Mean curvature flow with generic low-entropy initial data II
Abstract: We prove that the mean curvature flow of a generic closed embedded hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^4$ or $\mathbb{R}^5$ with entropy $\leq 2$, or with entropy $\leq λ(\mathbb{S}^1)$ if in $\mathbb{R}^6$, encounters only generic singularities.

Improved generic regularity of codimension-1 minimizing integral currents
Abstract: Let $Γ$ be a smooth, closed, oriented, $(n-1)$-dimensional submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We show that there exist arbitrarily small perturbations $Γ'$ of $Γ$ with the property that minimizing integral $n$-currents with boundary $Γ'$ are smooth away from a set of Hausdorff dimension $\leq n-9-\varepsilon_n$, where $\varepsilon_n \in (0, 1]$ is a dimensional constant. This improves on our pre… ▽ More

Decomposing 4-manifolds with positive scalar curvature

The p-widths of a surface
Abstract: The $p$-widths of a closed Riemannian manifold are a nonlinear analogue of the spectrum of its Laplace--Beltrami operator, which corresponds to areas of a certain min-max sequence of possibly singular minimal submanifolds. We show that the $p$-widths of any closed Riemannian two-manifold correspond to a union of closed immersed geodesics, rather than simply geodesic nets. We then prove optimalit… ▽ More

Metrics with $λ_1(-Δ+ k R) \geq 0$ and flexibility in the Riemannian Penrose Inequality
Abstract: On a closed manifold, consider the space of all Riemannian metrics for which -Delta + kR is positive (nonnegative) definite, where k > 0 and R is the scalar curvature. This spectral generalization of positive (nonnegative) scalar curvature arises naturally for different values of k in the study of scalar curvature via minimal hypersurfaces, the Yamabe problem, and Perelman's Ricci flow with surger… ▽ More

Mean curvature flow with generic low-entropy initial data
Abstract: We prove that sufficiently low-entropy closed hypersurfaces can be perturbed so that their mean curvature flow encounters only spherical and cylindrical singularities. Our theorem applies to all closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with entropy $\leq 2$ and to all closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with entropy $\leq λ(\mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{R}^2)$. When combined with recent work of Daniels-… ▽ More

Variational aspects of phase transitions with prescribed mean curvature
Abstract: We study the spectrum of phase transitions with prescribed mean curvature in Riemannian manifolds. These phase transitions are solutions to an inhomogeneous semilinear elliptic PDE that give rise to diffuse objects (varifolds) that limit to hypersurfaces, possibly with singularities, whose mean curvature is determined by the "prescribed mean curvature" function and the limiting multiplicity. We es… ▽ More

Mean curvature flow with generic initial data
Abstract: We show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ avoids asymptotically conical and non-spherical compact singularities. We also show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed low-entropy hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ is smooth until it disappears in a round point. The main technical ingredient is a long-time existence and uniqueness result for ancient me… ▽ More

Ancient gradient flows of elliptic functionals and Morse index
Abstract: We study closed ancient solutions to gradient flows of elliptic functionals in Riemannian manifolds, including mean curvature flow and harmonic map heat flow. Our work has various consequences. In all dimensions and codimensions, we classify ancient mean curvature flows in S^n with low area: they are steady or shrinking equatorial spheres. In the mean curvature flow case in S^3, we classify ancien… ▽ More

Capacity, quasi-local mass, and singular fill-ins
Abstract: We derive new inequalities between the boundary capacity of an asymptotically flat 3-manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature and boundary quantities that relate to quasi-local mass; one relates to Brown--York mass and the other is new. We argue by recasting the setup to the study of mean-convex fill-ins with nonnegative scalar curvature and, in the process, we consider fill-ins with singular me… ▽ More

Minimal surfaces and the Allen-Cahn equation on 3-manifolds: index, multiplicity, and curvature estimates
Abstract: The Allen-Cahn equation is a semilinear PDE which is deeply linked to the theory of minimal hypersurfaces via a singular limit. We prove curvature estimates and strong sheet separation estimates for stable solutions (building on recent work of Wang-Wei) of the Allen-Cahn equation on a 3-manifold. Using these, we are able to show for generic metrics on a 3-manifold, minimal surfaces arising from Al… ▽ More

Allen-Cahn min-max on surfaces
Abstract: We use a min-max procedure on the Allen-Cahn energy functional to construct geodesics on closed, 2-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, as motivated by the work of Guaraco. Total mean curvature, scalar curvature, and a variational analog of Brown-York mass
Abstract: We study the supremum of the total mean curvature on the boundary of compact, mean-convex 3-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature, and a prescribed boundary metric. We establish an additivity property for this supremum and exhibit rigidity for maximizers assuming the supremum is attained. When the boundary consists of 2-spheres, we demonstrate that the finiteness of the supremum follows from… ▽ More

Abstract: In this paper we characterize the intrinsic geometry of apparent horizons (outermost marginally outer trapped surfaces) in asymptotically flat spacetimes; that is, the Riemannian metrics on the two sphere which can arise.
