrasolar Planets) network has observed this star since 1994, and a lightcurve with 617 hours of coverage has been obtained. The data give a complete phase coverage of the CM Dra system at each of the 3 years of observations, with a noise of less than 5 mmag… ▽ More Results from a photometric search for extrasolar planetary transits across the eclipsing binary CM Dra are presented. The TEP (Transits of Extrasolar Planets) network has observed this star since 1994, and a lightcurve with 617 hours of coverage has been obtained. The data give a complete phase coverage of the CM Dra system at each of the 3 years of observations, with a noise of less than 5 mmag. New epoch and period values for CM Dra are derived, and a low flare rate of 0.025/hr has been confirmed. The absence of periodic variations in eclipse minimum times excludes the presence of very massive planets with periods of less than a few years. The lightcurve was visually scanned for the presence of unusual events which may be indicative of transits of extrasolar planets with 'massive earth' sizes. Six suspicious events were found which are being followed up for future transits, by planets with sizes between 1.5 and 2.5 RE (Earth Radii). However, none of these events has amplitudes compatible with planets larger than 2.5 RE. Coplanar planets larger than 2.5 RE and with orbital periods of less than 60 days can therefore be ruled out with a confidence of about 80%. Planets smaller than 1.5 RE cannot be detected in the data without a sub-noise detection algorithm. A preliminary signal detection analysis shows that there is a 50% detection confidence for 2 RE planets with a period from 10 to 30 days with the current data. This data-set demonstrates that it is possible to detect terrestrial sized planets with ground based photometry, and that strong constraints on the sizes of planets orbiting in the plane of the CM Dra system can be set. △ Less

All the observed properties strongly support the membership of Teide 2 into the Pleiades. This object has an important role in defining the reappearance of lithium below the substellar limit in the Pleiades.
