Growth tightness and genericity for word metrics from injective spaces
Abstract: Map** class groups are known to admit geometric (proper, cobounded) actions on injective spaces. Starting with such an action, and relying only on geometric arguments, we show that all finite generating sets resulting from taking large enough balls (as in the Švarc-Milnor lemma) in the respective injective space yield word metrics where pseudo-Anosov maps are exponentially generic. We also show… ▽ More

Dual spaces of geodesic currents
Abstract: Every geodesic current on a hyperbolic surface has an associated dual space. If the current is a lamination, this dual embeds isometrically into a real tree. We show that, in general, the dual space is a Gromov hyperbolic metric tree-graded space, and express its Gromov hyperbolicity constant in terms of the geodesic current. In the case of geodesic currents with no atoms and full support, such as… ▽ More

Comments: 73 pages, 9 figures. Many changes: old appendix A (expositional) has been removed. Minor typos corrected throughout the text. Old section 5.1.1. has been expanded and a mistake corrected. A gap has been addressed in old Theorem 10.4. which weakens its final statement. Sections 4, 8 and 9 have been revised and expanded. Comments are welcome!

Volume bounds for the canonical lift complement of a random geodesic
Abstract: Given a filling primitive geodesic curve in a closed hyperbolic surface one obtains a hyperbolic three-manifold as the complement of the curve's canonical lift to the projective tangent bundle. In this paper we give the first known lower bound for the volume of these manifolds in terms of the length of generic curves. We show that estimating the volume from below can be reduced to a counting probl… ▽ More

The extremal length systole of the Bolza surface
Abstract: We prove that the extremal length systole of genus two surfaces attains a strict local maximum at the Bolza surface, where it takes the value $\sqrt{2}$.

From curves to currents
Abstract: Many natural real-valued functions of closed curves are known to extend continuously to the larger space of geodesic currents. For instance, the extension of length with respect to a fixed hyperbolic metric was a motivating example for the development of geodesic currents. We give a simple criterion on a curve function that guarantees a continuous extension to geodesic currents. The main condition… ▽ More

Comparing hyperbolic and extremal lengths for shortest curves
Abstract: We give a linear upper bound for the extremal length in terms of the hyperbolic length for curves of a shortest pair of pants decomposition. As a consequence, we obtain results on the asymptotics of the maximum of the extremal length systole in moduli space for large genus. We also obtain upper bounds for the extremal length of shortest pair of pants decompositions and for the renormalized volume… ▽ More
