In the last twenty years, there have been significant advances in the study of the blow-up phenomenon for the critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation, including the determination of sufficient conditions for blowup, the stability of blowup in a refined topology and the classification of minimal mass blowup. Exotic blow-up solutions with a continuum of blow-up rates and multi-point blow-up solutions were also constructed. However, all these results, as well as numerical simulations, involve the bubbling of a solitary wave going at infinity at the blow-up time, which means that the blow-up dynamics and the residue are eventually uncoupled. Even at the formal level, there was no indication whether blowup at a finite point could occur for this equation. In this article, we answer this question by constructing solutions that blow up in finite time under the form of a single-bubble concentrating the ground state at a finite point with an unforeseen blow-up rate. Finding a blow-up rate intermediate between the self-similar rate and other rates previously known also reopens the question of which blow-up rates are actually possible for this equation.

First, we prove that 2-solitary waves with same sign do not exist. Second, we construct and classify the full family of 2-solitary waves in the case of opposite signs. Close to the sum of two remote solitary waves, it turns out that only the components of the initial data in the unstable direction of each ground state are relevant in the large time asymptotic behavior of the solution. In particular, we show that $2$-solitary waves have a universal behavior: the distance between the solitary waves is asymptotic to $\log t$ as $t\to \infty$. This behavior is due to dam** of the initial data combined with strong interactions between the solitary waves.

We refine this ansatz inductively, using ODE techniques. We complete the proof by energy estimates and a compactness argument. This strategy is reminiscent of~[3, 4].

We follow the strategy developed in our previous work [arXiv 1812.03949] on the construction of solutions of the nonlinear wave equation blowing up at any prescribed compact set. Here to prove blowup on a local space-like hypersurface, we first apply a change of variable to reduce the problem to blowup on a small ball at $t=0$ for a transformed equation. The construction of an appropriate approximate solution is then combined with an energy method for the existence of a solution of the transformed problem that blows up at $t=0$. To obtain a finite-energy solution of the original problem from trace arguments, we need to work with $H^2\times H^1$ solutions for the transformed problem.

We consider the dynamics of even solutions of the one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation $\partial_t^2 φ- \partial_x^2 φ+ φ- |φ|^{2α} φ=0$ for $α>1$, in the vicinity of the unstable soliton $Q$. Our main result is that stability in the energy space $H^1(\mathbb R)\times L^2(\mathbb R)$ implies asymptotic stability in a local energy norm. In particular, there exists a Lipschitz graph of initial data leading to stable and asymptotically stable trajectories.
The condition $α>1$ corresponds to cases where the linearized operator around $Q$ has no resonance and no internal mode. Recall that the case $α>2$ is treated in Krieger-Nakanishi-Schlag using Strichartz and other local dispersive estimates. Since these tools are not available for low power nonlinearities, our approach is based on virial type estimates and the particular structure of the linearized operator observed in Chang-Gustafson-Nakanishi-Tsai.

For the mass critical generalized KdV equation $\partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + u^5)=0$ on $\mathbb R$, we construct a full family of flattening solitary wave solutions. Let $Q$ be the unique even positive solution of $Q''+Q^5=Q$. For any $ν\in (0,\frac 13)$, there exist global (for $t\geq 0$) solutions of the equation with the asymptotic behavior \begin{equation*} u(t,x)= t^{-\fracν2} Q\left(t^{-ν} (x-x(t))\right)+w(t,x) \end{equation*} where, for some $c>0$, \begin{equation*} x(t)\sim c t^{1-2ν} \quad \mbox{and}\quad \|w(t)\|_{H^1(x>\frac 12 x(t))} \to 0\quad \mbox{as $t\to +\infty$.} \end{equation*} Moreover, the initial data for such solutions can be taken arbitrarily close to a solitary wave in the energy space. The long-time flattening of the solitary wave is forced by a slowly decaying tail in the initial data.
This result and its proof are inspired and complement recent blow-up results for the critical generalized KdV equation. This article is also motivated by previous constructions of exotic behaviors close to solitons for other nonlinear dispersive equations such as the energy-critical wave equation.

First, we justify the existence of a symmetric 2-solitary wave with logarithmic distance, more precisely a solution of the system satisfying \[ \lim_{t\to +\infty}\left\| \begin{pmatrix} u(t) \\ v(t)\end{pmatrix} - \begin{pmatrix} e^{it}Q (\cdot - \frac{1}{2} \log (Ωt) - \frac{1}{4} \log \log t) \\ e^{it}Q (\cdot + \frac{1}{2} \log (Ωt) + \frac{1}{4} \log \log t)\end{pmatrix}\right\|_{H^1\times H^1} = 0\] where $Q = \sqrt{2}{\rm sech}$ is the explicit solution of $ Q'' - Q + Q^3 = 0$ and $Ω>0$ is a constant. This result extends to the non-integrable case the existence of symmetric 2-solitons with logarithmic distance known in the integrable case $ω=0$ and $ω=1$. Such strongly interacting symmetric $2$-solitary waves were also previously constructed for the non-integrable scalar nonlinear Schrödinger equation in any space dimension and for any energy-subcritical power nonlinearity.
Second, under the conditions $0<c<1$ and $0<ω< \frac 12 c(c+1)$, we construct solutions of the system satisfying \[ \lim_{t\to +\infty}\left\| \begin{pmatrix}u(t) \\ v(t)\end{pmatrix} - \begin{pmatrix}e^{i c^2 t}Q_c (\cdot - \frac{1}{(c+1)c} \log (Ω_c t) ) \\ e^{i t} Q (\cdot + \frac{1}{c+1} \log (Ω_c t))\end{pmatrix} \right\|_{H^1\times H^1}=0\] where $Q_c(x)=cQ(cx)$ and $Ω_c>0$ is a constant. Such logarithmic regime with non-symmetric solitons does not exist in the integrable cases $ω=0$ and $ω=1$ and is still unknown in the non-integrable scalar case.

For the focusing energy critical wave equation in 5D, we construct a solution showing the inelastic nature of the collision of any two solitons, except the special case of two solitons of same scaling and opposite signs. Beyond its own interest as one of the first rigorous studies of the collision of solitons for a non-integrable model, the case of the quartic gKdV equation being partially treated by the authors in previous works, this result can be seen as part of a wider program aiming at establishing the soliton resolution conjecture for the critical wave equation. This conjecture has already been established in the 3D radial case and in the general case in 3, 4 and 5D along a sequence of times by Duyckaerts, Kenig and Merle. The study of the nature of the collision requires a refined approximate solution of the two-soliton problem and a precise determination of its space asymptotics. Due to strong interactions between the bubbles, it also relies decisively on the sharp properties of the minimal mass blow up solution (single bubble case) proved by the authors in arXiv:1602.03519.

We construct a minimal mass blow up solution of the modified Benjamin-Ono equation (mBO) \[ u_{t}+(u^3-D^1 u)_{x}=0, \] which is a standard mass critical dispersive model. Let $Q\in H^{\frac 12}$, $Q>0$, be the unique ground state solution of $D^1 Q +Q=Q^3$, constructed using variational arguments by Weinstein (Comm. PDE, 12 (1987), J. Diff. Eq., 69 (1987)) and Albert, Bona and Saut (Proc. Royal London Soc., 453 (1997)), and whose uniqueness was recently proved by Frank and Lenzmann (Acta Math., 210 (2013)).
We show the existence of a solution $S$ of (mBO) satisfying $\|S \|_{L^2}=\|Q\|_{L^2}$ and \[ S(t)-\frac1{λ^{\frac12}(t)} Q\left(\frac{\cdot - x(t)}{λ(t)}\right)\to 0\quad \mbox{ in }\ H^{\frac 12}(\mathbb R) \mbox{ as }\ t\downarrow 0, \] where \[ λ(t)\sim t,\quad x(t) \sim -|\ln t| \quad \hbox{and}\quad \|S(t)\|_{\dot H^{\frac 12}} \sim t^{-\frac 12}\|Q\|_{\dot H^{\frac 12}} \quad \hbox{as}\ t\downarrow 0. \] This existence result is analogous to the one obtained by Martel, Merle and Raphaël (J. Eur. Math. Soc., 17 (2015)) for the mass critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. However, in contrast with the (gKdV) equation, for which the blow up problem is now well-understood in a neighborhood of the ground state, $S$ is the first example of blow up solution for (mBO).
The proof involves the construction of a blow up profile, energy estimates as well as refined localization arguments, developed in the context of Benjamin-Ono type equations by Kenig, Martel and Robbiano (Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré, Anal. Non Lin., 28 (2011)). Due to the lack of information on the (mBO) flow around the ground state, the energy estimates have to be considerably sharpened in the present paper.

First, we show that there exist universal smooth profiles $Q_k\in\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R})$ (with $Q_0=Q$) and a constant $c_0\in\mathbb{R}$ such that, fixing the blow up time at $t=0$ and appropriate scaling and translation parameters, $S$ satisfies, for any $m\geqslant 0$, \[ \partial_x^m S(t) - \sum_{k=0}^{[m/2]} \frac 1{t^{\frac 12+m-2k}} Q_k^{(m-k)}\left(\frac{\cdot+ \frac1t}{t}+c_0\right)\to 0\quad \mbox{in}\ L^2 \mbox{as}\ t\downarrow 0. \] Second, we prove that, for $0<t\ll 1$, $x\leqslant -\frac 1t -1$, \[ S(t,x) \sim - \frac 12 \|Q\|_{L^1} |x|^{-3/2}, \] and related bounds for the derivatives of $S(t)$ of any order. We also prove $\int_{\mathbb{R}} S(t,x)\,dx=0$.

We construct a new class of multi-solitary wave solutions for the mass critical two dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). Given any integer K>1, there exists a global (for positive time) solution of (NLS) that decomposes asymptotically into a sum of solitary waves centered at the vertices of a K-sided regular polygon and concentrating at a logarithmic rate in large time. This solution blows up in infinite time with logarithmic rate. Using the pseudo-conformal transform, this yields the first example of solution blowing up in finite time with a rate strictly above the pseudo-conformal one. Such solution concentrates K bubbles at a point. These special behaviors are due to strong interactions between the waves, in contrast with previous works on multi-solitary waves of (NLS) where interactions do not affect the blow up rate.

We consider a classical equation known as the $φ^4$ model in one space dimension. The kink, defined by $H(x)=\tanh(x/{\sqrt{2}})$, is an explicit stationary solution of this model. From a result of Henry, Perez and Wreszinski it is known that the kink is orbitally stable with respect to small perturbations of the initial data in the energy space. In this paper we show asymptotic stability of the kink for odd perturbations in the energy space. The proof is based on Virial-type estimates partly inspired from previous works of Martel and Merle on asymptotic stability of solitons for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. However, this approach has to be adapted to additional difficulties, pointed out by Soffer and Weinstein in the case of general Klein-Gordon equations with potential: the interactions of the so-called internal oscillation mode with the radiation, and the different rates of decay of these two components of the solution in large time.

In arXiv:0910.3204, for nearly equal solitons, the solution u(t) is computed up to some order of epsilon=1-c2/c1, everywhere in time and space. In particular, it is deduced that u(t) is not a multi-soliton for large negative time, proving the nonexistence of pure multi-soliton in this context.
In the present paper, we prove the same result for an explicit range of speeds: 3/4 c1< c2< c1, by a different approach, which does not longer require a precise description of the solution. In fact, the nonexistence result holds for outgoing N-solitons, for any N>1, under an explicit assumption on the speeds, which is a natural generalization of the condition for N=2.

We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with double power nonlinearity, where one power is focusing and mass critical and the other mass sub-critical. Classical variational arguments ensure that initial data with mass less than the mass of the ground state of the mass critical problem lead to global in time solutions. We are interested by the threshold dynamic and in particular by the existence of finite time blow up minimal solutions. For the mass critical problem, such an object exists thanks to the explicit conformal symmetry, and is in fact unique. For the focusing double power nonlinearity, we exhibit a new class of minimal blow up solutions with blow up rates deeply affected by the double power nonlinearity. The analysis adapts the recent approach developed by Raphaël and Szeftel for the construction of minimal blow up elements.

In Part II, we classify minimal mass blow up by proving existence and uniqueness (up to invariances of the equation) of a minimal mass blow up solution $S(t)$. We also completely describe the blow up behavior of $S(t)$.
Second, we prove that $S(t)$ is the universal attractor in the (EXIT) case, i.e. any solution as above in the (EXIT) case is close to $S$ (up to invariances) in $L^2$ at the exit time. In particular, assuming scattering for $S(t)$ (in large positive time), we obtain that any solution in the (EXIT) scenario also scatters, thus achieving the description of the near soliton dynamics.

This paper concerns the problem of collision of two solitons for the quartic generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. We introduce a new framework to describe the collision in the special case where one soliton is small with respect to the other. We prove that the two soliton survive the collision, we describe the collision phenomenon (computation of the first order of the resulting shifts on the solitons). Moreover, we prove that in this situation, there does not exist pure two-soliton solutions.

Abstract:
We consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation $$ \partial_t u + \partial_x (\partial_x^2 u + f(u))=0, \quad (t,x)\in [0,T)\times \mathbb{R}$$ with general $C^2$ nonlinearity $f$. Under an explicit condition on $f$ and $c>0$, there exists a solution in the energy space $H^1$ of the type $u(t,x)=Q_c(x-x_0-ct)$, called soliton. Stability theory for $Q_c$ is well-known.

Under an explicit condition on $f$ and $c>0$, there exists a solution in the energy space $H^1$ of the type $u(t,x)=Q_c(x-x_0-ct)$, called soliton. Stability theory for $Q_c$ is well-known.
In previous works, we have proved that for $f(u)=u^p$, $p=2,3,4$, the family of solitons is asymptotically stable in some local sense in $H^1$, i.e. if $u(t)$ is close to $Q_{c}$ (for all $t\geq 0$), then $u(t,.+ρ(t))$ locally converges in the energy space to some $Q_{c_+}$ as $t\to +\infty$, for some $c^+\sim c$.
Then, the asymptotic stability result could be extended to the case of general assumptions on $f$ and $Q_c$.
The objective of this paper is twofold.
The main objective is to prove that in the case $f(u)=u^p$, $p=2,3,4$, $ρ(t)-c_+ t$ has limit as $t\to +\infty$ under the additional assumption $x_+ u\in L^2$.
The second objective of this paper is to provide large time stability and asymptotic stability results for two soliton solutions for the case of general nonlinearity $f(u)$, when the ratio of the speeds of the solitons is small. The motivation is to accompany forthcoming works devoted to the collision of two solitons in the nonintegrable case. The arguments are refinements of previous works specialized to the case $u(t)\sim Q_{c_1}+Q_{c_2}$, for $0< c_2 \ll c_1$.

In this paper, under general assumptions on $f$ and $Q_c$, we prove that the family of soliton solutions around $Q_c$ is asymptotically stable in some local sense in $H^1$, i.e. if $u(t)$ is close to $Q_{c}$ (for all $t\geq 0$), then $u(t)$ locally converges in the energy space to some $Q_{c_+}$ as $t\to +\infty$. Note in particular that we do not assume the stability of $Q_{c}$. This result is based on a rigidity property of equation (1) around $Q_{c}$ in the energy space whose proof relies on the introduction of a dual problem. These results extend the main results in previous works devoted to the pure power case.

The generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations are a class of Hamiltonian systems in infinite dimension derived from the KdV equation where the quadratic term is replaced by a higher order power term. These equations have two conservation laws in the energy space H^1(L^2 norm and energy). We consider in this paper the {\it critical} generalized KdV equation, which corresponds to the smallest power of the nonlinearity such that the two conservation laws do not imply a bound in H^1 uniform in time for all H^1 solutions (and thus global existence).
From [15], there do exist for this equation solutions u(t) such that |u(t)|_{H^1} \to +\infty as T\uparrow T, where T\le +\infty (we call them blow-up solutions). The question is to describe, in a qualitative way, how blow up occurs.
For solutions with L^2 mass close to the minimal mass allowing blow up and with decay in L^2 at the right, we prove after rescaling and translation which leave invariant the L^2 norm that the solution converges to a {\it universal} profile locally in space at the blow-up time T. From the nature of this profile, we improve the standard lower bound on the blow-up rate for finite time blow-up solutions.

Abstract:
We prove in this paper the stability and asymptotic stability in H^1 of a decoupled sum of N solitons for the subcritical generalized KdV equations $u_t+(u_{xx}+u^p)_x=0$ (1<p<5). The proof of the stability result is based on energy arguments and monotonicity of local L^2 norm. Note that the result is new even for p=2 (the KdV equation).
