Magnetic resonance is a prime method for the study of chemical and biological structures and their dynamical processes. The interpretation of these experiments relies on considering the spin of electrons as the sole relevant degree of freedom. By applying ab inito open quantum systems theory to the full electronic wavefunction, here we show that contrary to this widespread framework the thermalization of the unpaired electron spin of two Cr(V) coordination compounds is driven by virtual transitions to excited states with energy higher than 20,000 1/cm instead of solely involving low-energy spin interactions such as Zeeman and hyperfine ones. Moreover, we found that a window of low-energy THz phonons contributes to thermalization, rather than a small number of high-energy vibrations. This work provides a drastic reinterpretation of relaxation in spin-1/2 systems and its chemical control strategies, and ultimately exemplifies the urgency of further advancing an ab initio approach to relaxometry.

Vibronic coupling has a dramatic influence over a large number of molecular processes, ranging from photo-chemistry, to spin relaxation and electronic transport. The simulation of vibronic coupling with multi-reference wavefunction methods has been largely applied to organic compounds, and only early efforts are available for open-shell systems such as transition metal and lanthanide complexes. In this work, we derive a numerical strategy to differentiate the molecular electronic Hamiltonian in the context of multi-reference ab initio methods and inclusive of spin-orbit coupling effects. We then provide a formulation of open quantum system dynamics able to predict the time evolution of the electrons' density matrix under the influence of a Markovian phonon bath up to fourth-order perturbation theory. We apply our method to Co(II) and Dy(III) molecular complexes exhibiting long spin relaxation times and successfully validate our strategy against the use of an effective spin Hamiltonian. Our study shed light on the nature of vibronic coupling, the importance of electronic excited states in spin relaxation, and the need for high-level computational chemistry to quantify it.

During the past decades, approximate Kohn-Sham density-functional theory schemes garnered many successes in computational chemistry and physics; yet the performance in the prediction of spin state energetics is often unsatisfactory. By means of a machine-learning approach, an enhanced exchange and correlation functional is developed to describe adiabatic energy differences in transition metal complexes. The functional is based on the computationally efficient revision of the regularized strongly constrained and appropriately normed (R2SCAN) functional and improved by an artificial neural-network correction trained over a small dataset of electronic densities, atomization energies and/or spin state energetics. The training process, performed using a bio-inspired non gradient-based approach adapted for this work from Particle Swarm Optimization, is discussed in detail. The meta-GGA functional is finally shown to outperform most known density functionals in the prediction of adiabatic energy differences for both the validation test and the generality test.

Abstract:
We recently showed that the DFT+U approach with a linear-response U yields adiabatic energy differences biased towards high spin [Mariano et al. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2020, 16, 6755-6762]. Such bias is removed here by employing a density-corrected DFT approach where the PBE functional is evaluated on the Hubbard U -corrected density. The adiabatic energy differences of six Fe(II) molecular complexes computed using this approach, named here PBE[U], are in excellent agreement with coupled luster-corrected CASPT2 values for both weak- and strong-field ligands resulting in a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.44 eV, smaller than the recently proposed Hartree-Fock density-corrected DFT (1.22 eV) and any other tested functional, including the best performer TPSSh (0.49 eV). We take advantage of the computational efficiency of this approach and compute the adiabatic energy differences of five molecular crystals using PBE[U] with periodic boundary conditions. The results show, again, an excellent agreement (MAE=0.07 eV) with experimentally-extracted values and a superior performance compared with the best performers TPSSh (MAE=0.08 eV) and M06-L (MAE=0.31 eV) computed on molecular fragments.

The microscopic do** mechanism behind the superconductor-to-insulator transition of a thin film of YBa2Cu3O7 was recently identified as due to the migration of O atoms from the CuO chains of the film. Here we employ density-functional theory calculations to study the evolution of the electronic structure of a slab of YBa2 Cu3 O7 in presence of oxygen vacancies under the influence of an external electric field. We find that under massive electric fields isolated O atoms are pulled out of the surface consisting of CuO chains. As vacancies accumulate at the surface, a configuration with vacancies located in the chains inside the slab becomes energetically preferred thus providing a driving force for O migration towards the surface. Regardless of the defect configuration studied, the electric field is always fully screened near the surface thus negligibly affecting diffusion barriers across the film.

We recently demonstrated that the superconductor-to-insulator transition induced by ionic liquid gating of the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) is accompanied by a deoxygenation of the sample [Perez-Munoz et al., PNAS 114, 215 (2017)]. DFT calculations helped establish that the pronounced changes in the spectral features of the Cu K-edge absorption spectra measured in situ during the gating experiment arise from a decrease of the Cu coordination within the CuO chains. In this work, we provide a detailed analysis of the electronic structure origin of the changes in the spectra resulting from three different types of do**: i) the formation of oxygen vacancies within the CuO chains, ii) the formation of oxygen vacancies within the CuO2 planes and iii) the electrostatic do**. For each case, three stoichiometries are studied and compared to the stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7, i.e YBa2Cu3O6.75, YBa2Cu3O6.50 and YBa2Cu3O6.25. Computed vacancy formation energies further support the chain-vacancy mechanism. In the case of do** by vacancies within the chains, we study the effect of oxygen ordering on the spectral features and we clarify the connection between the polarization of the x-rays and this do** mechanism. Finally, the inclusion of the Hubbard U correction on the computed spectra for antiferromagnetic YBa2Cu3O6.25 is discussed.
