Experimental and theoretical studies of the dynamic magnetization in swept magnetic fields of the orthorhombic SrY$_2$O$_4$ single-crystals doped with the Dy$^{3+}$ Kramers ions (0.01 and 0.5 at.%) with natural abundances of even and odd Dy isotopes are presented. Impurity ions substitute for Y$^{3+}$ ions at two nonequivalent crystallographic sites with the same local $C_s$ symmetry but strongly different crystal fields. Well pronounced double-loop hysteresis is observed at temperatures 2, 4, 5 and 6 K for swee** rates of 5 and 1 mT/s. The microscopic model of spectral, magnetic and kinetic properties of Dy$^{3+}$ ions is developed based on the results of EPR, site selective optical spectra and magnetic relaxation measurements. The derived approach to the dynamic magnetization in the swee** field based on the numerical solution of generalized master equations with time-dependent transition probabilities induced by the electron-phonon interaction, quantum tunneling and cross-relaxation allowed us to reproduce successfully the evolution of the hysteresis loop shape with temperature, swee** rate and concentration of paramagnetic ions.

We present the low-temperature magnetic structures of SrGd$_2$O$_4$ combining neutron diffraction methods on polycrystalline and single-crystal samples containing the $^{160}$Gd isotope. In contrast to other members of the Sr$Ln_2$O$_4$ family ($Ln$ = lanthanide) this system reveals two long-range ordered magnetic phases, which our diffraction data unambiguously identify. Below $T_{\rm N1}$ = 2.73~K, a $\mathbf{q}_1$ = (0 0 0) magnetic structure is stabilized where ferromagnetic chains along the $c$~axis (space group $Pnam$) are coupled antiferromagnetically with neighboring chains. On cooling below $T_{\rm N2}$ = 0.48~K, an additional incommensurate component modulated by $\mathbf{q}_2$ = (0~0~0.42) evolves and aligned along either of the perpendicular axes for the two different Gd sites, resulting in a fan-like magnetic structure. The identification of the particular Gd sites with the magnetic order observed with neutron diffraction is facilitated by a detailed analysis of the crystal fields acting on the sites. The observed ordering phenomena underline the complex multiaxial anisotropy in this system.

The spin-noise spectroscopy (SNS) method implies high efficiency of conversion of the spin-system magnetization to the Faraday rotation angle. Generally, this efficiency cannot be estimated using the characteristics of the regular magneto-optical activity of a paramagnet. However, it may be drastically enhanced in systems with strong inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transitions. This enhancement leads to the giant spin-noise gain effect and previously allowed one to apply the SNS to rare-earth-activated crystals. We show that the nonlinear resonant Faraday effect can be used to measure the homogeneous width of the inhomogeneously broadened transition and, thus, to estimate the applicability of the SNS to this type of paramagnet. We present the theoretical description of the effect and perform measurements on intraconfigurational ($4f$-$4f$) transitions of the trivalent rare-earth ions of neodymium and ytterbium in fluorite-based crystals. The proposed experimental approach establishes new links between the effects of nonlinear optics and spin-noise characteristics of crystals with paramagnetic impurities and offers new ways of research in the physics of impurity crystals.

The strongly correlated system Ho11B12 with boron sublattice Jahn-Teller instability and nanoscale electronic phase separation (dynamic charge stripes) was studied in detail by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), magnetometry and heat capacity measurements at temperatures in the range 3-300 K. From the analysis of registered INS spectra, we determined parameters of the cubic crystal field at holmium sites, B4=- 0.333 meV and B6= -2.003 meV (in Stevens notations), with an unconventional large ratio B6/B4 pointing on the dominant role of conduction electrons in the formation of a crystal field potential. The molecular field in the antiferromagnetic state, Bloc = (1.75+- 0.1) T has been directly determined from the INS spectra together with short-range order effects detected in the paramagnetic state. A comparison of measured magnetization in diluted Lu0.99Ho0.01B12 and concentrated HoB12 single crystals showed a strong suppression of Ho magnetic moments by antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in holmium dodecaboride. To account explicitly for the short-range antiferromagnetic correlations, a self-consistent holmium dimer model was developed that allowed us to reproduce successfully field and temperature variations of the magnetization and heat capacity in the cage-glass phase of HoB12 in external magnetic fields.

ESR spectra exhibit signals from rare-earth ions that substitute for yttrium ions in sites with local trigonal symmetry. The $g$ tensor components are determined. The results of optical investigations indicate that impurity centers of several types are formed; the sublevel energies of the ground and excited multiplets of these centers are found. Among the great variety of detected optical centers, the centers that dominate in the formation of ESR spectra are discriminated. An analysis of the experimental data using the exchange-charge model have made it possible to determine the sets of parameters of the crystal field for Er$^{3+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions substituting Y$^{3+}$ ions in regular crystallographic sites in pyrochlore Y$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$.

In this work, the CF parameters for the Dy$^{3+}$ ions in the $P3_121$ ($P3_221$) phase of DyFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are obtained from CF calculations based on the analysis of high-resolution temperature-dependent optical spectroscopy data. The corresponding Rabi dam** curves and the spin coherence times are detected at varying strengths of the microwave field. These data are well reproduced by a theoretical model which accounts for the intrinsic inhomogeneity of the microwave field within the microwave resonator and the magnetic dipole interactions in the diluted spin ensemble. The results indicate that the studied 8-level ground manifold of Gd$^{3+}$ ion can represent an effective three qubit quantum system.

In the present work, the effects of crystal fields (CF) in this compound containing four magnetically inequivalent erbium sublattices are investigated experimentally and theoretically. We combine the measurements of the CF levels of the Er3+ ions made on a powder sample of SrEr2O4 using neutron spectroscopy with site-selective optical and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements performed on single crystal samples of the lightly Er-doped nonmagnetic analogue, SrY2O4. Two sets of CF parameters corresponding to the Er3+ ions at the crystallographically inequivalent lattice sites are derived which fit all the available experimental data well, including the magnetization and dc susceptibility data for both lightly doped and concentrated samples.

Powder x-ray diffraction analysis confirms that Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ adopts the pyrochlore structure. Room-temperature x-ray diffraction and time-of-flight neutron scattering experiments show that the crystals are stoichiometric in composition with no measurable site disorder. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility shows no magnetic ordering at temperatures down to 0.5 K. Fits to the magnetic susceptibility data using a Curie-Weiss law reveal a ferromagnetic coupling between the Nd moments. Magnetization versus field measurements show a local Ising anisotropy along the <111> axes of the Nd$^{3+}$ ions in the ground state. Specific heat versus temperature measurements in zero applied magnetic field indicate the presence of a thermal anomaly below $T\sim7$ K, but no evidence of magnetic ordering is observed down to 0.5 K. The experimental temperature dependence of the single-crystal bulk dc susceptibility and isothermal magnetization are analyzed using crystal field theory and the crystal field parameters and exchange coupling constants determined.

We study coherent dynamics in a system of dipolar coupled spin qubits diluted in solid and subjected to a driving microwave field. In the case of rare earth ions, anisotropic crystal background results in anisotropic g tensor and thus modifies the dipolar coupling. We develop a microscopic theory of spin relaxation in transient regime for the frequently encountered case of axially symmetric crystal field. The calculated decoherence rate is nonlinear in Rabi frequency. We show that the direction of static magnetic field that corresponds to the highest spin g-factor is preferable in order to obtain higher number of coherent qubit operations. The results of calculations are in excellent agreement with our experimental data on Rabi oscillations recorded for a series of CaWO4 crystals with different concentrations of Nd3+ ions.

The fits of numerical simulations to the susceptibility data for the x = 0.0017, 0.0085 and 0.0408 show that Ho-Ho cross-relaxation processes become more important at higher concentrations, signaling the crossover from single-ion to correlated behavior. We simulate the muon spin depolarization using the parameters extracted from the susceptibility, and the simulations agree well with our data for samples with x = 0.0017 and 0.0085. The μSR data for samples with x = 0.0408 and 0.0855 at low temperatures (T < 10 K) cannot be described within a single-ion picture of magnetic field fluctuations and give evidence for additional mechanisms of depolarization due to Ho$^{3+}$ correlations. We also observe an unusual peak in the magnetic field dependence of the muon relaxation rate in the temperature interval 10 - 20 K that we ascribe to a modification of the Ho$^{3+}$ fluctuation rate due to a field induced shift of the energy gap between the ground and the first excited doublet crystal field states relative to a peak in the phonon density of states centered near 63 cm$^{-1}$.

We present zero-field μSR measurements for LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_{x}$F$_{4}$ samples with x = 0.0017, 0.0085, 0.0406, and 0.0855. We characterize the dynamics associated with the formation of the (F-μ-F)$^{-1}$ complex by comparing our data to Monte Carlo simulations to determine the concentration range over which the spin dynamics are determined primarily by the Ho$^{3+}$-μ interaction rather than the F-μ interaction. Simulations show that F-μ-F oscillations should evolve into a Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe decay for an increasing static magnetic field distribution Γ (i.e., increasing x), but the data do not show this behavior, consistent with the recently reported existence of strong magnetic fluctuations in this system at low temperatures. Anisotropy in the field distribution is shown to cause small errors of order 10% from behavior predicted for an isotropic distribution. Finally, numerical calculations show that values of Γ calculated in the single ion limit greatly exceed the values extracted from curve fits, suggesting that strong correlations play an important role in this system.

Rabi oscillations in the V_15 Single Molecule Magnet (SMM) embedded in the surfactant DODA have been studied at different microwave powers. An intense dam** peak is observed when the Rabi frequency Omega_R falls in the vicinity of the Larmor frequency of protons w_N, while the dam** time t_R of oscillations reaches values 10 times shorter than the phase coherence time t_2 measured at the same temperature. The experiments are interpreted by the N-spin model showing that t_R is directly associated with the decoherence via electronic/nuclear spin cross-relaxation in the rotating reference frame. It is shown that this decoherence is accompanied with energy dissipation in the range of the Rabi frequencies w_N - sigma_e < Omega_R < w_N, where sigma_e is the mean super-hyperfine field (in frequency units) induced by protons at SMMs. Weaker dam** without dissipation takes place outside this dissipation window. Simple local field estimations suggest that this rapid cross-relaxation in resonant microwave field observed for the first time in SMMV_15 should take place in other SMMs like Fe_8 and Mn_12 containing protons, too.

Contrary to the well known spin qubits, rare-earth qubits are characterized by a strong influence of crystal field due to large spin-orbit coupling. At low temperature and in the presence of resonance microwaves, it is the magnetic moment of the crystal-field ground-state which nutates (for several $μ$s) and the Rabi frequency $Ω_R$ is anisotropic. Here, we present a study of the variations of $Ω_R(\vec{H}_{0})$ with the magnitude and direction of the static magnetic field $\vec{H_{0}}$ for the odd $^{167}$Er isotope in a single crystal CaWO$_4$:Er$^{3+}$. The hyperfine interactions split the $Ω_R(\vec{H}_{0})$ curve into eight different curves which are fitted numerically and described analytically. These "spin-orbit qubits" should allow detailed studies of decoherence mechanisms which become relevant at high temperature and open new ways for qubit addressing using properly oriented magnetic fields.

Frequency and dc magnetic field dependences of dynamic susceptibility in diluted paramagnets LiYF$_4$:Ho$^{3+}$ have been measured at liquid helium temperatures in the ac and dc magnetic fields parallel to the symmetry axis of a tetragonal crystal lattice. Experimental data are analyzed in the framework of microscopic theory of relaxation rates in the manifold of 24 electron-nuclear sublevels of the lowest non-Kramers doublet and the first excited singlet in the Ho$^{3+}$ ground multiplet $^5I_8$ split by the crystal field of S$_4$ symmetry. The one-phonon transition probabilities were computed using electron-phonon coupling constants calculated in the framework of exchange charge model and were checked by optical piezospectroscopic measurements. The specific features observed in field dependences of the in- and out-of-phase susceptibilities (humps and dips, respectively) at the crossings (anti-crossings) of the electron-nuclear sublevels are well reproduced by simulations when the phonon bottleneck effect and the cross-spin relaxation are taken into account.

Temperature and magnetic field dependences of the 19F nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in a single crystal of LiYF4 doped with holmium are described by an approach based on a detailed consideration of the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions between nuclei and impurity paramagnetic ions and nuclear spin diffusion processes. The observed non-exponential long time recovery of the nuclear magnetization after saturation at intermediate temperatures is in agreement with predictions of the spin-diffusion theory in a case of the diffusion limited relaxation. At avoided level crossings in the spectrum of electron-nuclear states of the Ho3+ ion, rates of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation increase due to quasi-resonant energy exchange between nuclei and paramagnetic ions, in contrast to the predominant role played by electronic cross-relaxation processes in the low-frequency ac-susceptibility.

We report high-resolution optical absorption spectra for NdFe3(BO3)4 trigonal single crystal which is known to exhibit a giant magnetoelectric effect below the temperature of magnetic ordering TN = 33 K. The analysis of the temperature-dependent polarized spectra reveals the energies and, in some cases, symmetries and exchange splittings of Nd3+ 84 Kramers doublets. We perform crystal-field calculations starting from the exchange-charge model, obtain a set of six real crystal-field parameters, and calculate wave functions and magnetic g-factors. In particular, the values g(perpendicular) = 2.385, g(parallel) = 1.376 were found for the Nd3+ ground-state doublet. We obtain Bloc=7.88 T and |JFN|= 0.48 K for the values of the local effective magnetic field at liquid helium temperatures at the Nd3+ site and the Nd - Fe exchange integral, respectively, using the experimentally measured Nd3+ ground-state splitting of 8.8 cm-1. To check reliability of our set of crystal field parameters we model the magnetic susceptibility data from literature. A dimer containing two nearest-neighbor iron ions in the spiral chain is considered to partly account for quasi-one-dimensional properties of iron borates, and then the mean-field approximation is used. The results of calculations with the exchange parameters for Fe3+ ions Jnn = -6.25 K (intra-chain interactions) and Jnnn = -1.92 K (inter-chain interactions) obtained from fitting agree well with the experimental data.

NMR spectra of 73 Ge (nuclear spin I = 9/2) in germanium single crystals with different isotopic compositions have been measured at the frequency of 17.4 MHz at room temperature. Due to the small concentration (~0.1%) of the magnetic (73 Ge) isotope, the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction is negligible in the samples studied, and the observed specific features of the resonance lineshapes (a narrow central peak and a wide plateau) are determined mainly by the quadrupole interaction of magnetic nuclei with the random electric field gradient (EFG) induced by the isotopic disorder. The second and fourth moments of the distribution function of the EFG are calculated taking into account local lattice deformations due to mass defects in the close neighborhood of the magnetic nuclei, as well as charge density redistributions and lattice strains induced by distant impurity isotopes. The simulated lineshapes, represented by a superposition of Gaussians corresponding to individual transitions between nuclear Zeeman sublevels, agree reasonably well with the measured spectra.

We report high resolution polarized infrared studies of the quarter-filled spin ladder compound alpha'-NaV_2O_5 as a function of temperature (5K <= T <= 300K). Numerous new modes were detected below the temperature T_c=34K of the phase transition into a charge ordered nonmagnetic state accompanied by a lattice dimerization. We analyse the Brillouin zone (BZ) folding due to lattice dimerization at T_c and show that some peculiarities of the low-temperature vibrational spectrum come from quadruplets folded from the BZ point (1/2, 1/2, 1/4). We discuss an earlier interpretation of the 70, 107, and 133cm-1 modes as magnetic bound states and propose the alternative interpretation as folded phonon modes strongly interacting with charge and spin excitations.

High resolution low-temperature absorption spectra of 0.2% Pr^3+ doped CsCdBr_3 were measured in the spectral region 2000--7000 cm-1. Positions and widths of the crystal field levels within the 3H5, 3H4, 3F2, and 3F3 multiplets of the Pr^3+ main center have been determined. Hyperfine structure of several spectral lines has been found. Crystal field calculations were carried out in the framework of the semiphenomenological exchange charge model (ECM). Parameters of the ECM were determined by fitting to the measured total splittings of the 3H4 and 3H6 multiplets and to the observed in this work hyperfine splittings of the crystal field levels. One- and two-phonon relaxation rates were calculated using the phonon Green's functions of the perfect (CsCdBr_3) and locally perturbed (impurity dimer centers in CsCdBr_3:Pr^3+) crystal lattice. Comparison with the measured linewidths confirmed an essential redistribution of the phonon density of states in CsCdBr_3 crystals doped with rare-earth ions.

We have measured far infrared reflectance and transmittance spectra as well as Raman scattering spectra of α'-NaV2O5 single crystals for all the principal polarizations. The temperature range above the phase transition temperature T_c=35 K was investigated, mainly. On the basis of this experimental study and of the lattice dynamics calculations we conclude that the symmetry of NaV2O5 in the high temperature phase is described by the centrosymmetric D_{2h}^{13} space group. The assignment of the observed phonons is given. Values of dielectric constants are obtained from the infrared data. Asymmetric shapes of several infrared lines as well as higher order infrared vibrational spectra are discussed. The crystal field energy levels of the 3d electron localized at the V^{4+} site have been calculated in the framework of the exchange charge model using the values of effective charges obtained from the lattice dynamics calculations. According to the results of these calculations, the earlier observed broad optical bands in the region of 1 eV can be interpreted as phonon assisted d-d transitions.
