Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) leverages the existing ambient radio frequency (RF) environment to implement communication with battery-free devices. One critical challenge of AmBC systems is signal recovery because the transmitted information bits are embedded in the ambient RF signals and these are unknown and uncontrollable. To address this problem, most existing approaches use averaging-based energy detectors and consequently the data rate is low and there is an error floor. Here we propose a new detection strategy based on the ratio between signals received from a multiple-antenna Reader. The advantage of using the ratio is that ambient RF signals are removed directly from the embedded signals without averaging and hence it can increase data rates and avoid the error floor. Different from original ratio detectors that use the magnitude ratio of the signals between two Reader antennas, in our proposed approach, we utilize the complex ratio so that phase information is preserved and propose an accurate linear channel model approximation. This allows the application of existing linear detection techniques from which we can obtain a minimum distance detector and closed-form expressions for bit error rate (BER). In addition, averaging, coding and interleaving can also be included to further enhance the BER. The results are also general, allowing any number of Reader antennas to be utilized in the approach. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach performs better than approaches based on energy detection and original ratio detectors.

Conventional dc-dc, dc-ac converter control entail an inner current and outer voltage (ICOV) control loop. Stability of multi-loop control is achieved by ensuring faster dynamics of inner loops, often separating the bandwidths by large factors. Heuristically a factor-of-ten has often been used to separate the bandwidths of two adjacent loops in the nested architecture. In this paper, we present a numerical method to optimally select the ratio of bandwidths for a nested controller. We first manipulate the robust framework to show that the optimal $H_\infty$ subsumes the classical inner current outer voltage control. We then use optimality of the proposed $H_\infty$ controller to inspect feasibility of different ratios of bandwidths of the inner and outer controllers. We finally select the numerically closest bandwidths of the two nested loops which the guarantee stability. Simulation models are used to verify the optimal bandwidth separation for a candidate grid-forming dc-ac converter with inner current-outer voltage control.

Automatic Image Captioning is the never-ending effort of creating syntactically and validating the accuracy of textual descriptions of an image in natural language with context. The encoder-decoder structure used throughout existing Bengali Image Captioning (BIC) research utilized abstract image feature vectors as the encoder's input. We propose a novel transformer-based architecture with an attention mechanism with a pre-trained ResNet-101 model image encoder for feature extraction from images. Experiments demonstrate that the language decoder in our technique captures fine-grained information in the caption and, then paired with image features, produces accurate and diverse captions on the BanglaLekhaImageCaptions dataset. Our approach outperforms all existing Bengali Image Captioning work and sets a new benchmark by scoring 0.694 on BLEU-1, 0.630 on BLEU-2, 0.582 on BLEU-3, and 0.337 on METEOR.

We study the secret key rate (SKR) of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) continuous variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) system operating at terahertz (THz) frequencies, accounting for the effects of channel estimation. We propose a practical channel estimation scheme for the THz MIMO CVQKD system which is necessary to realize transmit-receive beamforming between Alice and Bob. We characterize the input-output relation between Alice and Bob during the key generation phase, by incorporating the effects of additional noise terms arising due to the channel estimation error and detector noise. Furthermore, we analyze the SKR of the system and study the effect of channel estimation error and overhead. Our simulation results reveal that the SKR may degrade significantly as compared to the SKR upper bound that assumes perfect channel state information, particularly at large transmission distances.

We propose a machine learning framework for parameter estimation of single mode Gaussian quantum states. Under a Bayesian framework, our approach estimates parameters of suitable prior distributions from measured data. For phase-space displacement and squeezing parameter estimation, this is achieved by introducing Expectation-Maximization (EM) based algorithms, while for phase parameter estimation an empirical Bayes method is applied. The estimated prior distribution parameters along with the observed data are used for finding the optimal Bayesian estimate of the unknown displacement, squeezing and phase parameters. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithms have estimation performance that is very close to that of Genie Aided Bayesian estimators, that assume perfect knowledge of the prior parameters. Our proposed methods can be utilized by experimentalists to find the optimum Bayesian estimate of parameters of Gaussian quantum states by using only the observed measurements without requiring any knowledge about the prior distribution parameters.

We propose a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) quantum key distribution (QKD) scheme for terahertz (THz) frequency applications operating at room temperature. Motivated by classical MIMO communications, a transmit-receive beamforming scheme is proposed that converts the rank-$r$ MIMO channel between Alice and Bob into $r$ parallel lossy quantum channels. Compared with existing single-antenna QKD schemes, we demonstrate that the MIMO QKD scheme leads to performance improvements by increasing the secret key rate and extending the transmission distance. Our simulation results show that multiple antennas are necessary to overcome the high free-space path loss at THz frequencies. We demonstrate a non-monotonic relation between performance and frequency, and reveal that positive key rates are achievable in the $10-30$ THz frequency range. The proposed scheme can be used for both indoor and outdoor QKD applications for beyond fifth-generation ultra-secure wireless communications systems.

In this paper, incremental decode-and-forward (IDF) and incremental selective decode-and-forward (ISDF) relaying are proposed to improve the spectral efficiency of power line communication. Contrary to the traditional decode-and-forward (DF) relaying, IDF and ISDF strategies utilize the relay only if the direct link ceases to attain a certain information rate, thereby improving the spectral efficiency. The path gain through the power line is assumed to be log-normally distributed with high distance-dependent attenuation and the additive noise is from a Bernoulli-Gaussian process. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability, and approximate closed-form expressions for the end-to-end average channel capacity and the average bit error rate for binary phase-shift keying are derived. Furthermore, a closed-form expression for the fraction of times the relay is in use is derived as a measure of the spectral efficiency. Comparative analysis of IDF and ISDF with traditional DF relaying is presented. It is shown that IDF is a specific case of ISDF and can obtain optimal spectral efficiency without compromising the outage performance. By employing power allocation to minimize the outage probability, it is realized that the power should be allocated in accordance with the inter-node distances and channel parameters.

NarrowBand-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a new 3GPP radio access technology designed to provide better coverage for a massive number of low-throughput low-cost devices in delay-tolerant applications with low power consumption. To provide reliable connections with extended coverage, a repetition transmission scheme is introduced to NB-IoT during both Random Access CHannel (RACH) procedure and data transmission procedure. To avoid the difficulty in replacing the battery for IoT devices, the energy harvesting is considered as a promising solution to support energy sustainability in the NB-IoT network. In this work, we analyze RACH success probability in a self-powered NB-IoT network taking into account the repeated preamble transmissions and collisions, where each IoT device with data is active when its battery energy is sufficient to support the transmission. We model the temporal dynamics of the energy level as a birth-death process, derive the energy availability of each IoT device, and examine its dependence on the energy storage capacity and the repetition value. We show that in certain scenarios, the energy availability remains unchanged despite randomness in the energy harvesting. We also derive the exact expression for the RACH success probability of a {randomly chosen} IoT device under the derived energy availability, which is validated under different repetition values via simulations. We show that the repetition scheme can efficiently improve the RACH success probability in a light traffic scenario, but only slightly improves that performance with very inefficient channel resource utilization in a heavy traffic scenario.

There is an increase in usage of smaller cells or femtocells to improve performance and coverage of next-generation heterogeneous wireless networks (HetNets). However, the interference caused by femtocells to neighboring cells is a limiting performance factor in dense HetNets. This interference is being managed via distributed resource allocation methods. However, as the density of the network increases so does the complexity of such resource allocation methods. Yet, unplanned deployment of femtocells requires an adaptable and self-organizing algorithm to make HetNets viable. As such, we propose to use a machine learning approach based on Q-learning to solve the resource allocation problem in such complex networks. By defining each base station as an agent, a cellular network is modelled as a multi-agent network. Subsequently, cooperative Q-learning can be applied as an efficient approach to manage the resources of a multi-agent network. Furthermore, the proposed approach considers the quality of service (QoS) for each user and fairness in the network. In comparison with prior work, the proposed approach can bring more than a four-fold increase in the number of supported femtocells while using cooperative Q-learning to reduce resource allocation overhead.

In this paper, an incremental selective decode-and-forward (ISDF) relay strategy is proposed for power line communication (PLC) systems to improve the spectral efficiency. Traditional decode-and-forward (DF) relaying employs two time slots by using half-duplex relays which significantly reduces the spectral efficiency. The ISDF strategy utilizes the relay only if the direct link quality fails to attain a certain information rate, thereby improving the spectral efficiency. The path gain is assumed to be log-normally distributed with very high distance dependent signal attenuation. Furthermore, the additive noise is modeled as a Bernoulli-Gaussian process to incorporate the effects of impulsive noise contents. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability and the fraction of times the relay is in use, and an approximate closed-form expression for the average bit error rate (BER) are derived for the binary phase-shift keying signaling scheme. We observe that the fraction of times the relay is in use can be significantly reduced compared to the traditional DF strategy. It is also observed that at high transmit power, the spectral efficiency increases while the average BER decreases with increase in the required rate.

This paper develops a tractable framework for exploiting the potential benefits of physical layer security in three-tier wireless sensor networks using stochastic geometry. In such networks, the sensing data from the remote sensors are collected by sinks with the help of access points, and the external eavesdroppers intercept the data transmissions. We focus on the secure transmission in two scenarios: i) the active sensors transmit their sensing data to the access points, and ii) the active access points forward the data to the sinks. We derive new compact expressions for the average secrecy rate in these two scenarios. We also derive a new compact expression for the overall average secrecy rate. Numerical results corroborate our analysis and show that multiple antennas at the access points can enhance the security of three-tier wireless sensor networks. Our results show that increasing the number of access points decreases the average secrecy rate between the access point and its associated sink. However, we find that increasing the number of access points first increases the overall average secrecy rate, with a critical value beyond which the overall average secrecy rate then decreases. When increasing the number of active sensors, both the average secrecy rate between the sensor and its associated access point and the overall average secrecy rate decrease. In contrast, increasing the number of sinks improves both the average secrecy rate between the access point and its associated sink, as well as the overall average secrecy rate.

Energy harvesting (EH) nodes can play an important role in cooperative communication systems which do not have a continuous power supply. In this paper, we consider the optimization of conventional and buffer-aided link adaptive EH relaying systems, where an EH source communicates with the destination via an EH decode-and-forward relay. In conventional relaying, source and relay transmit signals in consecutive time slots whereas in buffer-aided link adaptive relaying, the state of the source-relay and relay-destination channels determines whether the source or the relay is selected for transmission. Our objective is to maximize the system throughput over a finite number of transmission time slots for both relaying protocols. In case of conventional relaying, we propose an offline and several online joint source and relay transmit power allocation schemes. For offline power allocation, we formulate an optimization problem which can be solved optimally. For the online case, we propose a dynamic programming (DP) approach to compute the optimal online transmit power. To alleviate the complexity inherent to DP, we also propose several suboptimal online power allocation schemes. For buffer-aided link adaptive relaying, we show that the joint offline optimization of the source and relay transmit powers along with the link selection results in a mixed integer non-linear program which we solve optimally using the spatial branch-and-bound method. We also propose an efficient online power allocation scheme and a naive online power allocation scheme for buffer-aided link adaptive relaying. Our results show that link adaptive relaying provides performance improvement over conventional relaying at the expense of a higher computational complexity.

Recognising the difficulties in systematic understanding of the physical characteristics of strongly correlated f-electron systems, we considered it worthwhile to subject the so-called "normal" f-electron systems like those of Gd to careful investigations. We find that the spin-disorder contribution to electrical resistivity ($ρ$) in the paramagnetic state, instead of remaining contant, surprisingly increases with decreasing temperature (T) in the paramagnetic state in some of the Gd alloys. In some cases, this "excess resistance" is so large that a distinct minimum in the plot of $ρ$ versus T can be seen, mimicking the behaviour of Kondo lattices. This excess resistance can be suppressed by the application of a magnetic field, naturally resulting in large magnetoresistance. In addition, these alloys are found to exhibit heavy-fermion-like heat-capacity behavior. These unusual findings imply hither-to-unexplored electron correlation effects even in Gd-based alloys.

A closer look at the temperature (T) dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) of two polycrystalline magnetic compounds, LaMn$_2$Ge$_2$ and SmMn$_2$Ge$_2$, previously reported by us, is made. A common feature for both these compounds is that the low temperature MR is positive (say, below, 30 K) in spite of the fact that both are ferromagnetic at such low temperatures; in addition, MR as a function of magnetic field (H) does not track magnetization (M) in the sense that M saturates at low fields, while MR varies linearly with H. These observations suggest that the magnetic layers interestingly do not dominate low temperature magnetotransport process. Interestingly enough, as the T is increased, say around 100 K, these magnetic layers dominate MR process as evidenced by the tracking of M and MR in SmMn$_2$Ge$_2$. These results tempts us to propose that there is an unusual "electronic separation" for MR process as the T is lowered in this class of compounds.

Results of low temperature magnetoresistance ($Δρ/ρ$) and isothermal magnetization (M) measurements on polycrystalline ferromagnetic (T_C close to 300 K) natural multilayers, LaMn_{2+x}Ge_{2-y}Si_y, are reported. It is found that the samples with large residual resistivity ratio, $ρ(300K)/ρ(4.2K)$, exhibit large positive magnetoresistance at high magnetic fields. The Kohler's rule is not obeyed in these alloys. In addition, at 4.5 K, there is a tendency towards linear variation of $Δρ/ρ$ with magnetic field with increasing $ρ(300K)/ρ(4.2K$); however, the field dependence of $Δρ/ρ$ does not track that of M, thereby suggesting that the magnetoresistance originates from non-magnetic layers. It is interesting that these experimental findings on bulk polycrystals are qualitatively similar to what is seen in artificially grown multilayer systems recently.

Abstract:
The results of heat-capacity, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance $(Δρ/ρ)$ measurements on the compounds Tb$_2$PdSi$_3$ and Dy$_2$PdSi$_3$, are reported. The results establish that these compounds undergo long-range magnetic ordering (presumably with a complex magnetic structure) below (Tc=) 23 and 8 K respectively. The $Δρ/ρ$ is negative in the vicinity of Tc a…

The $Δρ/ρ$ is negative in the vicinity of Tc and the magnitude grows as Tc is approached from higher temperature as in the case of well-known giant magnetoresistance systems (La manganite based perovskites); this is attributed to the formation of some kind of magnetic polarons. The magnitude of magnetoresistance at low temperatures is quite large, for instance, about 30% in the presence of 60 kOe field at 5 K in the Dy sample.

Results on electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, magnetic Results on electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and Gd Mossbauer measurements on a Gd-based intermetallic compound, Gd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ are reported. A finding of interest is that the resistivity unexpectedly shows a well-defined minimum at about 45 K, well above the long range magnetic ordering temperature (21 K), a feature which gets suppressed by the application of a magnetic field. This observation in a Gd alloy presents an interesting scenario. On the basis of our results, we propose electron localization induced by s-f (or d-f) exchange interaction prior to long range magnetic order as a mechanism for the electrical resistance minimum.

We present results of electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance and ac and dc magnetic susceptibility on polycrystalline samples of the type La(0.5)Ca(0.5-x)Ba(x)MnO(3) synthesized under identical heat treatment conditions. The substitution of larger Ba ions for Ca results in a non- monotonic variation of the curie temperature as the system evolves from a charge ordered insulating state for x=0 to a ferromagnetic metallic state for x=0.5. An intermediate compositino, x=0.1, interestingly exhibits ferromagnetic. insulating behaviour with thermal hysteresis in ac chi around the curie tem- perature (120K). The x=0.2 and 0.3 compounds exhibit semiconducting like behavior as the temperature is lowered below 300K, with a broad peak in rho around 80-100K: These compositions exhibit a weak increase in rho as the temperature lowered below 30K, indicative of electron localization effects. These compositions also undergo ferromagnetic transitions below about 200 and 235K respectively, though these are non-hysteretic; above all, for these compositions, MR is large and conveniently measurable over the entire tempera- ture range of measurement below Tc. This experimental finding may be of interest from the application point of view. We infer that the A-site ionic-size mismatch plays a crucial role in the deciding these properties.
