Non perturbative renormalization group approach to surface growth
Abstract: We present a recently introduced real space renormalization group (RG) approach to the study of surface growth. The method permits us to obtain the properties of the KPZ strong coupling fixed point, which is not accessible to standard perturbative field theory approaches. Using this method, and with the aid of small Monte Carlo calculations for systems of linear size 2 and 4, we calculate the… ▽ More

Critical exponents of the anisotropic Bak-Sneppen model
Abstract: We analyze the behavior of spatially anisotropic Bak-Sneppen model. We demonstrate that a nontrivial relation between critical exponents tau and mu=d/D, recently derived for the isotropic Bak-Sneppen model, holds for its anisotropic version as well. For one-dimensional anisotropic Bak-Sneppen model we derive a novel exact equation for the distribution of avalanche spatial sizes, and extract the… ▽ More

Non-perturbative renormalization of the KPZ growth dynamics
Abstract: We introduce a non-perturbative renormalization approach which identifies stable fixed points in any dimension for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang dynamics of rough surfaces. The usual limitations of real space methods to deal with anisotropic (self-affine) scaling are overcome with an indirect functional renormalization. The roughness exponent $α$ is computed for dimensions $d=1$ to 8 and it results to… ▽ More

Self Organization of Interacting Polya Urns
Abstract: We introduce a simple model which shows non-trivial self organized critical properties. The model describes a system of interacting units, modelled by Polya urns, subject to perturbations and which occasionally break down. Three equivalent formulations - stochastic, quenched and deterministic - are shown to reproduce the same dynamics. Among the novel features of the model are a non-homogeneous… ▽ More

On the High-dimensional Bak-Sneppen model
Abstract: We report on extensive numerical simulations on the Bak-Sneppen model in high dimensions. We uncover a very rich behavior as a function of dimensionality. For d>2 the avalanche cluster becomes fractal and for d \ge 4 the process becomes transient. Finally the exponents reach their mean field values for d=d_c=8, which is then the upper critical dimension of the Bak Sneppen model.

Stochastic Dynamics in Game Theory
Abstract: We introduce a simple stochastic dynamics for game theory. It assumes ``local'' rationality in the sense that any player climbs the gradient of his utility function in the presence of a stochastic force which represents deviation from rationality in the form of a ``heat bath''. We focus on particular games of a large number of players with a global interaction which is typical of economic system… ▽ More

Dynamical Optimization Theory of a Diversified Portfolio
Abstract: We propose and study a simple model of dynamical redistribution of capital in a diversified portfolio. We consider a hypothetical situation of a portfolio composed of N uncorrelated stocks. Each stock price follows a multiplicative random walk with identical drift and dispersion. The rules of our model naturally give rise to power law tails in the distribution of capital fractions invested in di… ▽ More

Expansion Around the Mean-Field Solution of the Bak-Sneppen Model
Abstract: We study a recently proposed equation for the avalanche distribution in the Bak-Sneppen model. We demonstrate that this equation indirectly relates $τ$,the exponent for the power law distribution of avalanche sizes, to $D$, the fractal dimension of an avalanche cluster. We compute this relation numerically and approximate it analytically up to the second order of expansion around the mean field e… ▽ More

A Prototype Model of Stock Exchange
Abstract: A prototype model of stock market is introduced and studied numerically. In this self-organized system, we consider only the interaction among traders without external influences. Agents trade according to their own strategy, to accumulate his assets by speculating on the price's fluctuations which are produced by themselves. The model reproduced rather realistic price histories whose statistica… ▽ More

Scaling Behavior in the Stable Marriage Problem
Abstract: We study the optimization of the stable marriage problem. All individuals attempt to optimize their own satisfaction, subject to mutually conflicting constraints. We find that the stable solutions are generally not the globally best solution, but reasonably close to it. All the stable solutions form a special sub-set of the meta-stable states, obeying interesting scaling laws. Both numerical and… ▽ More

Fluctuations around Nash Equilibria in Game Theory
Abstract: We investigate the fluctuations induced by irrationality in simple games with a large number of competing players. We show that Nash equilibria in such games are ``weakly'' stable: irrationality propagates and amplifies through players' interactions so that huge fluctuations can results from a small amount of irrationality. In the presence of multiple Nash equilibria, our statistical approach al… ▽ More

Theory of Self-organized Criticality for Problems with Extremal Dynamics
Abstract: We introduce a general theoretical scheme for a class of phenomena characterized by an extremal dynamics and quenched disorder. The approach is based on a transformation of the quenched dynamics into a stochastic one with cognitive memory and on other concepts which permit a mathematical characterization of the self-organized nature of the avalanche type dynamics. Probabilistic Fragmentation and Effective Power Law
Abstract: A simple fragmentation model is introduced and analysed. We show that, under very general conditions, an effective power law for the mass distribution arises with realistic exponent. This exponent has a universal limit, but in practice the effective exponent depends on the detailed breaking mechanism and the initial conditions. This dependence is in good agreement with experimental results of fr… ▽ More

Diffusion in disordered media as a process with memory
Abstract: The problem of a random walk in a disordered media is mapped into a model of a random walk with memory. The latter model, as opposed to the former one, does not make reference to a particular realization of the disorder. The equivalence of the two models implies that the new model retrieves dynamically a realization of disorder; the only one which is consistent with its dynamics. In this new app… ▽ More

Stochastic Growth Equations and Reparametrization Invariance
Abstract: It is shown that, by imposing reparametrization invariance, one may derive a variety of stochastic equations describing the dynamics of surface growth and identify the physical processes responsible for the various terms. Soluble Infinite-Range Model of Kinetic Roughening
Abstract: A modified Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation is introduced, and solved exactly in the infinite-range limit. In the low-noise limit the system exhibits a weak-to-strong coupling transition, rounded for non-zero noise, as a function of the KPZ non-linearity. The strong-coupling regime is characterised by a double-peaked height distribution in the stationary state. The nonstationary dynamics is qu… ▽ More

On high dimensional directed polymer in random media
Abstract: Directed polymers in random media are studied using results of the asymptotic theory of extreme statistics. Despite the strong correlation, one can recover the behavior of independent random variables for high dimensions, using a result which requires only a control of pairwise correlation, and focussing on ensembles of low energy directed polymers.

Memory and Self Organization
Abstract: The main result of this letter is that SOC naturally arises as a result of memory effects. We show that memory effects provide the mechanism for self organization. The simplest class of models exhibiting self organized criticality through this mechanism… ▽ More

Glassy Solutions of the Kardar-Pasrisi-Zhang Equation
Abstract: It is shown that the mode-coupling equations for the strong-coupling limit of the KPZ equation have a solution for d>4 such that the dynamic exponent z is 2 (with possible logarithmic corrections) and that there is a delta function term in the height correlation function <h(k,w)h^*(k,w)> = (A/k^{d+4-z}) δ(w/k^z) where the amplitude A vanishes as d -> 4. Pair Description of the FQHE with Application to Edge Waves
