Relativistic causality constrains the $S$-matrix both through its analyticity, and by imposing lower bounds on the scattering time delay. These bounds are easiest to determine for spacetimes which admit either a timelike or null Killing vector. We revisit a class of pp-wave spacetimes and carefully determine the scattering time delay for arbitrary incoming states in the eikonal, semi-classical, and Born approximations. We apply this to the EFT of gravity in arbitrary dimensions. It is well-known that higher-dimension operators such as the Gauss-Bonnet term, when treated perturbatively at low energies, can appear to make both positive and negative contributions to the time delays of the background geometry. We show that even when multiple shockwaves are stacked, the corrections to the scattering time delay relative to the background are generically unresolvable within the regime of validity of the effective field theory so long as the Wilson coefficients are of order unity. This is in agreement with previously derived positivity/bootstrap bounds and the requirement that infrared causality be maintained in consistent low-energy effective theories, irrespective of the UV completion.

Abstract:
We distinguish between the notions of asymptotic causality and infrared causality for gravitational effective field theories, and show that the latter gives constraints consistent with gravitational positivity bounds. We re-explore the scattering of gravitational waves in a spherically symmetric background in the EFT of gravity in $D\ge 5$, for which the leading-order correction to Einstein gravit…

We distinguish between the notions of asymptotic causality and infrared causality for gravitational effective field theories, and show that the latter gives constraints consistent with gravitational positivity bounds. We re-explore the scattering of gravitational waves in a spherically symmetric background in the EFT of gravity in $D\ge 5$, for which the leading-order correction to Einstein gravity is determined by the Gauss-Bonnet operator. We reproduce the known result that the truncated effective theory exhibits apparent time advances relative to the background geometry for specific polarisations, which naively signal a violation of causality. We show that by properly identifying the regime of validity of the effective theory, the apparent time advance can be shown to be unresolvable. To illustrate this, we identify specific higher-dimension operators in the EFT expansion which become large for potentially resolvable time advances, rendering the EFT expansion invalid. Our results demonstrate how staying within the confines of the EFT, neither infrared nor asymptotic causality are ever violated for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, no matter how low the scale, and furthermore its causality can be understood without appealing to a precise UV completion such as string theory.

Abstract:
Metric perturbations affect the phase of gravitational waves as they propagate through the inhomogeneous universe. This effect causes Stochastic Gravitational Wave Backgrounds (SGWBs) to lose any phase coherence that may have been present at emission or horizon entry. We show that, for a standard cosmological model, this implies complete loss of coherence above frequencies $f \sim 10^{-12}$ Hz. Th…

The result is that any attempts to map SGWBs using phase-coherent methods have no foreseeable applications. Incoherent methods that solve directly for the intensity of the SGWBs are the only methods that can reconstruct the angular dependence of any SGWB.

The superradiant instability modes of ultralight massive vector bosons are studied for weakly charged rotating black holes in Einstein--Maxwell gravity (the Kerr--Newman solution) and low-energy heterotic string theory (the Kerr--Sen black hole). We show that in both these cases, the corresponding massive vector (Proca) equations can be fully separated, exploiting the hidden symmetry present in these spacetimes. The resultant ordinary differential equations are solved numerically to find the most unstable modes of the Proca field in the two backgrounds and compared to the vacuum (Kerr black hole) case.

Many black hole spacetimes with a 3-form field exhibit a hidden symmetry encoded in a torsion generalization of the principal Killing--Yano tensor. This tensor determines basic properties of such black holes while also underlying the separability of the Hamilton--Jacobi, Klein--Gordon, and (torsion-modified) Dirac field equations in their background. As a specific example, we consider the Chong--Cvetič--Lü--Pope black hole of $D=5$ minimal gauged supergravity and show that the torsion-modified vector field equations can also be separated, with the principal tensor playing a key role in the separability ansatz. For comparison, separability of the Proca field in higher-dimensional Kerr--NUT--AdS spacetimes (including new explicit formulae in odd dimensions) is also presented.
